The store owner is crazy. I ordered dinner for delivery one day. I had to leave my house for a few minutes to pick my kids up from the bus stop. When I came back, she had broken in to my house asking for the money for the food. She had let herself in the front door and walked upstairs. She then asked for a bigger tip, and she told me that if I didn't order more next time, they would not deliver to me, even though it was over $20 worth of food. I should have called the police on this crazy woman. Never order delivery from here, the store owner is so desperate for money, that she will break in to your house if you do not answer the door right away. read more

I have been coming here for years, even when it was the previous owner. I have never had an issue with anything I've eaten in the restaurant or ordered to take home. I ordered from this place and the staff was INCREDIBLY rude when they delivered my order. The woman not only rang my doorbell 5 times but she BANGED, and I mean BANGED, on our window of our house without even a second of wait in between. When I opened the door the woman threw my food at me and told me never to order again as she called me TWICE with no answer (my fiancé was upstairs sleeping with his phone, but our home is clearly marked and we've never had problems before). We order a lot because my daughter loves it but the last two deliveries that I have received have reeked of cigarette smoke! It saturates the food. I told them about it last time and they seem not to care. I cannot be the only one who noticed or complains about this issue and they are not fixing the problem. This is the worst chinese food I've ever had in pittsburgh. Honestly, it's probably the worst I've ever had. Ordered delivery and the food came hot and the prices are a lot higher than other places. I expected at least decent and I was extremely disappointed. This place barely uses any flavor other than salt and msg. The meat is low quality... Ugh there's just nothing good to say about this place. It was terrible and I heard that this place was shut down temporarily because of some complaints about food poisoning. The atmosphere is ambiguous --- large screen t.v.s as if it aspires to be a sports bar, but otherwise any chinese restaurant usa - from the 1970's. The food was ridiculously salty, defying the owners' claim of "no msg." The sauces were unnecessarily thick --- have they not figured out that Americans have moved far beyond old-style gelatinous Asian cuisine, and on to fresher food? This was my first time at the restaurant in many years. It is attractive and comfortable. The staff is friendly and the service was efficient. My General Tso's tofu was tasty, but the portion was small for $9 for lunch. This, after all, is not a meat or seafood item. The restaurant could afford to offer more for the price. This was a nice surprise. I really like sushi, but I don't like having to always drive into the city for decent sushi. I recently discovered this place just a couple of miles from my house located in the suburbs. I've tried it twice now. The first time I was a little nervous about trying the sushi... again, due to its location. Fox Chapel is better known for Starbucks rather than good ethnic food. I had the curried chicken and the steamed dumplings. These were both of good quality. I thought the curry with the chicken lacked a little flavor, but I'm from the caribbean and used to west indian curry. The dumplings were nice because they actually were light and not too heavy like they usually are. I think probably the best chinese in town is the Sesame Inn with a few locations, but this place is fine. What I am really impressed with is the Sushi. I had lunch there today and was impressed with the servie and the chef. The service was really good... maybe a little too much attention, but better that than the alternative. The Chef seemed to be a trained sushi chef. I'm guessing he learned his trade in Asia. I had some excellent quality white tuna, which was delicious. I also had the spicy scallop with avocado sushi. It was really nice with great texture with the creaminess of the avocado and sushi and the crunchiness of something else (not sure what). I also had the crabmeat sushi, which was pretty good quality. The rice had good flavor and the right amount of stickiness. The sushi was wrapped perfectly. The chef was helpful and very nice. I would have preferred authentic wasabi instead of the pasty type stuff you get everywhere, but again that's pretty standard. I didn't try any of the rolls. I don't typically eat rolls, because they usually are pretty heavy and one of the reasons I eat sushi is to offset my typical gluttony. However, the selection seemed really good and I was told by another customer at the sushi bar that the TAI PEI 101 Roll was great. It should be with a $24 pricetag for a roll. The ingredients are 7 oz. of lobster, eel, asparagus, onion, cucumber, and seaweed salad. If this place were in the city I would probably just give it 3 stars, but the fact that it's in the burb's and has this good quality justifies the 4 stars. And, they deliver! read more

Most dishes on the menu are American style Chinese food. Not a bad choice if you just want to have a quick bite at lunch time. I felt that the food there is a little pricier than it should be. Aside from these I do recommend their basil chicken, which is a traditional Taiwanese dish. read more

