My friend and I ordered the chicken korma and chicken tikka masala. The mild option had no heat at all, but we figured better safe than sorry. The tikka masala had a delicious rich sauce, slightly sweet from coconut milk and plenty of small, bite-sized pieces of white meat chicken. The korma was just as good, not too rich from the cashews but satisfying. The mulligatawny had a thick strange texture but was earthy with a bright lemon note. I checked out Tarka Indian Kitchen on a Friday evening for a networking dinner. Tarka has its own parking lot so I didn't have any issues there. From the outside, it's an impressive looking restaurant. As you walk in, you order at the counter and then they bring your food out to you. Tarka is essentially fast-casual Indian food. I ordered the lamb tikka masala, a side of naan, and a mango lemonade. The restaurant is clean and modern. Tikka masala is a classic dish and I like that Tarka had an option other than chicken or veggie. Like you see at a lot of places, the portion size wasn't that large but the sauce was delicious. Great choice for an indian place and it's really affordable. I got the lamb coconut curry with a side of garlic naan. It was super filling and I even had leftovers to take home. My food came out in a timely manner. It was hot and the naan was crisp and thin. I did order a spicy level of medium but I didn't really taste a whole lot of heat. I love Taarka. Is it authentic Indian? No way. But it's still really good and reasonably priced. My go to dishes are the Chicken Korma and Chicken Tikka Masala. The Korma is a delicious, creamy sauce with great flavor. The Tikka Masala is your standard Tikka Masala, but it is thick and flavorful. I've had some that seem watered down, but Taarka's definitely is not. I don't have a very high spice tolerance and order both with medium spice. And of course, I have to pair them with Garlic Naan. Taarka also has a decent beer and wine selection. It's pretty small, but they have craft beer of different varieties and pretty good wine choices. read more

I decided to stop by this place because I was craving Indian food and it's right down the street from my job right off of 19th Street and North Shepherd. If you're looking for authentic Indian Cuisine this is not it!! think of it as fast food Indian cuisine aka mall food. Even though the portions do look small, trust me it's very filling they have a variety of curries to choose from. I believe it's around five or six curries, you pick your curry you pick your protein (chicken, beef, lamb) and it's all reasonably priced between nine and twelve dollars They also have vegetarian options for those who would like a meatless meal and they provide indoor and outdoor seating which is nice it's not the best Indian food in Houston however it does satisfy that quick craving that you may have so check it out read more

Food is excellent! Even when delivered it's still hot and fresh. Vegetable samosas, chicken tiki Marsala and saag paneer are all very good. My favorite though is the lamb biryani. My coworkers rave for the kabobs. Definitely try it if you're in the area! read more

As you walk up you order in the counter and the staff is very welcoming and helpful. I would say Tarka is a fast casual Indian food. Not the real real deal but it's still good! I've read that this could be described as the Pei Wei of Indian food, an unflattering comparison of making Asian food appealing to the non-Asian population which in this case applies to Indians because duhhh Indians are Asians too. After getting some items through Uber Eats, I agree. My mattar paneer was too sweet with the tomato curry and low on the peas. I think there was just too much sugar beyond the natural sweetness of the tomato, coconut and peas in the dish. Perhaps this could have been hidden if I had ordered a spice level beyond their medium, but their medium just gave me a tingly aftertaste. I had also ordered vegetable pakoras, but for some reason they showed up in the form of vegetable samosas which were tasty. The delivery also did not come with utensils which makes me wonder about their to-go prep protocol. If you want great counter service Indian food albeit pricey without going to Hillcroft, go to Pondicheri. If River Oaks is too froufrou, then really just go to Hillcroft. read more

Good choices and flavor in the dishes. Personally most of the dishes are too creamy, sweet, and oily, prefer a lighter meal with the same flavor. The mint chutney tastes like sugar syrup. Dishes need more cilantro, ginger, and garlic. Good when craving Indian food in a pinch, but the dishes could be improved. read more

