We haven't been to Tarpy's in awhile..the kids love it and whenever we drive by they always yell out "There's Tarpy's." They love to color on the table. Today we were a party of 6...it seemed to be a slow day at least slower than usual...service was okay and I had the ceasar salad with chicken which is usually very good...it was just ok today too..the Sport Tea is super and the busboy constantly refilled it! Perfect meal after a day of showing cars at the Legends of the Autobahn. So, when it was time to order I requested the burger. The fine lady asked if I wanted cheese and bacon etc... I was hungry so I said to put everything on it. That burger was huge. Impossible to assemble and eat. But that's what I asked for. Regardless, it was super delicious and worth the moderate price. Atmosphere. Very warm yet open and not claustrophobic. Decently lit for the evening. The service was quick and polite. Even on a busy night. The place was packed with car guys and gear heads and their spouses and partners. Overall, I was more then pleased with this place. Quite frankly, I was not expecting much. We went with a big group and they seated us in our own private room (reserved on a Saturday night). At first our waiter was a bit slow on drinks, and when we mentioned that we need better service from the bar, or another waiter, he turned into Super Waiter. I was priveleged to be invited to this amazing restaurant. What a treat. My girlfriend is a regular here and I see why. She wouldn't come often if it didn't please her because with her money situation, she could go anywhere. Beautiful setting. I will revisit during the day because I want to see it all. Other reviews say "not good"...so just return or exchange the food... this is the type of place that gladly would do this. I am giving it a 4 1/2 because the zip upsweatshirt that was given that I really liked, just didn't hold up at all early on. They sent me another, same issue. It may have been a bad batch. Tarpys Roadhouse, another great Monterey area dinning establishment, and one not to be missed. I have dined here on a number of occasions and loved each one. Earlier this week for lunch we shared Frickles, deep fried pickle spears to start. Perfectly coated and prepared ... we don't remember the uIngredients in the dipping sauce, but it would be great with anything. Try them. We also shared the beet and rhubarb salad, delicious, and the French Onion burger, blended with minced Crimini mushroom, another great sauce and substituted sweet potato fries. Have not been out to enjoy in more than a year due to Civid pandemic. We went for lunch on the patio and experienced the great quality of food, wine and service that we have known Tarpy's to provide. Sunil, our server, was exceptional. The lamb shank was fantastic. Sunil recommended the Sea Bass special and I was also very greatly pleased with it. Had an amazing event at Tarpy's for my son and new daughter-in-law's rehearsal dinner. We had 50 people. Claudia was great to work with and made everything easy. We had a full bar and sit down dinner with choice of 3 entree's. The food was all great with large portions. The appetizers were delicious as everyone was getting drinks at the bar. I've been to Tarpys often because it is our company's "fall back" restaurant to go out to. The restaurant/ wine tasting facility is set in a wonderful location: beautiful gardens of blooming plants, tall shady trees, soothing fountains... and then there's the food. With such a gorgeous setting (and corresponding prices) you would expect the food to utilize fresh ingredients and perhaps create an interesting fusions of taste to enjoy. In reality, it is little more than a steak house with a singular talent at deep frying various things. If you order beyond that (I always make this mistake) you will get questionable ahi tuna, wilted lettuce, old chicken from yesterday (with a second life in today's sandwich). Stick with the standards (fish & chips, burgers) and you should be OK but I would recommend you go elsewhere (Grill at Ryan Ranch) if you're looking for cuisine over garden ambiance. read more

As I photographer I shot a wedding who had their reception at Tarpy's. For a wedding I was thrown off by the roadhouse idea but the outdoor seating area is BEAUTIFUL. It does not fit with the 'roadhouse' theme at all. There was an abundance of vines and greenery and a lake in parking lot. The waiters were very attentive to the wedding party and the place seemed packed. We watched 4 different prom parties come in limos that night. I cannot vouch for the food (I heard it was good) or the inside (hence 4 stars), but I can vouch for the scenery and service. Next time I find myself in the area I know I will be stopping there to eat. read more

We had our wedding reception there in February and it was absolutely wonderful. There was a dessert bar, but we never would have known because by the time we got over there it was ALL GONE! Everything turned out pretty good..I wanted to give 5 stars but we were supposed to have a different side come with our fish entree and we had some final bill issues that I had to deal with during the reception. Came here on a semi busy Saturday night and got excellent service. Bruchetta was delicious with the roasted cherry tomatoes on top, and if you are reading this GET THE RIBS! Holy shxt, very juicy and are actually smoked which Is very evident. I got the full rack, and was caught off guard with how big the portions were. 2 people could share a full rack. Subbed out the French fries and watermelon for a side salad n asparagus, and it was a perfect meal. I took one star off of this review because my wife ordered the rib eye steak cooked medium and for the price of it, the steak was not as good as expected. Cooked to more like medium well and not very thick cut. The desserts were very good, creme brulé had a different thicker viscosity to the custard that what we r accustomed too, and it was the best we have tried. I'll be returning in the future. read more

