Tarka is a wonderful Indian restaurant! Probably one of the best one's I've ever been to. To make it even more special, Yelp Check-In's get 10% off (which came to my surprise!) People hyped it up, everyone was so ready for this place, and now, it has become a great place to eat in Austin. At first, I was a little hesitant to go (since I am not the guy who like spicy foods), but I went after church one Sunday, and it was a delightful place to go eat. Biryanis looked more like stirred rice doesn't have the right flavor, color or texture. This rice was also undercooked or old because the rice had a hard texture, not soft and fluffy. I know Yelp is doing its job when I'm actively finding restaurants I've never been to for dinner. Tonight, my tongue decided to be very picky and after 30 minutes of searching, I couldn't find a place that caught my eye. Not another night at Chipotle, is it? Well, when you're feeling lost, look to Anderson Lane. And once again, Anderson delivers. Tarka Indian Kitchen. Right in that Walmart complex. Very cheap; we're talking every entree on their menu with prices in the single digits. As fast as 5-7 minutes. Also 10% off in exchange for a Yelp check-in. What caught my eye specifically is their Lamb Saag. I also ordered the Garlic Naan to boot. Let me start this off by saying that tonight I was a lone diner. There was a small bar near the registers and were plenty of two-tops. Combined with the fairly small-sized crowd at dinner time, eating here alone was a pretty comfortable experience. Now the food... First impression is the quantity. I was expecting a small to medium sized bowl of the Lamb Saag, but instead I get a large, wide bowl HEAPED with my order. My jaw dropped for reals. Can I really eat all that? Are these orders meant to eat family-style? On a normal night, I would've ate half and packed the rest, but tonight, I'm feeling ambitious. If that wasn't enough, an order of the Garlic Naan is 4 slices. Bring it on. The Garlic Naan isn't as fluffy as those in other Indian places I've been, but the taste was good and the garlic wasn't burnt. The Lamb Saag was pretty delicious. The saag flavor was strong and there was plenty of lamb pieces. Every bite of lamb was great, and some of them had that coating of fat which made finding them a wonderful surprise. Mix it in with the rice and you got yourself a real meal. I ordered mine at medium spiciness and while it isn't really spicy at all, it does enhance the flavor of the dish. I did manage to finish everything and took a nice nightly stroll through Walmart to burn off some of that bloated feeling. What an evening. read more

This is NOT authentic Indian food. It is the Indian version of cheap, large-portioned, Americanized Chinese food. Expect that and you will probably be happy! You are getting what you pay for, and you are not paying much. I ordered matter paneer, korma with paneer, and an order of regular naan for takeaway. I asked for everything spicy; here that means they drop a couple slices of jalepeño in the curry, which does not make it spicy at all. Flavors are not complex, but they are good. The rice is free. The naan was great! I paid about $20 all told and had food for 4 meals. I can cook better Indian food, but it takes a long time, and this place is good for what it is...it's just important to be clear on what that is. Very good experience! They were busy on a Friday evening around 7 PM but the wasn't too long after we ordered. This was my first experience eating any type of Indian food (Americanized or authentic). It was very good and jam packed with flavor! It all came out fresh and hot. The Chicken Pokoras were okay. It was a bit dry. You need to eat with the sauce to enjoy. The Lamb Kabob Bowl was pretty good. I thought the lamb was a bit fatty but had a decent flavor. I enjoyed the veggies beneath the lamb more personally. The fries were crispy. The Tikka Masala was the hit of the night! It was so delicious. My fiancé and I shared it. Nice flavor. We enjoyed it with the Garlicky Naan Bread. Medium spice level was the perfect amount. I was so disappointed. I'd been in California for almost 5 months and was dreaming about Tarka's coconut curry and their basmati rice. Either they changed the recipe or I misremembered the curry. I remembered it as a spicy yellow curry flavored with potatoes, onion and garlic. What I got today was a tomato based curry. Just as spicy but heavy with tomato paste. I don't care for tomatoes. When I took it back to ask about it, thinking they had accidentally given me the tikka masala. I was told that their coconut curry has tomatoes in it and sometimes the tomatoes produce a dark red color. I checked the menu and nowhere does the coconut curry list tomatoes. This is my favorite Indian place to go to. Whenever my family is in town, we always enjoy eating here together. Now to be fair, I wouldn't call this authentic Indian food. If you're looking for a thali or dal chawal, I wouldn't recommend this place. That being said, the food here is delightful. You order at the front and they bring the food to you at your table. The restaurant always smells delicious and I have never had an order go wrong. My favorite dishes are the tikka masala and malai kofta. The sauce in these dishes are so creamy. Their biryani is very flavorful as well. Compared to other restaurants, I would call this place very affordable. I don't believe they have a single dish over $9. Tarka has a very easy-to-follow and easy-to-enjoy menu of North (mostly) Indian foods. The food is fresh and tasty, and you get to choose how spicy-hot your want it, and in many cases what particular type you of protein in the dish. My first and last experience with this Tarka did not go well. It started with a "comfort break" in a very dimly lit restroom, so dimly lit that the only light came from over the vanity behind a wall 20 feet from the stall. With lighting that abominable, one can only wonder about the overall sanitation. They made it to two stars only because their ordering process is a breeze. I knew exactly what I wanted, and the cashier made it easy. Caution: if you've never been to Tarka before, don't fall for the opportunity to overtip, because it's strictly self-service for everything except food delivery and table bussing. And, based on the cleanliness of my table, don't bet the farm on the bussing part of that deal. The food itself was a huge disappointment. The one positive is that the portion sizes here are daunting. The chicken tikka masala I encountered was served hot, but there was no way to plate it properly other than to slowly combine the separate bowls of rice and entree. For what should have been boneless chicken, I encountered at least two pieces of bone, which was disconcerting. The garlic naan I ordered tasted very much off-flavor (in all fairness, I noted the same thing at Tarka's south location, and considered that an anomaly). The naturally sweetened sodas were great to wash down the taste of regret. Seating is quite tight. I felt I was intruding on the lady sitting next to me, but she was truly at a different table and seated herself after I was already there. The high ceilings with little acoustic dampening make for a noisy dining environ. The general feel of the place is "busy". It's quite expensive at $17 for a fast-food lunch. I'd much rather go across the street to Star of India and get the buffet. I wouldn't go there for the quantity of food, but for the service, quality of the food, and more relaxed atmosphere. Dare I say you can judge by the clientele and staff which is the more authentic Indian dining experience. read more

I had the biryani one of my favorite Indian dishes, and it didn't taste like any biryani I've ever had before. When I arrived at Tarka, my order was not ready because the Postmates app does not tell them the pick-up time, and you can't specify one apparently. Service was sooooo nice! The lady at the register apologized and gave me a cup for a free drink. I asked her about how long I would have to wait, and she said 10 minutes because she would ask them to make my order with priority. I ended up waiting only about 5 minutes! Thank you!
