The happy hour rolls were tempting...but I chose the Niku don combo because that seemed the most worth the price, and boy was it. I was shocked at how much soba and beef bowl they gave. Typically for combos, they give a smaller portion of each, but the soba looked like a full size and the bowl was quite a lot as well. I'm not complaining at all. I barely managed to finish the soba...couldn't really eat much of the bowl so I took that home. Definitely something I would share with someone else, maybe with an order of a roll. Only thing that was difficult was getting the waiter to help. When they came, they were very nice and helpful. However, there seemed to be too many customers compared to waiters, so it was hard to get service when we needed it without waiting too long. read more

Taiko is a great spot in Brentwood. Their food is excellent and well priced. The portions are reasonably sized, not too much and not too little. The service is efficient, but it takes awhile. As for food, I usually get the chicken teriyaki bowl and it is fantastic. Today, I had chicken katsu and curry and that was also amazing. Their spicy tuna on crispy rice is pretty good too! I also love their house salad and grilled shishito peppers. I'd recommend any of these as some good options. They are located in the Brentwood gardens and the ambience is pretty good, nothing too special though. Taiko is a great spot of you are craving some good Japanese food in the Brentwood area and aren't tying to break the bank! read more

Hmmm... the food was not outstanding but not bad either. Not the best I ever had but quality and portion size were good. Hits the spot, although somewhat unsatisfyingly? However, they have many options and great lunch specials to choose from! Agedashi tofu: loved the classic flavor, but the outside was not crispy at all, which was kind of disappointing. However, it is a great classic dish and appetizer to start out with. Tempura udon with miso soup base upgrade (+extra cost $$): actually from trying my friend's regular house fish soup base, i should have just opted for that instead, since it is actually pretty flavorful! I really liked the tempura seaweed--i feel like i don't ever really see that done in ither places, but it's crunchy and delicious! They give you a chili flake shaker so you can spice up your soup to your heart's content. Udon noodles were great. Portions were good, i was very full. I went here with some friends. The service was great and they were able to seat us promptly. The food was decent but the way everything was plated looked really pretty. Unfortunately, some time after eating here my stomach started to hurt really bad. I ordered the sashimi platter and I'm the only one at the table who ordered it. Everyone else enjoyed their meal and the sashimi platter was actually pretty good though. What should you order here? Deluxe Chirashi EVERY TIME! Why? Because it's special and you cannot get this anywhere else. It has an assortment of sashimi including yellowtail, salmon, tuna, sweet shrimp (the good kind), uni, unagi, ikura and more. The best thing is the rice. It's not plain o rice. It's sushi rice with shitake mushrooms and nori. The presentation looks as good as it tastes. Not to mention, it comes with miso soup, salad, and you get a choice ice cream at the end of your meal too! I've been coming here for 5+ years and this is what I always order after trying a bunch of things on the menu. Other good options include the yellowtail don (it's so buttery, you'll thank me) and the seafood nabeyaki. Oh and huge kudos to Mika. She's the BEST. This is a mediocre neighborhood Japanese w average execution, subpar food quality and bad service. I tolerated it out of convenience, reasonable prices but cant anymore. I got this food for takeout when the restaurant was mostly empty. The chef obviously put the tempura straight from the fryer into the box without draining or cooling, thus melting it turning lunch into a carcinogenic, toxic trap. The place being empty means there were few guests, which means the kitchen was not busy, which means they simply dont care. And thats what characterizes this restaurant. They simply dont care to deliver a better product or service. They have no concern whatsoever for the customer. I often order from here but this will be my last time. Why pay money to be patron to a place where none of the staff give a damn about you? From front of house to back of house, thats the experience of eating here. 3.5 Stars So after hunting down for katsudon, I figured a place with donburis would have them. Unfortunately, Taiko did not have katsudon and had no great lunch specials. I had ordered the grilled chicken over rice donburi and it was alright. Chicken was dry and there was no egg or onions which is normally what I am use to when it comes to Donburi. The best donburi I have tried in Los Angeles was at Daiko. Portions are pretty small for 12 bucks when I have gotten soup, salad, and a bigger bowl of donburi for 8 bucks in Silicon Valley. Fresh food and great service! I'm honestly confused by some of the poorer reviews since the sushi at least is awesome. I went here for lunch with family about 45 mins before they closed to get ready for dinner, but we were still pleasantly seated and taken care of quickly. Everything I ordered came out great - the salmon sushi melted in my mouth, the fire crunch roll was tasty without being overly spicy, and the eel avocado roll was one of the best of its kind I've had in a bit. It's not the cheapest sushi ever and the restaurant itself is pretty nondescript, but I would still be happy to eat here again. read more

