I am THRILLED to find out Tal's is still there. Looking at the photos on yelp the place looks pretty much the same. I grew up in Inglewood and my mother took me there on Sunday mornings very often and I would always get the short stack. Back in the day, the 60s specifically, the butter would come in the small metal pan that was set over hot water so you got this marvelous melted butter over the most wonderful pancakes i've ever had. I was brought here and promised one of the best breakfasts in the area. We then pulled up to this little place and I didn't know what I got myself into. Once inside the unassuming exterior was a blast to past, say 72 years! When I got here it was packed! Luckily a table was open, there's also counter seating to add to the nostalgic atmosphere. This place is only open until 3, so the menu was mostly breakfast with a few lunch options with a Southern touch. I ordered the Grilled Corned Beef Hash Breakfast which comes with two eggs, hash browns, and toast, and also ordered one of their "famous" pancakes. The wait was quite a while but I was lenient given the restaurant was fully packed and they were working with a tiny kitchen. Meanwhile, the waitresses were great, frequently checking on us before and after the food came. The food was great! All no-nonsense but done perfectly. Their famous pancakes were the perfect texture and flavor. The best part of all this was it was all cheap! I don't think I saw anything on the menu over $7! Amazing food! This was my first time at Tal's and I will continue to go back. They're open from 6am to 3pm so if you have a craving for good breakfast you better hurry before 3pm. I wish they had longer hours but oh well. The parking is scarce and the outward appearance seems questionable but once your inside its just a humble diner serving up great food. The menu has plenty to choose from but I chose Tal's Special and my picks were 3 pancakes, chicken wings, scrambled eggs, and home fries. The portions are big and full of flavor. The pancakes are nice and fluffy, the chicken was freshly fried with good crunchy skin and the home fries were tender and well seasoned. I highly recommend this place to breakfast lovers like myself. I don't know how long Tal's has been open, but it seems like I have been a patron here for over fifteen years. My LA bestie brought me to this little coffee shop several years ago and every visit throughout the years has been excellent. The yummy breakfast is reasonably priced and the portions are just right. I think the only issue is that others Yelpers could find negative is that the building is a little dated, as are the furnishings. This could be a little off-putting for some, but for me, I think it adds to it's charm. I usually order eggs with hot links, it comes with buttered hash browns and butter griddled toast. We both ordered the Tals special - chicken wings, scrambled eggs, choice of potatoes, home fries or grits (we requested home fries), and choice of toast, waffle or pancakes (we requested pancakes). 45 minutes later we get our food and theres a problem. We got hash browns instead of home fries and the chicken wings were drumettes (7). My wings were fried hard and pretty much unseasoned..as was everything else. My hubs ordered a lemonade three separate times and it finally arrived just as he was done eating. The lady who took our order was robotic..no greeting or welcome, just 'are you ready to order?' When she returned with the food she just dropped the plates and left...I said thank you and she didnt respond. I lost my appetite once I saw the feathers on my wings...I just cant. We sit and wait another 20 minutes for the bill. Once the bill comes we literally had to get up and stand behind the counter customers to get someone to notice us. We pay and leave and I'm still hungry. This place has been my breakfast/brunch go-to spot since I first moved to LA. It definitely is a step back in time a few generations back. The service may be a tad slower especially during rush hour but it's that extra bit of "personal touch" that you just don't find anywhere else :) The grits are the best in the city, the pancakes are outstanding. They also make some of the best grilled/fried chicken around. Be aware that this place is only open until lunch time however! Cash only was at first a bummer but in this day and age it's nice to know that there is at least some place where you can turn away from your chip card to eat some good ol'fashioned cooking. The location isn't perfect but it's highly visible in traffic and there is a public library a few blocks down.. Oh, and let's not forget the prices! You can have a good breakfast and bring yourself and two other people and expect to pay around $21 total. Take that Dennys! I have a highly sensitive stomach including colitis and yet I have never had a problem with cleanliness or the cooking.
