I've passed by this restaurant for a while now and decided to check it out online. I saw that they have a lunch buffet and I love lunch buffets. So I was really excited to try it since I love Szechwan food. What a dissappointment. The only positive I can say is the restaurant is absolutely beautiful with its dark cherry wood and decor. The waiter was very attentive which I love. I drink tons of water and he kept my glass filled. (The only pet peeve: I wish he would have asked if I wanted lemon in my water, which I dislike. So I had to dig out all the lemon pieces). The only food item I enjoyed were the chicken wings. It at least had some flavor to it. Everything was extremely disappointing. Salt, salt and more salt. No flavor to any of the foods. I love hot and sour soup. There was nothing hot or sour about it. I've never seen hot and sour soup that was white. Sad to say nothing "Szechwan" authentic about this restaurant. I could have save $4.00 and gas and went to my local neighborhood dive for better food. read more

There are no good Chinese restaurants in my hood (Rogers Park) so I had to go all the way to St. Charles to find one! Not really. Dad's fathers day choice was closed so we ended up here and I'm glad we did! The prices are decent. The portions are large enough for leftovers and the food is delicious! I could smell the garlic as the food was coming to the table and I knew I was in for a treat. I got the Scechwan Beef. The sauce wasnt overwhelming and salty. All the flavors of the veggies and beef came through. I wasnt hungry two hours later and I wasnt thirsty! We got an order of fried rice for the table. I live in San Francisco so I eat fairly good Asian food. This was very bad. The major issue was lack of flavor. All of the five dishes were so bland. The string beans were over cooked a dry. The orange beef was the same. They could easily improve with some education on traditional spices. read more

This is a second story restaurant in an old building. It's a basic Chinese restaurant with no decor to speak of. The drinks are good. Try the Mai Tai. That where the excitement ends. My husband and I visited on a Friday evening for dinner and we ordered egg rolls, sweet & sour chicken as well as garlic chicken. The egg rolls were more like spring rolls that were deep fried. Very unexciting, especially if you've had Gen Hoe's in Geneva. The main dishes were fresh and flavorful but the garlic chicken I was eating contained a metal shaving possibly from a can. It really put me off (obviously) and we were done from there. The staff was apologetic and concerned and took the 1 item off the bill however, we don't plan to return. read more

Hadn't eaten there is many, many years. Ordered takeout. Got there early for pick up and had a drink at the bar. Gal who served me was very pleasant even tried to get the Rose Bowl on for me. They don't have ESPN (really??). Anyway she was very accommodating and even gave me an spring roll to go with my drink! Nice touch! We have been coming to and ordering from here since I was very young and it will always be my favorite Chinese restaurant! We had some bad experiences a few years back with the food and have seldom come back since then but I personally have always loved it! My favorite dish has been and always will be the chicken fried rice. NO other restaurant has come close to making it the same way and it's always a let down. I'd like to start by saying that I'm definitely not an expert in Chinese, or any other type of,cuisine. That said, I am a fan of Szechwan Restaurant in St. Charles. I've tried a few of their dinner entrees like Beef with Pea Pods, Sweet & Sour Chicken, Orange Chicken and Black Pepper Shrimp at separate times, and all of those were above average to my taste and experience with similar dishes at other Chinese restaurants. I'm very impressed with the quality of proteins that they use. The shrimp were all very nicely sized, probably in the 26/30 per pound range (extra large.) The beef was very tender, and if I had to guess I'd say it's from a sirloin cut, but I don't know, it was definitely higher quality cut than most Chinese places. Lastly, the chicken was high quality all white meat, with no gristle of weird parts hidden under the breading. I haven't tried any of their seafood besides the shrimp, so I don't have an opinion regarding those offerings. My go-to dish here though is the house fried rice. This comes with unbreaded chicken, beef and shrimp blended in with the rice. They also use a good amount of scrambled eggs in with the rice, which I'm a fan of. They use a good amount of the three meats too, so almost every bite gets you a piece of meat. I'm docking one star for 2 reasons. #1. The prices are a little high for the amount of food you get. The quality of the food almost makes up for the small portions, but not quite. #2. I almost always ask for Szechwan peppers (the dry, red pepper pods with seeds inside) to be stir-fried in with my fried rice. I'd say about 40% of the time, these are not included, which is a real bummer since they add an amazing dimension to the fried rice. Also, they seem to be scared of making food extra spicy when I ask for it to be. However, this seems to be the case at nearly all Chinese joints, so I don't think it's something worth deducting for here. Overall, this is a welcome addition to my roster of St. Charles eateries. I encourage anyone on the fence about trying this place out to go ahead and make an order. Order your go-to Chinese dish from here, and I can let you know that the ingredients will almost certainly be better than what you're used to - there just won't be as much of them. read more

