I've only been here once, and I was appropriately wasted when I went, but from what I remember, the carne asada burrito I had was incredible. Probably one of the biggest, greasiest, most flavorful burritos I have had. I felt like I was going to die after I ate it, but it soaked up a lot of booze and helped to lessen the coming hangover. It took me awhile to understand the appeal place, but then after i saw that they do a good job at cooking up non-offal meats such as brisket and chicken, I understood why. I like to order their vegetarian tacos. I think it is the best, because they take the time to warn up the taco until the cheese melts, and everything is hot. I also love their salsas and especially the cucumber slices and cabbage they offer. It is also great that it is parked in Vons, because that means I could get Kombucha (when they have it!) and have it with my taco. Awesome. This is the best taco truck I've yet found ANYWHERE. You must take this with a grain of salt however, as I don't eat meat so I'm not really the taco truck's ideal customer. But Taco Zone is apparently gentrified enough (due to its Echo Park location most likely) that they know how to do "veggie" and "sin carne", unlike the trucks in my hood, where "sin carne" doesn't fit in their worldview. Hence, Taco Zone not only has veggie tacos and quesadillas, but they're quite superb. Add that to the fact that it's open really late and is really cheap (where else can you buy dinner with the change in your pocket in Echo Park or Silver Lake?), and you've got an institution. On wheels. Also, I have to add that the veggie tacos are great on their own, seared enough to melt the cheese and get kind of crispy; but what makes them really great is that you can customize them with the fantastic condiments bar on the side of the truck. My favorites are the pico de gallo, that green avocado salsa, and of course the onions and cilantro. So check this place out, especially if you're veg and have been feeling left out of this whole taco truck thing. I ended up at Burrito King and right when I was about to order a little hipster angel tapped me on the shoulder and told me to hit up Taco Zone. I ordered a chicken and chorizo taco and split a bean and cheese burrito with my friend. The tacos were good. I would suggest adding some white cheese or pickled cabbage to give it some flavor. Those of you who wonder why Carne Asada is Not a Crime have only to visit Taco Zone to become a convert. I visited a few weeks ago and what was supposed to be a quick homage to stuff white people like turned into a 7 taco gorge fest. The Suadero was delicious but admittedly after my fourth taco everything had the same satisfying, fatty-crispy savoriness. The fact that this is more of a taco trailer instead of a taco truck lends a bit more psychological comfort with regards to sanitation. And the big windows lend the nice women inside the feel of partaking in performance art. Now, can someone please recruit the guy who voices the "Auto Zone" commercial to do a PSA for Taco Zone? Wow, so disappointed last night. I've spent years eating at this truck when I lived in the neighborhood and it never let me down. Until last night. My husband and I have since moved and decided to take a drive and grab some tacos. We ordered carnitas and carne asada soft tacos, and the meat was so dry! As I took my second bite, it felt like I was biting into some burnt hard meat, but when I looked into the taco there was a two inch long piece of wood in it! There went my dinner. I got two tacos, beef and tongue, and one mulita al pastor. All of this was fantastic and I loved my first visit to the Taco Zone food truck. This was a simple operation offering tacos, burritos, and quesadillas (mulitas are like mini quesadillas). Each can be made with a variety of fillings including beef, pork, tripe, tongue, cheek, and more! This is a popular joint and lines can get very long and slow moving. What really makes this place matter is the salsa de guacamole. Its got cillantro, onions and verde blended to an extreme tastefulness thats even a bit frothy if you're there early enough.