Really enjoyed going to Tarka in Austin, so it was great to try it again in Houston. Gotta love the 10% off with Yelp check-in. My go-to is the chicken Tikka Masala at the highest spice (it really isn't that spicy though, so don't worry). The curry comes with basmati rice. Chicken Tikka masala was tasty but overly salty and I really like salty, so if I say too much, it's TOO much. Rice was not even close to being able to match the sauce. Avg amount of meat. Chicken vindaloo was ok. Not as salty, but lacking a little in flavor. Too many bell peppers. Masala fries, not a fan of the masala on it, but I liked how soft the fries were and it went great with the chicken Tikka sauce. Garlic naan was a waste of money. I ordered the tarka daal, which comes with some basmati rice, and I also ordered a paratha. The tarka daal was actually surprisingly a little spicy. I've never really had spicy Indian food before so that was a nice surprise. It was very flavorful and had more spice than usual daal. The paratha was smaller than I thought it be, and crispier. It was very thin, almost like the thin crust of a pizza. I'm used to a slightly thicker one that is still crispy on the outside and has a chew to it. I do recommend getting it because it goes well with daal and other curries, but it's a little small and thin. I love the aesthetic of tarka kitchen. I never been to a fast causal Indian restaurant before. The concept is simple, you order up front and they give you a number. My bf and I ordered the masala fries, paneer tikka masala, the chicken coconut curry and a side of garlic nann. I liked the seasoning on the fries, it had a nice kick, but I wish the fries were thick cut. The chicken curry was delicious! The flavor was well balanced and seasoned right. I didn't try my bf's paneer, but he said he liked it alot. The garlic nann was okay, it was flat. I like my nann to be puffy and fluffy. Overall, the food was great. My only gripe was the time it took to get our food. It felt a little longer than 30 minutes. This is counter service. I had the Korma curry with lamb. It comes with basmati rice. I ordered garlic naan. Food was good, but the curry was way too sweet. I ordered medium heat level, but it was too mild. I would get hot next. I asked for some sauces and they brought me a yogurt mint sauce and another mint sauce which was sweet. Both were really good. This mint sauce would go great with some grilled items as it was tangy and sweet. While they have kabobs, I don't know if they are grilled or prepared in a tandoor. read more

I love me some Tarka. Tarka is a quick "Smash Burger" style Indian food place. IMO, the food tastes great. The naan is hit or miss on the greasiness, but I love it all the same. I typically order the tikka masala spicy with lamb and I haven't had a dish that I haven't liked yet. They also serve Bungalow soft drinks which were quite tasty to sample. I love Tarka. I stop by for takeout now and again and have been super happy with my visits. It's clean, efficient, easy for ordering and tasty - if a bit Americanized - versions of my favorite Indian dishes. The menu is very user friendly and customizable. It's kind of an Indian Pei Wei but with more and better options. Everything can be ordered with your spice preference, choice of protein/veggie and GF/veg/nut dishes are all marked. Here are some of my favorites: - Pakoras: not really healthy but GF and vegan and delicious mix of potatoes and onions and a great chutney on the side. - Sag w Paneer: this is my all time favorite made just the way I like it. I prefer mild. The rice is perfectly streamed, sticky and seasoned. Can't go wrong with this combo. - Samosa chaat: I like these street food rockstars because you get all the flavors combined into one yummy appetizer. - Biryani: good favor and veggies, also easy to keep for lunch next day. Some things that were good but not sure I have to have next time: - Side salad: inexpensive and ok if you want something green. Your basic side salad. - Dal: good and I ate it all but it's a healthier and less gluttonous choice vs my favorites. - Garlic naan: a little chewy and a little burned but i think it's supposed to be that way. Good flavor. You can order online or in person. It's fast and everyone is helpful. I get takeout but lots of folks dine in. While at Smoothie King across the parking lot, we could smell the aroma of Curry coming from this establishment. There was nothing else left to do but order some food. Those smoothies weren't going to fill us up. We ordered the bharani rice with lamb along with curry chicken, and garlic naan. Biryani rice with lamb was okay, it was super spicy. My absolute favorite thing was the white basmati rice which was cooked with cumin. It was delightful. And went along with the curry chicken and dahl perfectly. The naan was okay, it wasn't very fluffy or flavorful. Those pictures that people post sure reeled me in, but the naan was just okay.