I can't believe I haven't written a review for this place yet! I absolutely LOVE eating here. The food is always fresh, hot, and unlike many other Chinese restaurants, never has grisly/fatty meat. The service is always amazing and everyone is extremely kind. You HAVE to get their crab meat wontons. They are easily the best I've ever had, and they're huge. The only thing that I dislike is the location. It's hard to find and the parking is odd. But it's clean! read more

I can't recommend a better Chinese restaurant in the area. I have been eating here for twenty years and after living in China the past three years, I am still a big fan of the variety of tastes I find here - all extremely delicious. They only recently reopened with an all new, more modern decor after the building closed for renovation for over a year. Most of all, my guests and I always appreciate how personable and dedicated Nancy, the owner is. She and her staff even excel at concocting GLUTEN FREE specialties for those with allergies. This was my first/last time going there after trying the lunch buffet ( I THINK NOT!!!! ) the food in the pan looked like it was sitting there forever!!! I tried the green beans that looked kinda good and this beef dish w/ slivered onions looked fresh saw the waitress take fresh lo mein noodles and dump it in the pan that was on the buffet with dry gravy in it and after she did that she proceeded to scrap out the old stuff OMG!!!! are you kidding!!! The egg drop soup I had better, the place was very lovely but I guess you want it to look nice but skimp on keeping your food fresh. Chinese food is not usually my first choice as a meal, but for this restaurant, I had to write a review. We were out for my daughter's birthday and she chose Chinese. I had remembered this place, as we used to go there all the time when my kids were younger. They have remodeled, and the new decor looks great! The food was good. The service was excellent. The owner (Nancy) actually remembered us! They had a quartet playing softly, high school kids, but they did a great job, and it was nice to have live music...they even played 'Happy Birthday' for my daughter. I don't think I tried Szechwan until I started dating my boyfriend, because my family always went to Gen Hoe. Now I live really close to Szechwan though, so if we're in the mood for Chinese food it's most likely going to be from there (although I haven't abandoned Gen Hoe because that place is great!) We usually get carryout, although we did eat in once. It's good food and we always order a lot because we like to have a variety, and it's still good leftover of course. I think our usual order includes vegetable lo mein noodles, two kinds of chicken (like Sesame and something else), crab meat won tons and sometimes egg rolls. I'm sure you could eat here for under $10 if you only got one thing, but we always spend $15-20 each since we get so much! The food is high quality and never leaves us disappointed. My fiance an I have only lived in the area for a short time and most delivery restaurants have been unimpressive to say the least. While Szechwan may not have anything too out of the ordinary to offer in regards to their menu, what they do have is great. Saw the three star rating but figured we'd give them a shot as we're new to St. Charles. Ordered broccoli beef, mongolian beef and egg rolls. On the positive side, they delivered rather quickly, however, that didn't help out the meal. We found both portions to be very small for the $13 cost. Obviously, with a small serving size, you get less ingredients but the amount of beef in each was less than impressive. Half of the broccoli was inedible as they were almost raw. The mongolian beef not only lacked spice but it really lacked flavor in general. Being the first time we ordered from them, I wasn't sure if its standard procedure to have 1 container of rice for every 2 entrees but thats what we got. We just came from having lunch. We had the buffet which ran us $90 for three adults, an eleven year old, a 2 year old and an 11 month old. They charged 13.95 for the 11 yo and 7.00 for the 2 year old child (who we picked up nuggets for). They then had the audacity to tack on a 13.00 charge for a table of 6 or more, even though 2 were in high chairs. I was amazed at an 18% 'tip' added on for a buffet. We ordered a glass of milk for the baby, they ran out of milk a few days ago. I asked what kind of juice they have (full bar here) and was told they don't have any juice. The waiter asked what kind of soup we wanted, but never delivered. Nor did we see him after asking about the milk/juice. The service was horrid. That being said, the food was fine. As a previous poster said, you have to ask for food to be refilled as there's a lot of empty dishes sitting there. I will never, ever eat here again and highly recommend no one does strictly due to the obvious ripping off of their customers. read more

Great pork fried rice..the best I've ever had. Shrimp w lobster sauce was just ok. Crab rangoon I thought might be real good because of the price but its just crab flavored cream cheese.
