Eel nigiri topped with unagi sauce... for a dollar. Repeat after me, a dollar! If you're expecting some top quality sushi then head to Sushi Ogawa in DC and pay an arm and a leg. This is value sushi and boy do you get your value. The majority of places in the DMV charge $2.50 for one nigiri. You could spend $20 and still not be satisfied because you're hungry for more. Takohachi solves that problem by offering their nigiri for a dollar; you'll leave with a happy belly as well as a happy wallet. My personal suggestion if you feel nigiri is too plain... order all eel. Trust me, the eel sauce makes every piece delicious. Hubs had a hankering for sushi and we got wind of their $1 nigiri special, so headed to Takohachi for an early friday night dinner. Here's what we ordered and my thoughts: -Pork gyoza app: Very good, the gyoza wrappers were nice and crunchy on one side and still pliable on the other - a good sign that they weren't pre-frozen and the wrappers are appropriately thin -House salad with ginger dressing: I'm just obsessed with ginger dressing. I need to find a place to buy this stuff. The salad itself was iceburg, spinach, red and green bell peppers and tomato. A solid little salad -Yakatori: (aka chicken skewers). These take a bit because I think they grill to order. The sauce is nice and light - I would have liked a biiiit more charring of the chicken, but mostly this was very good -$1 nigiri: the pieces of fish are a bit smaller than normal nigiri because duh, they are only charging a dollar - this is still an absolute steal while they are running this special. Hubs got the octopus, salmon, tuna and eel and the eel was his standout favorite -Specialty roll: We got the shrimp tempura + spicy tuna topped with tuna and flavor wise, this roll fell a bit flat for me because it was pretty bland. I'd like to see more specialty roll offerings, what they have is a bit limited. I think I came on a bad day judging by all the great reviews. The service was good but the sushi was not fresh tasting at all and the sashimi had been handled in a way that made the sushi warm which also caused brown spots. We ordered a bunch of tuna, salmon, yellowtail and a large swath of them looked uniquely different in a bad way. I honestly thought I was going to be sick after the meal as some tasted borderline spoiled. The only fish that was remotely good was the salmon. Came in yesterday and was pretty pleased with overall quality of the food. They're still on grand opening so they have the $1 nigiri special going on as well as $4 takoyaki and pork/eel rice bowls. Things we ordered: - 10 pieces of nigiri (salmon belly, yellowtail belly, mackerel, scallop, and white tuna) : all of which tasted indisputable - Sweetheart roll: shrimp tempura and spicy tuna inside with regular tuna on top drizzled with some spicy sriracha mayo type sauce that I enjoyed but it didn't wow me - Eel and avocado roll: pretty standard - White tuna roll: I love white tuna so this was simple and yummy - Eel rice bowl: so the eel was super small, but they gave you a lot of rice and it was only $4 - Takoyaki: it said it came with 5 pieces, but I only counted 4 and I believe it was only 2 balls cut in half, but I liked it! Super creamy and bonito flakes on top were much thicker than the thin flakes I'm used to - House hot sake: not the best, but it was solid and $8 for a large if I'm remembering correctly Our check came out to about $65 which I thought was reasonable because we did get a lot of food and drinks. The service was a little slow, but they seemed understaffed and were using a paper order system rather than a pos. The two servers that were working were pleasant and polite, so no complaints on that. Came here specifically for their $1 nigiri deal (unheard of in the area!). Although I had heard horror stories of the slow service here from other friends, I came here for lunch right around when they opened on a Saturday and had no issues with the service. We literally only ordered nigiris and ended up getting about 80 pieces between 4 people. They have a pretty good variety of fish and my favorites were the Salmon, Smoked Salmon, Unagi (prob the best), and Sweet Shrimp. They even have some items that would never ever be $1 at a normal sushi restaurant like Scallop, Uni, and Fish Roe. Although I will say, their uni did not taste as fresh and delicious as the ones I've paid more for but I can't complain when it's only a dollar. Only caveat: the nigiri size here is SMALL. It's way smaller than what I expected which is probably why we ate so many pieces. Again, can't really complain but it's a noticeable difference. I will probably be back next time I want to gorge on nigiri and their $1 deal is here to stay as a part of their regular menu (all day too!). Not bad for $1 nigiri! With a lot of warnings of this restaurant's service from another friend, I came here with my girlfriend and another couple at Saturday 11:30 AM. The service shouldn't be thattttt bad, could it? Afterall, only two other parties were in