First time at this restaurant. The samosas were good, but I was disappointed by the mango lemonade which was basically just plain old mango juice. I also ordered the Matar Paneer to be medium spicy, but when I got it it was actually on the sweeter side. They completely forgot to add spice and it was so bland. It's not "authentic", but it is FAST, and consistent quality Indian. You can choose your spice level, there are vegetarian/vegan options. Three choices of freshly made breads, or if you are going "gluten-free", the basmati is well-seasoned. Rasmalai is pretty labor-intensive to make, so that was a pleasant surprise on the dessert options. The Paneer Tika Masala took me by surprise! For only $8 I expected a very small portion with only a few pieces of paneer (indian restaurants typically charge $12-16 for this same dish). It was so hot and full of warm soft paneer. The masala was also very good! It was noticibly sweeter than any masala I've ever had, but still tasty. I think next time I'll just request they add a little more spice. Hopefully that'll help give it a more authentic taste. I regularly ate at, & really liked, the Tarka in Round Rock, TX when I lived there. Now that I live in San Antonio, I regularly eat at, & really like,this one. The quality & taste of the food is consistent throughout the chain. I have tried a couple of local family-owned restaurants here & the taste of standard fare dishes is always very different than what I'm used to or what I prefer. To each his own. Saturday at high noon---Walked in not knowing it was "order at the counter"then take your seat with a number. Picked out 2 dishes, got our drinks at the drink dispenser. That tell you more about this place. Sat down with my wife away from adults with their progeny. Counted at least a dozen no neck curtain climbers. The food is brought to your table. Plenty of it. We dig in. Not bad. Eat on. Okay. Eat on. Not the greatest. Eat on. Afraid to eat too much. Start picking. Had enough. Not as good as the first bite. Filling in a not so good way. Worried about after shock and available facilities. Left for ice cream shop to counteract any possible bloating and gas. No more Tarka. Tarka no more. Indian food in name only. Om, om, om, om, om! That is the sound I make digging into my latest take-out order from Tarka. I've ordered the kabobs, currys, paneer, but the biryanis are always on my order. Really tasty and they can spice it up or hold back on the fire as you ask. I am not Indian so can't comment if its authentic, but I can definitely conclude that it's tasty. Prices are reasonable and for a typical Stone Oak family it's a different cuisine then the Mexican, pizza, BBQ locations that line northside of 1604. read more

Tarka was a pleasant surprise on a business trip to San Antonio. I saw the billboard next to the airport and thought I'd try it for lunch and boy was I happy I did! Not only was the food great but the staff was very friendly and helpful as well! I'll definitely be coming back. I tried the chicken vindaloo spicy on the staffs recommendation and a side of garlic naan. They didn't skimp on the ghee laiden naan which I was happy about because so often you find that's the first thing to cut corners on. Bring on the ghee is what I always say! I even wrapped some to go in foil to munch on in the airport like a true aunty! read more

I'm going to admit one thing first off - this was my first Indian restaurant I've tried, so I'm probably not the best judge on the "authentic" scale, but I can say that I totally enjoyed my meal. I honestly can't remember the last time I sent a text to my husband saying that I'd just found a new amazing restaurant, but that happened while I was at Tarka today. The food was great. I asked for it "mild," since this was my first attempt at Indian cuisine. I think I could have easily moved up to at least "medium" in the heat range, but better to be safe than sorry. When I arrived at 12:40, there was only one table that was both open and clean. (Sadly, this restaurant joins the ever-growing list of restaurants in San Antonio that we've found has a bit of an issue with the whole "clearing up the dirty tables" thing.) If you can overlook the handful of tables that needed to be cleared, though, the restaurant itself seemed to be in good condition. A note to new diners - try the orange stuff that looks like Kool-aide near the drink dispensers. I'd just gotten soda, thinking the orange beverage was orange juice or something, but when I looked around the dining room, I noticed a number of guests all with the orange drink. It's mango lemonade, and it's incredible. Definitely have to have it for a drink. I really enjoyed it. I had more than enough left over for another meal too. Bonus! read more

This place is Northern Indian food meets Panda Express. They've taken a vibrant cuisine and Americanized it to the point that it's barely recognizable. My friends have dubbed me an honorary Desi so I like to think that would include not only my appreciation for the culture but also my pallet for Indian food. While Tarka may not be traditional Indian fare it is still quite good. The flavors, the spice, the price and the ambiance are all spot on. The restaurant itself feels like Pei Wei; however, I feel that Tarka does a much better job at emulating Indian cuisine than Pei Wei does at emulating Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai or Korean cuisine. The menu is structured similarly in that you pick a curry and then pick a protein. The drinks are self serve with and just as Pei Wei has their specialty Mandarin Tea, Tarka has their specialty Mango Lemonade. I ordered vegetable samosas and chicken biryani. The samosas were nice. They look like the samosas you get at India Taj Palace but with a more flavorful filling. The chutney was unique but still tasty. The biryani wasn't exactly what I consider biryani, or at least noting like any biryani I have seen. Regardless it still had good flavor and texture, and a very satisfying aroma. I'll tell you what I told my friends. Go in with an open mind. Understand that you aren't getting traditional, home style Indian food but rather an adequate alternative that is quick, relatively cheap and good. read more

I wanted to update my previous review. It took some time to want to go back after the experience we had, however we did go back for lunch today. The service was prompt and more than courteous. I did ask to see if the offer I received was still available, because it had been so long, and although they could not find my name in the book, they honored a free dish, which I thought was a wonderful gesture.
