Went with my family- nearly 15 of us. All sorts of sushi, drinks, appetizers, even A meal for my three-year-old. The server was on top of everything, very polite, I knew what she was talking about. The sushi was fresh and delicious, the chicken teriyaki was quite tasty, and the unique menu assortment all added to a very tasty meal. This place reminds me of the Japanese restaurants I grew up back in San Jose during the 60 and 70's. I call the food here home style cooking like my mother made. We had the hot soba noodles with chicken, a combo chicken/tempura and the pork and vegie gyoza (wasn't in the mood for sushi but it looked good). Everything was prepared like it should. Service was excellent. Our waitress had one heck of a smile and a "happy" personality. My daughter and I liked her. Food was served hot and she checked in with us. The place was packed (Sunday) and orders seems to flow well. We sat near the kitchen so I could see the staff and chef who had a very good pace going. When visiting Fort Bragg we will come by again. Worst place to eat Japanese food. Would not even say it is Japanese. My other half ordered the beef teriyaki bowl combo and it was like they put a lot of shoyu & black pepper. I ordered the sukiyaki & it tasted like straight shoyu. We also ordered a dragon roll & rainbow roll and we could barely stomach trying one of each. Presentation was horrible. Kitchen looked dirty. We choose this place over the other sushi place because it's right next to Cowlick's. The place is cramped with little seating and there is another room, kind of a indoor/outdoor area. The kitchen area is odd. The place was crowded as it was in the middle of spring break. Some locals walked in then walked out as one of them said "We come here all the time, it's too busy." The sushi rolls were good but, puny and didn't have much rice. I was able to see seaweed through the rice. The miso was good, it had kinda large seaweed chunks in it. We also had one of their specials a tuna, jalapeño, fired thing. I loved it, she hated it. It took forever to get our food. The one waitress was working as hard as she could but, couldn't keep up. I took the advice of other reviewers and got the hamachi belly. It was amazing though small. I also ordered the salmon yakisoba with wild salmon. The vegetables were cooked to a perfect al dente with the noodles being lihhtly sweet. It was a great dining experience. read more

I have never given a 1 Star review, BUT during our exceptionally long wait for our food, we were seated at the sushi bar and watched one of the line cooks eat a couple orange slices and spit a mouthful of slobbery mush into his gloved hand while preparing food. He did not change his glove. The food handling by the waitstaff looked a little sketchy as well, with raw sushi being placed on order paper instead plates. cute place, especially on their patio, but slow; even though the place was less than half full we had to chase down a waitress to put in our order, and over 35 mins after we arrived we still hadn't seen anything but extremely light miso soup and weak (rice?) tea. hamachi kama finally arrived and was tasty, but for some reason rolls and nigiri arrived 10 & 15 mins later. rolls were edible, but small and sloppily prepared and presented, rice was not the best, and we were surprised to find cucumber in the California Roll (it's not just that this is a cheap filler, it's that my dining partner is allergic!). nigiri and hamachi kama were both quite good; good enough that we might come back if we need to scratch the sushi itch, but would overall have to give this place just a B-. read more

Wow wow wow worst Japanese food ever. My first time given a one star. Service: This is the worst part ever. Nobody takes care of us after we seated there for 10 minutes, it seems that if we don't take initiative to say something. They will forget our existence. So rude, isn't it? We came here for eating not for being ignored. Well during our waiting for our food (which is extremely long around 25 minutes for a fried rice)(R u kidding me? At that moment only 8 customers are in the restaurant). The server never ask our feeling and THE WORST THING we find is that she might be a racist. She asked white consumers feeling like"how is your food"" Is everything okay?" But ignored us directly. By the way, she took away our soup even we didn't finish it without an ask. As an Asian I am sure that I didn't make any trouble and I am not a complaint people. If you are reading this review, you know that's you. Because I have never seen in my life that a sever can be so rude and unprofessional. Food: the food is okay. But overpriced. After you guys have tried them, you know what I am talking about.  I am 100% sure and responsible for my review. First time in my life writing such a long one, uhh! read more

Coming from the SF Bay Area, I might be expecting too much for the quality and authenticity of Japanese food in the Fort Bragg area. Then again, when I'm paying same or higher prices for assumingly same food, why wouldn't I expect as much? When the food finally arrived, we were surprised by the mangled look of the avocado roll and albacore sushi roll. Honestly my daughter's first attempt at making rolls at home looked better. the taste did not make up for the look either. This small restaurant is our favorite (since Mendo Bistro closed). They have very tasty food and are reasonably priced.The tempura is light and crispy, the noodle dishes are hearty (udon - yum!), and the teriyaki dishes are delish. One of my favorite meals is the hamachi kama (yellowtail collar) - it's making my mouth water just thinking about it. They have a good selection of sushi and will accommodate special orders. Their servers are attentive and friendly and the patio dining is relaxing. We've only ordered take out since the pandemic, and are looking forward to eating in again. read more