When you hear 'Roadhouse' you would usually think ribs, wings and beer, right? Not here! Tarpy's Roadhouse is very upscale and serves an eclectic mix of tasty food. Anything from Calamari appetizers to Cobb salad that is dressed in a delicious Gorgonzola vinaigrette. Even a hearty meatloaf that mom would be jealous of. Throw in a full bar with delicious drinks like Morning Martini and Bourbon with a pickle juice back (house specialty!) and you have a winning combo. I recommend Tarpy's to locals and visitors alike. I have been driving by this restaurant for years when visiting the Monterey area, and now that I am moving to the area, we decided to finally check out the restaurant. First and foremost, great atmosphere. You could dress up or down and you would be comfortable. Love the art by Joanna Zjawinska, gorgeous wine "cellar". Food is good, not great. Simple preparations that are well prepared, just not exceptional or imaginative preparations...except loved the Frickles! Wait staff that we encountered seemed a little light on professional food service experience, but were certainly nice and attentive. A great feel good restaurant is the best way to describe Tarpy's. My wife and I had been waiting to check this place out for a long time, and we're glad that we finally did. The hosts were prompt and friendly-we arrived early and expected to sit at the bar to wait for our table, but we were shown to two tables and given our pick between the two. We were given a digital drink menu which was really neat and allowed us to select aperitifs. We chose the Hunter's Cocktail and the All Saints. Our drinks were delivered promptly, and were well-poured, well-mixed, and delicious. For an appetizer, we had two different small bites-the bacon Brussels and the frickles. The Brussels came with an amazing, delicious tomato jam, and the frickles were perfect-lightly breaded and barely fried, with a tasty herb-based aioli. The main courses were also impressive, although a couple of small points made me give the review four instead of five stars. I had the maple-brined pork chop, which came with cheese pimento grits, blistered broccolini, and pickled pears. The side dishes were amazing, and the pork chop was decent, although there was almost no flavor signature regarding the maple brine. My wife had the Kobe burger, which came with fries and a tasty but predictable chipotle-esque dipping sauce. The problem with the Kobe burger is that it has too many amazing ingredients. Kobe beef, bacon, truffle aioli, and Brie all seem to duke it out in the mouth for flavor champion of the world. Personally, i would recommend ditching the smoky dipping sauce, replacing it with the truffle aioli, and keeping the burger as is otherwise. Our server was awesome, too. We will definitely come back, and I recommend Tarpy's to anyone in the area looking for a place with decent prices for quality cuisine. read more

I'll keep it concise. :) 1. Good food - I honestly did not expect the food at Tarpy's to be as good as it was. The frickles were great, my Kobe burger was interesting, and the desert was on point. 2. Good service - We had a great server (can't remember his name, but tall man with salt+pepper colored hair) who was being helped (maybe she was training) by a nice young woman. They were very nice to our two small toddlers, and checked in on use in a timely way. The young woman even brought my kids two big red balloons at the end of dinner. That was so nice of her and my kids went apesh*t over them! :p 3. Good environment We sat on the patio, which was very nice. Great weather, and a gorgeous sort of garden-feel made it a great environment to eat in. It is close to an airport, we had one plane fly overhead, but me and the kids loved it (since it was so low), just added to the experience and wasn't a bother. After so many bad dining experiences in Monterey (admittedly many in more touristy areas...) Tarpy's really brought hope back to us while visiting Monterey. They're a little off the beaten path, but definitely worth a try. read more

Today was my first time eating at Tarpy's - it was AMAZING!!! Happy Hour appetizers - Spicy Ahi Tuna Tacos are to die for - I could have eaten 14 they were out of this world. Sriracha Glazed Ribs were sooooo delicious and tender they fell off the bones. I love the sweet and spicy glaze. And last the Crispy Calamari was yummy - I loved the lime-Thai dipping sauce. Tommy was our waiter and he was fabulous - sharing stories and favorite foods and was so attentive. I will be going back and I highly recommend Tarpy's - you won't be disappointed. My cousin took me to Tarpy's recently and I loved it! The place is beautiful, tucked into the hills. The interior was cozy, with lots of different spaces with fireplaces for small parties or large ones. I had the scalloped potatoes (something you don't usually see on menus) with the ribs. The potatoes were out of this world. Ribs, not quite as tender as I like and was not fond of sauce. That being said, I would certainly return to Tarpy's to try other items on the menu. From the looks of this place and the chain-like sign out front I was pretty nervous about what this meal was going to be like. I was in town visiting family for an 80th bday party. We sat in a private room and had a blast coloring on the table and enjoying appetizers, mains and the wine! Our waitress did a great job handling the 10+ people in our party. The food was so good!
