I was walking and decided to try this restaurant as it didn't look very busy from the out side. Once I walk in the lobby it was clean and beautiful with many Miltary photos of our military veterans and some civilians veterans. I love Vincent Fernandez photo on the back wall. They catered to me and told me I could sit any where, my waiter (Cesar) came to the table right away. I ask what special the had and it was the 3 crispy tacos in which you could choose beef or chicken. I ask the waiter if I could try the taco to see which one I like the best as the special was with 3 tacos and rice and beans with salad. He was very accommodating, the beef has the greatest flavor as the chicken had too much salt and I could not eat it. I did not tell them as I did not want to go through the hassle of going through that. The food I received was cold the rice and beans and the chicken taco, the beef was hot, they took the rice and beans back to warm it up and give me another plate due to them not putting the salad on the side of the plates as I had ask for them to put it separately dues to experience I had before at other restaurants, water mixing with food, it happens at other Mexican restaurants I have visited. As you can see in the photos some of the things I have been stating. *The employee (Ceasar). Is very pleasant and a good waiter I give him a (5) in customer service. *The restrooms were clean, I wish it would have match the dinning area, but I gave it a (5) as it was clean. *As for the appearance of the inside of the restaurant I give them a (5) *As for the score of the food I gave it a (0) due to the food should have been hot when I received it and the cook should have or taken temperature to assure the food meet this requirements. We had an amazing experience here. I went for lunch with two friends and we were immediately greeted by friendly staff. The menu is full of great options. I tried the 4 mini tacos. And they are some of the best tacos I've ever had. My friends got burritos. They were really good as well. We really loved the atmosphere. So RUDE!! Me and my husband always go here for breakfast tacos, and the service has always been changing. Sometimes of course the servers are actually happy and nice, however sometimes they're short and rude when they talk (and its always the same guy, or a young thinner girl thats rude and ruin the experience) . I always chalk it up to them having a rough day and as someone who worked as a restaurant I literally never said anything, but today literally irritated me. I called to place a breakfast order, our spanish is not horrible but its definitely not fluent, the whole order the person on the phone on their end (some guy) took our order completely in spanish. He had asked us something about or card information over the phone but I couldn't understand what he was saying on the last part so we asked if he spoke english for the last part, he sounded like he got irritated and hung up immediately. I understand the language barrier but I asked him in spanish and apologized in Spanish so I dont understand why he cancelled our order?? Came here on a business lunch. Ordered the 4 mini tacos, half and half meat. Here's how it went: The Good: - prices were great. Not going to break the bank here if you have a family - seated right away at 11:10am on a Monday. We beat the rush - service was very quick and friendly - large glasses of water - chips and salsa were delicious with some spice but not too much, chips were not your normal - both meats on my tacos were so tasty I didn't need any sauces; more meat than the tacos could hold. - tacos came with cilantro, both grilled and fresh onions, and lime. I loaded it all on top and it was great - you will not tip your chair over backwards. Very solid - decorations were fun - they love military members - they speak Spanish or English - drive thru if you want it The Not So Good: - not a lot of seating inside. Stopped in for breakfast on our way to Lackland. Fast, friendly service. HUGE portions and tortillas (de harina of course). The bacon (on my bean & cheese taco) was exactly crisp as requested. Generous cheese, BUT unmelted. The chorizo (very nice spicing and very low grease) in my papas con chorizo taco was a perfect ratio to the potatoes, mas chorizo que papas! Coffee was robust, tasty, and VERY hot, but disappointed that it was served in styrofoam cups instead of cups or classic diner mugs. First of all, both the name, and the address of this Mexican restaurant is questionable. If you look up the restaurant's location on Google Earth, it lists their location at 1401 Springvale San Antonio, Texas. On Yelp however, the location is 150 Valley Hi. Either way, it is located on Valley-Hi at Springvale, right outside Lackland AFB. Second, the name of the restaurant is also confusing. I had a hard time finding it on Yelp. There was some indication that they may also have a location on Marbach Rd. I went to the drive thru that's by Lackland AFB. I ordered some bean and cheese tacos and a couple of barbacoa. I was impressed that the receipt was itemized specific to my order. The tacos were individually labled. There were no prices listed on the receipt. The drive thru menu has hand written signage attached indicating their prices are subject to change without notice. Ok weird. My order was perfectly done as asked. The bean and cheese tacos were really good with some exceptions. One of the bean and cheese had hardly any cheese in it at all. The carne guisada inside the tacos was orange?!?!? I have never seen cardne guisada that color. The person who I ordered them for said they were terrible and tasted like fish, and couldn't eat them. I'm so disappointed. Granted I am a white guy, but I have been all over Mexico from La Paz, Mexico City, Mazatlan, and many more to include living 15 minutes from Tijuana, and when it comes to breakfast tacos...this is the place to go! The food is delicious and filling! Eggs are never over-cooked, bacon is done well, and so much cheese is on each one. Always satisfied with my visits at the Charro. Their portions are the definition of "Everything is bigger in Texas". I usually get burritos to-go but when I sit down, I jump on their entree plates. One of my favorites is their shrimp quesadillas plate. Definitely not your average-sized shrimp being used, and the amount of cheese they include keeps me coming back for more! So after passing this mexican restaurant a million times I decided to finally stop one morning to check out the breakfast menu! Boy was it delicious! I should have definitely stopped here the chest time I passed it. They have a drive thru