One of my favorite matcha spots on Seattle! I've been stopping by here and there for a drink before I head to work. You order through a kiosk (it's probably cashless) and can easily customize your drink. They only have 2 kiosks so if it gets busy, the shop can get a little crowded since it's not very big. There's only a couple seats at the counter and two tables on the tatami mats. And a public(?) restroom (no code or key required). But the employees are efficient and make the drinks pretty quick so I never have to wait long. I've visited right when they opened and also during the day, and they always seem to have customers so it definitely seems like the spot to go to if you're craving matcha! I've tried at least 3 of their drinks with different customizations and they have all been delicious! I highly recommend ordering your drink with oat milk for some extra flavor. I prefer my drinks on the sweeter side and they always make it just right with the matcha thoroughly whisked so no large clumps at the bottom of my cup. If you're dissatisfied with how they make your drink, just let them know (i think they're willing to fix it for you, based on a sign i read at the shop). I typically spend an average of $10 for a drink here due to my customizations but I think it's worth it for the quality. Taz was my first stop when I arrived in Seattle, and I was excited to see how it compared to the matcha drinks I've tried in LA. I ordered their Earl Gray Matcha with their chashi blend and oat milk, and my partner got their regular iced Matcha Latte with an added salted vanilla cream top. The earl gray flavor paired nicely with the matcha latte, which was earthy and subtly sweet. It was very comparable to the matcha sold in K-Town in LA. The space can feel a bit crowded when traffic is higher, as there is limited seating, people lining up to order on the kiosks, and people standing waiting to receive their orders. It was quite packed with a line on the weekend and you sdo see them weighing and whisking the matcha for consistency. Price is up there, but only $0.60 for milk substitutes. I enjoyed my recent trip to Taz Matcha. I tried their Earl Gray Matcha Latte with oat milk. I chose the Chiran Harvest matcha, which had a more earthy and robust flavor that stood out in a good way, and it paired well with the early grey. This was a unique and well-balanced latte, and my friends enjoyed it in their seating area where you take off your shoes and kneel and/or sit down, more similar to some restaurants and cafes in Japan. I stopped around 11am on a weekday and I was the only one in there. Once I left more people started stopping by. I ordered an iced Strawberry Matcha with no added sweetness for my man and I chose the iced Earl Grey Matcha for myself. The matcha was high quality and soooo delicious! I tried the Strawberry Matcha and stirred it a bit more thoroughly for my boyfriend and it was super yummy! He was very pleased and agreed it was probably the best Strawberry Matcha he has had. My Earl Grey Matcha was definitely the best Earl grey Matcha I've tried compared to other cafes. The Earl Grey flavor was sweet but not too sweet and amazing flavor that paired perfectly with the smooth high quality matcha. I drank my beverage fast because it was so good but tried to be slow so I could really savor the flavor it was so dang delicious!!! The interior had dim, romantic, and calming lighting. TAZ is hands down one of my favorite matcha spots in Seattle. As someone coming from the bay/tried uji matcha in japan , TAZ offers some solid ceremonial grade matcha. Both the strawberry and earl grey matcha with oat milk we ordered were perfectly creamy and rich in matcha flavor. You can tell they use high quality matcha since they hand whisk each drink and there are many flavor options you can customize for your drink. Very traditional Japanese ambiance but seating and parking is limited as it is in downtown Seattle. I do have to say price is a bit expensive at around $9-10/cup but very well worth it given rising costs+ comparable to other cafe drinks in the area. I get this as a treat every so often. Servers are very friendly and great at explaining menu items and you can purchase matcha bowls, whisks and matcha powders in store as well. I believe the interior is japandi style, creating a minimalist and warm environment. Given that we went on a weekend, it was a bit overwhelming inside since it was crowded and small. Despite that, service was relatively quick. There are also two bathrooms, no code or key needed. Strawberry Matcha w/extra matcha and less sweet (~$10) - 4/5 I got the Chiran matcha which was earthy and creamy. The strawberry puree was slightly sweet and could have been tarter. I wish I got extra strawberry puree because before I knew it, only the matcha was left. Earl Grey Matcha - 5/5 Great balance and ratio of earl grey-matcha-and milk! The earl grey was subtle, not overpowering the matcha. If I had to choose between the earl grey and strawberry I would get the earl grey! To know me is to know I love matcha, so I always make it a point to make a matcha stop when visiting a new city. This cafe specializes in ceremonial-grade matcha & kept popping up when I searched for the best matcha in Seattle, so naturally I had to find out why. I visited on a Sunday morning. They open at 10 a.m. on Sundays & by the time I arrived around 10:40 a.m. there was already a short line out the door. Thankfully, it moved pretty quickly. I'm truly not used to chilly weather anymore (desert-living), so I was grateful not to have to wait out in the cold for too