We are fortunate to have Sweet Crimes not far from our home which is east of the river. One member of our household cannot eat gluten. It is amazing to know every single item is safe to eat. These are a few of our favorites: - chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting - mini quiche - donuts (personally, I do not even like donuts and love these cake-style donuts) - chocolate babka - for holidays we have ordered the star bread -- YUM! The staff are always very nice. The online ordering system can be a tad complicated and it is always good to check your order before you leave. They get very hectic around holidays. We are grateful to have this delicious and lovely business nearby. * If you are visiting from out of town and need a gluten free / celiac safe spot for breakfast or lunch, Sweet Crimes is ideal. Sweet Crimes is delicious and is my go-to place for GF baked goods and fresh bread. I seriously love the loaves of bread. There's rotating flavors as well, but I have to say that the sundried tomato and the olive have been my favorite (and I don't even like olives). I do wish that they could slice them, but I understand why they don't. I also adore their cinnamon rolls and brownies. I've actually never had anything here that I didn't like, though I ordered a frosted banana bread once, and it tasted like a dense gingerbread. Capitol Hill's first gluten-free bakery is here! Located on Pennsylvania Ave SE on the same block as the late Representative John Lewis' barber, Sweet Crimes is a small bakery with mighty products. Here's why you should visit: 1) Food: If you're not gluten intolerant, you may look down on gluten-free products, but don't with Sweet Crimes. They are among the best baked goods in the city and happen to be gluten-free. On opening day (November 22, 2021), I stopped in for an egg and cheese biscuit (I paid an extra $1 for ham), chocolate chip scone and a chocolate glazed donut. Each was flavorful and moist, especially the scone. I'm not a big fan of dry scones and this one had the perfect texture. So tasty! 2) Drinks: They have an impressive coffee list, including a s'more cocoa made with marshmallows, honey and graham crackers. My latte was well brewed and smooth. They also sell a variety of tea. 3) Space: It's small, but cozy. It's in a blue brick building with a mural painted inside. The window space has two small tables and a long bench filled with pillows. Behind the glass are their pastries and gluten-free cake mixes line the wall by the register. 4) Service: When I stopped by, two women were behind the counter. Both were genuinely friendly and proud of their work at the bakery. One told me she grew up just blocks from the bakery. 5) Story: This bakery is woman-owned. Keri is from Maryland and traveled the world with her family and in her career in international development. When she moved back to the area, she started baking gluten-free products and even picked up a few awards along the way. They had a great soft opening! The entire time I was there, there was a line outside! The people want the pastries! Even with a high demand, everyone was nice. Customers were understanding. By time I arrived they were running out of most of the items so clearly everyone was looking forward to the opening. I got the pumpkin bread and hot cider for myself and it was amazing. The bread was moist, not too sweet. The portions are generous. The cider was good as well. Delicious and adorable gluten free cafe! I hoofed it the .9 mi from the navy yard since I'm GF and didn't realize there was a 100% gluten free lunch spot nearby. I thought I bought extra for the weekend but I ended up eating everything all at once (sandwich, cupcake, 2 cookies and a doughnut lol) and didn't even feel sick or yucky like I would sometimes from some gluten free baked goods. Looking for a 100% bakery gluten free bakery? Sweet Crimes was recommended to me by the host of the airbnb I was staying at. I let her know I was Gluten intolerant and looking for places in the area. The bakery was easy to find and opens at 8am. The case was fully stocked and it took me a good 10 minutes to figure out what I wanted. I ordered an egg & cheese biscuit with Chipotle sauce ($6), carrot cake ($5.75), brownie ($5) and a lemon bar ($4.25). I wish I could have bought more as I fully expected to pay $50. Since I had a long ride on the metro and a 3hr car ride home I knew my limit. There is a very small seating area inside. The Biscuit was delicious and I wish I would have bought two. The carrot cake was moist and decadent. The brownie was good and I almost wished I had bought the chili brownie. I cannot say enough AMAZING things about Sweet Crimes. I've been (sadly!) gluten-free for years and have been ordering from here ever since it was a pop-up operating out of a temporary place near U Street and 14th NW. I've always loved their coconut macaroons and fabulous chocolate chip cookies. But for us their claim to fame is their custom cake. Due to the pandemic we had 2(!) weddings - a small backyard marriage in 2020 and then a huge 2-day wedding the following year. Sweet Crimes made the wedding cakes for both events and both were absolute hits. Delicious, moist, with fabulous flavor and frosting combinations. We got *so* many compliments on them! The last anecdote I must share is that one time I placed a delivery order for the macaroons and was pleasantly surprised to get a message from the owner, Keri, advising me that she had *just* baked the macaroons before sending them off to us. They'd be warm and a little soft, and she apologized in advance if they got a little smushed on the delivery. Believe me, when I received it it was so good i wasn't worried AT ALL. I'm very torn on my review because I have celiac disease and am therefore dependent on bakeries like this to get my GF fix, however, I do feel this place has room for improvement. I think their top product is their scones. They are mostly the right texture and very close to a very good gluten full scone. I would definitely recommend this if available. I recently tried their biscuit breakfast sandwich. The biscuit was tiny tiny. A little on the dry side and could have been more buttery for my specific taste. Can be eaten in 1-2 bites. The carrot cake is also good - nice and moist with a delicious cream cheese frosting. The donuts were not good, sorry. They were hard pucks of dense dough. This bakery continues to exceed my expectations. The baked goods here are on par with regular gluten-y breads, cupcakes, biscuits, scones, etc. The biscuits are delicious and hold up to the egg and cheese sandwich perfectly, as does the bread for their delicious deli style sandwiches. No crumbly and brittle biscuits or bread like some other gluten-free breads. The carrot cake is also wonderful - not too sweet, nice balance of spices, and perfect texture, and they