Went there for lunch while my wife was getting a root canal it was dead about 2:30 sat in the bar it's right across the street from 2nd Baptists main campus. I had forgotten my mask, told them I was vaccinated but they made me wear one of theirs then pointed me to a table in the bar but didn't give me a menu, so no one was seated near me for 15 feet, so why be smug about the mask? Why anyone in a restaurant cares since you eat without one? Anyway It's a very nice place on the inside and flamico music in the bar was excellent really nice. The bar tender was nice and explained to me the menu is accessable only by phone so once I found how to access the lunch menu on my phone I ordered the ground beef enchiladas plate, the chips and salsa were a 10 and the rice and beans on my plate were great to but the enchiladas were sad to say about a 4 on a scale of 1 to 10 so watery and tasted watered down disgusting really. I first learned of Sylvia's when I read an article in the Miami Herald from a nationally syndicated food critic naming the "best Tex-Mex restaurants in Houston". I was pleased to learn Sylvia's was just a short drive from where I was staying. Parking was easy, we were warmly greeted and seated immediately. The atmosphere is cozy, and indeed does lend itself to being in a "kitchen". It was a bit warm, the A/C was not quite working well that day. All servers and buspeople were friendly and the service was on point and quick. Fresh hot salsa n' chips were immediately provided. Our drinks, a Perfect Margarita and a Beer 'Rita, were both good. For apps, we had the queso de campo (fried cheese) with tortillas and topping sauces (very good) and ceviche. The ceviche was kind of dry and came out in a ball like from an ice cream scoop. It was OK, but my preference is the moist Peruvian version served in a bowl. To get the best sampling experience for the enchiladas we ordered the North of the Border, and South of the Border. These dishes are enchilada "flights", mini-enchiladas with 4 varieties per platter. Together, they will fill you up. The North platter includes the Refugio (blended cheddar cheese with chili gravy), Sarita (Mexican vegetables with cheese in cream sauce), Lubbock (ground beef in gravy) and Laguna Madre (crab in seafood sauce). The Refugio was just "ok", the Sarita was different and delicious, the Lubbock was very meaty and satisfying, and the Laguna Madre was a little too "fishy" for my taste. The South platter includes the Mexico City (chicken with salsa verde and sour cream), Morelia (cheese with lettuce, radishes and onions in red chile sauce), Hidalgo (grilled pork with red sauce and avocado) and Puebla (chicken with traditional mole' Poblano). Mexico City and Morelia were good. The Hidalgo was perhaps the most satisfying of all, and the red sauce (HOT) made me chug my beer rita right down! The Puebla was also very good; perhaps the best mole' I've experienced. Sides of rice and refried beans were "just ok". We were very full after the entrees, but just couldn't resist chocolate(!) tres leches for dessert. It's drier than the Cuban version I'm used to, but delicious nonetheless and the chocolate's a nice touch. After the meal, the very cordial on-duty manager stopped by to chat and ensure that we had a good meal. Went on Mothers Day for dinner and they did not disappoint. Greeted by friendly staff and quickly seated. The service and food was great. I ordered the four mini enchiladas which you can get four different kinds so it was nice to try different ones. My dad got the fajitas which he said was well flavored and had lots of grilled onions (which he loves). Only wish they would have came out sizzling hot when brought to the table. My son got the beef tacos and he loved it (good portioned and still had left overs to bring home). The restaurant was very clean and all staff followed all Covid 19 protocols. We came at 6:30 on a Friday evening and it was packed. We waited 20 minutes for a table. Two stars because there was nothing special about this restaurant and the service was poor. I would expect the enchiladas to be excellent. Rather they tasted below average for above average prices. I got the Lubbock which is ground beef enchiladas. I could have made as good of enchiladas at home. Those cost $14.75. Secondly I ordered the tortilla soup which was small size for the price of $5.75 and did not taste good. There are not many vegetarian options. The service was poor as I ordered my soup right away but it didn't come out until 25 minutes later. I want to like this place. I really do. we need a place like this in the neighborhood. But the service here is awful. nice every three years or so I try again and it's no better. Tonight I walked in and no greeting. The front staff were fawning over some regular. I went to the bar and sat down to order a drink and food. There were staff members everywhere milling around. I could not even get eye contact with any of them. After sting at the bar for a little over 5 minutes, I got up and left. No one noticed me leaving. It was actually surreal...like I might not be visible. I went across the street to Escalante and within the same five minutes had a greeting, a seat, a bowl of chips, a drink and my order was made. We order from Sylvia's about once every 1 - 2 weeks and the food is always great. We usually pick up our order because we want their fabulous margaritas and they can not be delivery in the state of Texas. So tonight we order without margaritas and the food was delivered by CHOW NOW, totally a disaster. They did not even come to our front gate but left the food sitting on the ground on the far side of the garage. By the time we realize it was there it was cold and not edible. The food is good, and the staff is attentive. I asked for a couple of extra tortillas - plain tortillas - and Sylvia's charged me $1.50 for extra tortillas. Tortillas are free in every Mexican restaurant in town. Even Sylvia's will bring as many chips and as much salsa as you want. But $1.50 for three tortillas. Sylvia's has crazy upcharges for extras - this isn't the first time this has bit me. But tortillas? That is the sort of thing that can piss you off. read more