long. Ordering is done through 2 tablets, and the staff were clearly busy, so I didn't get to ask any questions. I had my heart set on the banana oat matcha, but it was sold out. A tragedy. So I opted for the earl grey matcha with almond milk instead. I like that the drinks are so customizable. You can choose your matcha profile (such as earthy or floral), adjust the sweetness level & caffeine strength, swap out flavors, etc. I kept mine mostly as-is, just subbed almond milk. The drink was SO good. I love earl grey tea, but never had it in a matcha latte before. My first sip caught off guard because it was bitter, but it was delicious once I mixed it a bit. The cloud top added creaminess & overall, the matcha was a balanced blend of the 2 teas. The place is very quaint & since it was so busy, it felt crowded. Most people seem to get their drinks to go, and I just felt bunched up as I waited for the drink. There wasn't much room to stand & everyone was getting in each other's way, lol. There's seating at the bar, where you can watch the baristas prepare the matcha, and a couple tables with traditional Japanese-style seating. There are also a few cute trinkets on sale, and I imagine it can be a very calming environment when it's less crowded. This might be my favorite matcha cafe in Seattle. I got the hojicha latte with a matcha cream top and the matcha strawberry latte. Both were incredible but the hojicha was my favorite by far. I will definitely be getting that one again. We also got super lucky because Kinokos House was doing a pop up there that day. I really love that this cafe supports local bakers by hosting events like this. We grabbed a slice of the black sesame basque cheesecake and I am not exaggerating when I say it was the best cheesecake I have ever had. The crust was perfect and the inside was so creamy and soft. Been hearing that Taz has the best matcha in Seattle, and although I'm not sure I agree just yet, I can confidently say that it's definitely a strong contender. I am SO glad to have finally tried it. Drinks: (5/5) They had a special blueberry foam/cream so I got that on top of a regular matcha latte with oat milk. To be honest, I was really nervous about this drink because blueberry flavors don't usually translate well outside of baked goods in my opinion. I was proven COMPLETELY wrong. My matcha had an extremely accurate blueberry flavor that paired perfectly with the earthiness of the latte itself. I assume the flavor comes from dried and processed blueberries because it looked like powder that was dusted on top of my drink. 100% recommend. My partner got the earl grey matcha, which was also good but just ok when put side-by-side to the blueberry one. We honestly wished the earl grey came through a little stronger. I ordered an iced strawberry matcha latte and it was very good - it did get watery so I recommend drinking it as quickly as possible. if you can afford to, definitely add 2g matcha to your drink if you like your matcha to shine through! also be careful when grabbing your drink at the bar table, I nearly dropped mine because I was unaware of its slanted edges. did not get any interaction from the workers but I also ordered from the kiosk and left right away due to limited seating so there's that. read more

I've been on a mission to try all the Matcha places in Seattle and this one was next on my list. The decor is simple, zen and very Japanese. The seating area on the left requires you to take off your shoes and sit comfortably on the low tables. The bar is a relaxing setup to sip your matcha and take it all in while you can watch the barista whisk away at the matcha powder and prepare your tea. The only part that's a bit off to me is that they were playing pop music which doesn't quite fit the theme. The drink tasted amazing especially with the black sesame flavor but unfortunately it didn't taste floral at all. The matcha to me wasn't very strong as I didn't feel any extra alertness or extra energy kick like other ones I've tried in the city. I was extremely impressed by the quality of the matcha. I got the earl grey with oat milk, hot. It was perfect for a cold day - warm and comforting. I loved that the flavors came through, but subtle. The sweetness was perfect - very light. I made hojicha at home today with powder I bought in Japan, but definitely the drink I got at Taz was much nicer. Maybe I'll have to buy their matcha equipment next? I came on a Thursday around 10:30am, and it was empty at that time. The staff was very professional, quick, and thoughtful. The lady let me film her whisk, and got some water in a cup with straw for my son. I really appreciate their thoughtfulness! The interior is very tasteful and calm. I came here for the Superbowl weekend and they made their vanilla creme blue for the Seahawks which I thought was really cute! There was a line when we went but it went by super fast. The interior was so nicely decorated. There were people hanging out and people studying, but overall it was such a modern feel. My friend and I sat at the bar where they literally whisked our drinks in front of us. Service was great and the girlies were all friendly! The matcha itself was high quality. The color and taste was great and wasn't completely masked by the flavored creme tops. The vanilla creme top was classic and good, and their blueberry creme top was their weekly special. They have little seating so most seem to get it for to go. Hojicha Latte 4/5: The roasted flavor is prominent as it should be with Hojicha, regular sweet is not too sweet so you can fully enjoy the other flavors in the tea. It felt a lil light and I would prefer a richer mouthfeel but still very good. Earl Grey Matcha Latte 5/5: This was so good. Good balance of earl gray and matcha, friend tried it without the cream top and requested a bit more earl grey flavor so it wasn't as creamy but it still had a very bold and thick mouthfeel. Not sure if they saw the additional note but I would get this again and again. I'm conflicted about whether to try the original cream or get it as she did. They often collaborate with pop-ups. There was a panna cotta pop up and a Takoyaki pop up next door when we went on the weekend. Worth the hype if you're itching for a matcha but the cost can be high for a fun drink but isn't that the case everywhere in Seattle these days. read more

