Me and my girlfriend were waiting for her glasses to be ready at Eyemart next door, so I figured I'd grab a quick snack to pass the time. I ordered a quesadilla and a small fries to go. There was one other group of two who had already gotten their food so I figured it would be fast. 20 minutes after ordering, I tried my best to kindly ask them the status of my food (having worked in food service I feel awful even asking for how much longer things are going to take). The impression I got was that my order had been forgotten or misplaced due to a shift change, as a few employees walked in while I waited at one of the tables. In no exaggeration, another 20 minutes went by until I got my food. Again, this was a cheese quesadilla and fries. The fries were very undercooked. The quesadilla was pretty much what I was expecting out of a quick snack from a counter-serve restaurant, so no problem there. All in all it was sloppy waste of my time and money. Del Taco is less than half a mile away, and obviously far more reliable. read more

This is my go to spot for some good authentic mexican food in South Reno. The service is quick, the staff is great, and the prices are right. My favorite is the flautas combo and their wet burrito. And their salsa is also my favorite for tacos. I come here about once every 7-10 days but always forget to snap a picture because the food is immediately consumed. read more

I normally go to the Tacos Del Rey on Mae Anne but we were going to the convention center so gave this one a shot. I had the Carne Asada Burrito because that is my go to. It was very tasty and a healthy size, meaning I wasn't bloated after I ate it but I wasn't still hungry. I will say it was a little greasy, it oozed out of the burrito with every bite. I liked the salsa Verde over the salsa they give you with the Burrito. I do wish they served chips with the Burrito because they give you a big portion of salsa for your burrito, I feel the salsa goes to waste without chips. Great little taco place in South Reno right off of Virginia Ave and Neil road. Plenty of parking in a little strip mall (Petsmart and Total Wine) Cute and clean with good prices. I had my usual one Carne Asada and one pork carnitas taco. The beef was a little on the dry side but the pork was oh so good. Horchata was a little on the sweet side. My son had his usual quesadilla. Maybe a little on the greasy side and we also ordered enchiladas. I have had better at other places, but I could easily make this place a habit. Ok. Let me tell you about me and tacos. We have what people call a "love/ hate" relationship. I am obsessed with these beings since I popped out of my mother's conch. I have made tacos out of literally everything imaginable. Everything. I've had tacos every city, state I go to. Everywhere. I know what good tacos are. I have personally taken a strong liking to tacos spots named after the city of origin the owners are from or they represent (e.g. Tacos Sinaloa, Tacos Nayarit, Tacos Jalisco, etc). SEVERAL different types of meats and styles they've been cooked in. Genuine Mexican family on the grills/ stoves whippin' up authentic Mexican tacos. On this trip I had the cabeza, pastor and birria (with a bowl of dipping caldo w/ extra cilantro and cebolla). It was hot off the stove, beautifully prepared and very flavorful. Each type of meat had it's own party for your mouth. They had buche and tripas which I didn't have room for but look forward to trying. Not to mention the Mango Michelada (made to order) they were offering I didn't have time for (but didn't wanna turn up on my flight coming up). Yes, tacos before my flight. They were not greasy or unpleasant to my stomach so I spared the rest of the passengers. These tacos agreed with me in every way. Great taco-coma while I flew. Straight pass. EXTREMELY UNDERPRICED. Tacos ain't just for Tuesday. I'm a long term fan of Taco El Rey and was super excited they'd opened a South Reno location. Reading initial reviews scared me away a bit, thinking maybe they weren't the same spot Id once loved, but it seems after a few months of operation all of those kinks have been ironed out and I was excited to check in. So today, after a long morning working nearby, I made it happen. Walking in and seeing the menu I was reminded of a few things I loved from the NW Reno location, namely the ceviche and tostadas, and made note to come back for these before I ordered! This time though, I was there for tacos, and ordered up 5. Birria, cabeza, lengua, al pastor, and chorizo. Each one was filled with a solid amount of meat resting in a tender tortilla, topped with a sprinkle of cilantro and onion. I added a touch of the red and green salsa, and a squeeze of lime to each, before I decided to split the meat between the two tortillas making two tacos from each! I enjoyed each one, favoring the al pastor and the cabeza. There's just something about the slow braised, unctuous meat and I think next time I'd order 2 or more of these! Tacos El Rey is a solid spot to satisfy that craving. My 5 tacos cost just more than $8 and left me feeling good. I'll be back. read more

