We finally made it down here and it was well worth the drive. We started with a bruschetta appetizer and a sangria. The sangria was tasty and the appetizer was great. The chili honey was an interesting twist and really added a lot of flavor to the dish. We both had pizza cravings so my wife had the pear and Brie pizza and I had the 3 carne pizza. She absolutely loved hers. I was just so so with it but I'm not a huge Brie fan so it's on me. The 3 carbs was very good too. The sausage is excellent and with some red pepper flakes it was super good. I had tres Leche cake and she had churros for dessert. Both were excellent. Food came out fast and piping hot and the service was excellent. We're coming back soon for parts and main dishes. Oh and the online reservations were super easy. Tauro Cocina is my favorite new restaurant of 2022. From the atmosphere to the food (and the drinks in-between), this restaurant is a sure-pleaser for fans of Italian-Mexican fusion. You could imagine my delight when I received in the mail a notice from the city of a pending application for another liquor license in my area. Being somewhat on top of the building vacancies in the area, I was pleased to see that a restaurant was moving into the former DiModa Pizza (forgive me if I misspelled that). I did not anticipate the rebirth of this cute building to be such a culinary experience! Upon entering we were welcomed and promptly seated by the close-knit workers (I'm thinking that a family mostly runs this restaurant) who explained the menu and went over the drink list. There is a lot to look at from both a drink and food perspective, and it is nay impossible to make a bad choice. My favorite drinks have been El Anticuado and a limited time Blueberry Martini. El Anticuado is a fresh spin on an old-fashioned with a great smoke finish, and I wish that the martini was available all of the time but for my health and productivity it may be good that it isn't. My favorite dish is, by far, the Spicy Tomato Basil. It consists of homemade pasta and grilled chicken in a delicious red sauce. True to the name all the way around, there is a hint of spice that is not overpowering but rather delicate and pleasing. It is tastefully plated and for once I was given a portion of pasta that is just enough, unlike other restaurants where you are either loaded to the brim or underserved. The whole works is topped with a whole chicken breast of reasonable size. I have otherwise gotten the cilantro risotto which is perfectly cooked, served with shrimp, and is flavorful every time. I am more than happy to pay someone else to cook this dish knowing what a fuss it is to make a good risotto. If I could give one word of advice: If you order the Pan de Casa (house bread), I would suggest to avoid getting the pizza. While both are good on their own, they do share the same foundation (as is the pizza will be made with the house bread as a crust). It is a lot of bread and you will better enjoy your meal by adding variety. I did have the Margherita pizza, and I would have preferred a different take on such a classic. Its hard not to love this restaurant when its two of my favorite cuisines Mexican and Italian. Stopped in on a Sunday evening for date night wasn't busy at all. The setting is nice and intimate, with some nice flowers as your centerpiece in each table. Our server was nice and helpful! For drinks I tried the Paloma italiana and my husband ordered el anticuado. I loved the variety of Paloma options and my husband's drink was whiskey on ice with bitters and it had a nice smokiness to it. For food we ordered Chile encuerado which was a stuffed Chile poblano pepper and salad on the side and it was delicious! The entrees we ordered were the spicy tomato basil pasta which I really enjoyed it was nice and flavorful and my husband ordered the asada pizza, I had a slice to try and we both loved it so much who would've thought tomatillo salsa and Oaxaca cheese go perfect on a pizza! Visited Tauro on a busy Friday night (making a reservation through their booking system was easy) and we were seated shortly before our reservation, which was great! Our server was friendly and did a great job explaining the menu, including popular choices for food and drinks. I had the Salmon, that came with cilantro risotto (AMAZING) and seasonal veggies. I also added shrimp. A friend had the Linguine Al Poblano and had no complaints. We also ordered two flatbreads (Higos and Clásica), to be eaten as appetizers, but they ended up coming out after our meals - but plenty left to go and both were delicious. Leo Lounge: We noticed several servers telling their tables about the upstairs speakeasy (which we wouldn't have known about otherwise - no signage). It was the perfect 'after dinner' spot - the bartenders were engaged with everyone that stopped up, the drinks were decent (a bit juice forward for those that prefer stronger cocktails) and the playlist was perfect! I went to Tauro Cocina on a Saturday evening with a group of friends. We had a reservation and they sat us right away even though some of our party was late arriving. The service was good throughout the experience. I got the Paloma Italiana for my drink and I really enjoyed it. Everyone in the group got a different drink and everyone had good things to say. We tried the spinach dip for appetizer