I guesses I've succumbed to the groupon curse, as I regularly get take out from this place and am usually pleased. The restaurant has taken a dive, too, in regard to quality of food, quantity of meat vs. veggie ratio in dishes. They are cheaping out because they can afford to. The 15238 zipcode ensures their continued success because wealthy SAHMs will be going to their private pilates class and leave the nanny with 80$ to get Chinese delivered. Everything is a la carte. I'm not sure its all made in-house anymore. Since new management several years ago, the food quality has drastically decreased and the MSG levels have increased. Miso soup is MSG soup with a tofu amount comparable to a baby aspirin. You may get two wontons in your quart of soup if you are lucky. General tsos, cheap chicken parts, incredibly spongy texture. Moo shu has plenty of cabbage, hardly any meat. The sushi is okay, but I've had some really salty fish, which makes me think its got some kind of preservative added on. We dined in recently, ordered GT and MSP, used my 15 for 30 groupon and still owed 15 for two Cokes and the tip... portions were small (I chalk this up to using the groupon). read more

We went to Tai Pei because of Groupon and its closeness to our house. The place was not crowded that Sunday evening, and the service was good. The food was OK. The Mongolian beef was not very fresh and had more celery than beef. The fried tofu tasted like the packaged fried tofu for about $2 from a Chinese grocery store. Tai Pei just added the sauce and some fillers. Overall, food is not very fresh. Entrees are $12 and up. read more

I usually order for lunch and the food, usually superb. Service leaves alot to be desired. Today I order my usual General Tsaos with an extra shrimp roll. Food gets here, I take it my desk and it's not my order. Fine, stuff happens. Call and the gentleman says it was a mistake and we will have the driver bring it up. I make sure to remind him of the Shrimp Roll and he states that it was never on the initial order and tries to charge me 3.00 for it. After some pointing out at it was left off the initial order when in fact it was ordered and he is now charging me for after messing up my order would be bad business, he reluctantly agrees on the free 3.00 Shrimp roll. Waters and waitresses always show gratitude and remember you from the last time you went there. I was very pleased that whenever we called to let them know that they had forgotten two of our things, even though they were small items, they still came right back to our house to drop them off & with NO extra fees. There have been many times when other delivery places have forgotten things and said they can only bring them back if we pay another delivery fee! Even though THEY forgot and we were charged for the items they forgot plus the delivery & tip. That has turned us away from quite a few places, but I'm happy to report Tai past does not pull those shenanigans & were very nice and apologetic when they brought the forgotten items back. Ordered General Tso's shrimp and an egg roll for delivery as a hungry nurse on Mothers Day at the VA hospital May 8th. Delivery was fast but the food was TERRIBLE! I couldn't even eat it, the shrimp tasted super fishy as if it were rotten. The egg roll was soggy and cold. I ended up eating only the rice. Also, VERY EXPENSIVE! Total for the above was $24! Beware of the delivery guy who will try to scam you for a bigger tip! I gave him $30 for the $24 order and asked for $2 back (which would give him a generous $4 tip in addition to the $2 "deliver fee"). He claimed he didn't have any one dollar bills. (Dude, you have ONE JOB! Hand me my order and cash me out!) Rather than stiff him, I gave him the entire $30 to keep...so my inedible meal cost $22 with an $8 tip! No one on my nursing unit will be eating from this place again, I threw out the menu and wrote a warning about this dive for the entire hospital to read. I just hope the bite of rotten shellfish I did eat doesn't make a return appearance later this evening! read more

just got back from TaiPei. today was dinner AND a floor show. First, the food was adequate, except for the won ton for two which was full of won tons, shrimp and chicken. with a light and not greasy broth.It was good. The floor show erupted soon after we were seated, when a young woman across the way began to harangue her mother...her mom apparently hadn't gone to enough of her soccor games as a child, didnot know the names of her teammates, had never taken a picture of her on the field, and couldn't make up her mind about getting a f&^%ing iphone 5....i know all this because she wasn't shy about letting everyone in the restaurant hear her, or letting the expletives fly. apparently no one has ever told her to knock it off, including and especially from my perspective, the manager of taiPei. He stood across the room with his mouth agape in shock, but with no concern about the comfort of his other patrons and their dining experience. It was a bizarre and uncomfortable experience, and follows a pattern of poor management decisions i have seen at tai pei recently.They know how to take in the money, but are less than concerned with anything else. read more

I've been a regular Tai Pei customer for around 4 to 5 years. I go there specifically for the sushi (the Boston rolls are phenomenal). I find the quality of their sushi is great and I have never had issues or gotten sick from it. I rarely have to wait at all to be seated. The longest I've ever waited was around 25 minutes and that was within a few days of Christmas, so it was to be expected the place would be a little busier than normal. The sushi is so tasty I consider Tai Pei the de facto standard of sushi and compare all other sushi restaurants to it. So far I have not found any other restaurants that I feel are as good as Tai Pei in regard to sushi. That being said, I have never actually ordered a cooked/regular meal at Tai Pei. Because of that, I can't comment on the quality of their cooked foods. What I can say is my girlfriend, brother, and sister-in-law all regularly order cooked foods and enjoy them. For me, Tai Pei is 100% about the sushi, though. I have been a very happy sushi customer for years and suspect I will be for many years to come. read more
