I waited till today to write this review so that I could collect my thoughts.
First off: 3 stars represents an average. The venue itself--sound, visuals, cleanliness, temperature regulation (not too hot)--deserves an enthusiastic 5 stars. I've never been in a stadium or venue of this size so nice. I prefer it to MSG.
The problem: JACKBOOTED thuggish employees. This place makes TSA on a bad day look like a puppy and kitten cafe with mushy sweet employees that hug you and serve lattes and macarons.
I have never, in a life of theater and concerts, ever encountered such rude, humorless, self-important, obnoxious employees. And it's not even about gender. The chicks are as bad as the dudes.
It turns out that the issues I encountered might have been avoided by 1) taking an earlier train and 2) reading the fine print.
Amtrak was Amtrak and we had no time to dump our bags at the hotel before Comics Come Home, for which we came up from NYC. NO electronic devices are allowed--from iPad to Kindle to vapes.
A security guy said to drop our stuff at a bar called Harp and give them 5 or 10 bucks to watch out stuff. Huh? Just leave my Macbook Pro in some random bar in a foreign city. (And yes, Boston is more foreign than some foreign cities, to a New Yorker.)
So I went up to a reasonable-looking security person who didn't look angry at the world and asked, "If you had something you gave a s*** about, would you leave it at Harp or Tavern [the other suggestion]?"
Smug young man responded: "I'd leave it at home."
Oh thanks, that's really helpful, jerk***; I so appreciate this insightful reply after I explained we were on a train five hours to get to this venue/show.
As I made my way to Tavern or Harp, I found the sweetest lady ever, who worked for the security company. I asked her if she trusted those bars with important belongings and she said absolutely not. She offered to take my bag and I went back to go through security.
That's when they said the vape wasn't allowed. Would it really have been too much to include that in the spiel re prohibited items? You can take a vape into Yankee Stadium, though you're not allowed to use it. I've never had a vape nearly confiscated. You can take them on airplanes, FTLOG.
Absolute insanity.
So do yourself a favor: leave anything that requires a charger at home. If you're traveling for a game or a show, get to your hotel or friend's house early so you don't have to go through the nightmare I did.
Of course then I forgot the vape was in my friend's duffel and my phone was by that time dead. I traipsed back to security before getting lost in an Uber (because apparently Boston's reception is roughly that of the Rainforest---or Litchfield County, to be less hyperbolic, where kids of friends didn't want to attend boarding school due to cell phone dead zone).
Really sweet young drunk kids called me an Uber when I couldn't get a cab. Boston cabs are a nightmare. Sweet girl, 25, said she hadn't taken one since with her parents "in third grade." Alas, the charming drunk polyglot (he spoke four languages fluently and hates New York but said I was nice) heard Charles Street, not Charles River St. My Uber driver's app wasn't working. We couldn't even pull up a map on his Droid. We finally went into a condo complex and an ANGEL looked up my hotel and tried to help him get his phone /app in working order. Driver was sweet but slightly off (and it wasn't a language barrier).
2.5 HOURS after the concert wrapped up, I stumbled into the hotel. 1:35 AM. By the time I charged phone at the luxury condos, I learned that the vape was in my friend's duffel. I was so flustered that when I returned to the security vehicle to offload the vape, I just tossed it in her bag, rather than my own.
The only nice employees in the entire building work at the bar. Good guys all. The beer is *outrageously* priced. Go with hard liquor. Generous pour of Bulleit (they have rye and bourbon both) for 12.50. read more