the restaurant. Service that morning was pretty good! My party ordered a bunch of different fish, basically trying out everything on the menu. The pieces were small, but I didn't mind. It's a dollar. My girlfriend and I ended up ordering about forty pieces between us. The uni was okay - can't really taste the sea like you're supposed to. Revisited this restaurant 3 months later and the sizes of the $1 nigiri have significantly decreased, some items were about 1" (L) x .5" (W) x 1" (H). My guess is they are doing some cost cutting because they have more customers now?? Anyways, despite the size, the quality of the food reminds the same for the price tag. This is 100% the best sushi deal that you can get in the DMV area - $1 nigiri all day, every day! They don't skimp on any of the fish and the nigiri special includes so many different types of fish, from your basics (salmon, tuna, yellowtail) to the unique (flounder, mackerel) to the normally pricey (scallop, raw ebi, uni). I came on a Friday during the dinner rush and waited about 20 minutes to be seated. I did knock down a star because we had to wait over 50 minutes to get our food from the time of order. It looks like there was only one waitress for the whole restaurant and two chefs working on the food. I'll be back here again for the nigiri deal, but probably at a less busy time. read more

For years this was our "go to" sushi restaurant. The rare combination of good sushi at an affordable price was too good to pass up, so we'd drive all the way down from the McLean/Arlington border for take out. Since we'd typically order 40-50 pieces of nigiri + 4 rolls, the $1-$1.5/nigiri piece was well worth the drive. Their old location was redeveloped, guessing they lost their lease, and they've moved down the street. New location is nicer, but gone is the affordability. We placed our typical order not knowing they'd raised their prices. Ouch!! I asked about the $1-$1.50 nigiri, and they said new location, new higher prices. At their new price point it's definitely not worth the drive. Too bad, I hate losing a favorite go-to restaurant. read more

We had the $1 nigiri here and the salmon smelled so bad. Like it was a week old. The tuna, eel, scallop, and yellowtail were okay. Tasted fresh. We ordered 7 eel but they only brought us 1. Lol. They're Takoyaki is okay. The pork belly skewers are great! Miso soup is on the salty side. Overall, the food is average. After having a disappointing experience at another sushi restaurant in Arlington it was so nice to come to Takohachi for some amazing sushi. They offer $1 nigiri all day long. What a steal! We also ordered the gyoza, two different rolls and the tonkatsu ramen. I wanted to try a little bit of everything. The gyoza and ramen were just okay for me but the sushi was so fresh and had the right amount of fish and rice ratio. We will be back for more nigiri! Finally, a great Sushi place in Arlington! I was excited to see this place open up and in such a convenient location at the intersection of Glebe and Columbia Pike. My BF and I came here on a Saturday right at dinner opening. Within the first 10 minutes the restaurant was almost completely full (which was a great sign). Service was fast and friendly and the establishment itself had a nice, simple, and modern feel. We ordered an assortment of sashimi and nigiri as well as the Wasabi Roll, Dancing Roll, and Spicy Tuna. The fish was fresh and delicious with beautiful presentation. My BF ordered the Ramen (I forgot which kind) but he really enjoyed it and the broth was on-point. They also have a nice selection of wine, sake, and beer at very reasonable prices. Takohachi, known for their "$1 nigiri sushi", exceeded my expectations. The first thing I want to discuss is their service. I read in almost all their reviews that their service was horrible. So I went in with that mindset. I'm not sure if it was the time I went in for dinner but I don't think their service was that bad. Let's just say I always had my water cup full. For their food, I didn't really know what to expect at a $1 sushi place that includes uni, eel, yellowtail, and etc. My girlfriend and I ordered about 18 pieces of sushi and a sweet heart roll (chef's maki roll). They mistakenly gave us 2 tuna nigiri which they let us just eat on the house. Being a dollar, the sushi wasn't bad. They didn't skimp out on the sushi and the amount of rice was perfect. Don't get their sweet heart roll. It's not worth $14. I gave this place 4 stars because I was thrown off when they charged us $4 for 2 miso soups when sushi places usually provided miso soup for free. I love having a sushi place nearby. A GOOD sushi place...even better. Takohachi is located in a nondescript strip mall, but don't let that deter you. The $1 nigiri is a steal, and so fresh. You can't go wrong with any of them, but my favorites are the uni and Ikura (fish eggs), along with the wasabi roll. The takoyaki is crispy and creamy, but they tend to run out early - call ahead! We've only had the sushi, but