Being Korean on pre-Mother's Day, we drove in the rain for the fusion food, they did not disappoint, food was seasoned well and yummy, Korean owner was very friendly and helpful making sure we ordered enough to get the full experience! The restaurant was small but packed with 1-long table w mouth 6-high stools and 2-round tables with 2-chairs each, with SYKO fridge and dry food shelves, but very roomy for what it had! I've been getting SyKo since their first location, and it's incredible. The combination and blend of flavors from these 2 cultures goes together better than you would imagine. SYKO is an all around worth-it foodie experience. The food is split into 3 menus: Syrian, Fusion, Korean. I was interested in the fusion food, so the co-owner's wife recommended we try the Labandu (pork dumplings covered in crispy chili oil over labne) and the Half Falafel Half Shawarma pizza (the pizza dough is actually a scallion pancake). Amazing recommendations - that Labandu dish is making us want to relocate to Brooklyn the fusion flavors work so well together. You can pinpoint the Middle Eastern flavors from the Korean flavors - the fresh labne from the spicy chili - and somehow they come together in a way that makes SO much sense. We walked in on a Saturday afternoon and were immediately immersed in what felt like a Middle Eastern and Korean grocery store. The walls are lined with items you'd only see if you were in a predominately Syrian or Korean populated area. There are 10 indoor seating spots and when it's nice out, 8 outdoor spots. Despite how busy the restaurant was, we were able to find a spot for our group with ease because a lot of people were getting take out. An all-around foodie experience, in a great part of Brooklyn, and TRUE fusion restaurant. Syrian-Korean fusion near Prospect Park! Super casual spot, it's just counter service with a few seats (we lucked out and got the only big table inside). This is a combo I never thought to exist but it was yummy! Portions were big and you could probably split a lot of their items unless you're super hungry; it was a lot of food but the bites were pretty balanced and didn't feel too heavy. So many options for food (they have just Syrian, just Korean, and then Syrian-Korean fusion) but I would recommend the fusion stuff for something new. I got the shawarma hotteok -- hotteok was crispy and Loaded with shawarma and all the works. And then we got the bulgogi kimchi hummus and bulgogi muhammar for the table; they give you pita to dip. Solid dips (the muhammar was my favorite) and really big portion sizes, one is prolly good for 3-4 people to split as a side/appetizer. Place some of the best fusion Syrian and Korean food I have had. Unbelievably flavored fries. They are so crispy so crunchy and so delicious. I don't know what sprinkled on them but there's this purple seasoning that is so flavorful. Some of the best fries. We got Lamandu and sojak sandwich. They were recommended by the worker. The first is a tzatziki dumpling fusion recipe. So good to dip the bread and fries from the sojak sandwich. So creamy and thick. The sandwich was on some bread I've never tasted before. Love the concept of the restaurant, which is Syrian and Korean fusion. We had the chicken shawarma platter, chicken Mandu, and the chicken shawarma hotteok. The rice and hummus for the shawarma were amazing; the chicken was good but needed a little bit more seasoning but it was still enjoyable. The Mandu was great, I wish I tried the beef ones. The habanero sauce the shawarma came with was so delicious and perfectly spicy. The hotteok was a little hard to eat as it was falling apart a bit but it was loaded and there were a bunch of different flavors and textures. I mostly tasted citrusy notes, but would have liked to taste more prominent Syrian and Korean flavors. There's very limited seating inside and it acts as both a grocery store and restaurant. After a long, exhausting walk around the Prospect Park loop, I was starving and wandered into Syko. We had no idea what to order, but the friendly cashier told us we couldn't go wrong with the chicken shawarma platter. He was absolutely right: It was a perfect sharing plate, so we added fries and hot sauce on the side. We decided to eat in, and honestly, it was the best food I have had in a while. The hummus? Chef's kiss. Who knew a Korean-Syrian mash-up could be this good? I didn't pick up any of the packaged foods or products from the market section this time around, but they had a great selection. Korean-Syrian food? Never heard of it and had to try it! Note this is more of a takeout place rather than sitting and dining - there is only one 3 person table inside and outside only 3 bar chairs. Like most, when I first saw the prices I was a little shocked. Two fat boys sandwiches paid in cash was $40! But once I