This is a handful of breakfast spots I frequent, for good reason. The food is wonderful and their bread and bacon is immaculate! I haven't mixed it up and tried much on the menu, but can imagine you can't go wrong as I've had friends and family confirm how much they enjoy the food here. I am a sucker for customer service and I absolutely cherish the staff! They remember me when I return, they're very friendly, accommodating and have very charismatic personalities. Our first time at this location...have been to the downtown location several times over the years. [[HIGHLIGHT]]As we walked in, we were told to find our own seats. After looking around (they weren't busy at this moment), we choose a table closer over to the kitchen and their view window. I always love sitting near the chef's watching them prep and cook[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. They have a daily special and today was my favorite, eggs benedict. I actually waivered back and forth between this and their pork chop and eggs but ultimately went with the server choice of the benedict. You don't get a dedicated server, they are roaming and everything is there to help and support you, keep drinks coming, serving, etc. Wife choose The Hog & Chick, their version of a basic eggs/bacon or sausage, and toast breakfast. She didn't specify which potatoes and it came with your classic shredded hash browns which was cooked well, crispy on the outside and tender and soft in the center. She asked for the sausage patties, which had a slight kick to them. The dish comes with a slice of their thick sourdough toast and that most delicious home-made strawberry jam. A wonderful, tasty dish! I want to get back to my breakfast...I specifically asked for the home fries and what a disappointment. Yes, I probably could have sent them back but didn't. My biggest issue...they were so, so greasy. I loved the caramelized onions and the bits of rosemary but overall, just way to greasy for me. I did like their hollandaise sauce, although it also needed more lemon flavor. I had the poached eggs and they were cooked to perfection. Ok and lastly, I just want to say that I was a bit concerned with some of the hygiene I witnessed while sitting and watching both the server's area and the chefs in the kitchen. Had an environmental specialist been present, there most likely would have been some writing up. Things like...new server enters space, places both of her cups on the counter, punches in, pulls her hair back into a ponytail, moves her cups off to the side and goes to work. No handwashing observed. In the kitchen I watched a couple of servers and chefs touch hair, face, pull up pants, etc. and continue to cut, chop, serve. Bare hands observed while prepping including a pulling up of pants, the push back of the side hairs and then reaching over, peeling and slicing a banana and putting the pieces bare-handed into a bowl for serving. When you are in the moment, these actions happen without realizing it but as a customer watching...not Kosher. Matt's Big Breakfast is one of my absolute favorite breakfast spots. Honestly, I would go just for their coffee and hash browns alone. They by far have the best coffee--smooth, rich, and always perfect. At first glance, the hash browns don't look very appetizing, but wow... they are so, so good. Perfectly crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. Once you try them, you're hooked. The service is always fast and super friendly, which makes the experience even better. As you will see from the photo, the plate was straining to hold it all, accompanied by a thick piece of rye toast. Eggs were cooked perfectly! Everything was served hot and in a timely manner. I've heard good things about this place and was finally in the area to check it out! It was a Saturday morning around 10a, and it was busy, but we didn't have to wait more than 5 minutes for a seat. 08/31/2025 It's hard to believe I had never been to MBB until now. I met up with a friend here for brunch on a Sunday at around 10:30am. They were busy, but the staff moved quick and a two-seat table was available within a few minutes. I went with "The Basics" ($12.29) - two eggs any style, choice of potatoes (home fries or hash browns), and toast with homemade preserves. My friend got "The Hog & Chick" ($14.49) which is The Basics plus choice of bacon or sausage. She insisted that I try the bacon, and it was so good, cooked perfectly and crispy. My over easy eggs and home fries were delicious. The sourdough was thick, toasted, and tasty. I like that they cook with only the good stuff - real butter and extra virgin olive oil. We've been to Matt's Big Breakfast in Gilbert many times and it's quite frankly hit or miss. Having gone to their original location in Phoenix for years prior to the Gilbert location opening, we've noticed a lot of inconveniences here. Matt's is obviously a very popular spot, especially on the weekends. During the more popular brunch hours, there's usually an hour-ish wait; they do have outdoor seating for cooler months, which is nice. We've had quite a few items from their menu. I've liked the waffle and griddle cakes the most. If you're looking for something more spicy, their breakfast burrito is good. The reason for 3 stars is because there have been times the eggs were dry/overcooked, same with the potatoes where they crisped too much, burnt bread, and so on. Other times everything has been perfect. We used to go here more often previously, but it isn't our favorite anymore. Also not a fan of the wait, given that the food may not be worth it. read more

