Let's be real, this place isn't healthy, not even close, by a long shot. What it is, is darn good sandwiches, with meat, cheese, and bread, and seriously yummy flavors, it's bready/juicy goodness that will keep you coming over and over and over again, assuming you go to the gym shortly afterward, because you will likely want to eat everything on the menu, and who would blame. The meat is delicious, it's good right, seasoned right. Their claim to fame, is their bread is from Philly, which seems legit. During lunchtime, it seems like one's goal is to stand in line, smell the food, salivate, read the menu, then realistically order everything. This is a short review, because it's dangerous. OH EM EFF GEE! This easily falls into my top 3 best sandwiches I've ever had and depending on my mood and time of day, I'm sure I would say it IS the best sandwhich I've ever had. The only one that comes close for me is Little Lucca's in Daly City which I still drool over almost daily. Mark H and I were strolling around the neighborhoods on a Seattle Saturday and happened into the Pioneer Square area. An interesting mix of old architecture/shops with interestingly "seasoned" people sitting around in the parks and on the street. I'll admit, there were a few times I tucked my big DSLR underneath my hoodie. ;) At one of parks, we watched some people playing "Big" Chess which was interesting, the park even had a couple of fooseball tables which really brought back memories of being a teen and hanging out at Campus Cue and Gameworld. The tables in the park were free to play and I actually stood there for about 15 mintues, trying to blast a shot in. Not playing for 30 years really takes its toll...LOL. Being a Saturday, many of the businesses were closed (I guess most of their traffic comes from the lunch crowd during the work week) so we sorta stumbled upon Tat's Deli, it was packed which was a great sign. I ordered the 8" Philly cheesesteak (there's a larger 12" if you're hungry, or maybe splitting it between 2 or 3 people) and ordered it with everything on it, sweet and hot peppers, grilled onions, and cheese. The friendly counter girl asked what type of cheese I wanted and I said with a grin, "WHIZ of course!" :) There's a sign explaining to you how to order and what things mean but I couldn't read it in time so had to ask a bunch of questions anyway. The girl was very cool about it, though. First bite...Holy Stromboli! this thing was over the top delicious. Hot, tender steak, smothered in all kinds of goodness. Each bite had that super well balanced taste with all the ingredients mixing together. The hoagie bun was soft but firm enough to stand up to the huge amount of juicy steak and everything else in there. I had philly juice running down my chin with every bite! It was so damn good. Mark H ordered a basket of Buffalo chicken strips that he said were better than the average strips....he's definitely an afficionado when it comes to chicken strips. It's no joke when Tat's makes note that they have the "best cheesesteaks..." because they certainly have an amazing one! MY ORDER 8" steak with American, wit (grilled onions), mushrooms, sweet & hot peppers, lettuce, tomato. And DO NOT call it a sandwich! They will correct you. It's a hoagie. For $9 it's a damn good one too. And trust me 8" is plenty big for one. (That's what she said). My steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Perfectly juicy. Perfectly melty cheese. I will comment however that my steak seemed to be lacking in amount of peppers. Oh well. Fries - $2 for small side. Minus one star for these. I'd pass. Hey YO, for all you knuckle heads that think Philly is the epicenter for all things cheesesteak, well think again! I've been to Geno's , Pat's & Tony Luke's in Philly so Frank knows his cheesesteaks. Now I decided to give these guys a chance so I strolled in for a taste today. At lunch time you can stand 30 people deep in line but it goes fast and most of those folks are taking to go so you can sit inside and enjoy. Same rules apply here like in Philly and that's know what you want prior or face the wrath.... Let's face it you have time to review the menu while standing in line. Avoiding the stupid questions helps the order taking and a person like Me who wants to brain you for being dumb. My usual standard order is the Philly Steak with provolone cheese & sautéed onions ( if you screw this up you should close your shop ) Now I have very high expectations and TAT's didn't fail me. My cheese steak was superb. Moist & bursting with flavor and steaming hot so make sure you let it cool down before the roof of your mouth becomes part of your meal. Why haven't I reviewed this place yet? I have been here at least 5 times. Tatstrami is what I come here for but I also tried a few others as well. Their sandwiches are filling and messy but full of flavors and textures. The meat itself is salty but they balance it out well with a bit of sweet creamy a tad bit sour russian dressing sauce. They're also known for their cheesesteaks, but I am personally not a huge fan of cheesesteaks in general. There always seems to be a line out the door everytime I