look forward to returning for the ramen and pork belly skewers. The dessert menu also looks delicious, but I love all things green tea so I'm biased. We've dined in once, and had no issues with the service. Granted, it was about an hour before close, but there was a decent number of patrons. Our server was friendly and stopped by an appropriate number of times to check in without hovering. To-go orders have always been ready within the stated time-frame, and are packaged up neatly. There can be a long wait for take-out *sushi* on weekend evenings (~45 mins), so something to factor into your plans. Ample parking in the lot. Just recently opened and offering $1 sushi all day, if you don't mind waiting a while to get the sushi it's worth a visit. We tried the tofu appetizer and seaweed salad. The tofu was ok, nothing special and the seaweed salad was typical as well which is not a bad thing. At least it was what I expected. The sushi is a hit or miss as far as ordering from that menu. Obviously for the price the quality is not going to be there on some of the items. I really enjoyed the salmon bellie, eel, and basically any of the belly's. Everything else was just kind of cheap grade sushi. I would not get the uni. I have not tried their speciality rolls or ramen so I can't comment on those items yet. I'll be back to try them out for sure. I did have the green tea pudding and I enjoyed the taste quite a bit. The texture could probably use work but overall it was good. It came with whip cream and a cherry. The restaurant is still in its grand opening phase so I'm sure they will try to improve as time goes on. I eat here pretty regularly and they have a solid sushi menu. The prices are wonderful and the quality does not disappoint. Several delicious japanese dishes as well. If you walk in and place a takeout order it's still good. Friendly service every time. I would say they desperately need to improve their phone order process for takeout. If you can get through to their number (huge if) you WILL be placed on hold. I've yet to actually have the employee return to the phone to take my order. I usually hang up after 3 minutes. Today I waited just to see how long it would take while I cooked a meal at home. I could hear them talking but return to the phone they did not. I have a screen shot as proof: 10 minutes and no one returned to take my order. I see other people coming in to pickup phone orders but I can't understand what they did to actually have someone pickup the phone. Sadly I live within walking distance of this place and find it quicker to drive to Shirlington for carryout service. Little about me: I'm Japanese American who speaks the language and cooks Japanese food at home. I rarely review Japanese restaurant since many places don't serve traditional Japanese cuisine, and when restaurant is authentic, a lot of the time it is hard for me to take my two very young kids along to eat since they are considered "high end" and kids are not really welcomed. Owner of Takohachi also owns the Japanese style yakiniku shop Satsuma, in Bethesda. Satsuma has been a great addition to DC area's Japanese community and everyone was excited when it opened up. So we were equally excited to have a new restaurant by the same owner opening up in NoVA, and our family has been frequenting here since the opening. Takohachi is not a yakiniku place (sorry if I lead you on). But they do have the famous dollar a piece sushi and a pretty good ramen, which my son loves. And menu has been well thought out and are reasonably priced. Especially the lunch time menu has a great price point! Many items on the menu are typical Japanese food that everybody eats in Japan. But what's important is that they are done right. My family tends to do rolls and sushi plus couple of small plates here, but for the full Japanese meal experience, try foods like tonkatsu, chicken karaage, nasu dengaku, and also the specials they have. Oh and do try desserts too! The house made sweets are awesome. If you have kids, this restaurant is spacious enough for you to roll in with a baby stroller (as long as it's not crowded) and that is something I LOVE. There is high chair and the bathroom is pretty clean. Parking is free too. To be fair, yes you can get a better sushi somewhere else. But you will be paying A LOT MORE. I take this quality and price any day. And yes, there are other ramen shops out there that may serve something better, but again the price! I think the restaurant has something for everyone, since they do offer a lot of "typical" Japanese food people expect, though I hope people will try something new rather than settle with chicken teriyaki or eel donburi. Thank goodness a sushi place opened up on Columbia Pike. This place was only a block Away from my work, so went there for lunch with Co workers. They have $1 nigiri which is great! The restaurant is small on the inside, but very cozy. I ordered the sushi, udon, and donkatsu to share. I think all in all the food for the price was pretty good.
