Let's start with Great music on the patio. Then again I was there for SXSW so not sure of the talent pool any other time. The servers were very kind & attentive. I ordered chips & guac, fish taco, pastor taco & pollo taco. If you are gluten free or just prefer corn tortillas you have to ask for them because flour is the default. Fish was the best of my meal. Pollo was shredded & moist but I didn't like the lettuce & other toppings. Guess I'm more of a street taco gal. The pastor was a bit dry. Probably because the chunks were pretty big compared to what I have had elsewhere. The chips seemed to be straight from a bag & guac only had a few tomatoes & onion for flavor so......not very flavorful. A large portion however. I'll be back to check out their regular bands but may eat before I get there or I'll stick with the fish. read more

A really fun, cool, and funky place. The atmosphere is eclectic and the food is tasty. I had the migas and they were good. Could have used more onions and tomatoes. Refried beans were disappointing. No flavor and just bland. Potatoes were fine. Not stellar. The real let down was the lack of homemade tortillas. The husband had chilaquiles and he really liked them. His black beans were amazing!! Hands down the best thing I ate. Prices were low and the salsa bar had some great choices. Overall, it was good. I'd come back again and have a beer on the patio and try lunch. read more

Unlike everyone else, our experience with this restaurant was far from great. 6 ground beef tacos for $24.00. That's a bit pricey. The worst part though was all the grease in the bottom of the take out box. 1/4 inch of grease soaking into the shells. We couldn't pick the tacos up. The flavor was ok, but we've had better. Then the green sauce was also floating in oil, even when we tried stirring it, there was so much oil, that that's all we could taste. I tried reaching out to them via Facebook messenger, but they chose to ignore me. Customer service is lacking a bit. read more

I arrived at 12:50pm on a Thursday. The venue stands out and looks really weird, hencing belonging in Austin. There was a big outdoor area. The inside had a lot of photos and decorations. Lots of photos of Maria, the founder. I looked at the menu above and ordered and paid at the counter. This venue has a self serve vibe. I ordered the Cha cha tacos plate and a Jarritos. It was a crispy flat taco with beans, tomatoes, lettuce, pastor (ground beef), guacamole, and queso. $9.99. It was alright, nothing special. Mediocre at best. Dunno if I would stop here again unless I want cheap and quick mexican food. You get what you pay for. read more

You should be here on Sundays. The live music (in this case for Hurricane Harvey Relief), was lovely, funky and honestly something you'd be paying 15 bucks a head for on Red River. When the trumpet guy started running around the tables, using a plastic water cup as a filter for this instrument, well that was a very Austin moment. You should be here for tacos. No Bhudda bowls. Just home-made tortillas, corny flavor with enough floury strength to hold your meals. Some of the best in the city. Chorizo, nopales, migas with a stupid amount of cheese; go wild. You should be here for the salsa bar. A creamy orange Torchy-a-like. A creamy green Tacodeli-a-like and a solid red, plus cilantro, pickled onions and of course, their addictive chimichurri. I made the trek to Taco Express around 9am on a Saturday. I couldn't get over the number of people that were there eating breakfast tacos at that hour. My excuse was I had to be up to catch a plane.. I had a single Migas and it was delish! I wasn't sure what to expect, but for the un miga'd it is like a small omelette in a soft taco shell. One of the saddest things about leaving my old hood on Kinney Ave and becoming a Buda-bound suburbanite was not being able to get to Maria's in like two minutes. Because you will not find better breakfast tacos anywhere in Austin. The tacos al carbon are my favorite; tender pork with a semi-spicy red sauce and loads of fresh chopped cilantro and onion make this to die for. Couple it with a bacon, potato and cheese taco and a cafe mocha ($1.85!) and you've got the best breakfast in town. I'm happy to say that even in the spruced up location, Maria's has not lost its distinctive South Austin charm. There's more space, a bigger patio, a stage for live music, and Maria even has a boutique out front, built into an old CapMetro car. Fish tacos excellent flavor and the many sauces to choose from make it even better. When I'm Austin again I will get food from here. I forgot the decor. Makes it a very unique spot for sure. I've been coming here for years and I have only ever eaten the breakfast tacos. I haven't gone as often since they changed the look of their place but if someone said they want to go there-I wouldn't be against it. The thing is although they changed their overall quaint image they haven't changed the food-it's the same as it's always been. I love and dislike this-I like the same thing and the ordinary but I also get bored. So I end up going to Taco Deli or places that offer more topping choices. The place is still cute though so it's worth a pop in especially the outdoor area. read more

