Plenty of parking out front. Interesting choices of fun brunch drinks - tried two and they were 'quite tasty'. Folks were seated outside, but we opted for inside due to 'chance of rain..' Not so good ...Menus were dirty, plates had some 'grime' on them, oysters were still attached to the shell (why don't they cut them off the bottom shell), mignionette was bland, crabcake was greasy, losbter tail was overcooked (a little bit), and quiche was 'standard faire'. Our first visit back since shut down. We are regulars and we're happy to return! The menu is more limited now, and prices went up, but our meal was delicious! One thing we missed was the yummy sourdough bread brought out with a meal. We were told we could purchase rolls instead, which, given the cost of our dinner seemed disappointing. Please reconsider this policy and bring back the bread for us carbohydrate lovers. We did feel like the staff was keeping everyone safe with tables outside and spaced apart. read more

Ive seen this restaurant and thought the dining was going to be good because the restaurant has been there for so long. I was wrong. this is a tourist trap. I ordered a steak , after all, This is suppose to be a steak house. The description was not correct. It said I would receive a 16oz rib eye ($59.95). I received no more than an 8 oz. size steak. It was smaller than my moms 12 oz steak. My husband received 4 scallops with some rice. ($40.00). Bread is not included, salad is not included, and the water tasted funny. The parking loft was dark when we left, the lighting was not sufficient. The lot was covered in large cracked up asphalt, uneven pavement, and pot holes. My Mom almost fell because it had no light in parts of it. The ambiance was simple. The service was okay at best. One of our specialty drinks was warm when it came. When we complained she brought a tumbler of ice instead of replacing it. Server Megan did not know the menu very well. Amazing! My husband and I came here for my birthday dinner and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We were traveling with our German Shepard Dog and we were looking for a nice place to have dinner. This was a winner. The outdoor garden is lovely and peaceful (aside from the occasional plane overhead). Don't let the word roadhouse in the name fool you - this is a beautiful restaurant with great ambiance (both inside and out). My steak was cooked perfectly and my husband loved the scalloped potatoes with his chicken. Our server was kind, attentive and made terrific recommendations. They even had a menu for our dog. The mudslide dessert was delicious and the perfect ending to our lovely dinner. This place really surprised me. I was expecting a very low key and casual restaurant. Instead, I got a fancier and nice place for dinner, cocktails, and dessert. The service was good. I ordered two desserts, the heirloom apple crackle with caramel ice cream and blackberry corn cake with sweet corn ice cream. The latter was divine!! It was so different. The corn cake was so fluffy, buttery, and had the right amount of sweetness. The sweet corn ice cream complemented it very well, and was the most interesting part of both dishes. I personally found the apple crackle too be too sweet by the time I got through a couple bites, the first few were delicious though. Overall, it was a good experience. Our experience at Tarpys was pretty mixed. First off, our server, Nick from Nepal, was amazing - super friendly, and he made us feel like we were his family. He even took our leftover bacon and turned it into a sandwich for us to take home. Great service. The food wasn't my favorite. The steak & eggs (deviled eggs, steak, capers, truffle aoili) tasted like it had been sitting in a fridge for hours. The American Kobe burger (brie, bacon, lobster, truffle aioli, fries) was fairly flavorless and the lobster was tough. Overall, the service was truly wonderful, and the food was mediocre. Out of towners just passing through, we tried it based on Yelp reviews and we were all very pleased with our meals. Everyone was searching for something different from salads to fish to comfort food and all were delicious. I had a salad with added salmon, which can be dicey at some places. This salmon was well prepared and made the salad a great meal. Service was great, and being midweek and early evening we didn't need reservations. I've always enjoyed my meals at Tarpy's. Definitely top notch service and now celebrity Chef Todd adding to the package. The steak and lobster is always a winner as well as the cognac selection. I always enjoy a creme brule and double espresso after dinner, sugar and caffeine always help to pep you up for the ride home. I've also enjoyed special events upstairs. That area is fantastic with the patio access. Lobster bites and the cheesy gooey dip are great appetizers. Tarpy's has some cool history for its namesake as well. read more