sell cake mix to make it at home. I'm not gluten free but i LOVE sweet crimes! On penn ave, its in a bit of a weird location and its a bit far from the metro. But the vibe and food is DELICIOUS! they're an amazing place for people with allergies and dietary restrictions! all their food is gluten free so there is no cross contamination and they carefully label whether things have dairy, soy, nuts, etc in them! they're small and only really have 1 table, so either go with a small group or expect to grab and go! I've had their breakfast sandwiches and they're amazing! so delicious and fluffy and the perfect size. Their macaroons are also to die for!!!!! the staff is always free, but they are sometimes a little slow. I also love how bright and fun and artsy the inside is! It's so nice to encounter a place that actually understands celiac disease after some disappointing experiences with cross-contamination at other places. This bakery doesn't even have any wheat flour on the premises! They also really came through on a large last-minute order for me--I was able to call and pick up a cake within an hour! Dear gluten free world, i am currently sitting in Sweet Crimes Bakery in DC. In front of me a selection of delectables: the lemon bar, the carrot cake, the brownie, banana bread and chocolate vanilla cupcake. I await my roast beef sandwich on a biscuit. My partner in "crimes" awaits his Ham and Gruyère also on a biscuit. The lemon bar is a buttery treat and my favorite with a subtly sweet shortbread crust. The brownie is soft and melt in your mouth. The right blend of fudgy and cakey, moist. My second favorite and I am not a chocolate lover. The cupcake has good flavor and texture, not overly sweet with smooth buttercream. The carrot cake is nicely spiced with a good amount of raisins and nuts and a traditional cream cheese frosting. The banana bread is nice and smooth, not wet or undercooked like I find many GF banana breads to be. It is not my favorite, but has good flavor and cake-like texture. Sandwiches are good on our biscuits--but next time I'm excited to try them on the hoagie bread. I hear Sweet Crimes is famous for their donuts, which were sold out by the time we arrived--so get here early and order some! Two small tables for indoor seating, homemade mixes available for purchase, and a wide array of baked goods that are not heavy, overly sweet or leaden and heavy like most gf products. Sweet Crimes has totally earned their five star rating on here. Since my last review, all of the new items I've tried from their menu have been amazing. Highly recommend placing a special order from one of their holiday menus during Thanksgiving or Christmas. I've been following Sweet Crimes for months, anxiously awaiting their opening! I finally got the chance to visit in person after I ordered some of their Christmas cookies to ring in the holiday season. The bakery itself is small and cozy. Because I visited right before Christmas, I think they didn't have as much in the display, but I could see some bread slices that looked quite good. The Christmas cookies were lovely. Some highlights were the jam thumbprint cookie, the ginger snap and the pecan snowball. My fiancée really liked the coconut macaroon. We also ordered some biscuits and ate them for breakfast the next day. They were a little chewy so we added egg and bacon to make sandwiches and then they were perfect! Lovely little sweet shop that safely fulfills my celiac plagued body. There are not many shops in DC that produce safe, edible goodies for individuals with allergies. There is Rise and now Sweet Crimes. The stuff here is DAMN good too. I have been twice now, and both times I had a donut (great texture), macaroons (best I've had in my life) and the blondie (a must). I hear they sell their treats at restaurants around DC too - lovely surprise! My only issue, and not that it's a deal breaker, but I was asking the staff what I could and couldn't eat. I cannot do any dairy or gluten, and every time I pointed to a baked good I wanted, they had to reference a handbook, and then even had to question if one had dairy or not in it, so I opted to not buy that cookie just to be safe. If they are truly allergy conscious, I hope over time they can be better prepared to answer questions. The last thing I need is a trip to the ER for consuming the no-nos. Maybe it was just that day? Regardless, I'll definitely go back and give it another shot. read more

(I don't die for any food) The blueberry scones with lemon icing are so good it's a crime! A Celiac's paradise! Sweet Crimes is a dedicated, entirely gluten free bakery with a number of vegan and other allergy-friendly options. They've been a presence in the community for years - selling their goods at various other restaurants and retail shops around town - but this is their first brick and mortar location, which is truly exciting. I went yesterday (11/28) and ordered a slice of pumpkin bread, a donut, and a dark chocolate mocha latte (they have oat milk and other milk substitutes!). The staff couldn't have been more friendly and the food did not disappoint. The pumpkin bread was moist and flavorful. The donut truly tasted every bit as good as a non-GF pastry (from what I can remember! ... I've been a Celiac for a while) I've also been getting their banana bread at another restaurant which sells their products for months now and it is outstanding! There isn't a ton of seating inside - two small tables in the window with a bench nook and some outdoor bistro-style tables when the weather allows. But they're also very close to Lincoln Park which has ample outdoor bench seating. I will say, the latte wasn't my favorite and had a slightly bland, burnt taste. Their coffee program is new and I'm sure it's a work in progress. But their food is rightly their focus and, be assured, it is absolutely a 10 out of 10! read more

Cute little shop with a variety of items in the display -- I appreciate that they have a variety of items that you don't see often at other bakeries. I was able to order quickly. I got a variety of pastries -- a brownie, slice of the carrot cake and a macaron. The brownie was good but a little heavy on the cocoa powder taste for me. I really enjoyed the carrot cake, I find oftentimes carrot cakes are very gooey almost underbaked but this one was cooked so well but at the same time wasn't dry. The macaron was also very pleasant. I would give the pastries as a whole 4/5 stars but the service I got at this shop was exceptional! Great little gluten free bakery serving a fantastic variety of sweet and savory treats. Breakfast sandwich options are available and very tasty. Great muffins, doughnuts and cupcakes - even if you can eat gluten you don't want to miss these. The service is typical of a bakery on a weekend morning , busy but pretty organized and as quick as they can be.
