Traveling from Vancouver, BC. As growing up in Japan, suddenly had a very strong craving for sushi while staying at Fort Bragg on the way back to Canada. Found this gem in Yelp. The restaurant's decoration wasn't very Japanese and since none of the customers or the servers were Asians, I was not expecting much in the beginning. BUT the sushi was GREAT. My husband I ordered uni, yellow tail, salmon etc nigiri sushi beside some rolls. Fish was all very fresh, Uni was super sweet, and the sushi rice was made perfectly. The owner chef is a Japanese man, a very nice man. And the staff members were very sweet too. We were both very happy that we noticed some recent good reviews and took a chance! In a town where the culinary landscape has variety but not as much depth and pow wow as a metropolitan area with regards to non localized type fare, one has to adjust expectations accordingly when satiating an appetite that graviates towards Asian cuisine. Yeah I'm talkin' bout yours truly. I've M$G flowing through my veins, it is hard to stay in this area for 8 days and not have any average Asian fare. In Mendocino County, Fort Bragg is just 20 mins north of Mendocino Village. While there are lots of great higher end dining establishments all around, all the Asian/ethnic food places (not that many of them actually) are in Fort Bragg proper. On the inevitable topic of $ushi, travelers have but four-ish choices in town. Two of them are New Buffet and Asian Buffet, and let's just say that those types of places would make Kome, Moonstar, Hokkaido Seafood Buffet, and their competition in the SF Bay Area seem like cream of the crop. Off The Hook is Korean owned, which leaves Taka's as the last hope. As you may have guessed, it's mostly a teriyaki, bento/combo meal set, tempura, and funny inside out rolls world in here. The chef, who I presume is owner Taka-san, is primarily stationed behind the sushi bar. The rest of his staff handles other kitchen duties. From the side (only), he does bear a very striking resemblance to Ohsamu Sugiyama (Sam) of Sushi Sam's...unfortunately the resemblance does not carry over to the food. All meals ordered (except noodle soups like udon) come with a small bowl of miso soup that has seaweed (not the nori kind) and tofu inside....with a Chinese soup spoon. Hey it's Fort Bragg! With regards to the sushi lineup, should you give in to temptation to go to the Dark Side (I can even hear The Emperor taunt you.... "I can FEEL your HUNGER, it gives you FOCUS!") the neta lineup for nigiri is very bare bones basic. If you are lucky they will have uni, aji, ankimo, and kanpachi (the most exotic items). What's surprisingly absent is local Mendocino uni (Taka's supposedly has it in a tray, but I cannot for the life of me, tell) or local red abalone. Near the sushi bar is a sign for uhmm... "omakase", better suited for locals. From multiple visits: Oyakodon - listed as a special item. A small modest donburi, where the egg was not runny/smooth (quarter cooked scrambly egg tends to scare a lot of people) and the oyako sauce leaned towards the sweet side. The chicken was basically grilled and a tad bit dry (they would have otherwise used the same for teriyaki chicken). Beef sukiyaki (specials item) - At $15.50 I was expecting something bigger for a nabe (na-beh). It was pitifully small portioned, and while many other restaurants in SF Bay Area would pile up the cheaper vegetables with sukiyaki sauce/broth, the level / height of broth was below the contents. The sukiyaki beef, instead of thinly sliced marbled goodness, were chunky slices of either chuck or flank (re: more chewy). Some spinach, tofu, some cabbage, thicker "glass noodles", a few slivers of shitake and that was it. Vegetable udon - the udon broth was not bad, but mostly on the sweet side. Udon was good....vegetables were broccoli and carrots. A safe kids option. Zaru soba (cold) with vegetable tempura - probably the best thing on the menu that I was pretty pleased with, even though the soba was frozen, but cooked right. Lunch nigiri combo - At $15++ it comes with California roll, "tuna roll" (not tekka maki, but inside out tuna roll), and two pc each of maguro, hamachi, and salmon. The good thing is that the fish were sliced to order, unlike places that use presliced fish (e.g the late Sushi Nozawa). The cuts were at random, a piece looking almost like trapezoid. The rice had mild vinegaring at least. Chirashi (custom order during dinner) - ~ $17... Look at the photo. The amount of sushi rice in the chirashi was DISMAL, imagine a 1/3 to 1/2 the amount of what you would get in SF Bay Area. C'mon it's just rice! Contents: ikura....clumpy overly salted like fish bait. Saba was SF Bay Area sushi buffet quality, same for tamago. Uni was excellent, white fish/hamachi ok, unagi was not so great. Perfectly fine for Fort Bragg. Again lower your expectations and you might be ok. Might be safer to come in for tonkatsu meal set, or curry rice (and even then, set expectations for those accordingly). Want to feel better? Walk a few steps next door and wash it down with Cowlick's Ice Cream. read more

