Amazing food, ambiance and service! Even better than it is BYOB...! I would definitely recommend this

Ate in their patio last week because we didn't want to wait an hour for i door dining. Thankfully because they had large heat lamps it wasn't too cold. We ordered the entraña and lomo for our meat and the beef and spinach & cheese empanada. The portion sizes were very large. The beef empanada was just okay & I probably wouldn't get it again but the spinach and cheese was was amazing The meat was both really good. I liked the sauce on the lomo better but the entraña was very soft and juicer because the cut has more fat. It's really worth the money and it's BYOB! Would definitely go again. read more

Tango Sur is not bad by any means (I know this is somewhat eyebrow raising given my 3 stars which should really be more like 3.75). The service was what you'd expect from this type of affair: server made recommendations, waitstaff kept up with water and removing plates. The vibe was nice. I wasn't particular fond of the front dining area. I liked the mod decor but sitting in front of the host stand and just outside the restroom wasn't for me. Sitting outside this area could have helped my impression. The food was not for me. The melted cheese app made zero sense without any crackers or something to pair it with. And the three tiny slices of bread (for two) didn't help. The empanadas were tasty and probably the highlight of the night. The side of asparagus was way too much that most went to waste. The mashed potatoes were too watery for my taste. The steak would have been great if it wasn't lathered in garlic. Everyone loves garlic but it was way too saturated in it that it overshadowed the flavor of the steak. While this place wasn't the best for steak imo, it was a nice affair for celebrating and the service was on point. I'd give them a second shot if I had a reason to, like an invite for some sort of affair. BYOB. read more

Incredible restaurant in Lakeview perfect for all occasions. I've been to very few Argentinian steak houses and now I want to go to more. We ordered a bunch of entrees of meat to share with the table - my favorites were the Pechuga de Pollo (grilled chicken breast with chinichurri) and Entraña (outer skirt steak with vesuvio potatoes). We came Sunday lunch. Service was great and we made reservations band were seated right away. They lit the candle and the outdoor seating looked beautiful. However the food was subpar. We got the el filet at medium and ended up with raw middle on both pieces. The lomo was supposed to be well done and still had blood oozing out. Also didn't care for the flavor is of lomo. The only good we actually enjoyed was the spinach mash potatoes. The empanada only the spinach and cheese was good, both the chicken and beef was bland. This was a recommendation from a friend that lived in the city. South American/ Argentina steakhouse. They did not take reservations so you just put your name on a list and they will call when a table is available. It's also BYOB which we didn't know. Many diners had 2-3 bottles. This place was hopping from 7pm til close. Service: we got our appetizer and salad very quick. The food took awhile and we were getting hangry. Food: When I got my plate, I was like - THIS IS FOR ONE? Ok, granted I order the 1/2 chicken but some places will serve 1/2 a Cornish hen which is a decent size for 1 person. Nope, I had no idea how I was gonna finish it...I ended up eating the dark portion and brought the rest home. Same thing for my cousin who ordered the stuff steak. Her plate was as big as mine. The sauce was so flavorful and they brought out a delicious chimmichurri sauce on the side. There were potatoes as well just in case the meat wasn't enough. The other 2 girls orders the salmon: one with mushroom sauce and the other with orange wine sauce. They said it was delicious. I don't try either because I was overwhelmed with my plate. Our waiter gave us dessert on the house: caramel flan. It was so good!!! Overall: I would definitely come back. I live trying out new cuisines. This was my 1st Argentina restaurant. The dessert Mil hoja was made by a lady who sells it to the restaurant. The Steaks they have are amazing, they have plenty other options. But, we decided to go Steak mode and it didn't disappoint us. The services were very good to us and very timing. Short story: decent food and fair price for a steakhouse, but overall ambience and experience was less than satisfactory. Long story: I put my party of 4 on the list (they don't take online reservations/calls) and was told the wait would be about an hour or so, but we actually ended up waiting over 2 hours. They also don't seem to be using any sort of electronic system for keeping track of people, just a pen and notepad, so when we asked how much longer the wait would be, they seemed a little disorganized and didn't know what to tell us. The place itself is rather small and crowded, so there's barely room to walk or even stand while waiting for the bathroom. Also it's extremely dark; our table was lit by just one candle (which I guess is supposed to add some kind of romantic vibe but the only vibe I was getting was frustration since I couldn't read the menu). With all the people sitting so close together, it's terribly loud and I found myself almost having to scream at my friends 2 feet away from me so that they could hear me. As for the food itself, I LOVED the empanadas. I got the sweet beef and ham & cheese and both were extremely satisfying. I had the churrasco for my entree and it was average. Wasn't bad but wasn't the best steak I've ever had. BTW, it's BYOB. Can't complain about the service -- our waiter was very helpful and checked on us a few times. Despite the place being so busy, food came out pretty quickly. Not too high on my list of steakhouses. read more

