I have been in here twice and cannot believe the experience I just had. While eating dinner on the patio, approximately 20 roaches came crawling and flying around the patio. I mean on the walls, the floors, the tables.. everyone on the patio, our party and others, began jumping up and screaming. The worst part is that even though we did not get to finish our meals before running inside, we did not get one apology and did not get one thing removed from our tab. When we called to let them know how unprofessionally it was handled, the manager said "well wooden patios all have roaches." Well, maybe you shouldn't serve customers food out there? read more

Lunch is pricey. Lunch menu missing fajitas, chilli rellenos, and some other staples. Of course you can pay higher dinner prices for them. My San Miguel enchiladas were just OK. BEWARE!!!! Came here with a large group. Had a reservation for 11:30 on a Friday. Got there, the table wasn't ready. The hostess first claimed we didn't have a reservation. When the hostess finally checked and saw the reservation, which there was only one for the entire day, would only say "we have to get your table ready". No apology. Plus the restaurant wasn't even full so I couldn't understand the big issue to begin with. Food arrived extremely late. When the late orders arrived it was cold...every plate!!! 4 people in my group sent their plates back because they were cold...the others were afraid of the possible ramifications for sending back horrible food. I WILL NEVER COME BACK THIS RESTAURANT OR ANY OF THEIR AFFILIATES . If you enjoy bland cold\off temperature food then this is the place for you. read more

I have been to all 3 locations several times, but the most recent visits were to Woodway and Eldridge locations. I found both to be mediocre at best, especially for the price. My wife's fish tacos had no lettuce or cabbage and poor quality fish. Also, the prices were several dollars higher than the prices shown online for lunch, maybe because it was Saturday. I don't like that either. The cost for 2 was $32.50 plus tip of $5 and the food was not worth it. I will not be going back! read more

Sadly, I did not see the reviews for this place on yelp! Wished I had before yesterday, as my husband says, we would not know if we did not experience it for ourselves. With that said, my family and I went to celebrate my birthday yesterday, I was on their mailing list and received a a "free" birthday dessert with any order. Since it was Wednesday, we ordered the "1/2 price fajitas" (no coupon needed). When I presented my free bday letter to the server, he told me I could either take the 1/2 price on the fajitas or the free dessert, but not both!!! He stated those were the restaurants rules, not his. WOW, my review of the food,I've been there twice, first and last! The fajitas were tender and somewhat tasty, they were not traditional, nor authentic. The margaritas are small but potent. They definitely need to work on their queso recipe. I was a patron at Sylvia's Westheimer location from the time it opened until the time it closed. I have not lived in the area for years but you make the trip to eat her menudo. Unfortunately the other locations do not serve it. I have asked for it a few times and made my case each time that they should serve menudo at the other locations. Went here for HRW. This was almost my worst experience, ever. I walked in,alone, at 11:00. When I asked for the HRW menu, I was asked for my reservation. I hadn't made one. My experience with HRW is I don't need one for a single person at 11:00. When I tried to make one at Picos and Radical Eats, they just laughed. "We'll try to fit you in". Both empty when I showed up. At La Casa del Caballo, I came w/o reserv at 11 with no problem. So you can imagine my surprise when Sylvia's hostess refused to seat me w/o a reservation. It wasn't that they were full, apparently the kitchen has to know ahead of time how many HRW meals to plan for. I turned and walked out the door. The manager followed me out, apologized, and said they could accommodate me. The food was good and waitstaff very friendly. So seriously, reservations for HRW, or not? read more

The attention was great, especially the gentlemen that refills the salsa, but the food portions for the price were not a good value. My wife and I went on Friday for happy hour and were promptly seated after a 5min wait. Unfortunately we arrived after 6pm and were too late for the Titanium margaritas so we ordered the house margaritas. After that, we moved on to the appetizers. We ordered the tacos, ceviche and nachos. Too bad they were 2 tiny tacos for $8+, the nachos were on chips the size of small Doritos and we had a hard time finding fish in the ceviche. There are better places close by if you really want "Fine Tex-Mex" so we will not be going back to Sylvia's. read more