I've eaten here a few times, and I've always been graced by good japanese food at an affordable price. The appetizer sampler is good to share for 2-3 people and features spicy tuna, albacore and yellowtail. There are a variety of textures (classic sashimi, crunchy, etc) and flavors to appeal to everyone The sushi rolls are good, but not outwardly mindblowing...but you can expect the ingredients to be fresh, the tempura to be crispy and lightly fried, and a neat presentation. My favorite dish here is the black cod - at $17, they give you a pretty good sized slab thats perfectly cooked, and you get nicely grilled vegetables around the side (eggplant and zucchini) with some tofu. The combo udons come in a hearty portion with soft noodles, but the broth itself isn't too flavorful. I like to pair it with the kakiage don! read more

If you love curry udon, come here. If you hate this place's curry udon, PM me your favorite place. Because this is the best curry udon I've had since Japan. Period. Also, if you know a good katsudon place LMK as they do not serve that here. This is my go to for lunch/dinner. Sawtelle is trash compared to this place. Their rice bowl and udon/soba combination is quite a deal and leaves you very full. Think, Fukada, but bigger portions at about the same price. The curry udon is simply the closest to the the ones I get in Japan every time I've gone there, and the steak meat that they use in their rice bowls seem to be of high quality beef. Not your typical round beef like everyone else. I've only really had their rice and noodles dishes here and cannot comment much on their sushi menu. The spicy tuna roll I did try was good though and I did not have any complaints. If you are in the mood for some noodles or rice, or a combination of both, then give the udon and soba noodles a try! The soba is good both as a cold dipping noodle or in their hot broth. Udon is your typical good udon but also with good broth. Pro tip: add those chili flakes into your soups and rice dishes for extra flavoring and a slight kick. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a long time, but I manage to always come when they're closed! I was finally able to come for dinner a couple nights ago. I got the seafood udon because it was a cold winter night and it seemed like a popular item here. The udon itself was very well made, but this entree is the reason why I deducted a star. The broth was extremely salty and lacked the refreshing taste as you're drinking the soup. The mushrooms were also overly sweet like it was left in some sweet soy sauce for a very long time. I actually couldn't continue to eat this because it was overly salty and sweet at the same time. My boyfriend got the Niku Don Beef Bowl combo that comes with a salad and your choice of soba or udon. He opted for the cold soba noodles. This was the best choice ever. If we had not gotten this combo, we probably won't be coming back to this restaurant in the future. But this dish really saved the day. The beef was very well made and went perfectly with the white rice since the beef was so flavorful and glazed in teriyaki sauce. The cold soba noodles were super refreshing and clean, so we saved it for last to cleanse our palettes. I would definitely come back in the summer for some cold soba noodles! read more

I finally got a chance to try Taiko after showing up once when they were closed. Their menu says they specialize in soba and udon noodles so those were the two items to try. I ordered a Niku don combo with cold soba noodles, and a hot seafood udon. Starting off, ill say I expected the proportions to be pretty small here but was pleasantly surprised by how much food I got and I was very filled by the end of the meal. Strangely, I liked the udon the least despite that being what I normally would enjoy the most. The udon itself was cooked well. The noodles were tender and chewy, but the broth and toppings were a little off to me and just didn't flow well. The Niku don beef bowl was actually very good and my favorite part of the meal. I expected a typical yoshinoya like bowl but the quality of beef, sauce, and rice just made it delicious. Topped the meal off with some refreshing soba noodles and I was very satisfied. read more

This review is for service. How things change. If you see my review from six years ago, you'd know I've been loyal to this shop for 10+ years. We chose to have lunch on a Sunday and we sat outside as usual. We waited 10 minutes after being sat by the host. I got up and asked if we have a server and could we get some water. No server appeared for another 10 minutes. Mind you, this is a tiny place. I walked back in and they didn't know/forgot we were out there despite many other tables being occupied outside. I asked if I should just place my order with the hostess or just call it in. She took the order. I asked if we could get our hot green tea right away since it was 55 degrees. Five minutes later, the hostess emerged from the kitchen with two iced green teas! That was it. After about 35 minutes we packed up and left. No water, no server, we ordered at the host stand and ultimately no food. We enjoy stopping in 1-2x month but will rethink even going back. read more

One of the only places in LA where you can get a genuine SOBA soup ( noodles made out of buckwheat). It's absolutely delicious when prepared in a traditional fish broth. I get mine with wakame seaweed and their signature mountain vegetables. The prices are on point and the staff is friendly.
