I'm really disappointed in this place now. Have had good food here the past few years, but it's going downhill for me. Tacos went from $4 to $4.75, now they are $6! The tacos are literally bland meat (especially the chicken), iceberg lettuce and colby jack cheese. Last night, 8 tacos ran me $60 with tip and they were just lame. They might have some redeeming menu items, but I don't think I'll be back to try. Heck, I don't even know if I'll be back for taco Tuesday. A $6 taco should get you a pretty epic taco, just sad. I've been here a few times, I've tried their tacos, quesadillas, birria pizza and it is all good. I will be coming back to try other items. I have to say I love there handmade tortilla tacos due to the different topping each of their different meats have. The meat has good taste, you can taste the difference between the meat, unlike some other places. I also like their quesadillas. The cheese is different than most places, I do not recall having cheese this tasty at any other place other than in actual Mexico. Their birria pizza is ok. Although I know this is more of an Americanized food item I did not really enjoy eating it due to personally thinking it was an open faced burrito. In any event, the service is always great here but parking can be a challenge. If there is additional parking anywhere, the signage is not clear or easily visible. Wonderful Mexican pictures on the wall and music. The food arrived fresh and to our hearts content. We ordered: - the asada fries which was large. It's probably good for about four people. A lot of meat and very tasty. - I ordered the carne asada taco, a taco el pastor. Wow! What makes the tacos is the handmade tortilla, very tasty and filling - my husband ordered the shrimp taco and fish taco. Shrimp taco they fried the outside of the tortilla a little bit and it was delicious. Both tacos were very filling and also had the handmade tortillas. We were filled up with just the 2 tacos each! After searching through Yelp for some authentic Mexican food in Costa Mesa area, I finally settled on Tacos Madre. Reviews looked good and menu was extensive. Had a craving for enchiladas so I ordered the green chicken enchiladas. They were extremely flavorful and sauce had a slight kick to it. Not pictured was a nopales (cactus) taco I also ordered which was laid on a homemade tortilla. Perfect vegetarian option. Lastly, I ordered dessert which was composed of a cajeta churro with vanilla ice cream and was the cherry on top to this delicious meal. The two servers who assisted me were extremely nice and made pleasant conversation, wish I would've gotten their names. It was nicely lit, well decorated, and the catchy Spanish music had a few customers dancing in line while waiting to order. Will definitely be stopping by again next time I get a craving! read more

Quesataco: Loaded with the most tender, succulent birria and dripping with melted cheese. Perfection. Taco Gobernador: Generously seasoned shrimp, melty cheese, and a heaping serving of guac. Horchata: Sweet and creamy with just the right amount of cinnamon. Crispy tacos: For some reason, it's so difficult to find decent hard tacos (tacos dorados) in OC. These are amazing! I get asada and typically ask for extra cheese. The restaurant itself is clean and serviceable, but this is not the kind of place you go to for ambiance. It can get really crowded on Taco Tuesdays. Two would have sufficed for me! The fish taco was the highlight and I would definitely recommend. The parking lot is a bit tiny so be aware that you may need to park in an adjacent lot. This restaurant was busy when I got there but the wait was reasonable. My biggest nitpick: the menu is placed high up, to the left, and *in front* of the cashier. If you didn't memorize your order, you'll have to step back and away from the register to look at the menu. Very awkward placing. Great tacos, great value. We came in with a large group during the weekend. It's was everyone in the groups first visit and we all lived the food. Out of the 4 different tacos that I had, the my preference list was: Carne Asada, Chicken, Al Pastor, Carnitas. I also tried part of a Keto Asada taco which the pan fried cheese tortilla was really oily. Yes it's expected, but I don't think that I could eat more than one of them. I came to this restaurant this past Taco Tuesday - upon arriving, I noticed that the parking situation was relatively difficult as the lot in front and back was pretty small despite demand. Even inside, this location is a pretty small restaurant, so be aware of that if you are bringing a large group. The tacos stole the show, however! Street tacos were $2 each, and, despite initially ordering only 3, I had to go back in and order even more. They definitely hit the spot; my favorite was the adobada. The only thing was that food was being delivered pretty slowly, but that was understandable given the large crowds and popularity. I'll definitely be here again on a future Tuesday! read more

I really wanted to like this place a lot more. I came in on a weekday and there was no more than 3 people in there, but still waited about 20 mins for my 3 tacos. Not to mention the price of each taco.I think I paid over $15 for them (just the tacos and no sides) which is crazy to think about. Now... the tacos were actually very good, the tortillas were made fresh and the meat was flavorful, but yet didn't feel super authentic to me. It was just the tortilla and meat and spoonful of guacamole. Where's the cilantro? Onions? The salsa? I think if you're taco is $5 it's got to have everything that makes a good taco a taco. On another note they have a huge selection and very clean and inviting ambiance, but after this experience, I really can't picture coming back and spending that much money again. Tacos Madre has been open for about a month and a half now and I'm glad I finally got to eat here for the first tine yesterday! They are situated right on Harbor by OCC and they have a big, tall sign that you can't miss! One of their big attention grabbers is their hand-made tortillas which they use for their tacos and wow, you can totally taste how fresh they are! I ordered 3 tacos with their handmade tortillas and a cheese quesadilla. The tacos were very filling and had a good portion of meat in each one! You also get free chips and salsa while you wait for the rest of your food to come out! Each tacos comes with a salsa and lime to garnish on top of your taco and you also get radishes as well! I was shocked when the cheese quesadilla came out as the presentation for it was phenomenal and I was surprised at all the toppings that came with it! The meat in each taco was so flavorful, moist, and not dry! Everything was made to order and you could tell! The carnitas was my favorite out of the 3 tacos that I had but the other 2 were just as good! The cheese quesadilla had loads of cheese inside and I enjoyed eating that thoroughly The crispiness of the tortillas was also a nice texture to have as well.
