A solid choice for a good Milk Tea. The boba is average, but I still can't resist it. A tea to keep an eye out for is the Ice Cream Milk Tea. Though it is a dollar more than any of the other teas, it comes with a scoop of vanilla ice cream drenched with Milk Tea. Just ok. Went with a coworker, it's near my office. I ordered the pork with rice and a boba thai tea. Because I did not explicitly state that I wanted the combo, the cashier charged me the a la carte price for my food and drink, costing about 30% more than usual. When I used a credit card, it took them about 5 minutes to run it. It then took about 15 minutes for my very simple food to come out. Since they only have like 10 dishes on their menu, you'd think it would be a bit quicker. The pork was about 1/3 meat, 1/3 fat and 1/3 connective tissue. I was not impressed. However the boiled cabbage and rice with ground pork made up for it just slightly. Therefore I'm giving them 2 stars instead of 1. read more

First thing, its a popular place. I've been here around midnight to find crows of people here still.. And a party bus once. Despite that, the place has decent drinks and food. Tasty fried finger foods and boba makes a good combo. It may be hard to enjoy since the place itself is rather small with few tables and can get crowded and loud. But unless your in high school or a college freshman, you wouldn't be there during those hours i suppose. The rundown: I've been to this place a few times now. It is next door to my previous favorite Boba place (Green Tea House, RIP). This place ain't bad as far as Boba goes but there could be improvements. The location: On Convoy. It may be tough to spot, so keep a lookout. The parking sucks soooo bad around this particular spot so it might be helpful to park on the street instead of the lot. The inside of the place is actually pretty big and is busy most of the time, mostly young kids. It's nice and bright and I usually have my head glued to the strange yet addicting Asian music videos they have on display. Prices: Everything here is pretty affordable. The snacks are yummy and the boba is pretty good. I haven't had the full meals there but the quality to price ratio is pretty even. The Goods: The food is great here. The boba is great. You must get the crispy chicken snack, it's fabulous! I eat a lot of spicy food, but even the medium setting is masochistically good! The Bad: Improve customer service is biggest issue. A lot of the workers seem young (not that it means anything bad) but they don't seem very happy to help customers. They aren't upbeat. Coming from sales/customer service background I notice these things. I'm darn good at it so I can recognize bad service when I see it. They also take names down in order to call orders, however almost every time I miss my name because they either forget or they just don't yell it loud enough! I waited almost 15 minutes extra one time when I didn't realize my delicious crispy chicken was waiting for me to devour it! Just improve this and we'll be on good terms. I come here every now and then when I'm craving my Strawberry Snow Bubble and Crispy Chicken Rice Combo fix, or my other drink alternative, a Taro Snow Bubble. I've been going here for the past four years now and I have to say this place has it's good days and it has it's bad days. Parking is a b* during the evening and afternoon hours but it's manageable, there's another lot next to it that you can park at, or the small lots across the street if you don't feel like dealing with finding parking during the busy hours. The atmosphere is just like any other boba shop, at night is when it's lively... and crowded. Since TapEx is located near the SDSU campus, expect a lot of college students and A LOT of asians (not to be stereotypical or anything). I'm a fan of their drinks, but I haven't tried them all quite yet. I've been limiting myself to their rather large (I think) selection of snow bubbles, which are amazing! I also believe they're reasonably priced for the drink sizes they offer, although it can get pricey at times when you're with a big group of people. The #1 thing I like most about this place is that they put REAL STRAWBERRIES in the Strawberry Snow Bubble, this is the first boba shop I've been to that does that. read more

Love this place! Great drinks. Great service. Good food. Also, it's a great place to go with friends. People bring their laptops or you can ask the cashier or whoever if you can borrow one of the games (Jenga, Connect 4, Uno, etc.). But you can only exchange it with a photo I.D. What I've noticed is that every location has different food options (meal wise). But usually they will always have their crispy chicken and calamari and those are the bomb. Yesterday I tried their new drink which is a Milk Frosti or Frosti Milk? I chose the strawberry version. So it was pretty much a strawberry icey with milk, boba, custard jello, and fresh strawberries. Tip: You HAVE to mix it with your straw or else it won't taste as good. read more

Tapioca Express is expanding into SoCal I remembered they started out in Sac and I was ecstatic when they opened one up in San Jose right near the Great Mall. Sorta. I love TapEx! This location in particular is pretty big and can seat a good amount of people. It definitely can get busy though which is a good sign that people love their boba because there are soooo many boba places in this area now. Just like any TapEx, there are so many flavors to choose from and I've tried a few which are all delicious. Some of the faves: Almond Milk Tea, Thai Tea and Avocado Snow Bubble. Their boba is the perfect texture as well and not too sweet which I like. From my experiences, the customer service has been great. They usually have a lot of people working so the drinks come out quickly. I've been a TapEx customer for years now and will continue to go here to satisfy my Almond Milk Tea cravings. :) read more