It was unseasoned and we had the most difficult time trying to cut it. It was so tough we couldn't eat it. We walked in without a reservation at about 6pm on a Friday and were offered immediate seating on the heated patio - a win in my book! We ordered two beef empanadas and we each got a steak. The food was absolutely spectacular and portions were huge - I couldn't finish my spinach mashed potatoes! The only complaint I have is in regards to the service. While other patrons on the patio received quick service from other waiters, ours was nowhere to be found most of the meal. Our empanadas came out about 30 minutes after ordering while the other patrons with different waiters had their appetizers within 10 minutes. I have been to Tango Sur many times, and I can't believe this, but I have now been dining there for two decades! (I was so fortunate to get in a dinner yesterday during a 24 hour pass through Chicago, but used to go there all the time when I lived in Chicago.) I cannot believe how consistent it has been all these years. As always, I walked in with wine and beer, since they are BYOB, and, even thought I haven't been there in at least 5 years, ordered without even looking at the menu. (The hot berenjena dish, entrana, and later, flan!) That eggplant dish was as good as ever. Particularly it seemed like the ingredients were super fresh. The steak was cooked to perfection--when I asked for rare, the waiter said they recommend medium rare, but would do it a little less than that, which ended up being perfect. There were potentially two changes: they dressed the salad, which my friend said was probably because of the pandemic...they don't want you sharing olive oil and vinegar. And I don't remember potatoes coming with the steak, which were very nice. Chimichuri is still as good as anyone's, not that the steak needs it, and I've never had better flan. It's incredible in this day and age to go to a great restaurant includes a salad and bread and butter with your meal, which is a good example of how nice their hospitality is. All around the staff is awesome. Can't imagine I'll go so many years beforfe my next visit. read more

Ordered take out for Valentine's Day dinner because this place had so many great reviews. We ordered beef and chicken empanadas, Churrasco dinner, and Costeleta dinner. The beef empanada I personally loved more than the chicken empanada. They also provide you with small loaves of bread which was amazingly soft! My churrasco dinner was extremely delicious and loved the vesuvio potatoes on the side. The Costeleta was a bone in rib eye and my boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed it with the chimichurri sauce. We were around the neighborhood for a game and my boyfriend and I were looking for a place to eat during the rain delay. We came across this place through Yelp! Based on the great reviews and it was different from our usual meal choices. So we gave it a shot. Tango Sur is an Argentinean/Latin American steakhouse. We walked in around 6:30pm on a Tuesday and immediately got seated. This place is BYOB. The ambiance very soothing with dim lights and candle lights. Who doesn't like a candle light dinner every once in a while, right? And maybe it was good that you don't see how much you eat do you don't feel guilty on the spot when you are really having a good meal. We were planning to have something light and small, so we wouldn't end up with leftovers, we were heading to a baseball game afterwards. We ordered a few appetizers and an entree as our full meal to split. The appetizers: We got an safe order of a dish that were familiar with the empanadas, one of each - chicken, beef and ham and cheese. They were all good, nothing that outshined other cultures versions of Empanada. Personally, I always enjoy the rolled up portion of the dough of any empanada Next was the prosciutto served with hearts of palm and golf sauce. That was something I've haven't seen or tried before so we gave it a go. That dish was really good, just simple, clean flavor. The saltiness of the prosciutto together with the mild sweetness of the heart of palm was very delightful, top it off with the golf sauce (almost remind me of mayo) compliments the dish well. I highly recommend to try this. And lastly their Matambre, an Argentine specialty, it was veal rolled in with some type of vegetables that was served cold accompanied by this olive oil pesto sauce. Another one to try out because it was also good. The appetizer portions for me was not small, if you order one it is decent but 3? A little too much. (My BF was intending just to have the appetizers for his meal) I have to stop eating them because I ordered an entree still. For our entree, I picked their beef fillet with mashed potatoes. I figured it'll be small and we did ordered 3 appetizers which almost filled me up. When the plate arrived, the fillet entree had 2 about 6oz (or more?) steaks and a heaping size of mashed potatoes. We chucked because we didn't expect it to be 2 giant fillets! It came with a side of that pesto/olive oil sauce and salad - lettuce, tomatoes and onions and vinegar and olive oil for dressing, nothing fancy, plain and simple. Simple presentation, 2 meats, big green pile of mashed potatoes and a steak knife. Green mashed potatoes? Yes, you read that right! Their mashed potatoes was combined with spinach but still taste like regular mashed and it was so creamy and delicious. The meat itself was perfectly cooked to my liking and it was so tender, juicy and very flavorful. It also goes well with that pesto/olive oil sauce it was served with. We cleaned off that plate. And we were very pleased with out meal. Tango Sur is a very exellent steakhouse and very reasonably priced. Our bill was under $100 including tip! Good service, Max was our server that night and he was very friendly. So if your looking for a steakhouse but don't want a fancy-schmancy place, Tango Sur is perfect! If you like to have some drinks during your meal don't forget to BYOB. If you do, there is a liquor store just a couple of doors down. We are looking forward to come back and try their other meat offerings and planning to bring a group with us next time. They have a good size dining area. read more

My Argentinian in-laws took me here many years ago and I've dreamt of going back. I frequent Chicago but rarely have time to venture this far from downtown and I am so glad I did! I brought one of my employees with me and he was equally impressed. First off, Tango Sur is BYOB so grab your favorite beer or wine. If you forget, they own a bodega two doors and you get a $15 discount if you are consuming it in their restaurant! Super deal. We picked out a red blend from Mendoza and loved it. Ripe fruity notes and light on the palette. I had a spinach and cheese empanada and my colleague had beef. I ordered sweet breads too share and in one word, excellent. Light crispy outer with a tender middle. I like adding fresh squeezed lemon to really make it sing! We both ordered the skirt steak. It's my staple when I visit Argentinian restaurants and this one was by far the best! Cooked perfectly. Juicy and tender and full of flavor! For desert we shared an order of flan. It too was magnificent and probably big enough for 4! My meal was perfect in every way and I look forward to visiting again. read more
