Okay seriously maybe my visit was a one off, friendly staff,super busy...went for just the Ahi Tuna wonton appetizer and a beer...very disappointed! The pictures are far from accurate! Ahi tuna was cold to room temp, thin and did not taste seared at all. A drop of wasabi/sour cream must mean a dollop at Tavern on the Hill! The wonton was so over fried that one fell apart and a piece of tuna fell onto the ground as I tried to eat it. When I was asked how I liked it, I said I was not too impressed and the waitress said that they weren't a sushi place...I protested that they do have sushi on their menu and she said that they weren't known for their sushi...just a side note here, I get that they may not have a Sushi Chef on staff in Duluth...but if you put something on your menu, please know how to prepare it! There is a great recipe on www.simplyrecipes.com for seared ahi tuna...might be worth a look! Oh and I guess no one listened to Kristine P's review 28 days ago...should have checked Yelp first! From others I have talked to the draw of the place is it's varied menu, burgers, closeness to UMD and it's trendiness. Came here for lunch on their opening day. The place is absolutely huge! Sat in a 4 season porch area during a beautiful Duluth day. Our server Abbie was awesome and the food was great! Only bad part of it was having to wait about 30 minutes to get our checks. This was due to the computer system crashing, opening day problem I can deal with. Love the many different types of dishes offered, but almost too much variety. Knowing it's a new restaraunt, a 30 minute wait isn't bad. We were able to find a couple bar stools at the bar (where they also offer full menu) and enjoyed some delicious beers. I was happily surprised to see local beers and Hamm's on the draught list. We has the nachos and kale dip - both tasty! Then we had the avocado tacos and the BLTE. Will definitely order them again. Our waitress, Delaney, was helpful with our indecisiveness over the menu and she took great care of us. The atmosphere was upbeat, but still able to hold a conversation with your neighbor. Prices are reasonable on food, a little spendy for the drinks. Overall, I would recommend trying at least once. We plan to go again, but for happy hour. read more

I was in town visiting family so we visited for lunch. Even during lunch on a weekday the place was very busy but it's big so it wasn't a problem to get a table. I got the kale salad, my mom got the burrito bowl and my boyfriend got the mac and cheese so that tells you the variety on the menu - which to me is a good thing! I liked my kale salad well enough but I did feel like something was missing. It had chicken, wild rice and cranberries but it needed something else. Croutons or something. Maybe because the wild rice didn't really add much in the way of flavor. It was good but not amazing. My mom really liked her burrito bowl. It's similar to Chipotle in concept but the rice was more seasoned - like what you'd get at most Mexican restaurants. But she loved it and it was big enough she even brought home leftovers. The service was nice and attentive and overall there was a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. This is a great addition to Duluth, and especially to this neighborhood. read more

I have been here a few times. I don't recommend it unless you want to pay a pretty penny for some decent cuisine. DON'T use their curbside service. They don't deliver. Late night specials are the only thing that will keep me coming back here. Otherwise, it's too overpriced for the location. It's next to a college, what do you expect? I prefer Blackwoods and Blackwater for this chain of restaurants. A server named Payton(sp?) at Blackwater ALWAYS treats me well. This place is great to eat at for appetizers, me and my family used to go here every friday and get the deals on beer, pub pretzels, and chicken wings. The price is pretty high but Food is great and the service is nice. Personally for me outside seating was too noisy there is traffic going by and it's hard to enjoy a meal and talk when you can't hear. read more

Ok, this place has been open for about a month or so. The restuarant was busy and when I first got here, I had to wait for a seat. I went to the restroom (it was clean) and when I came out, I found a seat at the bar. I was greeted by Justin Lyons. We was awesome and I had a great experience here. He has tried many of the dishes on the menu and he is honest about it. He is very helpful on recommendations. I had the Bison Pot Pie and it was excellent. It could use a little more veggies and about 1/4 less salt and it would be a top seller. I have been in Duluth for 2 weeks and I wish I would have come here sooner during my stay. I would defiantly come back when I return to town. I will recommend the Tavern to the people I work with here in Duluth. Awesome job Justin!!! read more

Drink selection was great! We ordered the bluestone burger and the house smoked salmon sandwich. The smoked fish sandwich was lacking flavor, the cream cheese was lumped in the middle of the sandwich, the lettuce was completely wilted and brown. And personally the smoked fish tasted as good as canned salmon.The burger was also lacking flavor it was supposed to have some tasty blue cheese flavors that did not exist. Our server never told us of happy hour specials or any food specials that they had. He never came to ask how our food was nor did he ask when he gave us our tab. I could understand if it was busy and the service was poor but the place was dead. No reason to not come back to a table. read more