We eat out at a Mexican restaurant at least once a week and were excited to try Sylvia's. However, this will not be a new choice for us. First the waitress was extremely forgetful and we both had to tell her our selections at least 3 times. Then they bring the entrees out and my order has mozzarella cheese instead of goat cheese on it. I can understand a mistake but when the waitress insists it's goat cheese until I tell her I have a milk allergy. Then she picks it up immediately and says I'll be back. My husband is completely finished by the time she is bringing my entree. When the check comes, there was no comp for the poor service. She leaves again, we wait another 10 min and they take 50% off my entree. The manager and waitress were both very unfriendly and rude. This is our go to for fajitas in Houston. Way better than Pappasitos and is never over crowded. The perfect margarita is grand! It is so smooth you can barely taste the tequila but don't let that fool you. If you like spicier sauce, ask for the habanero sauce. It will knock you down. I love it! We went for brunch for Mother's day and wasn't very impressed. Not because of the food but I don't think they expected such a big crowd. We will try again though on a normal Sunday. read more

Sylvia has finally opened her second location closer to civilization. Her original location on Westhiemer and Dairy Ashford was such a long trek, but one I was willing to make 2-3 times a month. With Sylvia opening her Woodway location she has managed to settle a couple of high profile subjects on Houston Yelp. a) can a restaurant duplicate it's success b) Where can I find good Tex-Mex? Sylvia has exceeded all expectation with this new location. It has been a slow process working up to a full menu. She has been open for six weeks and because of the complexity of her menu, it's been a training in progress. You can imagine with 14 different sauces and 10 different stuffing for her enchiladas, a kitchen can get overwhelmed with all the combinations. I have made it 4 times in the six weeks, each week trying one of her specialties, making sure the kitchen is up to speed. Tex-Mex is subjective, depending who you're talking too, you will get a different opinion what is Tex-Mex or Authentic Mexican food . All food is regional, people adapt to what is available to them. Sylvia growing up in Brownsville, TX has brought up recipes that have been in that region for a few generations. I might be biased, because I grew up down in the Valley, but anything from the Rio Grande Valley is real Tex-Mex. No where else in Texas do two cultures and two cuisines collided to give us this great food Sylvia is cooking up in her restaurants. The restaurant is beautiful, she has taken an old Vallone concept (Grotto), which has been Mi Cocina, and PJ's Blue Water Grill and made a Tex-Mex haven. The bar is custom wood and the dining room has a antique Mexican kitchen sitting in the middle. For that brief dining experience she manages to take you out of Houston and into her grandmothers kitchen. The enchiladas are excellent, my favorite being the Carnitas with Mole and the wife is still a huge fan of her Tampico shrimp enchiladas with the Sarita with Roasted Corn and Calabacita and the Chicken with Verde sauce. Sylvia's Fajitas and Carne Asada are still the best in town, I would strongly recommend the homemade corn tortillas. Sylvia's new location also has a really nice patio with a canopy and lined with Magnolia trees. I love this restaurant and I am glad I have closer to work and home. read more