Ok.... I gave them another star for revamping the dinning room. And because I had the opportunity to try a pork burrito.other than that.... still super disappointed. The salt shaker, napkin holder and all the sauce bottles had clearly not been cleaned on any of the tables. The window was super dirty. ( the effort to keep things like this clean, is a clear indicator and reflection of the kitchen! ) We ordered nachos with no meat extra cheese,pork burrito, pork tamale and a modelo negro. Our bill came to 19.00 even..... so not a bad deal if the food volume reflected it. Nachos were not good. Chips were stale .... AND they put them in the MICROWAVE to melt the cheese! Are you kidding me with that.... no wonder it tasted like that :( yuck! When my husbands pork tamale came the entire top of the tamale was missing. His tamale was totally lopsided with meat. All the meat was in the bottom .... as it should have been packed all the way through. Now let's get to the good part. The pork burrito was with every penny! Lots of super flavorful shredded pork, beans and rice and none of the extra fillers! Super good! The tables have been wrapped with a sticky fake leather type thing.... at least this way you don't have see how bad the tables are. Love the benches and chairs. The pictures don't overwhelm the location and there's lots of light. Staff is super nice : Bathroom was clean and the parking is super easy! I've known about and loved Tacos El Rey since they were just a tiny little taco joint off of Sutro selling tacos for $1. This was only my second time at their South Virginia location, and I have to say that great things don't ever change. The tacos are still delicious, the meal combos are as filling as always, and the service is great. My husband and I went there for dinner because he was craving "real" tacos, and they did not disappoint. For those who've never been, here's a pro-tip: you don't have to wait to be seated (this isn't a fancy restaurant, just grab a table) and when you know what you want, just wander up to the counter and order. Sitting in this little restaurant...I was inspired. Inspired to find the best Taco's in Reno. Because these here are some pretty darn good tacos. I normally get a variety when I go in, but the last time I went in, I got the combo plate with two enchiladas (dry) and one taco with an additional taco added. I had to get a Cabeza taco. It was just soooooo good. The place is a standard fast food taco counter with some nice booths and tables to sit at. Not lots of space and not a ton of atmosphere, but still nice enough to not feel like you are sitting in some corporate chain of death. My food came out pretty quick and was very tasty. I was in a slight hurry to get home so I didn't seek extra flavors of salsa. I will have to do that the next time. This time I just enjoyed the simple and reasonably priced meal. I asked for beans & sour cream on the side instead of on my nachos & they did the exact opposite putting everything I wanted on my nachos on the side. Great location yes, food and service- that's another story. We went in on a Friday night, the girl at the register kept messing with her facemask- which I totally get- they're not super comfortable. We didn't ask for a receipt- so that's on us. There were at least 5 tables/orders given that had come in after us before we were asked what we ordered. They brought out the wrong dishes and after about 40 minutes they finally brought them out. My husband had ordered a michelada in the meantime by which that took additional time over others as well. Super delicious fast Mexican food with excellent service. The staff are so friendly and everything I have ever ordered from here is fresh. I know it's good when my picky son wants to order more food. Trust me, he isn't the easiest to please with his fine palate, but this place sure does the trick. He loves the green habenero sauce, but I prefer the homemade salsa with the carne asada tacos. The rice and beans are delicious as well. I usually never eat the rice and beans at a restaurant, but I really enjoy them here. The prices are also great and the restaurant is clean. If you want great Mexican food this is the place for you. I ordered the Nachos because I knew that it would have basically everything all the other dishes have. So the Nachos come with chips with melted cheese, beans, tomatoes, avocado, jalapenos, sour cream, onions and cilantro, and your choice of meat. The chips were good and strong enough to carry the toppings. I had the tender pork with my nachos and it was the perfect choice in my opinion. The only thing I didn't like was that the cheese got a little cold and hardened after a minute so it wasn't creamy or melty. But all the flavors married well and filled me right up. You will get your money's worth with this dish. The nachos are enough for one or if you want to share it. I could definitely see myself coming back for lunch and dinner. We love Tacos El Ray! Rarely do we go to this location, but it's equally as delicious as their other location. Tacos El Ray is the closest I've found in Reno to your traditional street tacos. I always order the carne asada tacos with a side of rice