and it was pretty good but you don't get a lot of bread to eat with it. (The picture I added did have two slices missing because we had already started eating. Things took a disappointing turn when we got our entrees. Unfortunately everyone but one person decided to get the fettuccini Al mezcal dish and we all thought it was spicy but otherwise very much lacking flavor. I was grateful I got breaded chicken added which was tasty but the pasta was very bland. I would try this place again, it might've been an off night for the kitchen, or other dishes may be better. After lots of rotations from Trocadero to DiModa, I've always loved this spot on the Eastside, and now there's even more to love! The interior and patio vibe doesn't seem much different from it's predecessors, but don't be fooled- the menu is an entirely different and {amazing} concept of Italian and Mexican cuisine seamlessly combined in ways you never thought of! We made reservations and glad we did, it was packed on a Tuesday night for a party of 3 for the patio! Cocktail menu is amazing. Went for classic Sangria as it's always my go to, and wasn't too sweet, and the glass was oh la la!! Others in the group did the classic margarita (which was spot on), and the Italian Paloma which was a fun mix of traditional drinks that my husband LOVED! They take food orders directly on ipads at the table, which ensures it hits the kitchen ASAP which was cool, and seems easier for waitstaff. We did the charcuterie/cheese board, and it was good, but I've had better if I'm being honest. Mussels were amazing, could've used a whole loaf of bread to soak up that sauce! The smashed potatoes had the best char and seasoning on them, definitely get those. Mains were hard to decide on! Two others in the group got pasta and loved it. Looks like the same noodles for pasta dishes, wasn't sure if it was homemade or sourced local? The salmon and risotto dish was super good, and the chili oil/pepita sauce really brought it all together. Only note would be the salmon was very unevenly cooked-middle was completely raw, barely warm and outside was charred. Didn't ruin anything for me since I eat raw fish in sushi, but could for someone else. Overall, will definitely be back to try more of the cocktails and more of the small plates and salads that looked amazing as well! So glad this iconic East Side location is back up and running. The former Trocadero and DiModa is now Tauro Cocina, a family run concept which combines traditional Italian dishes - including pastas, pizzas and entrees - with Mexican-inspired ingredients. Let me tell you, the concept works! The menu is chock full amazing dishes and cocktails that you can enjoy on one of Milwaukee's best patios! First off, the cocktail menu is amazing. I decided on the classic Sangria -it wasn't too sweet and it came in a glass with the longest stem I've ever seen (bonus points for that unique glass). The Italian Paloma was also a hit! On to the food: We started out with the classic bruschetta which was very tasty with the goat cheese and prosciutto thinly sliced on top. The highlight were the mussels, which are bathed in a chipotle butter and had a great kick. They were so good we ordered more bread to soak up that amazing sauce! We also ordered a wood oven pizza: Oaxaca cheese, poblano peppers, red onions and cilantro. It was bursting with flavor and the crust was just right, not too thin and flimsy or too hard and crunchy. We couldn't resist trying out the pasta, and we decided on the fettuccine with a chipotle mezcal cream sauce and grilled chicken and oh my that was increible! Amazing taste with a nice kick from the chipotle sauce. Definitely a hit! All in all, this is a welcome new addition to an iconic building on the East Side. Tauro Cocina is just what a restaurant should be. The best vibes! An incredible patio. Raggaeton and bachata softly - not overwhelmingly - playing in the background; just enough to get your foot tapping, but not so much that you can't engage in conversation. Relaxed environment-but not slow service-so you feel you can take your time and enjoy a gorgeous day on the patio without being rushed. One of the owners makes the rounds and GREETS PATRONS AT THE TABLE. I have not seen this level of service since visiting Branko at Three Brothers (this is pretty much the highest level of compliment I could give) THE FOOD: I was so excited for a restaurant creating a combo of my two favorite cuisines- Mexican and Italian (probably in that order), and wow wow wow they did not disappoint!! I was hesitant since they are so new and most restaurants don't hit their stride for a few months, but they are already pros! Everything was absolutely delicious, mouth-watering, wonderful We had: Red Sangria- a huge glass and not only delicious but so pretty! Rosamiel Margarita- the perfect balance of light and fruity without being weak Mejillones- amazing chipotle based sauce!! We loved it so much we had to order extra bread and literally licked the plate clean! Bruschetta- light spread of goat cheese with a drizzle of pesto and perfectly sliced prosciutto draped on top Poblana Pizza- we loved the crust- not too thick, but not so thin that it's like a crispy cracker, and the cheese and sauce. We wish we had asked for some sausage or a little chorizo on it, which I think would round it out