BEST CHICKEN SHAWARMA SANDWICH! Guys it's been 24 hours since I ate here and my mouth is still watering every time my mind thinks about this place. The lot of this place is small and getting in and out of it can be a pain but totally worth the hassle. The food is made to order, amazingly fresh and finger licking good. I came here with my partner and we couldn't decide on just one thing so we decided to share some stuff together. (Side note- don't share your chicken shawarma it's not worth giving up!) The main sandwich the chicken shawarma was AMAZING. Burrito size wrap with perfectly marinated sliced chicken is wrapped to perfection in a toasted flat bread. The portion was enormous and it was hard to believe it only cost $5.99. If you love chicken shawarma this wrap is a must at this location. Second amazing this out of this place is a wide variety of Lahembajin pizzia. There flat doughy pizza like crust combination that are usually spread with ground beef, although we had a simple cheese one. It was an amazing appetizer side that was made to order in their brick oven. The pizza crust was toasted perfectly and the cheese tasted divine. Perfect size for an individual and many different varieties that you can chose from. Thirdly, I highly recommend their spinach pies. It's like the middle eastern version of empanadas but this one tasted so fresh. The spinach stuffing was nicely cooked and the crusted outer shell was just the perfect amount of crunchy and doughy. Prices on their menu is insanely affordable , food quality is amazing, and their customer service is genuine. I will definitely come back for some more tasty food and I am dying to try other stuff on their menu. Inside eating area is clean and organized. A few tables allow you to sit down and enjoy your meal although most customers carry out. If you love middle eastern food this place is a gem and it has now become one of my favorite spots. read more

My fellow yelpers I will attempt to do two seemingly impossible things. First trying to peak your interests in Levantine food or Middle Eastern Food that I have only minimal experience with. The other convincing you to come this far north to try this tiny bakery in a rather unassuming strip mall. Yikes! Vocabulary simplified: Levantine Cuisine: Cuisine from many of the Middle Eastern Countries ( Iraq, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, etc) Manakeesh: Middle Eastern Style pizza. Lahembajin: Doughy pizza like crust with a ground beef spread topped with an egg and baked a gas fired oven. Usually eaten for breakfast. Kanafe: A sweet cheese Pastry I grace this spot multiple times a week to indulge my taste buds in the delightful tastes of Levantine Cuisine. We typically get 3-4 items. Often for breakfast, which for us is actually early afternoon, is Lahembajin ($4.50). This is a thin dough with a ground beef spread that also includes a tomato sauce and/or garlic. Crack an egg on it and bake it a couple minutes in a gas-fired oven. When it comes time to eat fold it up almost like a burrito and chomp like a champ. That egg is so insane on top of it. One of those has you full till dinnertime. We often get a Beef Shawarma's ($4.99) as well. No need to explain this you know what it is. It's well seasoned and explodes with flavor. Quite filling as well. Don't call it a beef sandwich though, that is reserved for Italian Beefs. Call it a Shwarma But my favorite item of all is the Kanafe. Oh wow! That is a special treat. It's a hard roll with sesame seeds that contains a sweet cheese that is dipped in a mixture of sugar, water, and rose water/orange Blossom water. Served warm. It looks like a pancake stuffed in a hard roll but its made of a sweet cheese. An absolutely tantalizing sweet treat that I could not get enough of. It is not too sweet either. Super yummy. You must try this. This is an extremely well run bakery, that keeps prices very affordable with some of the best Levantine food around. Although they seem to specialize in these pizzas. Trust me get a Lahembajin with a Kanafe. Spend $10 and you will be full enough for three people. Great place, great value, great food. read more

MARHABA! OMG. I just paid my 100something visit to this place. And went around 6pm. A massive beef shawarma sandwich was only 3.99 and the beef was seasoned and cooked to perfection. This gave me an idea: I ordered a cheese pie with beef shawarma on it. BLEW MY MIND!!! I also love the Zaatar here but always ask and pay for extra zaatar on my pie. The lahembajin (arabic) or lahemajun (turkish) means meat on dough pie is also very good. I would however recommend not to order the beef shawarma and lahembajin for the same order if you are eating them at the same time. The beef shawarma is so tasty it dulls the experience of the lahembajin. Chicken shawarma leaves something to be desired but they do have 'garlic sauce' available on request sometimes for the chicken shawarma and that makes it a little better. They make 'naan' too and better than most pakistani and indian restaurants. Fresh OJ is good and the bottled mint yogurt drink is amazing with the lahembajin. Bon appetit. read more

