In the area and wanted to pick up Chinese. Of course I stopped in at Tao Tao to get their famous chicken salad, tao tao beef, asparagus chicken and pork chow mein. The salad had the right amount of mustard punch, the beef was tender, asparagus with black bean sauce was yummy but the chow mein could have used a bit more flavor. The restaurant wasn't too busy inside but the outside was popping with patrons while enjoying music in the street summer series. Service was quick and all the necessary extras were included without asking. I do suggest that the chicken salad be placed in a separate bag from the hot food to maintain the crunch especially if a patron drives 15 miles home. Tao Tao has very Americanized Chinese food and has been here before the 70's. They are known for their chicken salad, mai tais and Tao Tao beef. They have the white tablecloths and formal waiters. We came before the 4th of July weekend. My kids enjoy the dinner with the chicken salad, wonton soup, pressed almond duck, lemon chicken, Tao Tao beef, and fried rice. The waiter said it was a lot of food when we also ordered the shrimp foo young and it was. It's very Americanized and not dishes I cook. Some people think there's a sauce or dressing in the chicken salad but there's not. It's just the combination of ingredients. I came to have lunch with some friends. We were a party of six and ordered the deluxe family meal plan that came with seven dishes. Everything was so delicious! The first dish served was Chinese Chicken Salad, very tasty just the way that I have remembered it. This Chinese restaurant has been around for a very long time on Murphy Ave and quality of the food is still delicious. The Tao Tao beef is one of my favorites along with the honey walnut prawns. Shrimp fried rice and chow mien were fine. The veggie dish was yummy, I liked the snow peas, broccoli, and asparagus combo. They don't write down your reservation. They tried to stick us by the dish cart and kitchen door (second time these problems occurred). The food was good tasting but I didn't receive even a teaspoon of chicken in the chicken salad. The order wasn't written down correctly so out came a mistake. The lighting is a cheap, horrible laboratory kind of cost effective factory lighting. The tea was very good and so was the red sauce. The service was brisk and not talkative.......civil without warmth. The ambience and noise are not conducive with a fine dining night out. I got there right when it opened. Sat at the bar and had my usual Mai tai cuz when you're here that's a thing. So is Tao Tao beef and chicken salad which is exactly what i did. Bartender was very attentive and as always the kitchen did an excellent job with the preparation of my items. Gosh, we have loved Tao Tao for over 10 years. It is our go to whenever friend's visit because the food is consistently good. We adore the Chicken Salad, of course. It cannot be replicated and is divine. We also love the won ton soup with pork. The won tons are generously stuffed with filling and the broth is very delicate. We always get fried rice because that is one of my favorite foods in the entire world. We also get snow beans or green beans in a garlic sauce that is out of this world.