Food - Matcha was really high quality during their soft launch. The quality has gone down since opening. Matcha is no longer creamy nor fluffy. Service - Originally had an employee explaining the differences in matcha and it felt like a more curated experience. Now has moved to self order kiosk, moving away from the intentionality and respect for the matcha. Generally faster service now than it was in the beginning which is a good thing. Ambiance - Japanese style tatami mats with a drink bar. As it gets warmer in the spring and summer, it looks like the shop has no AC or way of ventilating, it gets toasty in there. Editor's note: Personally not a fan of rating small businesses lower because I understand how difficult it is to run a business. That being said I think there are some critical items that make the review the way it is. For me when I first was met with this shop, it felt like they wanted to do something different; the japanese decor, the attention to different qualities of matcha, the specialty drinks, the variety in cream tops, the explanation of types of matcha. It felt like the intention was to create an upscale version of matcha shops, a place you could go to soak in a quiet pocket of japan. Of course the owners' intentions may have been different, and these were simply my first impressions. Over time however, possibly due to trends, virality, popularity, the shop shifted away from having this "corner of japan" vibe to more of a grab and go matcha place, just like all the other shops. No longer special, no longer trying to be different but instead just following the crowd and trend. Part of this may have been to supply chain shortages, profitability, and other reasons, but it is a shame, because I saw a different vision but was served something short of that. In short, I still think the current shop layout doesn't match their current philosophy. It feels like Taz is stuck in a transition phase; one foot is in upscale matcha and one foot is in fast food matcha. The dissonance of philosophy and shop design feels odd. First off, I'm not a matcha fanatic. However, this is my favorite place for matcha. My go-to drink has been the Red Bean Matcha with Black Sesame Cream, which I usually get with oat milk and jasmine syrup as a sweetener. I love red bean and black sesame, so this pairing is the holy grail. This drink has changed my life. Recently, I discovered the Brown Sugar Hōjicha which isn't on the paper menu, but is available when you order using the tablet. It is equally amazing and has become my new favorite after the Red Bean Matcha. The Brown Sugar Hōjicha tastes more like coffee and has a nutty flavor. This place is seemingly busy all the time, which makes sense because the drinks and atmosphere are great. There's tatami style seating and a bar area. You can also purchase ceramics like a matcha bowl made by local artists along with matcha itself and utensils. Taz Matcha is located a block away from Westlake Plaza. There is available street parking, but public transportation and walking would be your best bet. read more

Visited Seattle this week and my friends recommended this spot! Definitely did not disappoint! I got the Matcha Latte with a Vanilla Cream Top! The matcha had floral notes and was creamy and sweet! It tastes so much like the good matcha I get in LA and definitely lives up to the hype! Even though I like my matcha sweet, I do have to admit the matcha here is VERY sweet. I would definitely order less sweet next time, especially since the cream top adds sweetness to it. Drinks are on the pricier side ($10+), but I think it's cool that you can choose to adjust the drinks based on your preference of type of matcha powder, type of cream top, and type of sweetener. Street parking can be hard to find; there's a parking lot nearby, but it costs a lot to park there. Would highly recommend being dropped off and have someone wait in the car! As a self-proclaimed strawberry matcha fan, I've been to Taz Matcha a couple of times now, and my experience has definitely evolved. The biggest win here is the matcha itself. It's smooth, clean, and well whisked. No bitterness, no chalky aftertaste. You can tell they're using quality matcha and actually know how to prepare it. That said, consistency has been a little hit or miss. My first strawberry matcha was honestly pretty bland, especially for the price. I expected more depth and strawberry flavor and left a bit underwhelmed. On my second visit, though, it was much better. Creamier, more balanced, and finally hit that strawberry matcha sweet spot I was hoping for. The drinks are definitely on the expensive side, so I think expectations naturally run high. When it's done right, it feels worth it. When it's not, you notice. Overall, I'd still come back, especially for the quality of the matcha base alone.
