Chicken katsu curry
Amy T.

Located inside the the hangar food hall in Long Beach, if you want to get your curry fix definitely check out Tanuki. Service was quick. Ambiance casual like a food court. Curry came out hot with good texture. I ordered the chicken katsu curry and the chicken was tender inside and crispy outside. Well made no regrets. Will come back.

While curry is their specialty they have other items such as udon, teriyaki, and donburi bowls as well as a few typical appetizers such as tempura and karaage. The restaurant is not very big but has a fair amount of tables. Its style has a mix of modern and traditional Japanese elements with lofi music playing in the background. We were given a friendly welcome upon entering and the service was great. We started with the mixed tempura which was light and crispy - a perfect starter that won't fill you up. For dinner we tried the beef curry and chicken katsu curry. Both were delicious. I had the chicken katsu. I really liked the breading as it was light and crispy - not too thick or greasy. The sauce was also rich and flavorful. I made it a combo which includes miso soup and a salad of choice. I selected the cucumber salad which was a little sweet but refreshing with the meal. I hope to try their donburi next.

Food didn't take that long but I like that there was a wait because I know it'll be freshly made. When I walked into the restaurant to pick up my order, inside was cozy and I noticed that it was pretty busy for a late Tuesday lunch. A really nice young woman who rang me up and handed me my bag of goods. When I got home, I was pleased to see that they had separated the Katsu from the curry sauce, so my meat didn't end up being soggy. Their curry sauce is different from most curry houses. There are some herbs in it that I can't put my finger on, but I love it because it's not like any of the others. Chicken was juicy and rice was fluffy. I also like their kizami ginger which had a nice solid crunch. Even though it took me a while to pick up my food, it was still nice and warm when I sat down to eat it. Very happy with the presentation and the flavour. We'll try to visit and eat at the restaurant next time. Parking lot is small and can get a little crowded with all the other businesses open. But there is also street parking available. Also, because it's a Japanese restaurant, they are not open on Mondays.

I've been to other curry places where the beef was braised and fork tender. I'm not even joking when I say that I could not cut the four pieces of meet with my fork. Beef was solid in a really bad way. Didn't even look like it was stewed in anything other than boiled water for 5 minutes. Basically it looks like they poured the curry and dropped in some boiled meat. Disgusting. I even told the server that I could not eat this and would have to feed it to my dog. Rice is flavorless. Just shaped rice with a the omelette was dry and basically a scrambled egg thrown on top. If you think you're getting that omelette rice you see online in videos from Japan, or even like the one on the menu you are in for a big surprise. The curry portion on my $20 plate was so small that I had to pay an extra 5.50 in order to eat the remaining rice with extra curry. The plate is raised in a way where you can pour a lot of curry in there. The cooks are obviously trying to skimp on portions. Service was slow. One gal took our order and never came back. Like I did not see her the remaining 20 minutes I was there. Didn't bring my extra pork cutlet or curry. I had to ask the other gal to bring our food bc the other one forgot or had bubble guts. The cutlet was mediocre but not as bad as the rock hard stew meat. I will never come back to this place and would advise ppl to stay away. Also the water literally tastes like they got it straight from the sink without a filter. Was expecting so much more. Left very disappointed. Do not order the beef curry plate. I guarantee you will regret it. This place is absolutely disgusting. Another note. This was my second time here. The first time I came during business hours and the place was closed due to no running water. I felt really cheated by the quality of food, portion size and the amount of money I paid for me and my buddy. This place absolutely sucks

Not commenting on the service because I ordered through the kiosk. From what I recall, there's no dedicated restaurant seating... it was basically first come first serve food court seating. I ordered the chicken curry katsu. The katsu came out super crispy... light, crunchy breading that held up all the way through without getting soggy. The curry itself was rich and flavorful without being overpowering, and it paired really well with the rice. Everything felt intentionally balanced, just the right ratio of curry to rice. I would definitely come back if I'm in the area.

The employee at the cash register was patient as I inquired about the many options/combinations I could choose on their menu. I ended up building my own bento box with the Wagyu Sukiyaki Beef. I also decided to upgrade to the Sushi Rice and add some Citrus Ponzu for more zing. My first thought of the beef was that this tasted oddly similar to what you would get as a Yoshinoya Beef Bowl which anyone can enjoy at a fraction of the cost. However, paired with the Sushi Rice and the Citrus Ponzu, it is no longer comparable. This place wins hands down. The bento box also came with bean sprouts, cucumbers, and pickled radish. I quite enjoyed the meal. The beef was placed on top of a bed of spring mix which had me somewhat disappointed since the price point was fairly high for the amount of beef you receive with your order. Otherwise, it was a delicious meal that I am sure I will get again. They have other beef options that also sound very appetizing, so I'll probably opt for those in the near future to get the full experience. Just be aware that this food hall can get very busy and finding seats can be challenging... parking too.

After we placed our order, the owner seemed frustrated and a bit grouchy. I'm still not entirely sure what went wrong since our credit card went through and we even received a receipt. In the end, he had to cancel the entire order and redo it on the left iPad because, for some reason, the order never showed up on his system. After sorting everything out, we waited another 15 minutes for our food. We ended up taking our order to go since the restaurant is very small, with only one table outside. But tbh, It was absolutely delicious. I think this might be the best Japanese curry we've ever had, even better than the old Curry House days (RIP). You can customize your bowl by choosing the rice size, white or brown rice, and up to three toppings. We added an omelet egg, chicken karaage, and pork cutlet, and everything was fantastic. I ordered the mild curry, which was the perfect spice level for me, while my husband got medium and really enjoyed the extra heat. I like how they give you a big tub of curry sauce no matter which rice bowl size you choose. We'll definitely be back and remember to use the left iPad when ordering.
