Taka's grill (Japanese cuisine & sushi) is a great little spot to sit and eat!! Usually it's busy and full which I noticed when it was past 6pm but I went on my last day at Fort Bragg which was on a Tuesday and around noon for some lunch. It wasn't so busy as we were the first ones there. The staff are so nice and kind. We took a seat where we wanted to considering it wasn't so busy. If you don't know much about Asian cuisine or sushi you should ask questions, which I did, I ordered pork gyoza which I always enjoy anywhere I go and here at Taka's it did not disappoint!! I also got some noodles that came with chicken and veggies with a side of white rice and chicken (doesn't come with the order). My girlfriend and I are also fans of sushi so she ordered two different sushi rolls. FRESHEST SUSHI I have ever had anywhere. The sushi was amazing and definitely recommended this place to anybody who loves Asian cuisine. read more

I love this place. I've been coming here for literally decades and they have always had wonderful food and awesome service. My current favorite is the Beef Curry. Can't speak about the sushi because I only have gotten a couple of things and that was last year. Ordered takeout today and had to wait because of the dinner rush. I was very disappointed in this restaurant. First the service was mediocre at best. It was slow, the waitress couldn't really explain the difference on the special, i had to go to the register to get my check. My wife and i both ordered the special bento only with two different toppings. Both toppings took away from the local cod. The tempura was not light but doughy and the rice was cool. We're in town for a three day holiday weekend. Decided to try this place for Sunday lunch. It was just ok, not outstanding; it was not overpriced, just ok. My husband enjoys sushi, I on the other hand do not, but sushi restaurants usually have something on the menu that I can eat. Before I continue, I'd like to say that this place is not very fancy or pretty, but remember, this is Fort Bragg. We sat in the glassed-in patio area. I ordered grilled yellowfin with seasonal vegetables, miso soup and rice, my husband had the basic rainbow roll and unachi sauce. While the miso soup arrived promptly, the rest of the service was slow. After about 15 minutes my husband's sushi arrived. My meal took much longer and frankly, I was seconds away from giving up and calling it a day. My husband is very polite and after he was half-way finished eating he stopped and waited for my food to arrive. He would have been completely done eating by the time my food arrived. The sushi was good but not outstanding. For the price, the yellowfin was a very large portion, but it should have been marinated in something with flavor before being placed on the grill. With no no seasoning, it ended up dry, flavorless and slightly overcooked with the vegetables slightly undercooked and almost cold. It had lots of bones in it and I didn't finish eating because I was disappointed. Let's just say this experience is exactly why we don't go out to eat very much. My husband would have made the yellowtail in the manner it rightfully deserved. read more

This place is pretty good. I'm in the area every couple of weeks, and I always eat here. I've ordered the beef terriyaki, which is just OK flavor-wise, but the salad that came with it was super fresh. I recommend cooked items. Their udon is surprisingly GREAT....it's actually some of the best, and I've had my share of udon in the bay area. Order the shrimp tempura udon with veggies (which are carrots and broccoli, but again - extremely fresh). I've also had the tempura dinner box, which is tasty and has generous portions. If you want sashimi, I would stick with just the salmon. Everything else is just average, including the uni (which I was surprised they even had). All in all, this place is decent for cooked items, and the staff is genuinely nice. There aren't a lot of options in this area (especially for japanese food). If you have some time (it gets packed during lunch/dinner hours), get the udon! they take cc, now including AMEX. they sell sake and beer. read more

This is my second time in Ft. Bragg and I've come to Taka's on both occasions. The sushi here is excellent and I love that they have the option to have their rolls made with soy wrap ($1.30 extra). The ambiance is casual and has a nice local vibe and the folks working here are super nice. But the star of the show is the excellent sushi. The seared ahi roll is a new favorite. The roll selection wasn't very wide, but the rolls were very good, and the fish was fresh. The owner looked to have been a sushi chef for a long time, and most of what he was doing was from muscle memory, a sign of a seasoned veteran of the craft. All in all, a very enjoyable experience. read more