I was at the movies around the corner and my family was hungry for food the theatre didn't have. I called them and said I would leave the movie I really wanted to see and miss some to feed the family. I thought at first it was $9.99 for a bowl because when you look on Google it says that the bowls are that price. I brought that up on the phone after she told me the price and she gave me attitude and says "well they are $14.99. You can take it or leave it" and gives me and option with attitude. I said "that's fine, I just didn't know since the pic stated otherwise" and continued to purchase. I rush there and rush back so I didn't miss a lot of the movie. I get inside and both of the teriyaki salmon bowls and the chicken teriyaki were dry and had no sauce on them. We even looked at the rice to see if it was under it or something since that would be easy to see and it was nothing. I call them and told them the situation because my family didn't like it either and my daughter eats anything. They said that was fine and to come another day and the whole meal would be free. I came all the way back from Willits and after I ordered the lady that told me it would be free came out to confront us and LIED to me in front of my family telling me she said only one. I told her right then and there "I can look you in the eye and tell you you told me all three would be free and that's what we talked about last night". She broke eye contact completely and said "that's all I'm going to tell you now". I'm very big on being real to people and not lying. It's never worth a $45 meal. So I didn't get food and paid for a bowl for my daughter and mrs. And called it a day. Good miso soup! But the other bowls are dry. read more

The food tasted great! The establishment, the service, and the prices could be better. I waited for quite some time to get a spicy tuna roll and salmon nigiri (2 pcs). The size of the roll was about 2/3 the size of what Is normally served in other places - both in number of pieces (6 vs 8) and its contents, skimpy on both the meat and the rice, and it looked like it may have been made by an 8-yr old. The server dropped off my food, checked in on me once, and only saw her again when I approached the register to pay (perhaps that is standard practice at this establishment?). The table was wiped down, but the plastic tablecloth was well used as it had grime and stains embedded, looked and felt quite gross. read more

Came in for lunch on a Tues 6/26 & sat in the patio area which was nice. First time in Fort Bragg and this was the first restaurant we stopped in. I've been to many Japanese restaurants and this one was about the same as many of the others. I ordered the Ume which comes with a little bit of everything. It was okay but thought it was a bit expensive for what I got. My daughter ordered the chicken tonkatsu box which was a good size portion and she said it was really good. The reason we chose Taka's Grill over Off the Hook Sushi b/c we saw a "we serve fried chicken" sign at the other place. Then again maybe would of like Ft Bragg fried chicken?? Taka was pretty full when we got there. We sat in the front of the kitchen so you can see all the action. There were no sushi bars here nor Asian chefs. I didn't mind as long as the food was good but that wasn't the case. We ordered: - Grilled mackerel (1*)...where's the fish? It's just a fillet?!?!? - Veggie Udon (2*)...bland - Yellowtail collar (3*) - Tempura (3*) - Teriyaki Chicken (2*) ....dried out Food took forever to come. Another amazingly delicious visit!! Had the spicy tuna biscuit (10 Stars) the flavors & spices are beyond exquisite, also had the spicy tuna tempura roll. My 2nd favorite which is seriously heavenly and full of flavor. My husband had the fried salmon roll (I think that's what it was called, but he said the spices were incredible and although it was chewy he still loved it. I am not a fan of anything chewy or salmon so I did not try it. We could eat the spicy tuna biscuits all day as they are very tiny compared to our first couple visits. These really should be highlighted on the menu. Of all my travels it's rare to find items such as this besides in Los Angeles at KatsuYa!! This is the best sushi place ever. I went to many places in the Bay Area already, none can compare to this small sushi bar at this remote city ever so up North. The ingredients are top notch. Uni is unbeatable, so fresh, so good. I heard from other dinners that fishes are caught local. Chef Taka is very friendly (He is very concentrated so just initiated conversation). The staffs are also friendly. We ordered hamachi belly, uni, amaebi, ankimo, and eel. Chef even let us sample the new item: opah (moon fish) sushi. Every bite is worth it!! 5/5 stars. Just finished a To go order from this place. The sushi was okay. I called in because they did not include my spider roll. I have had spider rolls since the 90's, so I know what one is. When I called in, the person told me if I came in they would give me one. When I got there they decided to disagree with me and say that "their" version of a spider roll is different. So they did not give me a replacement roll and decided to argue with me instead. I left after driving back without my roll. I cannot believe I tipped them on a to to go order!!! What bad service. I will never ever go there again! If you order to go be sure to check your order. These guys are jerks if there is an issue!!! read more

