I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet! Been coming here, typically for the lunch buffet, for the past 10 years! The lunch buffet if offered Monday-Friday 11:30am-2pm and there's also a Sunday brunch. When someone says Chinese buffet, you think of those Old Country Buffet like restaurants with toxic orange sweet and sour pork and dirty icecream dispensers, right? Well think again! This is a clean, and simply decorated Cantonese restaurant. The food is simple, flavorful and not intimidating. My favorite is their thin noodles with pork with a side of Szechwan string beans (have to figure out this recipe!) They now have a take out location in the strip mall off of North Avenue and Kirk in case you don't have the time to sit down. read more

We love both dine in and carry out from Szechwan. Unexpectedly, the Mu Shoo veggies are my favorite dish (they have plenty of great vegetarian choices). We love the nice spot in downtown in a historic building with a nice view of town. The employees are also super nice. We happened upon this gem while looking for a place to eat before a show at the Arcada Theater (we did not have a reservation but did not have to wait). Cool retro look in the decor reminiscent of the old chinese restaurants from the 70s. However, this place seemed newly updated and very clean. Regarding the food, we started with the egg rolls and my son said they were the best he has ever had (and he has had a lot!). The entrees were creative and extremely flavorful as well. We were very impressed and so thankful that we found this place. We will be regulars from now on even when we are not going to the Arcada. read more

Well, I read the yelps before we went, and I wasn't expecting much. But, it was really good! We had the Sunday lunch buffet for 12.99 It came with hot sour soup or egg drop, both good. The buffet had most of the popular choices like sweet and sour chicken, stir frys, egg rolls (homemade loveliness...) and a very nice fried rice with short grain Japanese rice and not starchy or sticky at all. The biggest treat were the dumplings. They had pan fried on the buffet, and we mentioned we preferred steamed, and they brought us a plate full of freshly made steamed dumplings. really, about the best I've had... Lunch buffet here is around 11$. This is a very cozy looking restaurant and everything feels so clean and crisp. This isn't your usual Chinese buffet that has about 30 different options. There are just a few dishes, maybe between 8-12 different items but they are all made really well. I liked the atmosphere a lot. I left feeling not as weighed down as I usually do after eating from a buffet. The food was tasty but some of the dishes were empty when we went and they were a little slow with filling them back up. Stoped for pick-up on our way home. Didnt get a chance to study the menu since I was driving (not advised) I had bookmarked on yelp at one time. Cute little place, would like to dine-in sometime. We got Orange Chicken, Kung Pow and "Egg Rolls" and Crab Rangoon. Let's start with the egg rolls that to me are spring rooms, The thin flaky wrappers, they were good, well filled but not egg rolls to me. Not that their is anything wrong with that. The Crab Rangoon was excellent and unique, big craggy puffed and crispy. Lots of filling that didn't taste like straight up cream cheese. The mains were also good we got Medium spicy and it had a mild kick.. next time I'd do full spicy. The orange chicken had large maybe too large chunks of Chicken. Many pieces had to be cut to eat. Nice pieces of real orange peel. It's not Panda Express that's for sure. The king pow was also good lots of peanuts . Didn't blow me away but to be fair I would expect it too with what we ordered, we'll be back for sure. read more

My kids wanted Chinese food at 8:00 on Sunday night, we ordered and picked up our food by their closing time of 8:30. It was packaged and waiting for a contact free pickup at 8:25. We got, vegetable fried rice, vegetable lo-mein, Kung pao chicken, orange chicken, and their crab "rangoons". It called something else on the menu. The vegetable fired rice was excellent-filled with perfectly cooked fresh veggies...same with the veggie lo mein. King pao chicken was good, moderately spicy. Food and service was good but the BEST part of this hidden gem is the outdoor patio that overlooks the courtyard of the Steel Beam Theatre and Pueblo Restaurant. Very nice decor. Friendly staff. The food was very good. My husband and I started off with potstickers, they were a good size (6 to an order) and flavorful. The ginger soy sauce that accompanies it was delicious. For our entrees, I ordered the kung bao chicken & shrimp the chicken was tender and the shrimp was cooked perfectly. It was a spicy dish but a good spicy. Not the kind of spicy that obliterates your taste buds at the first bite. My husband ordered the Mongolian Triple, which comes with beef, shrimp and chicken and stir-fried with onions and has crispy noodles alongside. It was also spicy but again, a good spicy. The onions give it a nice sweetness. I loved that both dishes were executed perfectly. The meats were cooked correctly, the beef and chicken were tender and the shrimp cooked just right. The dishes are served family style so they give you a bowl of white rice and both dishes came with a nice cabbage/carrot slaw. It's sweet and vinegary and helps balance the whole meal. Still great food, even to go! I ordered via Yelp and the estimated time was like 40 minutes. I called to check and it was ready like 10 min after I ordered! Food was still hot, contactless pickup on a table outside the restaurant. Great experience. Next time just need silverware as we were eating out side and they forgot to give us any. UPDATE: Their customer service is impeccable. They offered us a second chance to try the food. We took them up on that offer. We tried the empress chicken again and the King Bao chicken. Both were WAY better than last time. The sauce was excellent. I was too nervous to try sweet and sour chicken again. I'm just a little hesitant to make this restaurant our new place. First time dining- ordered take out. The good: Mongolian Beef, Combination Fried Rice and Egg rolls- all excellent! I would order again. The bad: Egg Drop Soup- super bland- needs a little somethin. I love Szechwan! I have been going since I was a kid and even learned how to use chopsticks in the restaurant. This might mean I have sentimental attachment to the restaurant. Ok so this genre of food seems to have a bad wrap. Not sure what the other yelpers experienced but we had a fantastic dinner here last night. From the moment we walked in thewait staff was kind and generous. We were seated immediately and had an excellent view of downtown St. Charles. The place is immaculate on the inside, very classy. We were there for dinner, so the buffet was closed. Would be very interested in trying the lunch buffet sometime. I had the spicy garlic shrimp and vegetables. Which was divine! My husband and kids shared the honey chicken, The sesame chicken, and chicken delight. We did not have any leftovers!!! Food was probably the most fresh Chinese-type food I've ever had. We forgot to order eggrolls so after she had already put in our dinner order we had them add eggrolls onto our order and they managed it so they came out before the meal! The eggrolls were fresh made. No, I don't mean those premade things that are freshly deep-fried. I mean, when we ordered veggie eggrolls they took the vegetables, wrapped them in the wonton wraps and then deep-fried them. I have attached a picture. I have never been to a place that does this, and it was amazing! My outlook on eggrolls is now forever changed. Not to mention a lot of times when I eat at this genre restaurant I get migraines later, maybe MSG maybe salt, who knows I also usually gain a few pounds in water retention the next day. Excellent Mongolian Beef and Hot and Sour soup. Everyone in our group loved the food , truly the best around.