come here but it moves fairly quickly and I never had problems finding a seat to eat. I believe only Visa is accepted. I'm jaded when it comes to sandwiches. So many places get it so wrong on so many levels, that I've really given up on getting a good deli sandwich on the west coast. Today, that all changed. Tat's Deli from now on will always have a special place in my foodie heart. Went there for the first time today. Got there early, no line. Within 15 mins, the line was out the door. Ordered the Tat'strami and a bowl of Jambalaya to go. Smelled the awesomeness oozing out of the bag the whole way back to the office. Once settled, I carefully unwrapped my sandwich and mixed up my jambalaya. A bit of meat hanging off the side? Don't mind if I do. Bam. Smoked, juicy, tender and bursting with flavor. Then, I took a bite....All the flavors danced in my mouth, in perfect harmony: the fresh crusty bread, the flavor of the meat combined with the cole slaw, the melted swiss and russian dressing. After my first bite, all I could think to myself was OMG. Someone on the West Coast finally got it right. The Jambalaya was also mind blowing, by far the best i've ever had. Meaty, smoky and has that "homemade" flavor that is very hard to fake. Even as I sit here having just finished eating my sandwich, the smokiness of the meat, and all the flavors of the sandwich linger in my mouth in the best way possible... and I wish I had more. May need to try again I was not overly impressed with the chicken Parm it had too much breading and barely any red sauce. But my husband did very much enjoy the Reuben with coleslaw which is not very typical but what he used to have as a kid. Was in downtown for lunch lately and decided to give Tat's a try. There are a few sandwich spots in the area but Tat's had a ton more hot sandwich options which is what I was looking for. They had a line outside to place your order at the window and if you ordered online or through a third-party, you could pick-up your order in the alley. I ordered the Rueben and my husband got the pastrami sandwich with slaw on the side. My Reuben was great. There was a ton of flavor, not overly salty (just the right amount) and a good ratio of sandwich to sauce. The sandwich itself was also a ton of food so I wasn't able to finish the whole thing. My husband liked his pastrami sandwich as well. It was definitely more salty, as pastrami is, but was also a really solid sandwich. Heard a great deal of positive things about Tat's and I was very eager to try this place out for myself. Upon ordering I decided to try the cheesesteak. I would like to add that the cashier was very friendly. After trying my selection, however, I wish I would have tried something else. (and it pains me to say that) Maybe I was expecting too much based off of the other reviews, or maybe it was an off day for cheesesteaks? Ill never know. Let's start with portions- they were definitely generous. The 8 inch was more than enough for me, in fact I only ate half at a time. The steak wasn't chopped nearly as much as I am personally used to in a cheesesteak and the meat itself didn't have a lot of flavor to it. There was however plenty of cheese and all of the fixings inside. (I got onions, sweet peppers and hot peppers) In fact, when I was eating my sandwich things were falling everywhere. Nothing to complain about there! I would like to mention, I'm not totally voting this place off- and neither should you! I personally just wasn't crazy about my selection. PHILLY CHEESESTEAK!!! My boyfriend and I ordered an 8inch Philly Cheesesteak with grilled onions and hot peppers, 8inch Meatball Marinara, and a side of French fries. I'm sure you can already tell but my heart was won by the Philly Cheesesteak. The bread had a crispy exterior while maintaining that warm slightly softer interior we all know and love, the steak was tender and beautifully seasoned, and the provolone cheese was melted perfection all over it. Yesss. The fries were also really good too! My favorite kind of fries where you can taste the soft potato on the inside, while maintaining a crisp outer coat. Do you see a pattern to my texture palate? Haha! The meatball marinara was OK. And I think that the reason is because of one simple gripe I have about this place. Basically, I love my hot sandwiches like PIPING hot. Like 10/10 hot so that even if the sandwich cools down, I can still eat it at an 8 warmth level. Unfortunately, the sandwiches are served at an 8 and dropped to a 5 or 6 throughout the meal. That being said-- it's been unreasonably cold in Seattle, so don't worry Tat's!!! I totally understand!!! My husband and I decided to share one and even though we didn't ask them to cut it in half, they did it in their own and wrapped it individually and gave us two containers of the hot peppers. The bread is nice and soft, lots of pastrami and plenty of flavor and sauce in their slaw. The cashier was very friendly and nice and service was pretty quick. Since the tat'strami is grilled, it took a little longer than their hoagies, but I think we waited about 5-7mins for our sub. I'll definitely go back to try their turkey tat'strami!