I wasn't sure what we were going to get for celebrating our 35th Anniversary. We were in for a pleasant surprise! We brought our dog with us and at our request we were seated outside in a beautiful courtyard full of Ivy and stone architecture. Everything from the drinks to the Dougie menu was delightful. My wife's salmon and vegetables was delicious. I'm a vegetarian and had limited options available due to the covid-19 pandemic. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich expecting a very simple fare but was I surprised! Thick slices of soft bread with generous cheddar cheese filled with broccoli and mushrooms, I've never had anything like that. We found this place by accident driving back from Monterey and took HW68 because of traffic. The restaurant is right after Montrey airport and has a beautiful setting outside and nice and cozy and tastefully done inside. As you enter the place, the outside setting looks beautiful on a warm day or evening, it would be a perfect place to have dinner with family. Inside is really nice too; tables are little close to each other by other than that, it a relaxed fine dining atmosphere. We ordered the Dirty Duck and Calamari to start and Dirty Duck Tots was so wonderful (just need a little higher quality cheese)! Bone-in Maple Brined Pork Chop is good. The burger look just ok but kids liked it. The prices are definitely not cheap. You are paying high prices, food quality/taste is good, but way too far away to drive for it everytime. There are so many other places in Carmel and Monterey area with the same price range and Ocean view settings. Not sure if I come back giving the high prices for the setting and environment of the place, but we enjoyed our dinner nevertheless. They seems to have a Dog menu as well so that could be treat for your little companion. Love the fact that they serve Justin Cab by the glass ($16), but pricey since you get the bottle at Costco for $22. PS - The hostess and waitresses are just wonderful, friendly and professional. My friend just had her wedding reception at Tarpys and from the perspective of a guest, it was great! Loved the passed appetizers (chicken and steak skewers). For my meal I ate the meatloaf--which I never do when I'm out, but that was my nut-free option, so I went with it. And it was both HUGE and delicious! People seemed equally happy with the chicken option. As a bonus the wines (at happy hour/dinner and the toast) selected were of a very good quality (unfortunately unusual for wedding receptions). I also appreciated that things happened at a good pace--neither rushed nor overly long. Service was on the whole very nice and attentive. Only down side is that there's only one restroom up in the Library Room, where we were--and if you have guests with mobility issues it may be hard to get them upstairs (maybe there's an elevator?). No books in the Library Room :( Also no Patrick Swayze-like Road House fisticuffs. I'll leave it to you to decide if that's a good or bad thing. ;) read more

Terrible service. When we made a reservation we requested an outdoor table with a heater and we were given a table with a broken heater. The hostess said she would see what she could do and ghosted us. She even forgot who my husband was when he went to check up. I made a reservation at 11:00am thinking that the Opentable times may have been correct for brunch, but the restaurant called me a day in advance to push it back to 11:30 which was fine. Super cute location with a lots of outside seating (both in the front and the back/side). It was still somewhat chilly when we got there, so we sat inside where it was warm, classic, and inviting. The outside filled up pretty quick. Service was very attentive. Our server kept checking in with us, along with the busser and a manager on duty. The food itself was pretty good! We opted for the blue berry buttermilk pancakes, and the pecan waffles. The pancakes were pretty soft and fluffy, but the waffles were very unique, sweet, and yummy with quite the crunch! I would definitely recommend trying that, but perhaps to share because it can be a bit bunch for just one person. One of my favorite restaurants in the Monterey area. When I used to live in Monterey I even had a birthday dinner at Tarpy's one year. It was beautiful. Good wine selection, really fresh food, and attentive service. I love the airiness of the space and the iced tea is delish. I always get a box of it take home. On my last visit, the server recommended the Hawaiian fish special and it delivered. I wish I could recall the fish but all I can remember was that is was Hawaiian.