Maria's Taco Xpress on South Lamar changed my whole set of expectations on Mexican food. Pheonomenal tacos and atmosphere!!! Granted, I am from Seattle, where buena comida mexicana casi no existe. So I am not as seasoned/cultured as some of you Austin foodies with quality mexican food. But after visiting Taco Xpress on my second day in Austin, I was in heaven. Their breakfast migas were outstanding, a perfect blend of eggy cheesiness. I also recommend their tacos al pastor and their fish tacos, especially with fresh salsa from their salsa bar. In Seattle, quality tacos like these would set you back $5-6 apiece. At $2-3 in Austin, I was very impressed by how little I spent for such an amazing meal. Then came the margarita pitchers...Two of them...My partner and I each consumed probably 7-8 margaritas on their glorious sun deck, with misting fans cooling us off in the 100-degree heat. It was one of the happiest, most delightful afternoons either of us can remember. Noooo, I am NOT ashamed to say that we spent probably 5 hours that afternoon at the neighborhood taco joint! I've lived in Austin for 29 years and Taco Xpress remains my favorite breakfast taco spot in town. The food is served fresh and hot and is consistently high quality. The service is friendly and accommodating and the prices are good. Also love the funky vibe. Faves include the chorizo, egg and cheese taco and the breakfast gordita. But you can't go wrong with any of their tacos. There is better queso to be had around town, but I don't go there for queso. read more

What a yummy, authentic meal! The enchiladas were all freshly made- every ingredient. The guacamole was delish. The pastor was maybe a bit too fatty for some of us. Loved the retried beans. The barbacoa was tender, delicious, and soft. A squeeze of lime from the salsa bar was a perfect elevation to that dish. Three meals. Four people. Loads of leftovers. Simply amazed by several of the tacos and enchiladas. I swear by all things honest and good that these were the best tacos I've ever had. We tried the Picadillo, Pollo Guisada, and the Al Pastor. The picadillo was my favorite prob because it's the most different take on a ground beef taco adding potato and carrots. The pollo was fantastic a little spicy but not too hot. A little tongue burn after which was just right. The Al Pastor is also excellent, a nice blend of sweet. The cheese and chicken enchiladas were also very good. We went here for Gospel Brunch with our friends -- still can't believe the experience. Food: Love that this place is counter service-- we got here early and were able to get round one of food before the crowd arrived. Tacos were amazing. Warning: This place adheres to a (weird) rule that I don't quite understand when it comes to alcohol -- we ordered bloody Mary's, and we had to present our food to the "bartender" in order to be served, but the food had to be substantial enough and deemed "OK" to be paired with an alcoholic beverage. Example: Nachos wouldn't do it, but two tacos would. Kind of a pain but whatever-- we rolled with it. Entertainment: WOW. Just wow. I think the best word to describe it is "captivated". This is a very unique experience, and if you are debating on going to a gospel brunch--regardless of your religious affiliation or beliefs-- DO IT. Not the biggest fan! Coming from a salsa snob I feel there was something lacking in the taste of their salsas and food. I did enjoy their beans though they where great ! It's a cool little historic joint but make sure to pay attention to their hours ! My potato taco was super salty and lacked any flavor the "crispy" shells are store bought not homemade so be aware when choosing your shells. Maria's Taco Xpress is an Austin institution. This is the first time I've been institutionalized. Ha! There is a large patio outside and a limited amount of inside seating in a very eclectically decorated dining room. I like it, myself. Seating is a little cramped, but that's how you make new friends, right? I had the Al Plato (3 steak tacos topped with mozzarella cheese, avocado and special sauce), rice and beans. The steak was grilled nicely with a tasty chat on the outside. There was a healthy amount of meat in each taco and the toppings worked nicely. The rice and beans were average, but let's be honest, I ordered the plate for the tacos. Next time I will get the tacos in their own. But plates at other tables looked very good. The enormous statue of Loca Maria and her outstretched arms welcoming all to her establishment is, for me, an image that separates the men from the boys. The strong men understand it. Loca Maria's... was it ever even called this? I call it Loca Maria's because anyone who has been around for more than a couple years knows what I am talking about. This is her place. I met her years ago at the old establishment with the dirt floor. Remember that? Friendly, eager to smile, always speaking kindly to the people who were working at her restaurant... she was the friendly, quirky, beautiful business owner who loved Austin and live music and musicians with every meal. I love the cook who has been cooking breakfast tacos for the 15 years I have been eating here. I watch to see when he is cooking my order of dos migas tacos sin jalapenos and he usually looks around to say hi to me. I know he makes my breakfast with love in his heart. Five stars to Loca Maria for being a charismatic business owner who knew how to make it work especially when the tortilla chips were down. Five stars to the cook who creates my personal gold standard upon which all other Migas Breakfast Tacos are measured. Truth be told, once I discovered it, I have eaten nothing else here.
