But the half star is just for something off with the service...it wasn't bad, but I think it's probably just a cultural thing...it was a little rushed initially with the ordering process. My friend and I ordered an appetizer and also a naan that was not on the menu but that they had ordered before and they were able to make it - but not this time. Also while we were talking and maybe apparently taking too much time to order entrees the server seemed a little quick/abrupt with us to get our orders in, but also during/after our meal, just the feeling of being rushed but we didn't let that impact how much time we spent at the table. (Note, there were very few people dining and it was late afternoon/early evening, so not that they were trying to close)... Anyway, the Taj Special app was really good! The food was quite different from what's shown and priced on the website. We placed our order at 11:31 AM, requesting lunch, but were charged dinner pricing. When we inquired, we were told they were serving dinner. We ordered chicken curry, butter chicken, and tikka masala. Each dish came with only about 8 small pieces of chicken, with no naan and a small portion of rice, which didn't match the description or presentation online. This place is my go-to for Indian eats. Not too often do you find an AYCE Indian buffet that includes many favorites and fresh made naan. Everything always looks fresh. All this includes a dessert too. Service is adequate as you're doing most of the service. The staff is friendly and quick to answer questions about the food. The place is decorated with lots of Indian pictures and other artwork. Parking is usually plentiful but it does share the parking lot with dozens of other businesses in the plaza. read more

Easily the best or one of the very best Indian restaurants in Tampa. After multiple visits, we've had nothing but a pleasurable experience every single time. The wide menu (and excellent authentic beer options) will suit anyone's palate and each dish can be customized as to spice level. Remember to be a bit patient as the dishes are cooked to order. Solid restaurant to go to for Indian food. Might be one of the few places where lunch specials are also available on the weekend. And I have to say, such a great deal! You get an entree, naan bread, rice, and an appetizer. The portion sizes are pretty good for the lunch special as well. As for flavor, the curry chicken I got was solid. Good balance of savory and spicy without being overwhelming. Nice tender chunks of chicken as well. However, just be aware that service can be kind of slow. If you eat here expect to spend 30-40 dollars on one meal and some naan. I literally got chicken korma and garlic naan and spent $33 all together with tax and tip. THAT ABSOLUTELY INSANE. This is not inflation just straight up greed. I would have been ok with the price if I could've at least got two meals from it but nope the portions are average. After recently learning that I enjoy Indian food, a friend and I have begun trying local Indian restaurants. I was really impressed with Taj Indian. When I walked in I was immediately greeted by someone and told to sit where I liked. The first impression you get is the wonderful decor. While not being overdone, you feel like you've entered a cozy, private place. The walls are decorated in beautiful Indian artwork and wood. The lighting is dim, but bright enough to see well. And the Indian music is playing at exactly the right volume to create the right mood without overwhelming the senses. There is even a lovely scent to the place that just makes it even more lovely. We were there for lunch, and I was really pleased with the range of foods on the menu. A nice little lunch menu offered a nice variety of items at a really nice price point. Additionally, their normal menu is huge, with tons of options for vegetarian, beef, chicken, lamb, and even goat. I tried the butter lamb (instead of chicken), and thought it was fantastic. I've only had butter chicken two other times, but this was the best I've had so far. We were also given vegetable samosas before our meal, which were absolutely delightful. They come with some sort of green sauce that's probably one of my favorite things now. The one thing I will say is that they only have three heat levels: mild, medium, and hot, and they seem to lean toward mild. If you prefer a more spicy dish, opt for hot. All in all, I thought it was a great experience, and I'm really looking forward to trying something different on my next visit. read more

