Cute little shop! I tried the cherry tart, which was ok. It had a shortbread type of crust, which was tasty but a bit crumbly. The pie filling was a little bland--prefer more of a tart cherry filling. I also got a macadamia and white chocolate chip cookie, which had a good flavor but was so dry I didn't finish it. It seemed stale. The real winner was the artisan bread loaf. It had a nice flavor and crumb. It lasted pretty long, too, without drying out or molding. Sweet Crimes is a celiac's paradise! The facility is 100% gluten free so you can order stress free without any chance of cross contamination. In addition to it being stress free for me, my fiancé who doesn't have allergies enjoys it as well so it's a win win. The service is kind but expect to wait a while in their cute courtyard because they stay busy. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because their drinks are really, really bad. The cinnamon donut was AMAZING - it had the perfect amount of sugar, was warm, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The carrot cake was very soft, moist, and the cream cheese was perfectly light and delicious. $17 for a pizza with burnt cheese. Not only that I spent almost $32 total on two other items. Called the store and was informed that I would need to return the pizza in order to get a refund because of the owner's experience with scammers. Then she stated that she would give me half of a refund. The owner Kara had the audacity to say "we'll probably eat it, I don't know. " when I asked her what she was going to do with the burnt pizza that she wanted me to inconveniently drive back to her store. She would only provide a refund if I drove the pizza back to her she wouldn't even accept a picture arguing with me that the pizza wasn't burnt and that there was cheese on it. And, in her words "I approved it before they put it in the box." I should have checked the box before I left. Kara kept repeating herself about the policy. This was really bad business practice. The food tasted amazing, the bread didn't taste gluten free. It felt like the real deal. I got scared, so I called the shop up. The person on the phone was kind enough to answer my question regarding those two items. Reassuring that these are indeed gluten free. I told them there's no way, it taste too good to be gluten free. I am new to the area and have been looking for gluten free bakeries. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by every worker, one of them explained the menu to me, and there were samples inside. I got a biscuit sandwich, chai donut, and cinnamon roll. Each was absolutely incredible and delicious. The space was clean, and there even is a patio in the back! A dream come true! My partner just took a job in DC and one of the first things I did was check Google Maps for "gluten free". She's celiac and it is not often we find a spot with this many GF items and a space that gave us confidence that everything was safe. There are tons of goodies to choose from, including some delicious sandwiches. Every item we had (we had so much) was absolutely delicious. The donuts were some of my favorite ever. I wish I could have them everyday. We spent over an hour at the bakery and everyone was incredibly nice. Listen, it's all gluten free. It's pretty good. I've only had two things (cupcake and cake). They were both good. But, it's gluten free and something is definitely different in the pastry. By that I mean, I can actually taste the difference and it's good. Best of all, when I eat it (only talking about myself here), I don't feel as bloated or distended. I just presented and dove into an incredible birthday cake that I had ordered at Sweet Crimes. The design was elegant and beautifully presented. It was difficult to cut into something so lovely - but oh, so worth it! Every morsel of the cake just melted in my mouth and I watched as everyone at the celebration cleaned their plates. There was no gluten free requirement for any of the guests - but it's so good to know that if there were - that requirement would be met also. It is so hard to find good gluten-free baked goods anywhere in DC and this place hits a home run with absolutely everything I've tried. Their scones are amazing, donut holes are my Celiac son's favorite, Key lime pie slices are delicious, and chili brownies are just the right combo of rich, spicy & sweet! And the Ted Lasso shortbread cookies are truly out of this world- pure joy! We had a misunderstanding about the shipping policy when I'd emailed them (heads up - if you're shipping an order, you're selecting the ship date, not the delivery date), and they actually offered to drive the order out to my home in the DMV area to get it in time for my husband's 40th.