Great place for lunch. Today was my first time ar the Tavern on the Hill.Good drinks and Pricing was OK also. I really was impressed by the wall paintings, depicting Duluth and Surrounding area. The artist is very good. Waite staff very good, making you feel right at home and that you mattered. I glad they kept the TV sound down and only in the bare area where it should be. We visited for lunch on a rainy Friday afternoon when the patio wasn't open so we had to sit inside. We had a member in our party who is immunocompromised, so we were a bit concerned, given COVID-19. The young man at the host stand was very kind and went way out of his way to try find a table in a location that would be safest for us, with the best air flow and distance from other diners. I have never had anyone at a restaurant work so hard to accommodate this, and it was so greatly appreciated! We don't live in Duluth, but we will return and definitely go back to this restaurant! The server was very friendly. The menus were a bit confusing as the prices had no dollar signs beside them so I wasn't sure what it meant at first. I'm a basic hamburger and French fries type, I don't like extra spices or anything. The French fries were not good but the hamburger wasn't bad. I didn't really mind the loud music but others clearly did. We didn't notice a long wait for drinks or food. From the moment our party of 8 walked in, the experience was 5 star. Our server Paige made great recommendations. We started with the fried crispy creamy avocado appetizer as well as the pub pretzels and ahi tuna crisps. They were all excellent. For dinner I had the Lake Superior whitefish with the smashed cauliflower. The fish was light and flaky and cooked perfectly. The piccata sauce was as good as I've ever had and the smashed cauliflower was so good I wanted a second helping!! Our table also raved about the Tavern Cioppino, Grecian tacos, midnight Cubano sandwich and the Cheesehead pizza (for our vegetarian) hit the spot just right! We also had a five year old who is gluten sensitive but it wasn't a problem finding a delicious meal for her ~ she loved (devoured!) Shea's Mac n' Cheese with the gluten free noodles! I took my team to Tavern on the Hill for lunch last week after receiving a gift card from the manager. I had been here previously and the wait for lunch was quite long. I am very happy to say that this experience was much better! We had four people in our party and were seated right away and our drinks were brought quickly. We ordered an appetizer, which was also brought promptly, and our meals followed the appetizers as soon as we were done eating the appetizer. We did not have to wait for anything, which is just the way lunch service should be. All of us had some form of lemonade or NA drink and they were all tasty and refreshing. I really like the selection of NA drinks here for the times you don't want a boring old Diet Coke or a cocktail. The appetizer we ordered was the steak tips and they were very good. It comes with fried onions and a horseradish sauce that all go together well. My meal was the shrimp and avocado salad and it was delicious. I typically get the fish or shrimp tacos here, which are always good. The shrimp salad had similar flavors (shrimp is cooked the same way) but was lighter and great for lunch. I'm really happy to have given this place another chance and to see the improvements that have been made in their lunch service because they do a really good job at offering a wide variety of food and drinks that please most everyone. read more

We frequent the "Tav" every weekend we are in town to watch hockey. We seem to visit during the late night happy hour following the game. The service is always great, friendly and attentive. I love their chicken wings; they and hot in temperature, with a wide variety of flavors and plentiful when it comes to meat on the bone. The mini pizzas are perfect for a late night snack add your topping to your liking and you can't beat $3 bucks. Portions are great, lots of variety, give it a try. read more

Over rated. Had to wait over an hour for a table. First impression upon walking in was impressive but that was the highlight unfortunately. We were sat in a large room with horrible ambience. My friend ordered the macaroni & cheese which was fairly decent. I ordered the chicken and waffles. I had to send my meal back (which I never do) because my chicken was so over cooked & completely dried out. When I received my dish for the second time my waffles were soggy, chicken slightly less over cooked but the Panko crust had little to no flavor, not even of chicken. The server was kind and the manager did apologize and offered a free dessert which was tasty (chocolate torte) but overall I would not recommend the food nor the ambience, at least not for dinner. Hopefully the grab & go market is more promising. Very disappointing. read more

This is a tough one. In Duluth this is a 4 star place. Lots of different styles of food on the menu. Tacos, pot pies, sandwiches, burgers, bowls, salads and more. Tavern on the Hill is trying to be a lot of things and usually I feel that doesn't go well. But for the most part they do a decent job. There is nothing on the menu that I have had that is fantastic but a lot of good choices. I had the pulled pork sandwich last night. I also had the smoked salmon appetizer. The sandwich was pretty good. The appetizer was good, but I had to get over the fact that I was paying 12 bucks for smoked salmon, a dollop of cheese and Town House brand crackers. I am just not used to getting a spread of Town House or Ritz on a plate when I go out to eat. But you know what? It worked. It was a good cracker choice with that salmon and that cheese. When I have been here before the waits have been fairly long. Not last night. Quick service and much appreciated. Good beer selection. I had the Day Tripper. Excellent. read more

