Express Line 2

6/4/2025 First Wok 653 S. Bernardo Avenue Sunnyvale, CA 94087 I went there on a Wednesday evening to try their chow mein. It's at the back of the Safeway/Cherry Chase Center, lots of parking. It looks like a mostly take out place, nobody was there dining in. It's a clean table and chair setup with a slight Asian temple incense odor from an arrangement at the back of the restaurant. They have a large assortment of entrees in their steam table pans for the Express Line meals. I ordered the House Special Combination Pan Fried Noodle to go, since I didn't want to be the only guy eating there. My food was ready in about 10 minutes and the bag felt heavy, good value. The noodles were crispy and got chewier as the gravy soaked in. The combination consisted of shrimp, beef, chicken, pork, broccoli, celery, mushroom, cabbage, green onion and onion in a mild and tasty gravy. I was happy with my chow mein (good for 2+ meals) and would repeat for their other Cantonese dishes.

Food very delicious I couldn't wait to eat it before taking a picture !! Service is great also

Let's get a few things straight first: * This is not a fine dining establishment so I'm comparing it against other casual dining spots (but expect more than fast food) * I tend to avoid buffets, even pre COVID, as you don't know how long it's been sitting there. * I'm not worrying about authenticity -- just food I enjoy eating. I will let others decide if it's truly Chinese. I was craving Chinese and, with Mandarin Gourmet closed, I don't have a go-to spot. We decided to try First Wok based on reviews. And, of course, we ordered way too much so we could sample the menu. On to the food: Hot & sour soup -- the large is enough for 3-4 people. I liked the spiciness but wish it had a bit more egg and a few more mushrooms. Chicken rice noodle -- essentially stir fry with rice noodles instead of rice or noodles. A surprisingly flavorful dish. Mixed vegetable with tofu -- the only dish we wouldn't repeat. Not bad but just not remarkable. Vegetables were good but the tofu was bland. Sautéed three ingredient -- prawns, scallops, and squid with a ton of snow peas and some carrots. The oyster sauce was very good. Did I say it was a LOT of snow peas? BBQ pork with string beans -- sliced BBQ pork with a generous amount of string beans. Quite good but I would have enjoyed a little more spice; maybe more garlic? The above was enough food for two people over three meals, and we ate well each time. If you don't mind buffets, you can walk in and order a three item combo. It's fast and easy, even during COVID times. As Arnold would say, I'll be back.

Not a nice experience

Food is consistently good at First Wok. My favorite is their Ginger Beef and the Rice Vermicelli vegetable noodles.

This is not sanitary! Nail trimming should not be done over a trash can where customers can see and hear while having food served.

Are they still in operation? They were closed when I came today around 6 pm, despite having a sign saying they were open 7 days.

Yes they are open although there was a small period of time they were not open (without any signage stating why) during the time you visited. However they are back at it and making excellent sesame shrimp, ginger beef, roast pork chow men and… Read more

The combination of meat, veggies and the exterior crispy pancake created such an outstanding tasting effect. The lamb dish had one of the most tender meats I've tasted. The brown sugar sticky rice cake was soft inside and hard outside; with just the right amount of sweetness. Service was ok. They should've been kinder and more grateful. I liked how they have a sign posted on window saying that gratuity is at free will and you don't pay for the wrong dish they send to you. It showed accountability. That's why we keep coming back, for now.

There was no line for us to be seated. I was able to flag down a server to seat us since they seem to be extremely busy cleaning tables and servicing others. The hotpots are full of ingredients and the broth has always been tasty. Unfortunately, the meats seem to be overcooked. Prices have been going up over the years where only the monthly special is enticing for the value. Servers were friendly and checked in on us, but it took 25 minutes for our food to show up at our table after we ordered. The only consistent experience I've had are the oranges at the end of the meal. They are always amazingly sweet, juicy, and comes off the peel easily. I don't usually enjoy oranges, but I love the ones HomeEat offers! Will be back if in the area, but hope kitchen service will be quicker in the future.

We knew to go early, since they don't take reservations and we often see lines outside. We arrived at 10:30am and the front manager said if we can be done my 12:30, that they had a table for us. Party of 12, since we got there early, we agreed. The side room had the biggest round table for us. They ask you what kind of tea you want, we like chrysanthemum tea. You order the items on the paper menu and it comes to your table. So we got going on the orders and TBH, we must be hungry, because we did a lot of orders (we had plenty of left overs). Tried some favorites and a few new items that we thought were unique to their restaurant. My dad has to order crispy noodle and chow fun, and we also ordered chicken fried rice. The service was prompt and attentive, with enough servers to take care of the side room. Since it was the "sun room", the sun was shining through the windows and it was bright. Review from my parents: it was just meh, they prefer the other place near our house. I think the food is good, but probably won't come back again with a big group of us, since they don't have many big round tables. And personally, I prefer the whole experience of the ladies coming around with their carts. Perhaps their dinner menu is also worth trying. Bonus for us is that we can literally walk to this restaurant. Parking could be an issue if you come later.

Ironically, I'm not a fan of them myself--they're a bit too eggy for my taste. When it comes to dim sum quality and service, I honestly prefer Koi Palace. The food quality there is more consistent, and the service is much more phenomenal. The only things this place really has over Koi Palace are the lower prices and those black sesame custard buns my friend loves! I've been here at least a dozen times, and the food can be hit or miss. Sometimes dishes come out cold, like they've been sitting out for a while instead of being served fresh and hot. That said, there are a few items we always order that are consistently good when brought out fresh like salted crispy pork chops, siu mai, shrimp rolls, and fried calamari. Be prepared for a wait on weekends since it gets crowded. If you're coming with a large group, it's best to arrive before noon. The restaurant is located next to a hotel, and finding the restroom can be confusing since it's inside the hotel. Service is also pretty minimal--they seem understaffed, and I almost always have to flag someone down just to get basics like soy sauce, chili, and water. I don't understand why they don't just have the sauce on the table for guest to dip, but I get that they're saving $ on controlling the cost down. On my most recent visit, the experience really went downhill. Our table had food but no soy sauce, chilli nor water, and when I flagged a waiter multiple times, he got visibly annoyed and irritated. It was frustrating--we shouldn't have to chase someone down repeatedly for basic condiments. Being met with attitude for that honestly left a bad impression. That experience alone makes me reconsider coming back. Good food at a good price is one thing, but poor service--especially to that extent--can really ruin the overall experience.

At 10:50, there was a huge crowd of people waiting to be seated, 30+ and 20+ orders to go. We did not get our order until after 12:10. They forgot our bbq pork buns. We called and they will credit our cc. Fook kin rice was good. Salt & pepper pork was a little soggy. Dim sum was okay. All of it was not hot and fresh. It was still good because it did not taste frozen or have msg. We think this is one of the better dim sum restaurants in the area.

We arrived around 1 PM on a Sunday and were told it would be a 20-25 minute wait. That was fine. But when we were seated we noticed the carts did not have much food. So we ordered 4 dim sum items off the menu. No one told us how long it would take to get these items. We ordered traditional dim sum items and at most dim sum places it would just take a few minutes. But after 20 minutes, nothing had arrived. We asked one of the workers and he angrily told us it takes a long time to prepare them. After 5 minutes one item showed up. But after waiting 20 minutes we decided to leave. As we were paying the bill, another item showed up so we just took it home. What bothered me most was no one apologized for the long wait, offered to somehow compensate, etc. They just acted like another day at Saigon Seafood Harbor.
