The snapper pastrami brought a wonderful smoky depth that paired beautifully with the horseradish cream, and it was one of the few dishes that felt balanced, intentional, and memorable. A genuinely excellent start. Things became more disappointing once the entrees and cocktails arrived. The Rohan duck breast itself was cooked very well -- tender, properly rendered, and clearly prepared with care -- but what was never communicated by the staff was just how sweet the overall composition of the dish would be. Pairing that with cocktails that also leaned heavily sweet made the entire meal feel one-note and overwhelming by the midpoint of dinner. The red beans and rice suffered from the same issue. Despite the spice topping, the dish skewed surprisingly sweet and didn't complement the duck at all. What frustrated me most was that this felt entirely avoidable. At a restaurant with a cocktail reputation this strong, I would expect the wait staff to guide guests toward drinks that balance the meal rather than amplify the sweetness already present in multiple courses. Instead, no recommendations or warnings were offered, and the meal suffered because of it. I was especially underwhelmed by the Harlequin cocktail, which seems to receive a massive amount of online hype. In practice, it simply didn't justify the reputation. It wasn't bad, but it lacked the complexity and "wow" factor you would expect from a signature drink that's so heavily talked about. Overall, there are flashes of excellence here, particularly in the appetizer course and technical preparation, but the lack of thoughtful service and pairing guidance made the experience feel far less polished than advertised.

This individual who claims to be the 'owner' of this place actually made a great effort to write me three emails insulting everything from my appearance to my hometown (where he claims to have lived for 17 years FYI). He actually posted a response to my review that was such an arrogant fabrication of reality that I was simply dumbfounded. Why would a self proclaimed business owner actually stoop to this level of idiocy? While he may have been given a small percentage of this business for 'sweat equity' he does not in fact own much of anything save the dubious title of 'extremely ignorant douchebag". A disgrace to the wonderful city and superlative food scene of New Orleans. If you want to know the truth simply read the reviews of real local patrons. Sylvain cleverly presents itself as a spot for locals, yet in reality it is just another FQ tourist trap with an appealing, off the beaten path storefront. AMAZING BRUNCH! we went on Sunday the 6th of October. It was OH SO GOOD! from the french toasted topped with a apple pecan compote to my boyfriends braised short rib hash with a friend egg. I couldnt stop eating he's dish! it was DELICIOUS! we also had a chicken and buiscuit as an appetizer it was really good and the soup of the day which was a roasted red pepper and sweet potato soup. The soup was so good I wanted to lick the plate. Sylvain has made a *MAJOR* comeback since the new executive chef took over, and it's easily one of the best dining experiences I've had in the French Quarter! The food is outstanding--my personal favorite is the beef cheeks, which were cooked to absolute perfection. The flavors are rich and memorable. The ambiance is intimate, making it a perfect spot for a cozy, enjoyable meal. The general manager was present, making rounds and personally checking on guests, which added a thoughtful touch to the service. The entire staff was friendly, attentive, and really made us feel welcome. If you haven't been to Sylvain recently, it's definitely worth a visit. In all the craziness that was the Festival, we were surprised and delighted to be treated with such care at a great restaurant on a busy, busy night. Though there were no available tables, we got a drinks-only courtyard table and wisely put ourselves completely in the care of the supremely capable Dawn. She picked cocktails for us that were perfect. She was wonderful, somehow finding a dinner table for us in the gorgeous courtyard and handing us over to another server, who took good care of us. I recently had the chance to try Sylvian, and overall, it was a pretty good experience! The food was solid -- flavorful and satisfying. One thing that stood out to me was the cornbread. I was expecting it to be a bit sweeter, but even though it wasn't quite what I anticipated, it still had a nice texture and taste that worked well with the rest of the meal. The dark lighting was a plus as well . What really made the visit memorable was the staff. Everyone was incredibly friendly and welcoming, from the moment I walked in until the moment I left. Sylvan is a great spot with an awesome atmosphere--definitely one of those places that feels very "New Orleans" the moment you walk in. The service was a standout, with a friendly and attentive wait staff that really elevated the experience. Food-wise, it was a bit of a mixed bag for me. The crab and dumplings just weren't my thing, but the braised short ribs were solid and well-executed. The real highlight of the night, though, was the crème brûlée--easily the best thing we had and absolutely worth ordering. Overall, I'd give Sylvan a solid 4 stars. Very cute place! It's adorable and dim and just has a lovely ambiance. We came for dinner around 6-7. I had the chicken sandwich, and I just wasn't impressed. The chicken was cut so thick and dry. It was like a pound of chicken breast, fried. My friend had a pappardelle dish and she found it a little underwhelming. When a party of two approached, we politely moved aside without issue. Kitan then pointed us toward our table and said, "People come to New Orleans for the sun." Apparently, heat exhaustion is part of the dining experience. Even the couple behind us commented on how rude the staff was and decided to leave. Once seated, we could hear Kitan complaining to Adam about our refusal to wait in the scorching sun. Adam apologized for exaggerating the wait time, but that did little to make up for the terrible service. When I asked for a refill, his response was, "I'll think about it." Later, two smaller groups arrived and were seated at the same empty table we had been told was only for large parties. So much for that rule. The food was good, although it was served on a chipped plate. Overall, the meal couldn't make up for the rude, inconsistent, and unnecessarily hostile service. Apparently, shade, refills, and basic courtesy are all premium add-ons here.