Pet friendly patio!!! Yay came here with my boyfriend and our dog last night and it was amazing... i ordered the chicken enchiladas with verde salsa and my boyfriend ordered the beef fajitas both were flavorful and super yummy, good service we really enjoyed it !!! Their Mother's Day management was a complete disaster. They had one very inexperienced hostess that had to deal with the management team over reserving. Waited 30 minutes after our reservation time with no concept of whether we were 10 minutes away or two hours away from being served. I was bringing my family here for the first time. I was really looking forward to it and it was terrible. We left Syvia's and got right in at Escalantes. Escalantes treated us great, wonderful service and the food was good. Unfortunately, Sylvia's management needs to step up to the Varsity level if that is the game they want to play. read more

We are very disappointed in the Management at this location. This was our first time at Sylvia's it was for Mother's day brunch that the web site said started at 10 am. We arrived around 9:50 and found the doors locked. After waiting till 10:15 I called and was told they did not open till 11:00. I explained to the manager what was on the web site and I was told I was wrong that it was for the Wood way location only. By 10:30, 6 families were waiting outside saying the same thing about the web site. When they finally did open I confronted the Manager and showed him the posting. He said he could not be responsible for what the web people posted. WHAT!! That's right no sorry for the inconvenience. NO APOLOGY AT ALL HE BLAMED IT ON THE WEB SIGHT PEOPLE. Ironically, I loved everything except the enchiladas! The service was off the charts, they seated me, took my order, and brought my food fast while refilling my iced tea and salsa every 2 minutes. The salsa was great, it was the warm kind of salsa and had just the right amount of richness to its flavor, like a tiny hint of the hearty tomato taste of marinara balanced with the light taste of salsa. The guacamole was great too. The iced tea was top notch as well. I got the mexican enchilada sampler. The rice and beans it came with were very good. The enchiladas were not my favorite though. Two were mostly meat enchiladas, and I like salt, but they had too much salt. One enchilada was a mole enchilada and I don't usually like mole but actually that one was good, with hints of chocolate, and was better than other mole sauces. I forget what the fourth enchilada was but it was my least favorite. In a way, it is better that the enchiladas were where I had the problem, because you cannot change the salsa, tea, guacamole, or service at a mexican place, but you do have 30 other choices for the entree, and I am sure some will be great if I figure it out. read more

Tried Sylvia's for the first time tonight. We were greeted and promptly shown our table. I ordered the Beeville carne asada. The food was tasty, however it seemed like it may have sat out for a while because there was no steam coming from the plate of grilled steak and onions, as you would normally see. Service was terribly slow, my water glass was empty for at least 5 minutes and it seemed like forever until our food was brought out. The frustrating part was the three people "holding up" the hostess desk, they could have gotten my water. On the way out, the hostess was rummaging through her department store bag which she kept at the podium. If this is what a Sunday evening at 8 is like, I probably won't be back, as it seems the inmates run the prison here. read more

Went there on Sunday because my sister had recommended it and we met there. Party of six and a baby. The place was big and had rustic decor. Host was par but the Mgr (I guess because he was in a tie no apron) did not greet us at all while he was standing right next to the host. Sat down and had the regular chips and salsa we ordered queso (same level as a velveeta cheese) I will say it was a bigger portion than what I'm used to but still par. Wide selection of enchiladas, I had the mole because that's how I grade a Mexican restaurant, and it fell on the same level of box mole from the shelf. So I don't know if the box stuff is that good or the mole there is that plain. My wife had a pick 3 and her enchilada was bland. Never had our chips refilled so some of the queso had to be left. Drink refills were slow and when the check came we had to pay a 20% tip when the menu says it should of been 18%. They are proud of their food with those prices but not really what I would consider a premium product. We won't go back even if invited. The food is very good, because I live in the area I always visit this place and have liked the food and drinks a lot. During happy hour the house margaritas are cheap and really good. I should have learned my lesson when every time I've walked in it smells like someone has cleaned up vomit using that pink sawdust from grade school. I should have learned my lesson when every time I've ordered an appetizer it has come to my table spoiled, and Sylvia is all too happy to replace it (but still charge me for the inedible food). I should have learned when each meal my wife and I have ordered 1 of us returns the food uneaten, and the other risks it while noting the food was likely sitting in a fridge waiting to be nuked. Alas I didn't and today I pay for it yet again. This is the worst Mexican food in the city. It is overpriced for what they are serving. This is definitely one of the best Mexican restaurants and restaurants in general in Houston. Sylvia has taken time to create the best recipes for all of her different enchiladas. The restaurant also has higher quality meat than the other Mexican restaurants in town. I can't say which dish is my favorite, but I have tried many and never been disappointed. My friends and family will say the same thing. The queso is also some of the best in Houston!!!! The staff's also great! read more