and large parking lot to park. The inside is very clean and the staff is welcoming! They are all about military since its next to the base so for those that don't know Spanish, all the waiters speak English! The menus are military theme, super cute and a nice touch in support of our troops. Sweet tea was really good and after ordering meal came within 5 minutes. It was hot and fresh! The potatoes were soft and the beans were mixed with chorizo, which I loves! Over easy eggs made perfectly and the barbacoa was delicious! Not to much fat. The salsa was good as well not hot as all so I did have to put more then normal but its great for military families stopping in for a meal who aren't used to hot San Antonio salsa! $10 for my meal wasn't bad at all! This use to be one of our favorite restaurants and being right outside the military installation, it was not only convenient but delicious. This place has changed dramatically. The food was mediocre as well as customer service. Upon entering the restaurant and being seated, the waitress indicated that we had to scan a QR code to view the menu. In which she did not identify that prices may vary or change from their menu. So after viewing the menu decided to order a torta which was $5.99 with French fries for an additional $1.89. And, after placing our order, the waitress did not mention price increase on ALL items on the menu. (In which, fries arrived cold and soggy.) It wasn't till after we paid and in comparing the receipt with the menu is when we found out the price change. My husband approached the waitress and asked the price difference this is where she mentioned " oh, yeah, I forgot to tell you that the prices are different on the menu from what we charge". This is my first time eating here. It has decent parking and they have a drive thru. The interior was fairly clean. Every table was topped with the salt, pepper, napkins but at this restaurant they added hand sanitizer bottles to the mix. Service was quick and straight to the point. The waitress brought some complimentary chips and salsa. I ordered unsweet tea with a Carne Guisada Plate. The food came out super quick. The rice was pretty good, the beans were average and although the beef was tasty it was a bit on the low end of warm. It definitely could have been hotter. It had a funk to it, the funk smelled like well, I don't think I'm allowed to say what it smelled like. And to top it off, it was so bad that the whole table was able to smell it as well. With that being said, it seemed like everyone else's dish was alright. I think they were just really put off by the smell of my dish. The good points to hit on are that the horchata was good, refreshing and a big cup of it. The chips and salsa as an appetizer were probably the best part of the meal. I am not from Texas. Not even from the south. Prior to moving here, I though Taco Bell was "good" Mexican. It seems that every one of my coworkers who are native to this area have a different idea of what good Mexican or TexMex is so I can never get any consistency with their recommendations. Anyway, this place is very close to where I work so I have been here many times. Honestly, I have not had better, cheaper, Mexican food than this. I have never been disappointed by their meals. The taste is great, the portions large, and they tend to have a fair percentage of Spanish speaking patrons which is always a good sign. I love their Jalisco burrito. Awesome, size and taste. Also, their fajita quesadilla is very delicious. Oh, and their salsa is the bomb! Chips and salsa are free. Not for the faint of heart because it'll light you up if you aren't into spicy salsas. The staff has always been kind and courteous, always with a quick word in either English or Spanish. They have lunch specials daily, usually 2 or 3 of them. This is my "regular" lunch spot when I go out for lunch. Love t and WILL be back. Okay folks, this is my favorite place for low cost and reasonable mexican food in a sitdown environment and not fast food. Why? it is clean. I wouldn't be afraid to use the bathrooms. Enough said. They also have always served warm chips that are fresh, and very generous serving salsa. My favorite dish is usually a "meatless" burrito with peppers, onions, and mushrooms. They understand how to make w/o meat. I usually order a side of rice which is a generous serving. The food tastes really fresh and I can tell that it was just made and served for my enjoyment. Love this place for the food and the convenient location! Right down the road from Ft.Sam! We've had an assortment of dishes from the several times we've dropped in. The most notable ones being the smothered burrito, mini tacos, and horchata! They have tons of options to please any palette. "Rainy days and caldo always bring me-ee....... round." As we prepare for our annual tease of frozen precipitation this winter it is nice to have a bowl of the Mexican restorative when days are gloomy and grey. Tuesday was wet and messy so the natural lunch of choice was the big beefy bowl of caldo. When I was growing up we placed an emphasis on the cabbage and the potatoes because the soup bone was fairly sparse and what little meat was left after simmering all day was gelatinous and tough. In the professional kitchens, however, the soup bone is hearty and tender and becomes the star of the festival when placed between the comforting embrace of a hot fresh corn tortilla. (my gringo wife embarrasses me by ordering flour and crumbling them into her broth towards the end of the meal. Amateur!) Taqueria El Charro's broth is a tad spicy and has a little tomato flavor to it which is unusual but the effect is just the same. They load the bowl with meaty soup bone, large chunks of cabbage, thickly sliced carrots and fleshy potato halves. The ubiquitous side of rice and lemon wedges accompanies as well but I place those off to the side. Wedges! Wedges! We don't need no stinking wedges! read more

I love this place, I have been visiting Lackland Air Force Base off and on since 2005. Every time I come here I leave about ten pounds heavier because of this place alone. Breakfast, Awesome! Lunch, Awesome! Dinner, Awesome! If your drunk, eat here, if your sad, eat here, if your happy, eat here, if it's your anniversary eat here! My favorite is the green enchiladas, the carne asada burrito is a close second, I only get the burrito if I still want to move after eating. I can't recommend this place enough. Being in the Military I travel all over, when I miss Mexican food, this is the place I miss. If Anthony Bourdain ever comes to San Antonio for a layover show, he needs to come here.