The Sesame chicken and crab rangoon were amazing. Upscale but very reasonable priced. Great location near the water and shopping. Large dining area and fun bar off to the side. Nancy suggested a Mai Tai, which was somehow perfect as I watched snow fall outside in what seemed like the 100th straight day of freezing temps in the Chicagoland area. read more

My family decided to try a new place for takeout Chinese food and we are glad we did! The menu options were what you'd expect and the pricing was average. We found a promo code for a free $6 appetizer, which was nice. The food was hot and waiting for us when we arrived to pick it up. Upon opening our containers, we could tell right away that all of the entrees were fresh and cooked to perfection. This second floor restaurant just recently reopened due to a huge renovation that took well over a year to complete. New kitchen, new updated decor, and elevator if you can't handle the staircase. White table cloths, cloth napkins, simple but elegant decor differentiate this restaurant from your regular hole in the wall Chinese carry out. The food remains excellent and was worth the long wait for reopening. Szechwan String beans - delicious, to die for. Sesame chicken is a dish not be missed. Governor's Prawns are fabulous. The Chef Special- Steam fish is tender flounder that is served with delicate tendrils of ginger that are not overpowering and strands of spring onion in a light savory sauce resulting in a tantalizing taste experience. Large scallops and prawns are served in dishes that do not overpower the delicate flavor of the seafood. No skimping in quality there. Szechwan's sauces are varied, specific to each dish and delicious. Dinner service was excellent. Very attentive wait staff. Drinks, rice serving bowls refilled. Bill delivered in a timely fashion - not too early not too late. The ambiance is not so upscale as to exclude family dining however, the dishes definitely fit those qualifications. My fiance and I went to the Szechwan following its grand re-opening, and were impressed with the changes the restaurant has made in terms of decor. The restaurant has a clean look, with a modern yet casual feel. There are numerous tables next to the windows that afford a view of downtown St. Charles, and the restaurant fills those tables first, which is appreciated. The staff was polite and willing to accommodate - when my meal arrived without chicken, which I had requested, the waitress not only replaced the entree, but took it off the bill as well. We did have to ask several times for refills on our drinks, but the waitresses apologies and friendliness slightly made up for the inattentiveness. Where the Szechwan fails, however, is in the quality of the food, which unfortunately, is just like every other take-out Chinese restaurant in town. The chicken is rubbery and thin, the vegetables are smothered in sauce, and the pot stickers are soaked in oil (i.e. grease). It was disappointing, to say the least. While the restaurant itself may have gotten a makeover, the food did not, and that's a shame. read more

Utterly forgettable experience. The room is fine and well lit being on 2nd floor. It seemed that they were doing this for the first time. A very pleasant waitress brought us bland mixed vegetables without the chicken we asked for. Kung Pao chicken was in the usual insipid brown sauce that seems to be used for most dishes, but with the addition of chilies and peanuts, so it was not at all refined or fresh. The hot and sour soup was fine. Bill with 4 beers was $53. 1970's style food is fine if you want it, but it would cost you $15 at an average take-out in the city and this wasn't worth it. I got chicken fried rice, i think i was eating white rice the whole time, the rice was so bland and there wasn't anything but rice and chicken. don't they add vegetables to fried rice ? i can vouch that they had huge pieces of chicken in the rice.