perfectly Fettuccini al mezcal with chicken- super yummy pasta. I went to Tauro Cocina tonight with my family and loved it! This is replacing the old Di Moda and Trocodero. We all really enjoyed our drinks and loved every meal we got. I particularly enjoyed the Burrata Pizza with Grilled Peaches - top notch. Others at my table enjoyed pizzas and pastas. Great integration of spice without being too much on the pastas, too. Our server Asia was very sweet and attentive. We were grateful for the accommodations the staff made to make it easier for my grandpa to get around as well. We had made a reservation but it definitely wasn't necessary as there was abundant seating on the patio and inside. I did get the vibe that Tauro had sort of rushed to open as the old Di Moda sign was still on the door. I don't know exactly how to explain it but the inside smelled a little musty, not the restaurants fault because I definitely noticed this with Di Moda as well. We sat outside in the patio which was super nice! It has a nice fountain and bunch of different types of seating. Our server was friendly and got our drinks started right away. Tauro is Mexican/Italian fusion so there was a nice cocktail list as well as about 10 wine options. There wasn't a Sauvignon Blanc on the menu (my go to) but the server was nice enough to ask around for the best option that was close. The menu has a variety of small plates and some very delicious pizzas. Note - pizzas cannot be modified to be gluten-free and gluten-free options in general are a little limited (think cheese board, salad, select small plates). We had a delicious potato appetizer that was similar to potatas bravas, a burrata appetizer and then a pizza with burrata and peaches. Food definitely does not disappoint! We had such an incredible time at Tauro Cocina! We were immediately greeted by multiple friendly employees before being seated for our reservation. We sat inside because of the heat, but I think I would opt for outside in the future just to try it out. We started out with bruschetta which had honey goat cheese and prosciutto and it was so tasty! I had the sangria and we also got another tequila drink which was a little strong, but still good! We both had pasta dishes which were delicious and great if you like something with a little bit of a kick! The building consists of a bar area, and then a seating area, and then an extra space, and then the courtyard. I went on a Wednesday and there was only 3 tables full in the whole area. With all of the apartments nearby it seemed oddly desolate. Although it was clean and decorated tastefully. The courtyard with a fountain was semi private from the street with walled areas. The server was personable and had recommendations. None of the food options were great. The house bread was basically a plain pizza, the higos pizza didn't have enough sauce or sauce. We started with drinks, both were very good, but light. You can never go wrong with anything that has tajín and tequila imo. The food was great and memorable. The food took a little longer to come out. We got the mussels for our appetizer which was cooked well and had a delicious spicy chipotle sauce. My friend and I both got the linguine pasta with the poblano pesto sauce. The sauce was delicious, creamy and peppery. I really wanted to love this place. Latin fusion pasta and pizza--what a novel concept. Sadly, our experience here was very average. We got two dishes: the risotto and the linguine al poblano. It seems the kitchen got kinda lazy and used the same sauce for both dishes, because the sauce tasted pretty much identical -- just that one was a pasta dish and the other was served as a risotto. The sauce was justifiably good though. I liked the bit of spice that the poblano peppers lent to the sauce. The linguine was not al dente at all and fell apart easily when I tried to scoop it up with my fork because it was so overcooked. The chicken that was served with it was on the dry side. The risotto was much better! I think I wouldn't have been so disappointed if the sauce base wasn't the same exact one used in the linguine dish. For a Latin-Italian fusion restaurant, I think they could have afforded to be more adventurous with their menu. More intense Latin flavors could have been used - it was as if the chef was too afraid to fully dip his toes in the spiciness and robustness of the flavors of Latin cuisine. In contrast to the food, our drinks were delicious. The cocktails were yummy, and heavily Hispanic inspired; I think this is why I enjoyed them so much. The non-alcoholic mango chamoy tajin drink tasted very similar to a mangonada, and I loved. The patio area was nice and intimate, with string lights strewn across the ceiling. The patio was closed off by a garage door, but I'd imagine it'd be open and gorgeous in nicer weather. Atmosphere-wise, Tauro Cocina does not disappoint. I have been here twice now and both time I have had great service and delicious food! The first time was for my birthday! For an appetizer, we had bruschetta (so yummy). For my entrée, I ended up getting the spicy tomato basil pasta which was fantastic. The pasta was spicy but had great flavor. Because it was my birthday I got a free shot of tequila and the lemon lavender flan. The second time I went I ordered the bruschetta again and had the Linguine Al Poblano.