Absolutely amazing all around. Me and my hubby dined in at the bar about 930 pm and I could tell they were still super busy! Our server Hallie greeted up promptly and got our orders as soon as we were ready. She was super friendly and catered to us even after we paid out. Service is definitely five stars all around the restaurant. It only took about 15 minutes for us to get our food!!! I would recommend to everyone that you visit the restaurant after the dinner rush to get the best experience. If you've ever worked in the restaurant business you should know better than to go to dinner at 6 o'clock at a brand new restaurant and get top notch service. Over all the food was great I got a quinoa bowl full of flavor!!! And my hubby got the tavern burger and he said it's the best burger he's ever had and he's definitely had his share of burgers! Went here for Valentine's with my boyfriend because it was close to campus. Like a 5 minute walk from campus close. We were seated immediately(but we did go around 3, right after our last class). Waitresses were super friendly and attentive. My boyfriend ordered the Bison Burger which was HUGE and very juicy. Was perfectly seasoned and topped with grilled onions which made it 10x better. I ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger which my boyfriend and I both feel in love with. It came with a generous amount of meat and two thick slices of bacon. It was not those thin flimsy bacon slices you eat for breakfast which pleasantly surprised me. It made the texture so much better. Like the Bison burger it was perfectly season. Also, both our burgers came out pink, like how we asked them too. Waitresses should ask you when ordering. Both burgers also come with a generous amount of thick cut fries. The Tavern is one of our favorite places to go on Tuesday date nights (there are even candles on the tables for mood lighting). I love the atmosphere if the restaurant - all of the little details like their fixtures and artwork really come together. The menu is well rounded with a variety of food ranging from pasta, burgers, wood fired pizza, sushi, to fruit and protein shakes. If you don't like to wait for a table the bar has open seating including booths. My favorites are: stuffed mushrooms, sweet potato burger, wild rice burger, margarita pizza, California rolls, the club, and flourless chocolate cake. This place was far better than I was expecting! The ambience in here is so chill , very low lighting which was hard to adjust to at first. They have a lot of seating, great artwork and comfortable booths. All staff was very friendly. My sister got the burrito bowl and said it was delicious, my friend got a spicy shrimp salad. She said the shrimp was more spicy than she expected but still very delicious. I had the California club, it was one of the best Turkey sandwhiches I've ever had. When they first opened, I would have given Tavern on the Hill five stars. The food, service, and ambiance were all stellar. On my most recent visits, though, the service was slow (wait 20 minutes for a glass of water and hello slow) and food was mediocre. The ambiance is still pretty awesome. If you like outdoor dining and don't want to deal with the tourist frenzy in Canal Park, this is the place for you. Came in on a busy Friday night at about 7:30 dinner rush. Was promptly seated at a booth which we asked for. Waitress was very friendly and professional. She was very busy but still made sure all of her tables were happy and taken care of. We ordered the Steak Tips as an appetizer. The Steak Tips were cooked to perfection and also came on top of fried onions and various peppers. The sauce was bland and tasteless but all and all I would highly recommend them it was a great starter meal. For my main course I ordered the Tavern Burger (no bun) with a side of sweet potato fries. My burger was amazing and the sauce it came with was fantastic much better than the Steak Tips sauce. Burger was cooked to perfection as well. My girlfriend ordered the Spicy Shrimp Tacos. She enjoyed her meal as well said it was good the shrimp could have had a little more taste to it. (She did finish her plate) it was a great date, great atmosphere and the food was fantastic. Tavern is OK. The thing they do best is drinks and snacks, but I have never had a spectacular meal here. It can be overpriced for the quality you receive. I haven't had amazing service here, but I also haven't had any rude waiters. This restaurant is always busy because it's so close to campus, but I can't see this place being popular if it was located anywhere else in town. It's not particularly good, and you should ONLY stop here because it's convenient, not because you expect the food and service to be amazing. Great meal at the bar. Had a real interesting squash dish featuring butternut noodles (just squash carved out) with lettuce, peas, and peanut sauce. Nice atmosphere, real knowledgeable bar tender (came up with a great grapefruit vodka drink based of interests!). Overall, solid dinner. read more
