This is probably the only restaurant in the east valley that has authentic cantonese food. This time we ordered salty pepper pork, half roast duck, beef stew, and braised tofu. The salty pepper pork is a fried pork chop dish seasoned with salt pepper and small jalapenos. It's reallly good! The braised tofu came with some mixed bok choy and carrots. 10/10 on every dish! I ordered pick up from Door Dash and I finally found my favorite Chinese food in this area. I ordered the West Lake Beef Soup, Salt and Pepper Shrimp, and Beef Chow Fun. I've tried this at many restaurants, especially the chow fun, but this one just tastes better to me with fresh ingredients. The food isn't overly salty as most Chinese food can be. I liked the salt and pepper shrimp a lot, although I do like it with the heads still on. I appreciate that they do devein the shrimp and cut it so it's easier to eat. The West Lake Beef Soup is so good with soft tofu, cilantro, egg, and some shiitake mushrooms. It is like an egg drop soup with ground beef in it. I recommend trying it if you like soups like I do. I will try to dine in and take photos next time and I can't wait to try their mapo tofu, fish, and other items. read more

If this were closer to our home, it would be our go-to Chinese restaurant in the valley. My biggest quibble was the cheapo fork I was given, not substantial enough to cut the excellent eggplant in the excellent scallop and eggplant dish. The eggrolls while thinner than I like were nicely filled. The hot and sour soup was more to my taste than to my wife's but both of us thought it flavorful and full of interesting ingredients. I wanted to do a dry run of a "new to me" Cantonese restaurant before the 'rents come into town for the holidays. What drew me to Tao Garden was that they had Beef Chow Fun with Black Bean Sauce on the menu. Usually all you can get around here is beef chow fun with light soy sauce (similar dish but without black beans or onions and peppers). The chow fun was pretty decent! It was the real deal just like they have in CA. How does it compare? It was average, but hey, at least its available, hot, fresh and tasty and that is good enough for me. I also wanted to compare the Beef Stir Fried with Bitter Melon with my usual place in Mesa. This was just ok. I felt the beef could have been more tender and the bitter melon should have been cut crosswise instead of lengthwise which left a chewy texture. So overall, its a solid 3 star restaurant. I would like to come back and try out the duck. I thought about ordering it but found it strange very few of my trusted YES members whose reviews of chinese food in the area didn't review this place. read more

The price was fairly high for the quality of food and flavor. I had originally ordered from here by mistake but I thought I would try it anyways because I LOVE Chinese food. I think this restaurant would benefit better from: 1. A menu review, there are so many things on the menu, its hard to do all of them right. 2. We've been coming here for years and the food has always been consistently cooked to perfection. I ordered the fish with black bean sauce while my wife ordered chicken teriyaki with rice from their lunch menu. The chicken teriyaki tasted sweet and tender with lots of vegetables. My fish practically melted in my mouth. But it wasn't as spicy as I liked. We each ordered the hot and sour soup with our lunch meal which was so delicious. I never gave this place a try, because the photos makes me think this is only for American Chinese food. Until a few days ago, I came to eat with my friends, and I realized they make authentic Cantonese food. We ordered steam fish(清蒸鲫鱼), chicken with green onions(葱爆鸡), beef with bitter melon(苦瓜牛肉), west lake beef soup(西湖牛肉羹), etc. Everything was good, not 5 start good, but good compare to most of the Chinese restaurant around this area. Did not get to try the food. We were there for over 45 minutes, with other tables that arrived after us being served first. When I stood up to ask how much longer on our food, I was told 10 more minutes as they were just starting on our order! Mind you, we only ordered 3 items. I asked to pay for our drinks as we chose to leave, and the older lady there yelled at me. A younger lady apologized and said we didn't have to pay for the drinks. I understand that when a restaurant is busy the food might take long. But when it's not busy, and other tables with less of a wait time are served ahead of us, that's not understandable and not good service. I used to love the food, but the last time we went with our extended family, which we had 2 large round tables, the food just wasn't good. They must have changed cooks more than a year ago because when I ordered takeout for my own family, the food didn't taste good then either. That's unfortunate, because I thought the iced tea I ordered was awful and wanted to gwt something different to drink. And then there is this old guy in here. Owner? Manager? I dont know, but he definitely is part of this place. Anyway, he was just sitting at a table and talking. And, when he talks, he talks loud enough for the whole restaurant to hear. Ordered some delivery from Tao Garden today via Doordash, and I can honestly say that it's a goddamned shame I haven't been here in so long. The shredded roast duck noodle soup is an absolute treat, with a really pleasant oily broth and nice chunks of tasty duck. The XO beef with green beans was wonderful, with a perfect texture contrasting between the crisp green beans and the softer but flavorful beef. The seafood with XO sauce was a winner, with large pieces of fresh seafood (fat scallops, chunks of squid, etc) with a little bit of spice to it via some stir-fried chilis. The Singapore style noodles were also amazing, with a nice little amount of spice that made you want to just suck in a mouthful and fill your cheeks with 'em. All in all, I'm really pleased with this place and I need to visit the actual restaurant again. I want to try some of that super-fresh fish! read more