got the food - oh boy they are LARGE portions. One fat boy can easily feed two people - so if you're trying to save money just buy one and split it between the two of you. I am also sure their pizza and combo plates could easily feed two as well. As a vegetarian, I appreciated all the vegetarian options. I got the tofu kimchi fat boy which consisted of outside being a thick scallion pancake and filling inside being fried tofu coated in cornstarch batter, kimchi, yellow pickled radish, lettuce and rice. It was extremely flavorful! And I loved the sauces that went along with it - if you love a little spice get the habanero sauce on the side (it's not just spicy it has almost a creamy element that I enjoyed greatly). It also came with gochujang sweet sauce and a more almost Chinese based chili oil sauce. I do wish the scallion pancake was more flaky (it's a little thick for my taste) but dipped in sauce was quite yummy. My husband got the beef bulgogi fat boy and loved it. This little Syrian Korean fusion spot really works with their limited space. They have only one indoor table and sometimes an outdoor table in decent weather months, but generally I'd say don't expect to dine in. The husband-wife owners are Syrian and Korean, and started with separate menus featuring each cuisine but have come to create fusion items that combine elements of both cuisines to make really delicious and creative dishes. Their fried chicken kimbap is a standout, with nicely crispy chicken wrapped in rice and seaweed which enhances both components. I also enjoyed the falafel wrap which featured pickled onions and really bright flavors. Solid falafel. Prices do seem a bit high for this small operation but I think the portions are big enough that the cost feels kinda justified. You can taste the love in the preparation that you don't get from mass produced food. They recently opened a market next door that's also worth checking out while you're there. We saw glowing reviews on FB, decided to drive from central Jersey and met friends there for lunch on a rainy Sunday. The owner was extremely warm and welcoming. We have good Mediterranean / middleeastern and Korean cuisines everywhere before and were excited to try the fusion version. The meal was FANTASTIC! The shawarma pizza and fat boy sandwiches, sampler and mandus were very all tasty and filling. Every bites tasted different and yet they blended so well together. At times, it felt like we were bouncing back between Seoul and Damascus, one bite at a time, haha. The owner spent a little bit of time to chat with us. One can easily tell both him and his BIL are passionate about what they do and the food clearly shows their passion. What can I say - this place is amazing! It satisfies the meat lovers but also the vegetarians. You have to come try it out yourself. I love the innovative Syrian + Korean fusion concept. Shish Taouk pita sandwich (fries inside) 2. Vegetarian platter (3 piece of falafel with 3 dip of your choice, fried cauliflower, grape leaf) 2. Syko shawarma pizza Everything was so good. What I love about the shish taouk sandwhich is they use this thin pita bread and it's toasted to such crispiness. I actually prefer this over the thicker softer pita. The vegetarian platter is every vegetarian's best friend. You can to pick 3 dips (I got the hummus, baba ghanoush, and spinach salad) as well as potato salad. The baba ghanoush is more on the smokier side which I like. Everything tasted very fresh. Now onto the highlight - the enormous Syko shawarmas pizza. My partner had ordered an entire pizza for himself despite the owner kept warning him it's a very sharable size. We certainly were amazed at how loaded the pizza was - you could barely even see the green onion pancake used as the pizza base crust. I love the crunch of the green onion pancake paired with the flavorful shawarma meat and refreshing pickled vegetables. If I wasn't watching my calories I will definitely eat one whole pizza on my own because it was so delicious. Honestly you can easily share this pizza with 4 people and all would be full. Come on man, SYrian/ KOrean fusion? That's a first one for me. But the inside joke is that I thought the place was a lot more spacious, because when I walked in , I saw one table and another table against the wall with barstools and had to ask the owner "do you have another location ?", and he mentioned they have a market around the corner (which we went to right after the meal). So my 2 buddies and I ate off this small table with 3 chairs and managed to fit almost everything on the table (okay , there was no room for the drinks, napkins, plates ...just what we ordered haha) So what did we order ? We did their pizza , and couldn't make our mind on the shawarma or felaffel pizza so the brother gave us half and half and we couldn't be more