I felt it was finally time to post a comprehensive 2026 update for anyone looking for the current scoop. The Atmosphere Watching this place evolve over the last ten years has been a journey. It used to have those glamorous, "dressed-to-the-nines" Southern vibes, but nowadays it's much more laid-back, you'll see plenty of casual visitors in sneakers at the bar. While I occasionally miss the old-school glitz, the soul of the place is still there. I am sure this can change depending on the day. The Courtyard: They have a stunning outdoor space that I surprisingly still haven't sat in after all these years! Just a heads-up: Happy Hour is currently inside only. I'm really hoping they eventually expand those specials to the courtyard. Happy Hour & Value The days of the legendary 25-cent oysters are long gone, but the current April 2026 pricing is still fair for the quality you get. Please note all of this are estimates in pricing and it could be market price depending on the day but they are typically this pricing consistently: Raw Oysters: ~$1.50 per oyster. Char-grilled Oysters: A must-order. They are buttery, topped with grated cheese, and perfectly salty. If I'm picking my top 3 char-grilled spots in the city, this is on the list. The cheese here does not get very hard, it has a softer style. Drinks: Happy Hour cocktails run about $11-$12. If you want a beer, they have $5 PBRs, but keep in mind there is no beer on tap (at least I do not think so???? and if they do it is VERY limited). The Service (The Real Highlight) What keeps us coming back year after year is the staff. They truly make the experience: Jerry: Our waiter for this most recent visit. He was professional, attentive, and exactly the kind of presence this establishment needs. We received top tier service. Alex: He used to be behind the bar and was always so genuine, hospitable, and hardworking. We did not see him this visit and not sure if he still works here. Money: An absolute pro who has been holding it down as an oyster shucker for years! Big Mike: I still have fond memories of the years Big Mike spent shucking oysters and teaching us his techniques and I do not believe I will ever leave him out of the reviews here because he always made the night feel like a party. Final Thoughts While the yearly specials shift, the oysters remain impressively consistent. My only request? Please bring back the Bloody Mary oyster happy hour! It would be great to have cocktails at a lower price to be competitive for local areas. We already look forward to our next visit. Thank ya'll!

The food was good but not great. In particular the patatas Bravas were not authentic. Instead of the traditional yellow, very eggy topping, they used some sort of hot condiment and maybe mayo? A trend I'm seeing in many newer restaurants is charging for "bread service". This ridiculous and needs to stop. I am not paying $8 for bread. No serious restaurant does this. Can you imagine paying for bread at Galatoires or Commanders? The world would come to an end. All in all I probably won't return but I wish it well.