Sylvia's van has great food!! Who'da thunk it!?! There are a variety of tacos and enchiladas, a torta, and chips and salsa. I settled on the chicken mole enchilada and it was honestly delicious!! The mole sauce was excellent. Beans and rice come with it for $8, which is a good deal for a very tasty lunch. Word must be out though, because there was a decent sized crowd waiting for their orders. Even so, the wait wasn't too long and was very well worth the time invested. The servings are perhaps slightly small for the price, but what do you want for a lunch special? I was very pleasantly surprised at the quality of food coming out of this truck!! The absolute worst customer service ever. The waiter or hostess refused to sit and serve my mom, myself and my three year old unless I threw away my half finished flavored soda drink. I reassured him that I would of course buy something to drink but he continued to be rude and told us to step outside and finish my flavored soda water or throw it away. Came here on a Friday night and it wasn't busy at all- the hostess was not having a good night because she didn't know how to smile or say hello. We asked to sit at a table by the window to have a view of the patio and she looked so annoyed and bothered! Our waitress was very sweet and attentive. Sad to say that was the only good thing about this place. We wanted to try the enchilada platter including chicken, beef, veggie and seafood but absolutely NO SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED!!!- $20 a platter you think they would allow us to switch up the tortilla from corn to flour! Ended up getting a combo platter instead. Flavors were very bland... I expected a kick of heat or spice or garlic or cumin or lime- I tasted NOTHING. Even the salsa tasted like tomato juice... this place doesn't know what salt or pepper is! The margaritas were also very weak... I barely tasted or felt the Tequilla- not worth $11 per drink! They were so weak that I asked to top it off with Grand Mariner but of course got charged extra for that. Ended up with a $90 bill and it's not worth it, do not recommend and won't be back. Had dinner there last night. It was a large party. The service was amazingly great. Everyone of the servers were very friendly and knew everything on the menu. That was truly a wonderful experience. Somehow, I've never been to either location of Sylvia's. Finally took the time to check it out and it was quite delicious. The North/South of the Border plates were just the thing I was looking for. A way to try a bunch of enchiladas without getting uncomfortably full. It was a great variety and they were all very tasty. Some flavors were familiar and some were nice new introductions. Very good Tex-Mex with good service. It's not the best Tex-Mex I've ever had, but Houston sets a pretty high bar when it comes to Tex-Mex, and Sylvia's was very good. We had the beef fajitas, which were nice, juicy and flavorful. The flour tortillas were also very good and obviously homemade. And I also liked the complimentary chips and salsa that came out before the meal--the salsa was nice and warm. Overall, I like Sylvia's, but my favorites are still El Tiempo and Ninfa's. read more

If I could give it a lesser rating, I would. We decided to eat here after my granddaughters birthday party. We called ahead for 10 and said that we would be accommodated. It was around 4pm, so the restaurant was not busy, but Sylvia was having a private party on the other side of the restaurant. Once we got there more people that we knew showed up. They understood that they would not be allowed to join our party, as they would not move any tables around, so they asked if they could sit anywhere in the restaurant. Daniel at the door told them that they could not sit there because they knew us. We didn't understand this so we began to question him (by the way, we are all African-American-engineers, prosecutors, counselors, business owners and teachers). After much questioning, Daniel eventually said that "we would be disturbing talking to each other, and then we would all ask for separate checks!!!!!!!!" How insulting!!!!!! I was covering the tab!!!! How racist this was!!! When we stated that this was totally unacceptable there was NO remorse or apology. He shrugged his shoulders in a "oh well!" At that time, all 18 of us got up and left! We headed over to Cheescake factory in Memorial City, where ALL 18 of us were accommodated immediately. The check was well over a thousand dollars and we were happy to give it to the Cheesecake Factory!!!! In 2023, it is out of line and totally unacceptable to blatantly tell a customer what they will do and you've never met them!!!!! I will share this story with many people. read more

But our last visit I think probably was our last. $11+ for a small bowl of tortilla soup is just too much, especially when we can get a serving twice as large for less money at another restaurant. Two cheese enchiladas with refried beans and rice at $12 is $4 more than at a competing restaurant and the extremely small portions of refried beans and rice left us hungry. Great experience. First time visitor. Went for HRW menu, but I ended up getting the queso and chicken tacos. Partner got the HRW menu with ceviche, carne asada, and chocolate ice cream. His meat was prepared just right and was a great cut of meat. My tacos were delicious. And Sylvia herself came by and checked on us.