(So I have found) Off The Hook wasn't open so my obvious choice - Taka's It served it's purpose and did the trick, but I wasn't overly impressed. The waitress was nice the place was clean and the food was good. There is an outdoor patio that will be great for the summer weather, and in the winter it's heated and kind of sealed for indoor dining. Taka's is pretty cheap, and the portions were decent. Sushi is not impressive, which I had expected for this area. The presentation is seriously lacking and the portions are not worth the price. However, the fish is fresh enough to be edible as sashimi. This place is an example of grossly low standards as a result of being one of just two sushi restaurants around. Customer satisfaction is not a priority and for that matter neither is food quality and presentation. Based on previous reviews Taka sets this order of operation. Five of us for dinner. Three hot plates come out after a reasonable wait. TWENTY MINUTES LATER, the rolls for my friend came out and were not what she ordered. TEN MINUTES LATER my sashimi comes out. My friends had already long finished their meals. No rhyme or reason for this; sashimi should be the easiest and quickest plate to put together. Plates should never be staggered with 30 min between the first and last customer served. When I asked to have our sushi comped the server nervously acknowledged the poor pace and said she would try. The manager came out and tried to argue that these wait times are normal and that she could at best cut the price in half for the sushi plates. In the end the manager didn't charge us for two of the sushi plates. Fine. The attitude from the manager though can't turn this patron's impression around. Service: incompetent, slow, embarrassing. Staff was nice enough to make add the egg despite not having that request before (hard-broiled egg is common in ramen). Broth was delicious however the pork was dry and lacked any flavor. This is a two and a half star place. The prices are very reasonable for the quality you are getting. It's certainly not my first choice for Sushi in Fort Bragg anymore. I had several pieces of Nigiri and a few California rolls with topping rolls. Nothing was outstanding but nothing was terrible either. My friend had the ramen and it looked and tasted OK. The service was good but I will not be going back anytime soon. The fried food came out super duper fast. So if you are hungry and in a hurry get something fried. As a special treat we did get to experience the holiday decorations which I give an A+. My personal favorite was the christmas tablecloth with bears in christmas sweaters and snowflakes. I have been to this place many times. First off extremely slow. Second portion sizes for the money are insulting! That's my biggest gripe. We ordered our boy sautéed shrimp. In a small dish came 6 cooked sautéed shrimp, each the size of a nickel (a LA carte) and the owners charged us $7.00.....no rice no soup nothing. I'm a huge sushi fan. I've been all over the US and normally sushi bars have a basic standard. This one operates on rules all on its own(not to its benefit ). Fort bragg has very little as far as food options go. The flavor of the food is good, but you are not normally full when you leave, and you've definitely spent all your money and time. Also the presentation of your meal is mediocre, no art of care involved at all. The restaurant is ok, but the back patio which they've redone (thank goodness ) has you sitting on cheap outside plastic tables and chairs. I wouldn't even put those in the back yard of a rental unit. For the price of their food, they could make you feel a little more taken care of. Also you have to ask for EVERYTHING! More water pls, more ginger pls, more tea pls, can I have my soup pls can I have my check please, can I have a togo container pls....then that takes another 10 mins. It's really hard to enjoy an easy family meal flow here. When everyone is missing something to continue enjoying their meal all together. I've lived in the area 14 years, used to work right next door at the salon. I've been here many times and finally had the shrimp experience which I mentioned above which was just over the top. read more

Ordered the Taka Roll, Salmon Roll & 1 Chicken Teriyaki Bento and 1 Beef Teriyaki Bento. I guess I should state that we were there for lunch & Taka was working the Sushi Bar (since that seems to be a concern thru other reviews). I'm giving 2nd star just for the rolls - my Taka Roll and the California Rolls in the Bento were DELISH. And I'm giving the 3rd star because our server was probably the nicest, sweetest, most attentive waitress I've ever had. Truly, she was a doll. As for our Bento's - if I was basing this review solely on that, I'd probably only give 2 stars total... the rice was too dry & I see why people think that the teriyaki dishes have no teriyaki, the meat is cooked on the grill dry and then the teriyaki is drizzled on right before serving (I watched this happen, so that's how I know how it's done there) and so what happens is, the meat is left very dry (both chicken & beef) & the sauce just sits at the bottom of the dish, so there is little to no flavor. I will give extra props to our delightful waitress for bringing us complimentary green tea, which was a very nice touch in the middle of the rainstorm that was going on outside. read more

I'll just start by saying the ONLY reason id give them the second star is because the miso soup (tofu was strange), the tempura veggies and the sushi roll were good. Host was incredibly rude, we walked in and he promptly shoved the menus at us and barked "anywhere". Waitress came after about 5 min to get our order but we weren't quite ready yet so she grabbed our drinks, then when we were ready we stacked the menus at the end of the table to indicate we were ready. After a while she comes back to take our order, the host brings out our food and we ask for two additional plates (we were sharing) they were covered in something sticky and when I asked for new plates she acted like it was an inconvenience and that was the last time she came to the table. I got a chicken teriyaki box the ca roll and rice were good but the cucumber salad was just cucumber and sesame seeds and the chicken was like chewing on a burnt dried out flavorless cork that had been sitting in a warmer for an hour. My sister got pork fried rice and it was also flavorless. Again caterpillar roll, miso soup and tempura veggies were good. After not being checked on once the host dropped our check off, when I told him we couldn't eat the chicken and I was more then willing to pay for the rice and sushi that came with it (because we did eat it). He was super rude and snatched the ticket up and got annoyed with us and changed the ticket. I'll give the waitress the benefit of the doubt because we all have bad days but everything else was just disappointing. read more

Oh, and no chirachi or anything like it on the menu. Again, some of the fish wasn't too bad (meaning edible) but the log of fake frozen crab in the middle of the rainbow roll kind of killed it. The best part of the meal was the water...the food was edible, barely. -teriyaki chicken dinner=burned chicken with no flavor, overcooked rice, & salad dressed in almost pure vinegar. -pan fried noodles with beef & vegetables= mushy top ramen noodles(actually top ramen tastes better), tough flavorless beef, and some overcooked carrots & huge chunks of slimy cabbage. We really enjoyed eating here when Taka was running the place. In the past few years he has been turning it over to his family and they do not seem to have the same care and quality that he did. Our last experience we sat around for almost an hour and our food didn't turn up and the grill cook was eating while he was cooking. Their's was only veggie tempura for the bento so it was a bummer not to have a shrimp with it especially to try since this was my first time there.
