This place is one of those guilty pleasures where I know I shouldn't be eating it but I can't stop returning. They consistent with their Surf & Turf burritos and their rolled tacos. * Service - 99% of the time I get this to go so I really can't say much about the service. They're very friendly on the phone and they've only messed up on my order a twice out of probably a kabillion times. * Food - Consistent and very generous with the amount of food. They aren't the most traditional mexican restaurants but they're much better than their competitors. * Price - This is where I could say things could be better and more competitive. Especially their drinks. I can walk out just for myself and spend $20 at least on burrito and drink. Don't get me started if you're buying for more than 1 person. We were just there today and had their Al pastor, birria and tripas tacos and they were all nothing short of amazing. The tripa was perfectly cooked and the birria was very tender and lean. This place used to be the best in North County but it has fallen from grace. I asked for the lettuce and guac on the side and they charged me $2 for a "custom order". That's insane, it's literally the same thing just wanted the cold stuff not top so they'd make it home and I could reheat, nothing custom about it. The carne asada was grey, dry and flavorless. I love this place. First of all, the food is always amazing. They got the authentic al pastor rotating right up front for everyone to see. Matter fact, the entire kitchen is up front for everyone to see which tells you they're not hiding anything and they stick to health standards. The service is phenomenal. The girls they got working there are super attentive and kind. Last but not least, the ambiance is so fun. The selection here is endless! They have over 20 taco options, would they not be so expensive i would have loved to order about half of them. Prices range from $2 for a street taco with their regular meats which is fair to almost $6 for a fish or specialty taco which is just insane. My husband had the buffalo taco, generous in size and almost double the street tacos, but the meat was pretty chewy and dry. Al pastor roasted in the spit was perfection, i went with a torta which was ok, but had very little meat, basically just a ton of bread. Mulitas were tasty, salsa bar extensive and i loved both the grilled and pickled onions best, very well seasoned and great addition to our meal. Was craving street tacos today and it just happened to be Tuesday. I sought help in my plight via Yelp Talk and didn't quite get the help that I needed. So I just searched "Taco Tuesday" in the search bar above and came up with a variety of options including Taco Bar. I've passed by and wanted to visit previously. This was my chance! As I pulled up, I could see the place was crowded. Limited table space on a busy night for a small establishment, but they seemed to manage. It looked like most guests were pretty quick in and out. I managed to make my way to the cashier to order. There was a sign up front with the "Taco Tuesday" options. Quite a variety tonight including Pastor, Pollo, Carnitas, Birria, Veggie, Potato and Steak Ranchera. Each just $1.25! Load me up! I ordered 2 of the Pastor, Birria and Steak Ranchera. I thought 6 might just fill me up. The Steak Ranchera was chopped beef sauteed with tomato sauce and onions. Not too bad, but lacking in excitement. The Birria had shredded beef topped with cilantro and onions. The meat was a bit dry my taste, so I added some salsa to help it down. Not bad flavor though. Lastly the Pastor. This was the most exciting looking of the three variations that I ordered, because it was topped with guacamole, onions and cilantro and some pineapple chunks. Very colorful with some pretty decent flavors. After downing the six tacos, I was still hungry. Looked up at the menu to see what else I should sample. I ordered sides of rice and beans along with a pollo and a carnitas tacos. That should do the trick. When looking at the menu, I thought it said rice and beans. However, after closer inspection it was "or". Oh well. The more the merrier. So the second order came out and was somewhat similar to the first. The meats were a bit dry and over cooked. But nice flavors and colors to the plate. The carnitas came with shredded pork, diced onions and cilantro while the chicken was diced in pretty good sized chunks topped with onions, cilantro and guacamole. The rice was also lacking in flavor but the beans were ok. As mentioned in a previous review, the tortillas for Tuesday's specials are store bought while the ones for their regular menu items were handmade when ordered. It looked as if the meats for the taco specials were prepared and set up in hot pots on the line for quick production once ordered. I guess it works out for timing, but the meat suffers in the end. Overall a pretty good experience at Taco Bar. Tuesdays are very popular as evidenced by the standing room only at times. The line at the counter was pretty consistent while I was there as the "Taco Tuesday" special runs until 10 PM. They typically offer samples of their bean soup, but ran out earlier in the evening. A Tijuana Taco Bar that moved into higher class digs. I'm noticing more traditional Mexican places ( Mixteca and Que Torta for example) are starting to find their way into mainstream locations. Gone are the days where you could only find Mexican