My mother and sister had the teriyaki and said that it was just okay so I would recommend the sushi over the other items. They allowed me to bring in my own bottle of wine for a small corkage fee which was great because their wine menu is limited. So from the menu choices, and it being a fishing place thought it wouldn't be so bad. I ordered the curry chicken and a spider roll and the guy ordered a salmon teriyaki dish. Both came with miso, which was lukewarm. The rice wasn't fluffy, definitely not fresh. The curry was interesting. It was like they took the grilled teriyaki chicken and shred it and then added loads of black pepper to the curry sauce. At least my guys salmon was grilled right. And the sushi. Anyone used to sushi, no not, a sushi snob, but your average sushi consumer would know this was not it. My spidercrab didn't even remotely look like what I've had and the caterpillar..no. We ordered pan fried udon with salmon- it was made in some sweet sauce which tasted like diluted ketchup and the salmon was overcooked. We also ordered shrimp curry with rice- it was an American diner's version of thick gravy with carrots and potatoes and rice on the side and three shrimp tempura on top. Giving it two stars because our server was very sweet and made sure I our dietary restrictions were taken care of when we ordered but I would recommend this place to anyone craving Japanese food. read more

One person played it safe with Teriyaki (very nicely sliced and cooked), but it was the Rainbow Roll and the nigiri sushi and sashimi that stole the show. Salmon, mackerel, hamachi, squid, unagi, tamago, shrimp, etc. CALIFORNIA ROLL Their version uses whole imitation crab (not the imitation crab mixes with mayonnaise) TEMPURA UDON The tempura was served in the broth which became soggy. Typically we're used to having the tempura on the side. Average at best. UNI We were hoping they would have Uni since the locals highly recommend them. Went today, drove up from Santa Rosa for other reasons, but wanted more uni today for lunch. No change in price ($8 for two) and fresh off the uni diver's boat. I had 3 orders. Best around I kid you not folks ! And what's the beef with the service? I thought the service today was very good as busy as they were. Food was extremely subpar, but the service was lovely. The chicken katsu was burnt, and the sukiyaki beef was in chunks and a bit hard to chew. The noodles in the sukiyaki were undercooked. The dragon roll was good, but small, and the tempura udon was standard, but the tempura felt soggier than usual, perhaps it was sitting in the soup for a while before handed to our table. The waitress was very sweet, and checked with us a few times, but overall I would not recommend eating here to anyone used to traditional Japanese food. read more

The staff was FRIENDLY. We came in with 5 kids ranging from 15 down to 4 so we are used to rude servers unfortunately. Not here! We felt welcome and we weren't rushed. They food was decent. Definitely fresh. I knocked off a star for the sushi specifically. It wasn't great, especially for being right on the coast. Our last roll I ended up asking which was one of the popular rolls and our server said the Ahi roll, which was in fact the best roll we ordered. After driving in from a long drive through PCH and spending an hour trying to figure out what to eat in Fort Bragg (there are not many options around 8pm because many places close at 9pm), I recommend Taka's Grill. Not only is the service great (we were lucky to have a bright-eyed, big smiles waitress), but the food is good. The portion size of the handroll is small compared to what I am used to, but it did the job. I ordered a flavorful hot soup bowl of shrimp tempura and soba noodles. The soup base was delicious, the shrimp tempura was just right, and the temperature of my soup was hot enough to take in delicious slurps of noodle. This is an good location for a meal to fill you up. I also enjoyed my free refills of green tea ice tea. It's not a place for everyone one, but I enjoyed the flavor in its simplicity. read more

I hate to say it but my true experience is less than a two star review. I'm giving an extra star because they're a local place with roots in the area and they make a lot of locals happy. That means something to me and maybe I hit it on a particularly bad night. However, my actual experience as a stinking tourist (who adores sushi) was truly negative. Our food took four times as long as it should have (and our server was new and couldn't answer any questions about what certain menu items were), the food was small portions, flavored and presented poorly (spicy yellowtail carpaccio and salmon skin), the atmosphere was really uncomfortable (for me, the bad Feng Shui was palpable) and unattractive (bright light and haphazard decor). I'm glad many people love this place however the next time I head to Fort Bragg I'll be headed to Italian or Mexican or...pizza instead. ;-/ read more

I love sushi and been to A LOT of sushi restaurants. I have been lenient on my reviews but there are instances where I feel restaurants should read upon their reviews/feedback and work on how to get better. Taka's can work on getting better and it can start with customer service. When I entered the restaurant, it took almost 10 minutes to even get an acknowledgement that I was there, they weren't even that busy on the day of my visit (every other table was vacant). Wait staff seemed adequate and you can see their kitchen from the waiting area; they were at least 5 people busting their chops in the kitchen. When I step foot in a sushi spot, I always order sashimi as an initial gauge to see if their fish is fresh or not. This visit seemed that it was probably either not fresh or was not properly prepared/stored prior. Their rolls were also small and not rolled tight that I am accustomed to. Their pricing was also above what I would usually pay but I'll factor in that I was dining at a seaside location. At the time (7/2021 visit), this was the highest rated sushi restaurant on Yelp. Should I go back to Fort Bragg, I would probably give the other joints a shot. read more

Extremely underrated sushi joint! Ordered an assortment of nigiri and was astoundingly impressed at chef's technique and flavors. Not a single grain of rice fell off the nigiri and the sushi rice was extremely well seasoned. Nice hints of vinegar accentuating the ankimo, marugai and more! Top attractions, local uni nigiri and yellow tail belly nigiri. So so so good! I'd go here again for the sushi in a heartbeat. read more

Service was awful. We got seated immediately but our waitress didn't come by for 10-15 minutes after. All she said was,"Do I need to come back?" She never introduced herself or asked what we wanted to drink. We had to order everything all together and then it took another 10 minutes for her to bring our drinks. She came back with the food soon after that and walked off. We had to go and hunt for our own silverware because she never brought any. I am very forgiving about most places and try to be as fair as possible when giving reviews. However, Taka's Japanese grill in Fort Bragg, CA is not a very pleasant retreat. It was very dissatisfying to us that the staff was not very nice. After sitting for almost 15 minutes waiting for a server to at least acknowledge our existence, my husband finally got up and let the waiter know that we were ready to order. We then waited another 10 minutes, meanwhile all the other guests were being waited on- and those were the guests who arrived after we were seated. Our order was finally taken, and then another waiting game began. After about a half hour, and I kid you not, seeing all the other customers being served, my husband got up again and asked how our order was going. The waiter said, "oh it's on the way." We were finally served or lunch. Oh, and by the way, there were not very many customers to begin with. Like I said in the beginning, I am very forgiving and will give the best review I can, but along with their bad service came our lunch (chicken teri bowl, Teri beef bento, udon soup and cod fish bento)that was FAR from being tasty. Under seasoned and very "basic" is a fair review, considering our "first impression" of this place. Being from the Bay Area, there is NO COMPARISON to the amazing Asian cuisine choices we have. Service was great! Lady was very friendly and attentive. Started our dinner with bland miso soup. The soft shell crab appetizer was great with the tempura sauce but not with the soy sauce/lemon sauce it came with. The tuna nigiri was very fresh and the dragon roll was pretty good. The cod special bento box dinner was not good. The cod was not fried like the picture I saw on yelp, but wet with no flavor. Have had better sushi in Bay Area and Sacramento. read more
