I was very excited to finally try this Austin staple, but it just didn't live up to the hype. The food was good, but nothing life changing. We tried a chicken salad. The banana pudding pie and molasses cookie were good. The honey lavender latte was very disappointing. There was no sweetness to it. It was extremely bitter. I double checked with the person who called my name to be sure that was my drink and they insisted it was. I'm still not sold. Super cute and tasty spot for brunch! They're often busy, so expect a wait if you're there on the weekend. They do allow no wait for bar seating, which is a plus. The place is clean and simple in decor. Service wasn't great, which is the only reason for 4 stars. I ordered the lox plate with a matcha iced drink and both were delicious. The lox plate was served on a small wooden cutting board which was really cute and just matched the overall aesthetic this place is going for. With enough tattoo'ed baristas to fill out an episode of gangland circa 2007, Swedish Hill is a hipster cafe heavy on the vibe, brutal on the price. The bacon egg and cheese breakfast taco with the verde sauce is flavorful from beginning to end, but for $7 the taco, you might be better off getting the ingredients yourself. There seems to be a phenomenon with city coffee shops of having a deep adoration for sour coffee. The cold brew is nigh on un-finish-able. I haven't experienced a banana cream pie like since my grandmother's in the 90's. Real banana flavor, wonderfully smooth, and a great crust. Bring your wallet! Enjoy the pastries. read more

Great service, ok food, super cute place, but also super pricy! I paid $56 dollars for lunch with my mom. We both got a sandwich (tuna melt and the Cubano) and two small sides. The portions were pretty large so you might want to split. She also got a raspberry butter bar which I can only describe as weird (texture, consistency, flavor, everything) and a pistachio macron (which was good). I have spent tens of thousands at the very least at MML, including Swedish Hill and their full service restaurants in Austin. I have hosted guests at MML restaurants for expensive dinners and brunches. Through all that, I've dealt with select staff's dismissive and rude attitude. I still tip as if they provided good service, and only sometimes they do. Some of my friends refuse to go to MML restaurants due to these issues so I am not alone unfortunately. I've personally been food poisoned once at Josephine house (the burger was undercooked), but I let it go thinking it was one off (it wasn't, I've now independently heard others have similar issues). I have taken my toddler to the bakery for breakfast or afternoon snacks sometimes, as we own a house nearby, and the baristas are usually very friendly. They hired a top notch manager from LPQ as well who stops in sometimes. With all that said, after two additional recent encounters with one male (manager? Lighter hair hadn't seen him much before) , and another female with very light mid length curly hair who is sometimes behind the counter at Swedish Hill ), I feel that I have to post this. The attitude towards me, especially when I have my adorable daughter with me, who is well behaved and typically wears dresses and bows ...almost never gets negative reactions, is abominable. I have lived all over the world, and have received better service in New York and other places (that are very much not known for good service). I thought I caught these individuals on a bad day, but unfortunately the issue has been very consistent. I took my elderly father here and we still endured this terrible attitude, in fact it was worse! I am going to take a long break from the MML group, and may decide not to come back. I rarely write reviews. But this is too much. Too consistently rude to my family. read more

AMAZING place! Visited for the 1st time today and so impressed. Great assortment of baked goods: cakes, scones, cinnamon roles, croissants, macaroons, eclairs, etc. deli items like chicken salad, dips, breakfast, espresso. Just loved the offerings here. Apparently they also have themed happy hours and a rotating menu. Appear to be taking good precautions during COVID, and there's a nice patio with wifi. I picked up a quick order to go and service was wonderful and efficient. The lady at the counter, Kim, really took the time to show me around and made sure to get my order right. Shoutout to Kim! I started eating at Swedish Hill twenty years ago. I've ordered dozens of cakes from them. They have gone down hill dramatically from the 90's and aughts. They stopped carrying their delicious strawberry cake and now half their cakes are covered in sprinkles in case you are five years old. I placed an Easter order in advance for a small carrot cake and a dozen kouign amann pastries. I planned to serve them for an Easter brunch I am hosting. We just went to pick them up and they couldn't find my order. I had to show them my confirmation multiple times. They were able to pull a carrot cake for me, but didn't have any kouign amann left. They said they would refund me for them and they did. Then they said they sell out of those early in the day. That is why I placed an order in advance! And my order just must have been overlooked. Yep, I got that. They did refund the cost of the pastries only. Not the ordering fee. They did give me some cookies from their case of what was left. I have nothing to serve in their place at brunch and it was the final straw in a list of disappointments from Swedish Hill. I do not recommend trusting them with anything that is of importance to you. read more