I came here pretty often during freshmen and sophomore year of college. I have been back a few times after graduating college when I'm in the area. Parking is probably the hardest obstacle you have to overcome at this Tapioca Express. I usually park on the side streets and walk on over. If you come on a Friday or Saturday night its so packed that you have people literally just walking across the parking lot. Finding a spot during the day/night/week is extremely difficult. The Rice combos are a good portion for the price but you can literally taste the MSG(MSG tastes so good, yet it is so bad for you). They do have an extensive drink and food menu with lots of variety. With that being said, their drinks are average at best. You can taste the powder in some of the milk tea's and in some of the snow bubbles/smoothies; depending on how well they blend it. However, the price of their drinks are also cheaper than other places that do not use powder. If you are getting an ICY drink with boba be weary that the boba tends to get hard due to the ice if you take too long to drink it. Customer service is always good here. They are friendly, helpful, and efficient. There is indoor as well as outdoor seating. They can get busy at night on Friday and Saturday but they get through the lines fairly quickly. read more

I do love their iced jasmine tea - it's like drinking that sweet, tropic aroma that hits you when you step off the plane in Hawaii. The interior is well designed, with an earthy modern feel. The atmosphere is usually loud, with kpop blaring and people trying to be heard over it, but it's a nice vibe for an evening with friends. What was once a cool hip and happenin place with ecclectic music, wild art painted on the walls and multi televisions serving as one large screen for music videos frequented by the younger college bound age group has become a dull, quiet establishment frequented now by families and a more mature college crowd. Despite the drastic change in atmosphere, one thing hasn't changed and it's their boba and tasty finger foods. I personally love the Almond Milk Tea, so try that, if not, there's a vast selection of flavors and types of drinks that you can order with or without boba. This is probably one of my favorite places to get a good boba here in San Diego, and a lot of it has to do with the quality of the drinks they put out. While Milk Tea with boba is always a good go-to-drink whenever at any boba joint (and Tapioca Express doesn't disappoint), more often than not I come to these sorts of places to satisfy my green apple slush fix, and hands down Tapioca Express has the best one. More often than not, when I go to most boba places and order the green apple slush I end up with something so disgustingly sweet and syrupy you can practically feel your teeth rotting out, but this place has it down perfect. You really can't beat the snow bubble here- there's something about it that's just so much better than the slush drink on its own. As far as the food goes here, it's alright but definitely not worth the extra dough given your location on convoy. Seriously, if you're looking to eat something, Tapioca Express really isn't the place to go. The one exception, however, are the chinese doughnuts. I haven't had them in a while, but man are they good! Not exactly the healthiest thing on the menu, but if you're craving something hot and sweet to snack on I'd definitely get an order. This place does get pretty loud and pretty crowded, but since it seems to be the "hot" place to be on Convoy I'm not really surprised. I always get the Thai boba tea. Thai tea is my favorite. I have had boba tea a lot here and back in the Vancouver-Portland area. This place is not too bad nor do I think it is the greatest. I am a fan of this place. It's true. I just keep coming back. I'm not usually the type of person to get cravings. I just get hungry and I eat. But these blended milkshakes are something different. They just randomly pop into my head, and I've gotta have one. Once that happens, my next immediate thought is: Tapioca Express. I usually stick to the creamy blended shakes, I don't even know what they're called. I'll remember once I get there and read the menu. One of the best flavors is Honey Dew Melon. This place is usually crowded especially during late night hours. Apparently, this is the hangout place for Asian kids. They have wifi, board games and Asian dance video on TV. The wear and tear of this place is very apparent. The restroom is the typical disgusting restroom at authentic Chinese restaurants. I'm not racist, I'm just speaking the truth. After all, I am Taiwanese. On a whole, this place should only get 2 1/2 stars but my love for their popcorn chicken and fishcake are too great to not increase it to 4 stars. The popcorn chicken here is not fatty and has the traditional Taiwanese flavor. The Thai basil flavor is apparent but I wish they would fry it with the chicken and make it part of the order (they do sometime but it's not consistent). Please be mindful of their spicy level, medium is actually pretty spicy. So you are warned! The fish cake is not as thick as I would I like it to be but it still has an excellent flavor. Sometime they do over fried this, which takes away the chewiness in the middle. For US standard, this is pretty darn good. Since I can't always go back to Taiwan, this will have to do. You can get these items as a meal (about $7) or as a snack (about $4). The meal comes with rice, veggie, a fried egg (no running yolk unfortunately) and your choice of black tea, green tea or water. My recommendation is order these two items and get it To-Go! *Be prepare, parking is a nightmare in this lot. read more

I am so picky with my boba places! I have tried so many and I always come back to TapEx. It is the best tasting with the best prices. I have been coming here for over 2 years now! My favorite menu items would be the Thai tea snow bubble or milk tea, and the matcha snow bubble. My dad is obsessed with the almond milk. I always add boba as well! The cream cheese wontons are delicious as well. The customer service is pretty good.... The only con is the parking and sometimes the super long line with only one girl on register. read more