please. Syko was amazing! The chicken shawarma was juicy and full of flavor, and the lemon mint sushi was so refreshing. My boyfriend and I were glad we got to try it before the slushy machine gets put away for the fall, as the owner shifts to sundubu (Korean stews/soups) for the colder season. The baba ghanoush was creamy and delicious, and the sujok with cheese manousheh was packed with flavor. We were also given two dipping sauces--one garlic and one spicy--which paired perfectly with both the shawarma and the sujok. The owner was awesome--he gave great recommendations and kept checking in to make sure we were enjoying everything. The restaurant has turned into more of a deli/grocery setup, but there are still seats for dining in, which made the experience even cozier. I... really wanted to love Syko. To begin, the service was kind and exceptional. I love the story of the fusion of Korean and Syrian cuisine and how this restaurant came to be, and appreciate how the restaurant organizes its menu. Syko is definitely a take-out restaurant, and there is very limited seating inside and has a few seats outside. I wouldn't come here with a big group unless you were planning to do take-out. I really wanted to love the food and researched what to order before visiting, but left disappointed. I got the Fat Boy bulgogi wrapped in a scallion pancake (on the Korean menu), as well as the Shawarma Pizza (on the fusion menu). Fat Boy 3.5/5: It is a really great concept but I found elements of this order lacking. The scallion pancake wrap was a bit overcooked or possibly stale, and at certain points was hard to physically bite through. The bulgogi was good, though it could have been more flavorful. I enjoyed the pickled yellow carrot and thought that added great acidity and wish there had been more of that. I was perplexed and did not enjoy the rice that was included in the wrap, as the scallion pancake was already very thick. Shawarma Pizza 2/5: Visually, it's a beautiful looking pizza pie with lots of different colors. Unfortunately, I could not tell that the meat on the pizza was shawarma, as it felt overcooked and flavorless. I also don't know that the pizza really combined Korean inspired ingredients and Syrian inspired ingredients in the most thoughtful way. One of the owners was nice enough to walk us through the menu, and explanied the Syko stands for SYrian and KOrean. Given that, we opted to get something fusion, as well as one of the Korean dishes. Even though the bulgogi fatboy was labelled as Korean, it definitely is a Korean American fusion. It's 2.5 lbs of a hulking sandwich, with rice and bulgogi encased in a scallion pancake. The fusion dish we tried was the falafel pizza, which was a crispy scallion pancake as the base, topped with homemade labneh, cucumber kimchi, and homemade falafel. While we thought the fatboy was big, when we weighed the pizza we realized it came out to over 3 lbs! Both of the dishes were delicious and full of flavor, although my friend and I both agreed we gave the pizza a slight edge. The prices are a little on the higher side, especially for a takeout place, but it felt pretty fair given the huge portions. One dish alone could easily feed two. Definitely stop by here if you're craving either Korean or Syrian, or just looking for something new. Had an amazing meal here yesterday. Really unique and incredible fusion. I love Syrian and Korean food. They had a pita type sandwich but instead of pita it was a Korean pancake. It was sooo delicious. All the sauces were home made and you could tell. The ingredients were also fresh and they put a good portion of meat in there. Also had some lentil soup which was delicious and not too salty, like many soups I've had. It was a little pricey, but that's the world we live in now. I don't mind it being a little pricey if you can really tell the ingredients are quality and they are making almost all the components in house. That takes time. First time coming here and I decided to get the Bulgogi Fatboy which was a korean pancake with bulgogi as the stuffing wrapped together with radish, rice, lettuce and sauce. Our chef absolutely PACKED it, that he could barely even wrap it and had to double wrap. And needless to say that it was a delicious meal! Great neighborhood spot made by the neighborhood! I first went in the summer and loved the seasonal nangmyun cold noodle soup. The brine of the icy broth was just what I needed in the hot brooklyn sun. I recently returned this winter with my friend visiting from Seoul and we split the fusion falafel bowl and baklava. The hummus and falafel were good and really paired well with the fresh cucumber kimchi. The family running SYKO are very friendly. I wish they would balance better with the fresh or pickled elements and have a lighter hand on the bulked-up rice and starches.
