I wish this place was in LA! Hands down my favorite dessert place in Bakersfield, Sweet Surrender has a little bit of everything. They have great cupcakes, cakes, cookies and make some pretty good espresso drinks here as well. I usually get their cupcakes and all the ones I've tried are great. My favorites are probably the Matterhorn and their Red Velvet. Matterhorn is a great chocolate cupcake with cream cheese frosting and chocolate shavings on top (I believe it's what they're known for). The Red Velvet cupcake comes with delicious cream cheese frosting and I love that there are chocolate chips in the cake itself. The cupcakes have a great texture and don't dry out even if you wait the next day to eat them. One thing that sets Sweet Surrender apart from other dessert shops/bakeries is that it's also a boutique. They sell cute jewelry, clothes, candy, and all sorts of knick-knacks (think little books and accessories like you'd find at Francesca's or Urban Outfitters). They have specials and sales pretty frequently too; one time I bought a necklace here for less than two dollars! I came here on a recommendation from a friend, and it's so good. After browsing the website, I decided to get a few cupcakes and bars: Neiman Marcus Bar - SOGOOD. I understand the hype. It's so nicely balanced and delicious. Billionaire Bar - love the thick layer of fudge, but it's a bit sweeter than I'd like. Matterhorn Cupcake - Delicious. And the cake is so surprisingly moist. Red Velvet Cupcake - My partner requested red velvet, and he loved it. Pink Champagne Cupcake - The texture of the cake is nice, but the buttercream was a little sweet for my tastes, and champagne taste was very faint. Pumpkin Cupcake - Delicious with the perfect amount of spice. Very airy and light cake which went so well with the cheesecake frosting. Avalanche Cupcake - Maybe my favorite cupcake! It's really easy to get into a conversation with them. The place itself is really big. Half of it sells clothes, jewelry, perfumes and so on, and the other half sells chocolate, baked goods etc. I always do a walk through around before I get my sweets. I really enjoy their turtle cupcake, it's a chocolate cake dipped in caramel and topped with walnuts. Their champagne cupcake is also good, but really sugary, I felt like my soul was being punched with sugar after eating a whole one. My ultimately favorite cupcakes though? Their coconut cupcake with frosting and toasted coconut on top, and their ROOT BEER CUPCAKE. Yes, ROOT BEER. Root beer flavored cake with root beer frosting. I just tried some coffee beans from here and it was the best espresso I have ever tasted ! My sister and I recently purchased a new espresso machine and grinder. I purchaSed Starbucks beans and they were okay but the beans from here blew them out of the water. Now we are only going to use the Starbucks ones for desperate times. I ordered two dozen cupcakes in a variety of flavors from them and they always turn out beautiful. My favorite cake is the chocolate cake. I call it the "death by chocolate cake" because it's so rich and delicious you can't stop eating it. Sweet surrender also sells cookies which are delicious as well. My favorite is the marble cookie. Update November 2018: The original review was posted after we had our consultation in and had placed our order in the summer of 2017. In the end we were very disappointed with Sweet Surrender order precision and their customer service. Sweet Surrender gave us the wrong flavors in our wedding cake. We had ordered our two favorite flavors, but when we cut into the cake in the middle of our wedding reception we discovered the entire cake was red velvet. While we were surprised, this was not enough to warrant a bad review. But the following was: We were told by a Sweet Surrender team member at our consultation that if we booked them as our cake vendor, we would be able to order a fresh, complimentary "top layer" for our one year anniversary. This was a deciding factor when choosing our cake vendor. HOWEVER, when I called to inquire and place the order for our top layer for our special anniversary I was told that that employee who promised me this was no longer with the company and that basically they were not going to honor the promise. They didn't even offer a courtesy discount if we wanted to pay and order one despite the mix up. So we will not be enjoying our wedding cake on our one year anniversary thanks to their poor customer service. Good thing we saved a bottle of our wedding wine. If this were anything but our wedding/one-year anniversary I wouldn't be as upset. I've worked in customer service for almost 2 decades and if a client (especially one paying hundreds of dollars for a cake) was made a promise by a consultant it doesn't change simply because that consultant is no longer with the company. Especially for a company that has been as successful as this one. Nothing more to say except that I am truly disappointed with this poor customer service experience. read more

My bf is from Bakersfield, so we come here once in a while to visit his family. I was surprised to see that it was listed on the show, "The best thing I ever ate". Giada mentioned the matterhorn cake which is a chocolate layered cake with vanilla frosting. That's one of my favorite combinations so I knew I had to try it. I ended up buying a few things to try, because everything looked so good. They had several cakes slices for sale but I came here for The Matterhorn. It was super moist and reminded me of a sprinkles black and white cupcake. I almost tried their Hawaiian and chocolate chip and Walnut cookies. Both were amazing!!! The chocolate chip one was thick and moist! I also bought a bag of their day old coconut macaroon cookies which were okay. If you like coconut though, it's perfect for you. I also had the smores and turtle cupcake. The chocolate cake was good in both. The turtle was too hard to eat, because the topping was literally like eating a piece of turtle chocolate. Husband and I were on our way to Napa Valley, and we made sure to make a slight detour to another Best Thing I Ever Ate location: Sweet Surrender in Bakersfield for the Matterhorn cake. Sweet Surrender is a small nondescript shop in a strip mall. It's cute, it's quaint, and the employees appeared to be local high school/college kids. They were earnest and sweet, and once they found out we came here based on the show, they were so appreciative and genuinely thrilled that they threw in an extra item. There is a great selection of baked goods (and tchotkes, if you're into that kind of thing), but we came for the Matterhorn cake, and it was even better than I thought it would be. Here's the thing: chocolate is not my go-to dessert. I mean, I really like chocolate, but when it comes to sweet stuff, I'll go 1) vanilla-butterscotch-caramel; 2) chocolate; and 3) fruit. But this chocolate cake was insanely moist and fudgy, and not overly sugary. The frosting, a white buttercream, is a light contrast to the denseness of the cake. I love this place! I am so glad we finally got a cute, LA style bakery + boutique in this town. I wish it was right next to Daddy O's so I could get tons of great stuff at once. This store has the cutest little knick knacks and some amazing goodies. I've had sweet surrender for many occasions throughout my life and have never been disappointed. My girlfriend isn't from here, so when she was visiting I had to stop here and get here a little treat. She got the Sprinkle cookie and I got the Sea Salt Caramel cookie and they were both so good! They also had a Hello Kitty section! AHHH! Give me Hello Kitty and I'm yours! My hubby found a Hello Kitty key cover and purse ---- why did he temp me? I picked the key cover --- I had to control myself! All of their cupcakes are soooo moist! And the frosting ---- so creamy! That's the two things I want in cupcakes ----- creamy frosting and moist cake ---- that's what makes a cupcake! I waited to review until after a few times we visited and is my conclusion: First visit we got a red velvet cupcake, pink champagne, chocolate hostess, an orange something cupcake and a lemon bar. We all devoured our picks and they were equally moist and tasty but a little much on the frosting I had to scoop some off but that did t go to wasn't my son was quick to ask if he could have it, he even wanted to eat the wrapper because there still was cake on it.
