In the area and wanted to pick up Chinese. Of course I stopped in at Tao Tao to get their famous chicken salad, tao tao beef, asparagus chicken and pork chow mein. The salad had the right amount of mustard punch, the beef was tender, asparagus with black bean sauce was yummy but the chow mein could have used a bit more flavor. The restaurant wasn't too busy inside but the outside was popping with patrons while enjoying music in the street summer series. Service was quick and all the necessary extras were included without asking. I do suggest that the chicken salad be placed in a separate bag from the hot food to maintain the crunch especially if a patron drives 15 miles home. If you are looking for good home cooked Chinese food Tao Tao Cafe is highly recommended. read more

Tao Tao has very Americanized Chinese food and has been here before the 70's. They are known for their chicken salad, mai tais and Tao Tao beef. They have the white tablecloths and formal waiters. We came before the 4th of July weekend. My kids enjoy the dinner with the chicken salad, wonton soup, pressed almond duck, lemon chicken, Tao Tao beef, and fried rice. The waiter said it was a lot of food when we also ordered the shrimp foo young and it was. It's very Americanized and not dishes I cook. Some people think there's a sauce or dressing in the chicken salad but there's not. It's just the combination of ingredients. Sometimes the dishes are a hit or miss and some complain there's not enough meat in some dishes. I like to come back for the Chicken salad and Diet Coke. read more

I came to have lunch with some friends. We were a party of six and ordered the deluxe family meal plan that came with seven dishes. Everything was so delicious! The first dish served was Chinese Chicken Salad, very tasty just the way that I have remembered it. This Chinese restaurant has been around for a very long time on Murphy Ave and quality of the food is still delicious. The Tao Tao beef is one of my favorites along with the honey walnut prawns. Shrimp fried rice and chow mien were fine. The veggie dish was yummy, I liked the snow peas, broccoli, and asparagus combo. Fried chicken was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, delicious! We still had plenty of leftovers and we give it to a friend that was retiring. We were celebrating her retirement. Overall, I would come back when I am craving for some Chinese food, especially the Chinese Chicken Salad and the Tao Tao Beef dishes. Many tables inside. Service is great. read more

They also remodeled recently, and I love the bright new decor! Served table side, the Chicken Salad did not disappoint. They do use Chinese Mustard in their dressing, so keep that in mind if you aren't a fan. For me, this was simply yum! The Tao Tao Beef is also one of their signature dishes. Tender morsels or beef with a pleasing Chinese BBQ flavor, it was a great choice. The Lemon Chicken had a nice, crispy crust, with a sweet and tangy lemon sauce. We finished every bite. We enjoyed our all of our dishes, but I thought the Minced Pork and Green Bean dish was more chili flavor and less savory for my taste. Having been a customer when I'm in town, since 1985, I can say... They have the best Chicken Salad from anywhere. The Tao Tao Beef our second favorite. Some recent pictures of my non-salad loving, 16 year old picky son... loving and wanting a whole large for himself! 5.23.2026: I didn't realize this was still in my Drafts... I got there right when it opened. Sat at the bar and had my usual Mai tai cuz when you're here that's a thing. So is Tao Tao beef and chicken salad which is exactly what i did. Bartender was very attentive and as always the kitchen did an excellent job with the preparation of my items. Looks like the bench seat in the bar is going through a lil upgrade, hopefully it's done soon. At the end I got a brandy alexander for desert. I love this place. They don't write down your reservation. They tried to stick us by the dish cart and kitchen door (second time these problems occurred). The food was good tasting but I didn't receive even a teaspoon of chicken in the chicken salad. The order wasn't written down correctly so out came a mistake. The lighting is a cheap, horrible laboratory kind of cost effective factory lighting. The tea was very good and so was the red sauce. The service was brisk and not talkative.......civil without warmth. The ambience and noise are not conducive with a fine dining night out. Unfortunately, the Tossed Shredded Chicken Salad was so spicy I could only eat two bites, plus the chicken looked unappetizing and tasted kind of icky. The chicken pieces seemed to be a combination of both white and dark meat, which I don't understand and definitely didn't like. This is the quintessential Chinese American joint. They have HUGE portions and tasty nostalgic food. I especially like the chicken salad but beware it has a lot of hot mustard so if you don't like horseradish flavor the salad probably isn't for you. I was so sad that it had changed but it is as good as it used to be again! Everything is so good with the exception of the fried calamari. We only ate a couple of pieces, didn't even eat more than one bite. It was not what they used to happen years ago, they change it, it was not a fraction of what it used to be. But everything else I've ever had it's the best, like their potstickers they are amazing!! the texture of their rapper is just perfect it's a perfect blend of melt in your mouth and crispy! I've tried to recreate the beef and have never been able to come close. They have a huge menu and everything is very good. Lunch specials are served quickly and they are very organized.