The food tastes good, most things taste so fresh and truly you can taste the good quality. The pastries are good I've had a few. Their cold case of "grocery" stuff is my weakness. Zero complaints on that aspect. My issue with Swedish comes down to two things, 1. The price. For that price don't skimp me on my $8 pasta salad side. I feel so angry when I see my bowl isn't even full and here I am dreaming about this pesto salad for weeks. 2. The employees. Could you guys be a little less obvious on the obnoxious looking me up and down? Poor customer service, obvious judgment and just makes me feel uncomfortable. The crowd here will make you feel unwelcome if you're not one of them. (As with all MML restaurants). Let's just say if you're a minority, you will be made feel so by staff and customers alike. All in all they're like the cool kid that yeah okay they are cool, but the fact that they constantly have to remind you makes them uncool. Will I be back? Stand there with an infant in your arms, order a coffee, and get told that it will be ready in a few minutes... Ask a few minutes later and they look at you like an idiot as they inform you that the coffee is ready and has been placed *on the other side of the restaurant* - perhaps they consider this to be part of the fun? Like a game, trying to figure out the policies and procedures at this place will keep you on your toes and give you something to chat about with your spouse. Want to sit down? Good luck figuring out which of the 3 stations you are supposed to stand in line for to get a seat. Want the dessert you ordered? Get ready for a flippant college person to complain about how busy they are while you've waited in line twice. Is it a sit down restaurant? Kinda. Is it a cafe? Kinda. Is it a to-go place? Kinda... Sweedish Hill has an identity crisis that probably contributes to the sour attitude of the team working there. Walking in, the place is GORGEOUS, The walls are lined with shelves of ready made products from import goods to refrigerators selling gelato. They also had gifts on sale like pocket knives. There's 2 counters but the gist of it, is that you grab a number and then wait for them to call it so you can order your food. To the left is a huge display of bakery items, and the right is food items that are served cold, like carrot dishes and smoked meats. There's also gelato, a rotisserie chicken oven. And a solo counter selling coffee. The food we ordered: avocado toast (11-12), roast beef sandwich (14) , roast pork sandwich (14) , 2 croissants Togo, chocolate cake, eclair, small side of carrots, and a cinnamon roll, total came out to 80 dollars. Thoughts? The avocado toast was near inedible, with canned oily tuna, tomato's, avocado, and more olive oil on top of sour dough bread. The breading for the sandwiches were chewy, hoagie style, not a fan. And the filling of the steak hoagie was greasy and dripping with fat. The roasted pork was good but alittle bland, it was a copy cat dish of a famous sandwich in Philadelphia with broccoli rabe and cheese. Pastries were sad and tiny, cake had no flavor, eclair was tiny and unremarkable, and cinnamon roll was awful, tasted over cooked and dry. I gave my croissants to my parents and they weren't impressed. Roasted Carrots were overpriced, I think they were 6 dollars? For a tiny bowl, they're served icy cold and they tastes like tea from the matcha seasoning on them. Overall food was unsatisfactory and we left a lot of food on our plates. Disappointed and sad to see an austin gem converted to a overpriced bakery/restaurant. Swedish hill is confused and time will tell if it survives, oh wait, it's owned by one of the richest groups in town, it'll probably survive. My family grew up eating and obsessing over sweetish hill, the cozy vibes and pastries that sold out by the afternoons had us swooning. Their ham and cheese croissant and schneckens were to DIE for. We live up north and would drive the extra 30 min to go there, when we heard they were getting a make over, we were concerned but hopeful. We splurged for a celebration and spent around $40 on a mini cake for two people and it tasted like cardboard with too much butter slathered on top. We threw the whole thing out. For every one good macaroon they make, three are so chewy and crumbly you'd think you were eating a deep fried hi-chew. I am surprised this place doesn't have more stars! We had a wonderful experience. What a wonderful little market in one building! Coffee, wine, food and pastries all under one roof. Food: Ordered the bagel and lox plate, a cinnamon roll, ham & cheese croissant and babka. I got the bagel and lox plate with an everything bagel. The portion of lox was perfectly acceptable to me. It was quite salty, so more would have been overpowering. It was nicely balanced with the capers, the creaminess of the cream cheese and the freshness of the cucumber, green tomato and sprouts. The pastries were also very good and the babka was delicious! (I bought an entire loaf to take home.) Ordering: The ordering system was a little confusing. I can see why people don't like it. I don't think taking a number was the confusing part though. There are different spots to order. There's a register over in the bakery where you can order pastries and drinks. If you want to order a meal, you need to take a number and order at the register that's in line with the front door. There was no line and no one at that register when I was ready to order, so I was a little confused as to where to go. Seating: There was plenty of seating over by the bar and tables around the bar. Plus a bunch of outdoor seating. Parking: There are parking spots that line the street in front of the restaurant. It's on 6th, so you'll have to back in at an angle for street parking. Price: I'd say it was kind of pricey, but this is downtown Austin and it was completely in line with what I expected. I thought the pricing was appropriate based on the location. Service: All of the staff was friendly. Someone even saw that we had a baby with us and nicely offered to go get our chai from the bar so we didn't have to get up. Staff also kept coming by to clear our dirty dishes. Time of day: We went at 10 am on a Sunday. There was plenty of parking available.