I've met Matt and his wife driving around the area a few times and he's a down-to-Earth guy who cares about his food. Hog & Chick or the breakfast sandwich is our go-to when we're there. Thick-cut bacon is like eating candy. Waiter-service is one of those places where every waiter is your waiter--I've seen restaurants do it and this place is a little hectic because of that, but not a huge issue. Was in the area and decided to stop in and give it a try. There was no wait time for a table of two on Veterans Day the other Monday. The place is small, mom and pop feel. The menu is rather small which surprised me, but I guess it's better to be good at a few things than mediocre at a lot. You don't have a designated server, rather it's a team approach. So one person could take your drink order and another your food order, etc. The food came out quick. If you didn't know, the burrito is smothered. The hog and chick was pretty basic. The potato however are well seasoned and herbaceous. VERY oily though (which tends to be a theme here). The bacon was peppered and honestly it wasn't my favorite; but not bad. My boyfriend enjoyed the burrito, it was a substantial size. I liked the bean inside but that's all that really stood out to me. The prices seemed a little high to me, but this restaurant does use quality ingredients and local ones at that. It was an average breakfast place, nothing to write home about. Dropped in for a late breakfast (10:30), got seated right away (tables available inside and outside, in the shade). Our waiter was courteous and answered a few questions, made a couple of recommendations and took our order and our meals delivered soon after. On Monday their special is Huevos Rancheros & it was delicious. Very flavorful and the salsa verde had just the right heat. We also had the Chick & Pig (2 eggs, sausage patties, crispy hash browns and sourdough toast with housemade blueberry preserves. All of it was amazing - even the coffee! Alot of the items they have on their menu are sourced locally. Their prices are probably a little higher (but not crazy) than some other breakfast places, but their quality is significantly better. And I'm also familiar with the POS system they use so I know splitting the check is something very simple.. otherwise the food was ok not as good as the original location grandpas toast was almost burnt, but the ORANGE JUICE WAS THE BEST IVE EVER HAD. Cooking is done with only real butter and olive oil. They also resource everything locally. We ordered the following: Grains, greens, & beans $13.49 x2 Short stack griddlecakes (2) $8.99 Side of avocado Side of tomatoes My husband and I both ordered the Grains, Greens, & Beans for our main entree. The bowl features farro, sautéed baby spinach, heirloom Anasazi beans topped with two poached eggs, crushed herbs, and pink Himalayan sea salt. You have the option to add mushrooms for $2.25, which we did. The bowl was hearty and tasty. The side of avocado and tomatoes were great additions to the bowl. This was my 2nd visit to this location. I understood its Father's Day and the wait time would be a little longer. What happened I did not expect. We were sat in a corner waitress brought us water asked if we wanted any other drink, we declined and that was the last we saw of her until 35+mins. 2 tables sat after us, one right next to us had their order taken. Still no server. Mgr saw us looking around took our order and you'd think our food would be out 15-20mins later. WRONG! No one ever came to our table to ask if everything was ok, give us an update, nothing. The table next to us a waiter came a couple times to let them know there was a little delay with the kitchen. They got their food, other table finished and left. I then got up went to the counter to ask if someone can check on our order. The mgr who took our order came by and said ohh because you ordered steak n eggs (spec of day) that's why it's taking so long. SURE! Our waitress appeared a few mins after that "you guys haven't gotten your order?" We told her someone is checking. I ordered blueberry griddle cakes .... Regular griddle cakes /warm were delivered. They did bring the correct griddlecakes. This terrible service doesn't fall on the 2 people we spoke to but the entire staff. They claim they all work together. Didn't appear to be the case today. With that in mind, we made a point of going to the one closest to our hotel. We went for a late breakfast on a weekday. A server came to our table in short order. Of course, I chose the blueberry pancakes and a glass of lemonade. My husband ordered scrambled eggs with sausages and hash browns plus a cup of coffee. This dish also comes with some toast. The service here is slow. Oddly enough, all the diners we noticed were unfazed by this. What that tells me is that they like the food so much that they're willing to wait for however long it takes. When the food finally came, we were eager to dig in. Each order of pancakes comes with three of them. These were awesome pancakes. They are thick, moist and fluffy. The amount of fresh blueberries is very generous. I spread the butter around and poured some syrup on them. This was a surprisingly filling meal. Much as I enjoyed it, I just couldn't eat it all. I let our server know that I did like the pancakes but I was full! My husband liked his breakfast. The only thing he thought needed work was the hash brown potatoes. He said they were on the dry side. Otherwise, he gladly ate it all. We would definitely go to Matt's again next time we're in town. Good spot to catch breakfast with my friends after a walk in nearby Gilbert park. This restaurant sits situated in a new community with apartments, bars, shopping and more. We were able to be seated immediately. The daily special looked so good we had ordered two. My friend ordered her Friday Scramble with egg whites and I got my with 3 whole eggs. The dish was good but mine lacked peppers. I only had 2 red peppers in my whole dish meanwhile my friends dish has so many red peppers. The home fries were super tasty and chalked with rosemary. My othet friend got the skinny omelet which came with a great salad (too much argula for me). All in all a good breakfast. The coffee was plentiful and hot. The pancakes were disappointing.
