I can't get enough of tacos since I moved west. I'd never known there were so many varieties for every component of a taco! Every place we tried had been better than the last. My obsession is through the roof! We loved the interesting combo of ingredients offered at Taco Bar. My husband went for their surf & turf and hot octopus while I opted for their Azteca (carne asada, cactus) and al pastor street taco. Out of the 4 - the best was hands down the surf & turf. It was the size of half a burrito. We loved its smokey flavor and the melted cheese. Azteca was also another winning choice - first time having cactus and the texture reminded me of eggplant - I love eggplants so worked well for me (not for my husband tho). Al pastor was classic done right. It was a bit smaller than the other three but still came in decent size. The hot octopus on the other hand was too spicy and did not have enough octopus! I would skip. Overall - wished we had a bigger stomach to sample more of the speciality tacos! Definitely would be back when in town again! read more

One of my favorite North County spots for pastor tacos. For some reason I never catch a bad line here and are always able to get in and get out. Park is best behind the store than in the front lot as it gets busy from other establishments in the center. Delicious salsa bar with lots of options including cucumbers, pickled onions and spicy (soft) carrots as well as all the regular green and red salsa you'd expect. There's a good menu, from tacos to burritos to tortas and plates. It's mainly a taco place, with a variety of meats and two vegetarian taco options. I ordered the potato taco and veggie taco. The veggie taco has beans/rice/lettuce/guac...and it was alright. The potato taco has potato/cheese and is fried...so it's a bit oily when it comes out. This is one of our go-to spots in San Marcos for 1 item - their Surf and Turf burrito! The sauce (kind of a chipotle, savory, spicy style) makes it nice and juicy and the meat and shrimp are always tender. You can honestly eat the burrito without any hot sauce but the red sauce that they give with it is so good too! It is spicy but still very flavorful and not too spicy that it ruins your palate. If you're also looking to be healthy, there is a Nektar next door. To get our veggies, my husband and I will get a smoothie or juice from there and split the Surf and Turf burrito. I walked in not expecting much. There's ample parking outside, and the inside is clean. I ordered 2 Asada Tacos, 1 Al Pastor Taco, and a side of rice. My boyfriend ordered the California Burrito. Both of us walked out happy and stuffed! The taco is generous in meat and flavor! Both meats were perfectly cooked. The taco size is bigger than most "street tacos." They have one tortilla instead of two, which I personally really liked because I felt full off protein, not the carbs. The rice was super yummy and a great compliment to the three tacos. My boyfriend's California Burrito craving was well satisfied and he said he liked it as well. They have a salsa bar stocked with various kinds, per usual, but I loved each of the salsas. Never had a problem until the new staff they've hired, I have a food allergy to cilantro and asked not to have it any of my tacos (only should've been on 2 out of 6 if they made them how their menu states) but they drowned every taco in it. Next time I went thought I'd just ask for everything on the side so there would be no confusion but charged me $2 for putting it on the side. Open, well lit,, busy, good food, pay first, lots of choices, no table service, fixings bar, etc. Strengths; housemade tortillas, grilled fish (get it) & unique specialty tacos, Freestyle drinks, salsa bar, carnitas, aribe Weaknesses; Pastor, Asada anything, chicken; all were good but dry and not as good as expected. Yummy everything here. Some of the items we tried are the surf and turf taco, pastor tacos, asada tacos and shrimp cocktail. Everything was devoured and tasted amazing. Their salsa's are all pretty hot but delicious, the pickled onions are bomb. Chips are fresh and yummy. My only complaint would be that they only give you two packets of saltine crackers with the cocktail. The ratio is way off. Also, I had to pay for the chips separately, I expected some chips or tostadas with the cocktail as well. This Taco Bar has the well, top shelf, and everything in between! Seriously, there's so many different choices that it's kind of overwhelming, but in the most delicious way possible. I ended up tasting a couple different options including buffalo, smoked tuna, grilled fish, and carne asada. Every one seemed to be more delicious than the previous. Super filling too. You get a great portion at an extremely reasonable price with these babies. Staff is really friendly and the food always comes out way quicker than I would expect for such quality Mexican food. This place used to be the very best. I hadn't been to Taco Bar since the one in Vista closed down. I've been craving it for so long. So I drove out to San Marcos only to find out half of their menu was completely gone, they no longer made aguas frescas, and they had no taco Tuesday options. They don't even make their own tortillas anymore, either. So their tacos are smaller but you pay the same prices as what they used to be with their bigger, homemade tortillas. Oh and another thing, they charge for the items on the salsa bar now. 50 cents for limes, another 50 cents for pickled onions, and for carrots, etc. It's really sad.
