On our way to the Kabuki to see Prometheus a few weeks back, we stumbled upon TacoBar. The smells of carne asada and carnitas drew us in and we were warmly welcomed by the staff. Now, anyone who knows me, knows that I LOVE Mexican food. I was excited that we came upon this place but I wasn't so excited about the prices. For standard street tacos, we paid a pretty penny ($3.45/each), however the tacos were pretty good! Not great, but good. I had the carnitas tacos and the carnitas were juicy and tender, not dry at all. The boyfriend had some fish tacos, made with Mahi Mahi ($3.75/each), which were delicious! The tacos came with pinto beans and pico de gallo. I think if you're in the Pac Heights area, TacoBar is a solid spot to grab a quick bite. Coming from New York where they don't have the best Mexican food, I'm not a burrito snob. But I do like to eat and I like yummy things! So based on my own standards, these burritos are really good! Their carne asada is so tender and makes a tasty and filling burrito with the rice and beans. My favorite is their pescado! The fish has a nice soft crunch and is soft and flavorful on the inside. I probably wouldn't recommend their cameron burrito-- I tasted more cabbage slaw than the prawns so it was more like just a cabbage burrito. Not a huge fan of cabbage in general, but their cabbage slaw is okay, although tangier than I'd like it. Another problem I have is that the amount of guacamole that they give is really inconsistent-- the first time I received a generous spread of guac and the second time I could hardly taste it. I think they skimped on the beef the second time too :(. I'll assume it was an off day or I guess it depends on who prepares the food. Other than those issues, I really love how fresh and clean their ingredients taste. Food comes out fast and warm! Having to be at CPMC for visitations for a week, I walked down to Fillmore get dinner "to go" on during this time. Walked by and checked out the menu and decided to get a burrito at TacoBar at the corner of California and Fillmore. Placed my order for the carne asada burrito, which consisted of pinto beans, Mexicano rice and Pico de Gallo. No side of chips or salsa came with the order. As for the burrito, it had good flavor but a couple bites into it, I didn't taste the beef yet. This was a carne asada burrito that was short on the beef. I came here for lunch. As far as the style of food, it's Mexican with a California cuisine flare. I had a Torta sandwich with carne asada. The meat was slow roasted and moist. The toppings were really fresh. It was like a burrito in between bread. My husband became a fan of their fish tacos. They are more Baja style (aka deep fried) and a little bit different than what I've experienced in Mexico but good in their own way. Their chips and beans were very fresh. TacoBar was the perfect finishing touch to my San Francisco experience. I ordered a jicama salad and a pomegranate margarita. The salad was really creatively made, with grapefruit, jicama and avocados, and had the right balance of sweet and tang. The margarita was pretty, pink and oh-so-refreshing. I was very excited to try TacoBar. One topping that caught my attention was the duck confi and it did not disappoint. Unfortunately, every other topping did. My favorite is carnitas and their's was surprisingly bland. So was their fish taco. It was not crispy at all. In summary, TacoBar didn't meet my expectations. Just an ok taco joint in the lower pac heights area. The street it's on is filled with a ton of restaurants some of which, in my opinion, are way better than this place! I don't have a lot of complaints about this place, I just didn't think it was that great either! One thing that I loved was that they had two different corn appetizers: elote and esquite! I tried the esquite which is corn in a bowl with cream and cheese. It was a little watery, but overall, very yummy! I also tried the veggie tacos and a veggie burrito. The outer cheese shell that comes with the veggie tacos was interesting but not really my cup of tea. The veggies in the tacos were mainly just carrots and they didn't have a lot of flavor in my opinion. I loved the guac that it came with and they don't skimp on how much guac they give you (ahem chipotle). The burrito was also just alright; nothing super special, it was just your regular run-of-the-mill veggie burrito. They're awesome. 3) DO get the kids quesadilla, extra crispy. It's well priced, and it's quite large. This place is overpriced for most of their menu, and I often wish for the previous tenant, La Salsa, to return. Unfortunately, the food is just okay (burritos, quesadillas, tacos), and at $5 per taco, the prices are a bit steep. My lunch of 2 tacos and a drink was $14. The batter on the fish in my fish taco was thick and slightly undercooked and the carne asada taco was bland. I am hopeful that because today is opening day, the kinks will be worked out in time. Cheap and cheerful neighborhood taco bar with plenty vegetarian options. Liked the bright red/blue/yellow decor, but would have liked to have prices written on menu board, kinda weird to order blind. I tried the tacos, and they were very generous with the guac, bonus for people who love the green stuff. The taco was inside a crispy cheesy shell which was delicious, but the vegetable selection was mostly carrots, a little disappointing. I visited this restaurant on 19 June 2012 while on vacation in San Francisco. After reading other reviewers of Taco Bar, I have