There aren't many sushi options in the Fort Bragg area, so I'm thankful I can count on Taka's to provide solid customer service and fresh, tasty sushi time and time again. The menu is pretty standard/straightforward, but they will accommodate requests for special rolls, and for the most part everything is well-executed. The only thing that I have ever found disappointing was the veggie udon because the only veggies to be found were broccoli and carrots, so the whole dish was pretty lackluster; the pork ramen, on the other hand, is DELICIOUS. My wife, toddler, and I were on a road trip and mobile Yelp told us that Off the Hook sushi was amazing. So off we went, my toddler chanting "sushi, sushi sushi", and found it closed. I think it was Monday at dinnertime. So we looked for more sushi in the area (Toddler: "sushi, sushi, sushi") and my wife refused to go to Taka's Grill because Yelp said it was "scary". And I shared my Yelp theory with her: "People on Yelp really care about food and are probably going to be more sensitive than average people. Let's try." So we went in, everyone except the toddler concerned about the quality we were about to experience, and we were very pleasantly surprised. The waitress was young but very helpful and efficient. We could see the kitchen, as the prior reviewer pointed out, and it looked exactly like what I'm used to seeing. Finally, the quality of the sushi was quite good. I've had better, but I thoroughly enjoyed every bite and so did the whole family. Growing up I had several Japanese friends and ate Japanese food at their house as much as I could. We honeymooned in Japan. We live in Seattle and sushi is probably our favorite food. So I don't think I'm a stranger to sushi, but our experience completely contradicted the other reviewers. If you're not a die hard sushi foodie, I think you'll like it here. read more

Taka's Grill was a decent enough place for dinner last night. Didn't quite blow my socks off, but then again I will probably try it again when I can put sushi back on my personal menu. We ended up with Japanese cuisine last night, my hubby with his usual tonkatsu and me with the yellowtail collar. Honestly I don't know how the man orders the same dish every where we go!. I can't even think of one dish I order, no matter where I am that I order if I see it listed. He has no explanation either. Anyway that yellowtail collar was huge! It was cooked to tender perfection and served simply with streamed veggies and rice. The veggies were broccoli and carrots, which didn't make much sense to me, might have been better replaced with a salad. Nothing scary about this place. It was clean and service helpful. We decided to go to Fort Bragg for my birthday and had no idea what we would do for dinner. Good Japanese food in Fort Bragg? Nah. Until we tried Taka's Grill! Yum yum and more yum. It was real Japanese food! Now I am picky about my sushi and such (ex-hubby is a Japanese restaurant owner/chef) in Redding of all places (see Sakura Sushi) and I have truly been spoiled over the last 30 years with his food. So I go into every new place with a jaundiced eye. But not to worry, the sushi was Tokyo style all the way - which means the size of the fish and rice to make the nigiri sushi was correct - not the way most places do it with a huge slab of fish and a huge ball of rice to appeal to people used to supersizing everything. We loved the chicken teriyaki, and my tempura was light and fluffy fresh. I enjoyed my birthday dinner very much. read more

Wow, poor place has gotten some bad reviews, but a couple of local gourmet restaurant chefs and I (a foodie) eat here regularly. "Off the Hook" may have more of an ambiance, but they deep fry whole chickens in their Tempura oil! Ick. Also, SIX of my friends and I have gotten food poisoning from OTH. Double Ick...that's why if you want descent sushi in Podunk FB--not Tokyo, NY or SF--Taka's is the place! Fish is fresh (my parents and friends--chefs and foodies--say) and veggie rolls are fabulous (vegan me says). Wait staff is family run, so small; occasionally they get bogged down when it get's packed! Still my wait has never been too long. read more

Taka's grill is a pleasant surprise during our visit to Fort Bragg. We were happy to find out the fresh sushi and sashimi made by Taka. The sea urchin came from local fishing boat and the yellow tail, sweet shrimp, halibut were also top grade. Pricing is also very reasonable. This place is amazing! The food is high quality and fresh and the service is fast. I love the Cucumber Seaweed Salad with it's tangy vinaigrette and the Shiitake Mushrooms Tempura is heavenly. The Vegetable Gyoza is perfect and comes with a scrumptious dipping sauce; we order extra bowls of this to put on other items. The sushi rolls are delicious and are just as good with brown rice at this place (not always the case in other places). I'm a vegetarian now but I fondly remember the Seared Ahi Roll! read more

OMG.....not even my worst image nation of a Bad Meal would have met my experience. First I ask for a class of water, never came had to ask another waitress. Second I watched three, Yes three tables after us order and receive there food. Third the sushi was better at a supermarket. And last when I went up to pay my bill, because the waitress did not give us a bill. She tried to hand me the last dish she forgot to bring us that had been sitting there. Went here for lunch after finding Off The Hook closed, not sure how anyone could rate this place higher than a 2. Took an hour to get a bento box and a rainbow roll. The bento box was okay but the roll was not good at all... The roll was poorly made, the fish didn't taste fresh at all, (tuna was barely pink, not red at all) and sliced so thin it was almost transparent. Service was nonexistent. I'm not sure about the sushi here, so this review is only about the ramen. The pork and vegetable ramen tasted more like Chinese noodle soup than true Japanese ramen. The pork was extremely dry and not flavorful. The ramen itself was soft and overcooked. The broth was not rich enough. read more

Taka's provided us with a most pleasant Japanese dinner, nicely paced and graciously served. We both had the local, fresh cod bento box dinner, one with the sea urchin sauce and one salt-and-pepper. The salad in a bento is often an afterthought, but this one was particularly well-executed. The tempera was light and crispy, and the cod was perfectly done. (We each liked our sauce the best.) My family and I were surprised at how good this place is. We like Japanese food and are quite picky. My kids ordered a wild caught salmon bento to share and they ate every last bite. I did manage to try a little and it was good, not over seasoned and not overcooked. My husband and I ordered nigiris (yellowtail, tuna, fatty tuna, amaebi, uni) and rolls (taka roll, albacore tuna roll). Everything tasted great. The service was a tad slow but nothing unbearable. Good food fast service nice ambience. My wife ordered the teriyaki chicken and her favorite part was that it was not lathered in teriyaki sauce and had flavor from the other parts of the meal.