We went on a weekday evening, so it was pretty empty and service was good. For a group of 6 plus a toddler, we ordered 1 soup and 6 dishes, which was the perfect amount of food: * fish soup - not much fish meat, not really a fan of the chewy yellow stuff, but flavor was good * Mongolian beef - good, one of the best dishes we got, would order again (but you better like lots of onions) * honey walnut shrimp - yummy, big pieces of shrimp, not too much mayo * sautéed green beans - good, not too salty or overcooked * mapo tofu - just ok, not spicy enough, wouldn't order again * steamed whole fish - tender but slightly chewy tilapia, good sauce, would order again * fried salty pork chop - average/good They also provide complimentary dessert besides fortune cookies: warm sweet soup with small tapioca pearls. Food is absolutely delicious. One of the best Cantonese spots in Az, but you might have an unpleasant dinner. If you get the older waitress whose name is Mingyu Zhang, then be prepared for rude behavior and pushy attitude. The last time we ate, she kept trying to hurry us out of the restaurant. She kept checking if we were done and she even told us that it's time to leave. We were simply there to have a quick bite, but she was rude and unprofessional. There aren't a lot of Cantonese places in Arizona and I'm very glad I found this place. The proportions are big and the price is very good. Whenever I walk in, it feels like home. The decorations are very identical to the ones in my parents house. I get a homey feeling from this restaurant. I ordered their seafood curry rice and prawns with black bean sauce; both were delicious and very filling. Their house special chow mein is also exceptional. Every year it is tradition in my family to go out to delicious Chinese food on Christmas Eve. A few years back our place of choice, "The Shangra-La" closed down. Since then we have been having a hard time finding a true replacement. Well... Let me tell you, we found a replacement. Tao Garden is the new spot. The food was absolutely delicious, every single dish. Hands down the best Chinese food we've had in years. I have been coming to this place periodically for over 12 years. But I have not been here for about 2 years so I decided on getting some dinner and taking it back home for my family to enjoy. When I arrived at about 5 pm yesterday, the same two waitresses who I recognize from my previous visits over the years were there and waiting tables. But the cook and the manager/owner (??) looked different.....did the ownership change? --- I wonder. I ordered five typical Cantonese dishes and take them home for dinner. I guess I would give the food 3 stars. Nothing exceptionally good; nothing bad. The roast duck was a little dry and not well seasoned. The beef bitter melon was tasty but the bitter melon was not sliced nicely, but was sort of chopped haphazardly. I also ordered beef gailan (Chinese broccoli) and that was OK but the gravy was salty and heavy on the Haoyou (oyster sauce). Deep fried tofu was good, but the char siu (sweet roasted pork) slices were pretty sad and not very tasty. I also ordered some crab puffs for my wife who for some reasons likes that stuff -- they had no imitation crab in them, only cream cheese. So at least I satisfied my curiosity without being totally disappointed with the food. It was OK, but I will probably not be back. There are other better Cantonese food places nearby that I can frequent. read more

I brought my kids there recently and totally regretted it. The male boss cursed when we asked for the tapioca dessert. The waitress said something to him and he went on a loud cursing rant, calling her the B word and screaming the F and S words many times, all the while customers with little kids were there... It was horrific. I will not dine in there anymore when the male boss is present. He seemed intoxicated and violent. Don't go there if he is around. I was there a couple of years ago, walked in , sat dawn, got up and left. The reason was the attitude we got from the female waitress, felt like the owner. She was very rude and unfriendly. I just asked if they had different menu for Chinese customers, the woman threw the menu on the table and very loudly answered "What Chinese menu? This is the menu!" I got up and told my husband "Let's go!" This weekend, when my friend asked me to join them for dinner in this place, I firmly answered NO and asked her to reconsider. They went. My family likes the food here, but it is definitely a hostile environment. The Chinese male owner of the restaurant is a disrespectful person, not only is he rude, but he swears and make racist remarks loudly in the dining area where customers, families and kids can hear his every word. If he is around, this place definitely is not a kids friendly restaurant. I don't understand how such a person can run business with his attitude. But then again, he's not working or helping out there. He's only there to yell at his customers and staff. He has major issues, very bitter individual.