Loved it! Taza was at the end of my bakery streak in Devon Ave and I'm so happy we ended here! After nibbling on sweets through the day, it was nice to have something hearty. My friend and I ordered two pizzas to go - I believe it was the Lahembajin w/egg & cheese (spiced meat) and a Mouemara (vegetarian, with pistachios and things). They came out pretty quick (~7 minutes) and they asked if we wanted it folded in half so we could walk out with it (yes). By the time we sat down to eat an hour later (at the zoo!) it was still warm and no worse for getting carried out. The bread was soft and sitting with the toppings really let the flavors sink in. The Lahembajin with the cheese was a little rich for me because I'd been eating hachipuri earlier, but the spicy mouemara was excellent. The pistachios were crunchy and the blend of spices really packed a punch. I wish I could come back to eat the rest of the menu! read more

They have pretty Good manakeesh here, customer service is usually a hit or miss. Last time I went in to order the gave me the opposite of what I wanted. One of the best kept secret restaurants on the North Side. If you are looking for Middle Eastern food/cuisine, this is definitely thr place to go. The pita bread is fresh and made daily. Let me begin by saying that I'm from Iraq. Food snobbery runs in our blood. The zaatar and cheese manakish (Levantine pizzas) here are to die for in the morning along with Turkish coffee and Fairuz playing in the background. I also had the foul mdammes, fava beans cooked in garlic-lemon broth and served with freshly baked naan, 10/10! The falafel is served in beautifully made Iraqi samoun. I attest that this Lebanese bakery makes samoun better than 90% of all Iraqi bakeries that I've tried. The shawarma is 11/10. The bread is arguably the most important aspect of the sandwich, and they have it nailed; freshly baked and firm, and also professionally wrapped so that you don't spill the contents or have oil leaking all over which is one of my pet peeves! The seasoning of the meat is also on point. The onions are cooked lightly to the point that it's still pleasantly crispy and mildly sweet. The fries in the sandwich give the shawarma the authentic taste you'd expect from an Arabic shawarma. This is one of Chicago's greatest gems! read more

This place is definitely not what it used to be since the new management. This will for sure be my last time at Taza. I went in today to grab a quick bite to eat while running some errands on Devon. I usually either get the zaatar pie or the zaatar/cheese pie. I went for zaatar today and let me tell you... it was terrible. My stomach still hurts and I ate over 3 hours ago. Not to mention the place was FILTHY. I've never seen it so dirty before and I was just shocked. I went to the washroom and there was pee on the seat and nothing was stocked and it was just downright disgusting. The way they make their food cooked FRESH (TAZA means fresh in Arabic) and they roll the dough as you order and place it in the wooden oven that gives it the aroma smell making you crave it even moooooooooore. The bakery isn't huge, it's more for order to go kind of place but there are enough tables to sit and indulge in the food right where the good smell is at. This is a far place from where I live, it usually takes me 45 minutes to get there, but once I heard how good it is, I made a trip and it was worth every min in that car. Definitely one of the best places in Chicago to try out authentic Arabian pastries. I love the fact they prepare everything in the open kitchen and you can see how clean everything is and also smell the delicious smell. You can go there for a lovely brunch (Arabian pastries are known to be more of a breakfast). But you can definitely consider it lunch or even dinner-if you like. This place is the closest I have gotten to taste authentic Arabian pastries (manaqeesh and mo'ajanaat) here in the US. Taza means fresh in Arabic, and that's exactly what they're going for. The breads are made fresh in house and they're always coming out of the oven. If you like fresh baked bread, the breads are worth the trek up to devon alone. The zataar bread is my personal favorite. The dough is rolled out by hand, topped with a mixture of herbs, sesame seeds, and sumac, and thrown in the oven before your eyes. Minutes later, it comes out of the oven piping hot and ready for devouring. Also the beef shawarma is the best I've had in Chicago. They make it in house and the spice profile is interesting without being distracting. There are always lots of charred bits, and they stuff it into their delicious samoun bread. It's a great spot and they have parking too. so I am rolling down Devon and I see a Shawarma sign that says "Shawarma $4.99" I am like no way that's a steal and a deal so a couple days later I swing in to check it the place out and get a couple of Chicken Shawarma's for our dinner I can't remember what kind of bread he said it was that he rolled it in, but it was not pitta and that was a nice change it was like Naan but not so chewy a bit softer the Chicken was nice and tender and juicy, the seasoning was just right and the sauce was not so over powering that it took over the sammich, only better Shawarma sammich I have had to date was in Detroit still looking for a place that does Lamb Shawarma, but if you want Chicken this is the place to go they also sell the bread they wrapped it in looked like 3-4 pieces for $2 they would be great for pizza or making cheesy bread I think try this place out it is worth the trip just wish it was open later at night read more

The falafel and hummus are just awful, so weird having bad falafel and hummus in Chicago when there are so many good options around. Having said that, this place is meant to be more for the pizzas, the zatar and cheese pizzas are awesome.