to wonder if we ate at the same restaurant. Overall, the food is very good. I had two of the pulled pork tacos, which were a special the day I was there. The tacos were on your standard size corn tortilla, like you would find in any local supermarket. Another reviewer mentioned that the tortillas were three inches, mine clearly were not. The pork, which was topped by a small amount of citrus marinated onions, was tender, tasty, plentiful and clearly of excellent quality. It was not something that you would see in a cheaper taco and wonder what part of the pig it came from. Each taco was $3.25, and in my opinion worth it. After I was finished eating a a man that I think was the chef came to my table. He was very friendly and recommended the coconut flan. It was as good as he said it would be. It was a denser flan, not jello-like in consistency, and very good. Other reviewers mentioned the small portions that one gets at the Taco Bar. After scoping out what the other patrons were eating and seeing the size of my tacos and flan, I have to wonder again if we were eating at the same restaurant. Another reviewer mentioned that this place is "deceptive". I didn't find it so, but if you are doubtful about this place just check out a menu and look around at what others are eating. When I was there the place was very crowded and busy, a deceptive place wouldn't have such a crowd I would think. As for the price, I believe it was fair, given the quality of the food and the quick and friendly service. I found the food at Taco Bar food to be authentic. I come from Los Angeles and have a good idea as to what good Mexican food is thanks to my Mexican friends, colleagues and students. With a bunch of eccentric yet delicious sounding tacos, how can you resist a place like this especially with such a cute name like "Taco Bar"?! I came here at 10:30 AM for some food to cure the void in my stomach from a night's worth of drinking. I got the breakfast burrito with chorizo, scrambled eggs, rice, and beans and mm mm mm. TOTALLY hit the spot! They have two salsa you can get: red or green. Green is limey-er and the red one is a bit spicier. The green one is my favorite. They also have horchata and watermelon juice for $2.80 and was pretty well made. One complaint? You have to BUY your own chips, they're not free :( Why I'd come again? To try all their funky tacos. Decided to stop here last week because the cute decor inside. The restaurant itself is quite small, with a few tables and counters. My friend and I perused the menu while we stood in line waiting to order. This place is the type where you order/pay at the cashier and they bring your food to your table. I decided on one steak taco and one shrimp taco. The steak was juicy and came with pinto beans. The shrimp taco was a bit spicy - which they did not mention on the menu - but nonetheless delicious. Boyfriend and I were wandering around looking for something small to eat and came upon tacobar. It looked pretty good with a full menu so we decided to give it a try. Best random find ever. The carne asada taco was super good. Not only do they have the regular soft shell they have a hard, sweeter shell outside that makes the taco crunchy but soft at the same time. The guac was super tasty and the steak was meaty and not fatty. The salsa had a nice kick to it. I didn't try the torta but boyfriend said it was really good. The churros were really yummy with the right amount of crunch but also a soft cream filling. Wholly satisfying. The staff were friendly and we were greeted with smiles and were served quickly. I don't know if it's because I didn't have any expectations that I am so surprised by the quality of this place but I do know I'll definitely be back. read more

The fish tacos we had consisted of a piece of fish on top of some cabbage (supposed to be slaw) and corn tortilla. There was no salsa, no flavor and it just seemed sad and frankly unacceptable. The Jicama salad was just some chopped jicama, a few pieces of avocado, some nuts and tangerine, no dressing or flavor. Not quite sure why the nuts were there either. Very rude cashier. My smart phone was having internet issues and I couldn't bring up my vaccination card quickly. 5G in SF is sketchy because no one wants towers in their neighborhoods. I could show the file name on my phone but the image wouldn't show. His response when I said I was having internet issues was "well you're using a smart phone" and was very dismissive. So I left. I like the food so I might be back. In the meantime folks who run businesses could be a bit more patient and empathetic with potential customers. I came here for a late lunch. It was moderately crowded with a lot of people who seemed to be ordering to go. Nice friendly corner spot with a good amount of seating, both regular tables, counter top tables, and two small tables out front. I got a fish taco and a carnitas taco which were both pretty good. I'm more of a simple traditional taco with meat onion and cilantro but these were pretty well made with extras like beans salsa and guac. The fish was really good and tender with lots of flavor. Soft and perfectly cooked. The carnitas was decent but slightly dry for my taste. The only downside for my meal was 1. Chips were not free (cmon, man, free chips is a staple at Mexican joints) and 2. My sister got a burrito and when asked whether she wanted sour cream, guac and cheese, she replied with no sour cream but she received a burrito with no guac or cheese but only sour cream.