and beans. I don't usually like the rice from Mexican restaurants, but Tacos El Ray makes DELICIOUS rice! Twice I've eaten here, and twice I've ordered the taco combo platter, albeit different types of meat; most recently I had al pastor, carne asada, and carnitas. The tacos here are perfect, served in doubled corn tortillas with onions and cilantro, and with your choice of red or green sauce. The chips are freshly made and the pico de gallo alongside is on point as well. After seeing another family ordering tortas in the booth next to me, and taking in all the other choices on the menu, I know I'll be back to try more. Tacos El Rey, you and I can definitely be friends! After being on the hunt for a delicious bean and cheese burrito in Reno I have found you!! You may be like, bean and cheese burrito? How can one mess that up?! But it has happened at almost every single recommended mexican place we have been to, BUT NOT HERE!! They actually put beans into the burrito and a normal amount of cheese, they fold the burrito so you get a bite of each item all at once! The beans are delicious! The rice is delicious! The service has been great the times we have gone! The price is right and they even have mexican coke in two sizes!! The burritos are served with a spicy salsa which is also fantastic. Coming from LA, this is like a little piece of home! I avoided Tacos El Rey because their location in NW Reno has let me down the few times we ordered from there. That restaurant isnt clean and the service is a little on the rude side... BUT South Reno, you're amazing and I appreciate you! I'm pretty bummed. I got Carne Asada Fries to go for dinner tonight. They looked really good when I opened the box, but then I got a whiff of fish. I think they must have fried some fish in the same oil before making my order. My fries tasted like fish and the meat was burned to a crisp. Not to bad not too good. Atmosphere When we first arrived the room seemed a bit hot. Hot enough where I even reconsidered eating there. But I ordered a couple ice cold Horchatas and they seemed to cool me right down. Food Chicken Enchiladas and a Carne Asada Taco with Refried Beans and Rice The food was good. The enchiladas were tasty and satisfied the flavors I had been craving. If you like hot sauce you can go nuts here. They had a variety of 6 hot sauces available at every table. Large Horchatas The Horchatas were good. I personally like mine with cinnamon, but it was refreshing and a welcome treat on a hot summer day. Food - My eyes went to the wet burrito on the menu and it stuck there. I was thinking Christmas style, I do not even know if they do that but I spaced it when I was asked how I wanted the sauce. DUH!!! I ended up with a sweet red sauce that went well with the pulled pork that I picked for my protein. That burrito was huge! Service - Great staff. Our cashier was friendly. Old school hand written tickets with a little pull off bottom with your number you take to your table. One of the ladies will call the last digit or last two digits off that ticket, and just flag them down and your food is brought to you. Been here 3-4 times. So this review will have all of them into one. Being new to Reno coming from Vegas and being from southern California I know a thing or two about tacos/burritos. My 1st week in Reno I decided to try them out I had the Barbacoa and the tacos plate. Barbacoa was ok nothing special. But staying at the hotel next door it was perfect. A week or so later I came back, i was craving a carne asada burrito. To my luck they didnt have carne asada. Which was very disappointing and shocking. That's like McDonald's not having fries or big mac sauce. Visit #2 On my way home I tried them again and as I walked in I was greeted "sorry were closed." I was surprised considering 5 people walked in before me. I said ok. And walked out. Visit #3 Came back today. Got the wet carne asada burrito. I wish they actually put some carne in it. The burrito inside was all mush. The rice and beans were almost a paste stuck together and the carne asada well.... it was almost non existing. I know we have to cut corners and keep our overhead but cutting on the meat is not how u keep customers from coming back. I tried my daughter plain tacos and the meat was just nasty fat and salty. Very salty. And that's pretty much about the only meat I've tasted here in my 3-4 visits. This place is very stingy on their meats which is not a good thing and their horchata was extremely watered down. Not sure I'll come back anytime soon. But if and when I do, I really hope it tastes better than this last visit. Ps. Containers with food, in this case chips/tostadas should be covered fully. Came in on a Saturday, the place was not busy. Ordered, waited for 25 mins. Finally went up to cashier to find out what was going on, she couldn't find our order slip, asked up for our receipt that she didn't give us & insisted she did. We asked for a refund so we could leave..... She never even apologized. Glad we didn't eat there, after sitting at the table for 25 mins, noticed this place is absolutely filthy - the condaments on the table were encrusted in filth!
