We did have to wait 15 minutes to be seated but were greeted with very sweet workers who were all volunteers. The energy in there is amazing. We ordered the grilled chicken sandwich and the Chinese salad with lemonade. The food was exceptional and the waiters went above and beyond. They do have restriction on how much you can order as they do not want food to go to waste. A small plate and larger plate was definitely enough food for both of us. I walk in and it smelled delicious, they asked if I had a reservation and I said no. I looked around and I seen many open tables. She then grabs a menu and silverware and saids she will set my table up then half way to the table she comes back to talk to the two guests behind me then sets them down at the table I was gong go sit at. Came here based on their popularity on Yelp, menu, and of course the premise of their restaurant...the community! A very modern looking brunch like interior, service was quick and friendly. I ordered the burger, medium. It was delicious. They clearly use quality ingredients. Brioche Bun was toasted well, aioli was flavorful. The crispy potatoes were perfection! I saw this place on TikTok and thought it was such a nice and unique concept - pay what you can all in a mission to allow people from all walks of life to taste quality, nutritional meals. It's also serviced by a majority of dedicated volunteers and caring staff. My parents were in town. We decided to try it, especially since it's within walking distance for us. There was a bit of a wait but it wasn't too bad.. We got seated and were served by one of the volunteers and a trainee. Across the table, we ordered the mushroom frittata, barbacoa eggs benedict, and shrimp and grits. For whatever reason, I did not take a picture of the food. Though please believe me in that the plating of the dishes is great - it's what you'd expect from an upscale casual dining establishment. For the barbacoa eggs benedit, what stood out was really the cheesy gordita base. A great substitute versus a traditional english muffin that offered a substantial base for all the rich flavors on top. My dad got the shrimp and grits. I tried a bit of it and it was tasty. Generous with the portion of shrimp. Lastly, my mom got the mushroom frittata. That was pretty good as well when paired with the goat cheese spread on top. It is one of the smaller plates though so if you're not too hungry then this is the perfect portion. Overall, this is a great place doing great things for the DFW community. Parking is available on the street and location is pretty close to several businesses and hospitals. The space is nice and clean with a small garden in the back. The majority of the staff are volunteers with exception of the manager and chef. The concept is pretty interesting where it is pay what you can or want which limits you to trying only one dish (and one side). With the menu changing often, my friends and I wanted to try multiple dishes so we ended up splitting it family style. The portions are decent sizes which allowed us to split the dishes and still feel satiated. All of the dishes we had were light and filling with the right amount of flavor. I CANNOT say enough good things about Taste! My bestie and I dropped in for breakfast last week and were treated to one of the most singularly AMAZING dining experiences I have ever had. I do want to begin by offering a few notes of caution to those "typical Dallasites" who want the best dining experiences life has to offer: while this is one, be prepared, if you prefer wealth to your humanity, look to dine elsewhere. Taste is a Democratic Socialist take on fine dining. Everyone is welcome and pay what they can. You will dine with folks of every color and from every walk of life, and everyone has the same rotating 4-7 item menu, and will be assisted in the dining experience by the same volunteer staff. No food is permitted to leave the restaurant, so come hungry, many do. Reservations require a minimal fee. The food is fresh and made to order, and even the entrees that might make you hesitate, yet designed to and will absolutely delight the tongue. Once done, they ask you to donate to their "feed one, feed all" dining experience to their best of your ability. If you can, I recommend purchasing your meal and the meal for six others as well. I ordered the steak which was cooked only 1 way but it was too bloody for my taste. Then they allowed me to try the fish. The outside of the fish was cooked but it was frozen in the inside after that it was my time to leave. Si Manila is a real thing if I continúes to eat that fish. As I got tell the manager she offered to re-cook the fish and it was just best for me to leave. I even donated and bought one of their cups. As I am walking out the manager was behind and I spit the frozen fish out my mouth outside and because I did that outside the Taste restaurant she told me that I was not allowed back. I brought my mom here for her Birthday lunch and to support the restaurant. It was out second visit but it's been over a year. I definitely recommend making a reservation for this popular "volunteer " restaurant! We had friendly service and the food was good but not great. It did take about 15 minutes for me to get my hot tea, guess the station was backed up. I didn't mind since I was with my mom and no in a big rush. I like the simple menu with fewer options that we can decide quickly and get the order in. Came here a few months ago with a friend - I ordered the Lamb Kofta Kabob and they got the Seafood Fideo. Absolutely loved the dish I ordered - it comes with ground lamb and beef seasoned with middle eastern spices and pickled spring vegetables. It's served with white bean hummus and toasted pita. Everything tasted so fresh! My friend really enjoyed their meal too. The Seafood Fideo has shrimp and mussels simmered with Spanish spices, fresh peas, and vermicelli noodles topped with garlic aioli and garden herbs. It's served with lemon. They said the pasta was light, flavorful, and that the shrimp and mussels paired real well with the pasta. Taste is a nonprofit restaurant with a pay-what-you-can concept. We have always been greeted and treated so kindly. There are always folks training but they do such a great job. For this stop we had the breakfast sandy. The potatoes were amazing! So crunchy and the sandwich was delicious I would eat every day if I could. They always have a diverse menu with very interesting things to select prepared to perfection. As Christmas approaches this year, I've found myself meditating on what I am grateful for.   A few years ago, I was diagnosed with an illness affecting the nervous system and was terrified as my functions were intermittently glitching and, at times, nearly shutting down. I found myself both listless and confused, and routine tasks became overwhelming. I realized that it had been weeks since I'd had a proper meal; I had fallen into a habit of having a bowl of cereal or something equally mindless every time I got hungry. Lethargic grazing. I worried about what inadequate nutrition was doing to my already sick body.   The financial implications of my illness were not clear yet, as I did not know how long it would take to stabilize and what my medical needs would be going forward. As a result, I was concerned about money and did not feel safe spending on quality restaurant meals several times a week, but had to figure something out, as I was beginning to feel even worse with my recently devolved eating habits. I discovered Taste Community Restaurant and went there regularly for a few months to build myself back up with real food again. The restaurant was beautiful, the menu was amazing, and the owners were very nice. I think they could tell that I was traumatized and demoralized and that my case went a bit beyond simply being broke. (I didn't talk to anyone there about what I was going through, but was clearly crushed.) I appreciated that they held a space for me and that they created such a warm place for people in need to come for sustenance. Most of the volunteers were very nice. On one visit, I recognized a former classmate from middle school named Elizabeth Forney McCarthy (although I remembered her as Liz), who volunteers at Taste restaurant. She looked uncomfortable and resentful as she brought drinks to my table and shot me disgusted looks from across the room. (Could I not have tried harder in life so she wouldn't be put in this position? How thoughtless of me.) I think the cognitive dissonance of someone she knew turning out to be one of "those people" made her reflexively antagonistic; I had inadvertently made it harder for her to virtue-signal in peace, as her real feelings about "losers" surfaced abruptly by my presence there. Having said that, I am quite sure she was friendly to everyone else. My health has improved since those visits to this restaurant, and I am glad that the disorienting and scary period of time right after my diagnosis is safely in the rearview mirror. I'm happy to have memories of being supported during that difficult time. Life can be even more beautiful than before once the worst storms pass. Taste Community Restaurant is a wonderful lighthouse. read more