Ice Cream/ Water Shops buried deep within the ethnic communities. With commercial real estate imploding, rent is cheap. Taco Bar was the 2nd stop on my self inspired, with help from Yelp, San Marcos Taco Tour. Their ratings are super high, and for good reason! They seriously have the BEST tortillas in town! So light, so fluffy, so deliciously tender, they probably have zero calories (inserting a wishful thinking emoji here)! Their Cabeza street tacos are the BOMB! So this Taco Bar is located in a shopping mall, conveniently close to the freeway. Their menu is seriously huge. I like the fact that they do a bold and innovative range of tacos and burritos with varied fillings that you wouldn't normally find at your regular Mexican place. Where else can you get a Smoked Tuna, Spicy Octopus, and Azteca (beef & cactus) taco all on the same menu?! Service is awesome too. The couple of times I called in my take-out order it was ready when I drove up and the counter people were super friendly! If you want to dine in, you need to know that this place gets slammed on the weekends and there's only a limited number of tables. If you're sitting down, you'll have lots of people standing around your table waiting to place or pick up their order. Add to that, since it's located in a shopping mall, this Taco Bar location can have limited parking, especially during the holidays or on a Sunday, with all the spots in the lot filled. What's to improve? The Chipotle Sauce that they seem to put on everything is pretty spicy so if you don't like it hot, you may want to ask them to leave it out or to use tartar sauce instead. They even put the Chipotle Sauce on their Calamari Burrito which gives it a kick, but also leaves it rather dry. Perhaps a creamy type of sauce would be better? Also, the last time we were here, we ordered the Asada fries and, while the meat was great, the fries came out soggy and were a dark caramelized brown color which meant that the oil they were using was a little old. And, as some of the other Yelpers have mentioned, sometimes when this place is super busy, the meat and seafood gets a little overcooked or dry. Rarely can I find no fault with my dinner in a Mexican eaterie, but that is what happened tonight. My kid wanted tacos and since Taco Bar is super-close to our new home, we decided to give it a go. First off, this is a counter service place. You stand in line, pick your food, place your order and pay, and at given a number. There is a salsa bar and self-serve soda fountain to keep you busy while you wait. We sat front and center looking into the open kitchen. Everything is made fresh to order, even the tortillas! The Hubs had Carne Asada, I had a chili rellano burrito, and the Wee one got a taco bowl. After being disappointed the first time I came here I figured I'd give it another try. Arrived around 1pm and still crowded ordered pastor tacos and rolled tacos. When we were brought over our food it wasn't in to go containers and we had to remind her it was 'to go'. When they took it back I saw the chef pick up the tacos off the plate and put it in a to go container and scoop up the rest of the crumbs on the plate with his hand and put it on top of the tacos. That was pretty gross to watch, I hope his hands were clean. The pastor tacos were disappointing this time it was extremely spicy even without salsa, and the tortilla tasted like it was sitting out a while. I don't work close to taco bar but decided to make the drive for lunch. I ordered lunch for my office and when I got back we realized we were missing food that they charged us for. I called the restaurant and asked for the manager. I could hear him telling the employee to tell me that he wasn't in and to take a message. I called back 4 hours later and asked for the manager. Same thing he was in and told his employees to tell me he wasn't. I told the employee to let his manager know that I personally know he's there and to stop avoiding my calls. The manager immediately called me back and assured me that I would receive my money back and an office employee would personally call me to issue refund over the phone. UPDATE: Managers WIFE just called me and asked if I was the one "who left the yelp review" then refused to void my transaction or refund my money if I didn't go in person and show my ID. I told her she could do it over the phone and she confirmed that she could but in this case refused to do so. HORRIBLE customer service from management. I have been a loyal customer to the taco bar. I ate there tonight with my family. This was my first bad experience. The food was stale and rock hard. However, when I complained to the mamager/owner. His response was that he didn't want to hear it and not come back. I was kind, and since my family and I are regulars, I thought I could let the owner know of our bad experience. He said he doesn't care and doesn't care if loyal customers don't come back and he doesn't have time in his busy day to even speak to any customers. I returned to the "Taco Bar" today after a long hiatus, only to find that the handmade tortillas are no longer served, the salsa bar is gone, the quality of the meats is down, and the prices are up! I ordered Al Pastor, pollo, carnitas and cabeza tacos, and a Mexican Coke. Only the cabeza meat was moist, the others were dry. In the past, I said they were "okay", now I can't even say that, and definitely not worth my $25! read more