Recently had lunch here with 2 girlfriends. The fajitas were excellent I have to say and the beans and rice. Their salsa and chips were delicious. Homemade tortillas, great. the only dissapointment was their frozen margaritas and sangria. The margarita was mediocre and the sangria was very bad. Mex restaurants are typically know for their fajitas and margaritas, so Please Sylvia, evaluate your margarita recipe and improve. Check the quality of the sangria before you serve it. Went for lunch today with someone who had never been to Sylvia's. The salsa is great. My friend had a combo plate and I ordered two cheese enchiladas without beans and rice. Now, on the lunch menu, two cheese enchiladas WITH beans and rice is $7.95. Because I ordered them WITHOUT beans and rice, I was charged $9.00. When I brought it to the waiter's attention, he said that ala carte enchiladas are $4.50 each and walked away. Not quite sure what type of cheese they are using, but it was too greasy for me. The food here is wonderful! Try one of the enchilada sampler plates if you can't decide - I had the south of the border and each enchilada was uniquely delicious. My favorite was the pork. And don't worry - though there are 4, they are small enough that you won't hate yourself for eating every last bite of them. My husband and I were recently uptown & decided to go to Sylvia's for lunch since we've heard so much about it. Of course we had to try the enchiladas since that is their speciality. We were both disappointed with our meals. I had spinach which was so bland & tasteless; I had to salt them, which is pretty bad. My husband's cheese enchiladas were equally mediocre. Not impressed. We ate at the bar & the bartender, although extremely busy, made sure to constantly check on us. He's the reason I gave a star to this place. I hate giving this restaurant 2 stars because the service was excellent. Our party of five was seated immediately on a Saturday night. Our drinks were being refilled before we could even finish them. I saw a write up in the Houston Chronicle about the cabrito that Sylvia's serves and how it was very good. I had been waiting for a special opportunity to go eat the great cabrito. Went for my birthday two weekend ago, the decor was nice, the waitstaff was good, the food portions were big, but the cabrito, I was so anxious to eat , was tough and bland. We were a party of six and everyone thought their food was just ok. The frozen margarita was very strong. The salsa was fresh and good. We ordered dessert, the tres leches cake, how can a Mexican Restraurant go wrong with that, well it was not good at all, it had a funny taste to it. My sister stated Walmart has better tres leches cake, so that tells you something. It was pricey for the mediocre food that we ate, we will probably not be returning and would not recommend it to our friends and family. read more

A recent trip to this Sylvia's location left me quite disappointed. They charged for top shelf margaritas when just house margaritas were ordered. The food here is mediocre at best and complaints have fallen on deaf ears. The manager, Christian Wade, has not responded to my complaint, which speaks volumes about their concern for the customers that visit the restaurant. I will NEVER be back at this location, my money will be spent where they actually provide good food and service! read more

My better half and I visited here for brunch, and I was not impressed (disappointed). The pictures and description of the brunch are not accurate to what was presented by no means. My honey got a pancake off of the buffet and it was extremely hard on one side (as if the pancake was pre-made and stored on the chaffing dish to keep warm). He was unable to eat the "pancake" and resulted in requesting flour tortillas (which were excellent). Some of the Mexican dishes were "dry" due to the sauce dissolving after being on the heated chaffing dish for an extended period of time. The cold selections were extremely limited as were the hot selections. I was expecting this brunch buffet to compare to that of Cadillac Bar (which is outstanding) and provides a huge selection of several types of food. One good thing that I can present here is the pleasant patio. However, this will be my last visit to Sylvia's Enchilada Kitchen. read more