Stopped in for dinner. Very friendly service. She had a bowl of Ramen, I had the special which was a fried rice dish with fish and shrimp. Both dishes were big, you will not go home hungry here. This afternoon, I revisited Taka's Grill. I am a local resident, but have failed to enjoy this restaurant over last couple of years. I ordered the dinner menu's California Roll plus extra Wasabi and also ordered the Shrimp & Vegetable Tempura that comes with rice and Miso soup. Oh my goodness - the food & the service was stupendous. The CA roll was perfecto! The extra Wasabi was put to good use causing my eyes to flow with tears while the Wasabi cleared my sinuses. The Shrimp & Vegetable tempura was fresh and crispy. Additionally, the tempura dip was excellent. The white rice was perfectly starchy for using chop-sticks. I plan on going back, tomorrow, to relive this Japanese Cuisine ambrosia. To be honest - My one complaint is that the Miso soup could have been a lot hotter in temp - I showed up right at dinner-time opening and was delivered lukewarm Miso soup. read more

We came on the recommendation of the B&B we were staying at, Glendeven Inn in Little River, that Taka's had the freshest uni. They were spot on-- we were quite full already but had to come by to try after we rode the Skunk Train, and we were not disappointed. We ordered just one order the uni nigiri (priced at $7, quite reasonable), and an order of the fried octopus appetizer since it was a special. The uni was so fresh and tasted exactly like the briny ocean, and the octopus well fried (we even watched it being done since we sat at the sushi bar). Would recommend for the uni in particular. Not sure if it is better to have a reservation during peak hours (we came around 1pm on a weekday), but definitely should check this place out if you're in the area. read more

Extremely fresh, excellent sushi and sashimi is served here. As one member of our dining group commented, this was the best quality sushi and sashimi he has enjoyed since living in Los Angeles. Tempura was light and delicious, chicken teriyaki was outstanding. If we lived closer, we would be regular customers here. The miso soup even had exceptional depth. The sashimi was a little too cold which tells me they may hedge on the side of holding more fish than less, but it was fine. Taka's grill (Japanese cuisine & sushi) is a great little spot to sit and eat!! Usually it's busy and full which I noticed when it was past 6pm but I went on my last day at Fort Bragg which was on a Tuesday and around noon for some lunch. It wasn't so busy as we were the first ones there. The staff are so nice and kind. We took a seat where we wanted to considering it wasn't so busy. If you don't know much about Asian cuisine or sushi you should ask questions, which I did, I ordered pork gyoza which I always enjoy anywhere I go and here at Taka's it did not disappoint!! I also got some noodles that came with chicken and veggies with a side of white rice and chicken (doesn't come with the order). My girlfriend and I are also fans of sushi so she ordered two different sushi rolls. FRESHEST SUSHI I have ever had anywhere.