We come here pretty often, due to it being close to work. The foods good, and I think the portions are nice size. However make sure you check your receipt before you just toss a card down to pay!!! We went at lunch and we let them know we wanted the lunch special (15$, good portions) however went we got the receipt we were charged for each item individually so the total was over 60$ for the smaller portion sizes. I got garlic nan which is 5$ when ordered on its own. While on the lunch menu is says it's only a dollar uncharge, I would get it if the stuff was special but it's regular nan with just garlic and butter tossed on it. When we asked about seeing a menu (to see if the prices had changed) they suddenly gave us a new receipt with the regular lunch special prices on it. Which lets us know they did that hoping we would just toss down a card. It was a new waitress instead of the usual ones so maybe she thought it would work since she's never seen us before. The female owner sat us. Her husband cooked our meals. When our orders were taken, we were immediately asked about the spice level we wanted. (Our meals were received exactly as ordered.) The Vegetable Samosa (2 pieces @ $4.95) was very good. There are 9 types of Naan available here. We sampled the Garlic Naan ($3.95) & the Kasmire Naan ($4.25), the latter which consists of dry fruit & coconut. (It had a very nice & mild flavor.) My date's Vegetable Korma ($13.95) was very good, & my Goat Korma ($16.95) was excellent-- the most tender goat I've eaten @ any restaurant. The white rice that accompanied both entrees was fine. This restaurant offers many vegetarian dishes, as well as chicken, lamb, goat, fish, shrimp, lobster, & tandoori entrees. (I'm quite sure my list is incomplete.) Service was excellent. We ate an early lunch at noon; the restaurant was not busy. Prices are a little higher here than I've found @ similar quality Indian restaurants, but not high enough to deter me from returning. The interior appeared clean. It's ambiance is slightly more upscale than nearby Indian restaurants. This restaurant is open 7 days weekly & offers weekend buffets. We ordered catering from Taj for my mom's 60th birthday and couldn't be happier. The ordering process was easy and we were able to order from both the catering menu and what we wanted from the regular menu. Ramesh worked with me directly and he was able to lead us through the perfect amount of food for the number of guests. They offer delivery for catering services for an additional fee. We opted to pick up and it was nicely packaged for us to transport. We were happy with just about everything. - Samosa chaat was given with individually packaged items and full samosas on the side so it won't get soggy. - steamed idli and sambar. This was the only South Indian offering (can't make fresh dosas) so if you're looking for South Indian food this is not the place to go. North Indian though is wonderful - paneer butter masala, always a crowd favorite - okra was the only thing that was too oily and full of garam masala - navratan Korma Prices were fair and averaged out to about $20/person for all this food. The Basics: Taj has been an Indian restaurant staple in the New Tampa area for years. I have tried many Indian food restaurants over the years and this has always remained the very best. The food is high quality and always amazing. Things I like: I used to dine in at Taj all the time, but last night I got a bunch of items to go. It was all fresh, delicious, and the best of those particular items I have ever tried. We ordered: Chicken Tikka Masala, Tandoori Chicken, Vegetable Samosas, Chicken Pakoras, Nan, Garlic Nan, Alu Gobi Masala, Channa Masala, and Lamb Vindaloo. We certainly ordered a lot of food! I would suggest the above items if you are interested in Indian food but don't know what to order for your first time. It was all delicious! Things I didn't like: Nothing! And when we asked the server where the marble came from ( maybe they dropped their necklace while cooking) he couldn't even explain it. Gross. When the food was serve , instead of bringing out the food in separate trays, the server stacked the rice on top of the other rice , stacked the bread on the other tray of bread. this review is mainly about the service. honestly most of the indian food all tastes the same and this again is just decent mediocre indian food (coming from and indian person) however the service is actually horrible. we walked in and the server from across the dining area asked us how many and pointed to a table. then she proceeded to not saying anything or greet us as she poured us water. when taking our order she had one airpod in and then messed up the order because she wasnt paying attention. we asked for more papad during appetizers and then she BRINGS IT OUT IN HER HANDS. just touching the food with her bare hands so unhygienic and we had to ask her to bring it on a plate. then the food runner brought out a dish that we didn't order and just the two of them were working the dining area, again relatively small. and my parents decided to kindly talk to the food runner and explain their thoughts on the service in a really nice manner to help them. especially in the case of having different types of communities come to the restaurant and try indian food, you want to have a hygenic and enthusiastic customer service. really wish management would get involved by now as i've read other reviews about the service read more

Then they came over and sat us but my question is, why not sit us when we walked in or at least say welcome, sit where you like. We sat down, it was a party of four, he only served 2 glasses of water and did not bother to introduce himself or bring the other 2 glasses. Like come on? You see 4 of us so I had to flag him down and ask for the other 2 glasses and he was so dry about it. Then we ordered and the food was so dry. Honestly, I was very disappointed. Several years ago my wife & I ate at Taj & it was excellent. We found ourselves near USF today & were excited to return. I'm not sure what happened, but we experienced a marked decline in flavor & quality. There were many great-sounding dishes to try. Most of the trays however were full of sauce, but were lacking the chicken or other solid items normally found in the dishes. Some of the flavors were good, but some were dull & even salty. I've never had Indian food before where I could ever discern salt. Usually I discern brilliantly flavored spices & herbs. The lunch buffet was $12 per person. The service is why I didn't go with 5 stars. He is a beautiful, calm, and attentive person. He use to bring me food that was actually fresh and vibrant. Used to love this place, but the last experience has really ruined it for me. We called in an order and picked it up. Told receipt was in the bag. Got home and one of the meals was missing. So we called back and were told to come pick up what was missing by the manager. By the time we were able to get back, it was closed. But that was a blessing, because my meal (which made it into the bag) must not have been cooked all the way through and I ended up with food poisoning. When we went back the next day and asked to just get a refund on the entire order, were told they wouldn't without a physical receipt (despite there being a credit card transaction). A receipt they said was in the bag but wasn't. And they wouldn't even refund the food they didn't include in the bag the first time. The food is usually wonderful, but not being able to trust that we'll get what we pay for (or may get sick from it) is too big a risk when money is tight. I understand mistakes are made, but how a company handles those mistakes is what's important.
