The food here was great however the service was surely lacking. Ordered and had to remind the server to bring our drinks. When we got our food to cook I expected that they would have bowls we could eat from as the other patrons, thought they would bring them in a while-no luck. We had to ask them for bowls to eat. Food: Meat was lil pricy but understandable bc it was a good amount of meat plus good cuts. I got the miso broth and I felt that there could have been a little more flavor. Had to make it up with the ponzu sauce and meat. Service/Atmosphere: Service was great! Waiter was very attentive and helpful with suggestions! I was happy to see them asking customers if it was their first time and suggestions just bc there arent really any shabu places(that i know of) in thousand oaks. Set up was interesting, it's set up in a u shaped bar, downside was that i felt a little far away from my pot but it's not the biggest issue. I moved to Thousand Oaks from the Bay Area about a year and a half ago. When I saw "Coming Soon" at the window of this place, it was probably one of the best things I've seen in Thousand Oaks. Tabu Shabu finally had their soft opening. If you refer to previous comments, they mention that Tabu Shabu let them know it was their soft opening and they weren't prepared for the turnout. Well, they told us the same thing....DAYS later... I would think at this point they'd recognize that their place is the one and only and it's popular. It's not set up well, like everyone mentions, it's a U shape, which means the only party size that works here is a party of 2. If you're just by yourself, they'll move you around (which I witnessed), and if you were like us, a party of 4 you wait. For us, they sat us down when it was just the 2 of us, we ordered food; then we were told that they'd prefer if all our party was here for us to sit. So by our own choice, we got back up to wait for our party to arrive. What I thought would happen is that when they came up to us and we would tell them that the rest of our party is walking into the restaurant, they'd let us sit....but they didn't. At that point we had waited for more than 30 minutes. An hour later (30 minutes more of waiting after the rest of our party arrived) we sat down. I believe it was one of the owners, she wasn't very happy with us, and kept telling us "the food was worth the wait!" It wasn't.... It's EXTREMELY expensive for the portion and what it is. For example, my friend only ordered vegetables and it was $14... The broth bowl is a bit strange and very hard to grab things from. The sesame sauce is watered down. The vegetables consists of mostly spinach. I got one shittake mushroom and on regular mushroom cut in half. We also ordered the salt and truffle edamame and garlic edamame. They both went untouched by 4 people...in short, they weren't cooked and the taste was off. I don't think I've ever taken edamame left over home, but we did at this place cuz the waitress said it was too good to throw away... Tabu Shabu comped us our first round of drinks and mochi for the inconvenience, we appreciated that. If we ever extremely crave hot pot we'd come back here because we live close and it's really the only one in the area. But definitely not with more people or as individuals. read more

I'm just going to say it...Tabu Shabu is now my favorite restaurant in the Conejo Valley. The food is fresh and delicious and the experience is amazing. We've been to this restaurant 3 times now and we can't wait for our next meal here. You get your choice of broth to cook a great selection fresh meats, poultry, seafood, noodles and veggies. It's so healthy and yummy...plus we've seen many young kids enjoying the food so it's very kid friendly. My one reluctance here is that so many people will learn about Tabu Shabu that it'll be impossible to get a table but I'm willing to take this chance. Was very disappointed in the venue, service and the food was just ok. First, the venue. There are no individual tables. Everyone is seated at the bar and there is really hardly any room between you and the person next to you. Additionally, the induction plate where they put the bowl is far away from where you're seated making it pretty difficult to make/see your food. Second, service. I saw some people receive good service. But we did not. We asked about the porridge 5x and was ignored and no follow up. We finally asked for the check as we were tired of waiting for our waiter to come to us for over 1/2 hour. This was consistent with other reviews that indicated they had bad/spotty service and were ignored. Thirdly, food. The quality of the meat was decent and so were the vegetables. However, the amount of meat was scarce for the price and the sauce (spicy miso) was not good. The very bad service was enough for me to not ever want to come back. Tried this new spot with my family. The servers were friendly but the food portions are too small for the cost and isn't worth it. My family constantly makes hot pot at home and we could have fed 6-10 family members with the total amount we paid and for way less price. It seemed like hot pot for beginners at this spot. Finally, a cool new hotpot place in Ventura county! The staff here will happily walk you through all the menu options. I recommend the spicy miso soup base and the kale noodles. I love that they have chopped veggies on the side that you can add in the broth to really make it your own! And the ponzu and peanut dipping sauces are on point. The only thing I wish was that the burners could be closer to you..
