Some great egg dishes for the 3 of us and a double espresso, americano, and cappuccino got all of our days started. The space is very Upper West Side - that is a mix of brick and wood in an aged building. Very well decorated and the service was top notch and very attentive, and very friendly. But the food.... - Branzino: 10/10 (the only dish I actually really enjoyed. Portion size was big and the fish was flavorful.) - Gnocchi: 4/10 (the texture of the gnocchi was off! It was wayyyy too soft and the noodles were flavorless. Sauce was ok.) - Lingua di Passaro: 3/10 (noodles were very stiff. The whole dish wasn't flavorful at all.) My friend and I enjoyed our lunches at this small place kitty-corner from the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. My eggplant parmigiana had a dark plum tomato sauce and just the right amount of cheese on top (not too much). My friends and I just went to Tartina for dessert and it was very close to closing time but they were still very accommodating and managed to seat us. We had the pistachio cheesecake and tiramisu. Both items were delicious but I would definitely say that the tiramisu stood out- I mean, it is a classic. The ambience of this place is really nice as well, love the fresh flowers. Every neighborhood in NY has their go to Italian restaurant. If you are lucky to live or work on 111 St and Amsterdam Ave. you already know TARTINA a little gem of true Italian cooking. Through friends we dined there on Friday evening and to our delight had a what seemed like a home cooked meal in a warm and welcoming setting. My wife started with the classic Sicilian Eggplant Parmesan, light and fresh, and I the clams and mussels cooked perfectly. By the way the focaccia bread was melt in your mouth delicious. For a main I had the homemade Lasagna, very good and Thayer had Spaghetti Alla Nerano, a dish made with butter, sautéed zucchini and cheese. A real treat was a dessert call Fragola, a pastry horn fill with mascarpone, yogurt and fruit. YUM! read more

We ended up splitting the dishes to cheat our way in getting our fix of Eggs Benedict and pasta (Carbonara). The Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon was delicious and the english muffin stayed crispy. The hollandaise was a bit liberal and didn't give a lasting impression. The potatoes with peppers and salad were lovely sides to the eggs. Carbonara was recommended by the server for pasta, get it with cream! It was pretty good -- creamy, tasty, and a good amount of pancetta throughout. Overall, it was good food. There was one peculiar part of our lunch. A woman appeared to be in a domestic abusive relationship with the man accompanying her, and he raised his voice multiple times within 30-45 minutes. There were instances where he was borderline yelling at her and everybody else got silent. It was uncomfortable and clearly the man was trying to control the woman saying "if you don't stop this behavior, I'm going to slap you." I was a bit shocked that the manager of the restaurant didn't ask them to leave or act civil. It definitely interrupted everyone's dining experiences, and I hope the woman is okay. read more

I came here for dinner with my family before heading downtown to see Billy Joel play at Madison Square Garden. We thought dining at an Italian restaurant before the show was playfully appropriate. It was also the right decision. The staff is friendly, the ambience is warm and inviting, and the food is tasty. I had the pappardelle bolognese -- flavorful and filling. You should instead (as my sister did) opt for the cacio e pepe. They prepare it tableside, swirling the pasta in a cheese bowl of pecorino romano. It is creamy, it is delectable, and it is almost too rich to eat. Almost. Pairing our dinner with a bottle of white and a bottle of red, Tartina set the scene for a great night out and lots of fond memories made. I would certainly dine here again. read more

Had dinner here last night and left quite disappointed. My 2 friends had never been here, and I had only been once a few years back, dining in the outside Covid shack, which was a pleasant experience at the time. The atmosphere of the room is very nice, and all the staff were very pleasant, but the food was very disappointing. One of us had the arancini to start, which was quite cheesy and delicious, but entrees were mediocre: 2 of us had Cacio e Pepe, served from the plastic Parma bowl, which is ridiculous -- it was lukewarm at best and a really scrawny portion. The other had the roast 1/2 chicken, which is really a paillard, sadly it was dry and overly salty. We really wanted to like this place, but there are better alternatives in the neighborhood. read more

Don't let the off-color brunch menu with Caesar salad and lasagna fool you -- a great spot for brunch! I split the prosciutto asparagus overeasy eggs and the pancakes with a friend. Those are the fluffiest pancakes I've had in a while. The asparagus wrapped in bacon with prosciutto and eggs was delicious. Savory dish was $14 and pancakes were $15. The pancakes are a stack of 2 and quite hefty, so I recommend splitting with a savory dish and a friend. I will be returning for brunch! read more

Tartina a nice little Italian restaurant located across the street from St. John's the divine. In contrast to an old school place like V&T a few doors down, Tartina looks 'antique' but is more of a modern Italian restaurant. Service is a happy medium between quick and European-style, with no one hovering over you. The inside is very nice with 2 tiers of seating, however since the pandemic they built one of the nicer outdoor seating areas I've seen. It's huge holding at least 10 tables, in addition to more on the side, and their kitchen lets out right towards this area to keep things efficient. W111th street is beautiful as is, however being across from a garden and also the church make this a gorgeous setting. The reason I didn't go to Tartina much pre-pandemic was the menu. It's a mix of more unusual Italian dishes made with very familiar items. Sometimes a guy just wants pasta bolognese instead of slogging through a menu, know what I mean? Over the pandemic they introduced a takeout menu just like this (including some great pasta bolognese), and they've retained this menu. They look at you a little sideways if you order off it, but I could care less. As mentioned pasta bolognese is my go to, as it's the best version in the neighborhood. They also make authentic pasta carbonara; this fish is usually screwed up (including nearby) by just throwing on top eggs instead of properly stirring in the egg yolk/cheese while the noodles are still hot. Tartina does things right, and the results are tremendous. Other items like burrata and eggplant parm are also great. Drinks are pretty damned good too. Competition between Tartina, Fumo and V&T in the neighborhood is very tight, with each having their strong points. What Tartina gets right it gets VERY right food-wise, the service is probably the best if the bunch, and the atmosphere blows the others away. If they could just update their menu to be a mix of what they currently have, we'd be golden. read more

I did outdoor dining for brunch few weeks ago, and revisited during the weekday for dinner. This time, dining inside. As always, their service was excellent. And the ambience inside was great! I am just a little bit disappointed by the quality of a few of the dishes, although some were very nice. The good ones were: 1. Garganelli - I am not a big seafood person but this one deserves 4-5 stars! 2. Contadina salad - pretty basic ingredients, but I loved the white balsamic vinegar taste! Quite nice before the meal. 3. Tiramisu was fantastic as other reviews attest! I would even wanna go back just to have a dessert. It's also pretty big! Some of the disappointing ones were: 4. Arancini - came with only two pieces, and tasted meh... not worth $14 5. Lasagna - this is partly my fault for ordering something off the dine-in menu. This dish was on the delivery/take out menu. I was craving lasagna so much that day and ended up ordering this one from the takeout menu. It literally tasted like a frozen lasagna... topped with fresh basil. Super disappointed. The garganelli pasta with sauteed shrimp, mussles, and asparagus was incredible - pasta was just the right chewiness, sauce had just the right combination of acidic tomato and deep asparagus flavor. Giving 4 stars instead of 5 because the shrimp was slightly overcooked, and the waiter wasn't good at giving recommendations.
