I'm writing this review on behalf of my wife who visited Tea Modern Chinese to celebrate Mother's Day. Parking can be hard to come by due to its location in the Orange Circle. It's great they let you sample all the teas in the front before selecting one. The decor is super cute and the setting is well-lit. The service by Vayda was amazing. The food was tasty and she loved the Asian flair to the tea sandwiches and pastries. Her only criticism was that the mimosa flight was a bit pricey ($80) for one bottle and three juices, but it was the perfect amount for the three of them. Vayda was very sweet and attentive, and she checked up on them at just the right times - not too often and not too little. To start, it was a very inviting setting here. Quick and attentive service. The initial sampling of their tea options before seating is a nice touch. Makes it less daunting when choosing a whole kettle of a tea. We went with the Afternoon Tea offering, a $45 "prix fixe" menu selection, which includes a kettle of a tea of your choice, and a preselected assortment of small bites, with both a few savory and a few sweet options. All very fresh quality ingredients here. Flavors on everything are milder in their respective profile, nothing too intensely sweet or salty. Which is nice and keeps the assortment from being at all overwhelming. For the sake of keeping this mostly brief I'll go over favorites and add a couple honorable mentions. After sampling a handful of their teas, I surprisingly went with their Passionfruit Jasmine tea, nice and tropical. I say surprisingly because my norm is a good chai, to which is my honorable mention in this case. The Masala Chai was of a very mild spice level, making for an easy drink that didn't require any additional sugar or milk. For the savory food options, the Curry Chicken Basket was easily the favorite, very tasty and the crunchy waffle basket holding it together completes it with a perfect balance of textures. If I had to choose a second favorite, it'd have to be the Roasted Veggie Wonton, good filling and very crunchy outer wrap. As for the sweets, the favorite was the Black Sesame Hazelnut Choux. Perfect balance of pastry and sweet cream topping. But to be fair, all of the sweets were very enjoyable, this one stood out just slightly above the rest. I recommend parking at the parking structure a couple blocks away as The Orange Circle on the weekends is a bit of a headache to navigate. TEA has something I wish more places would do which is actually let you sample the teas before you order one! The foods were unique and delicious. Cindy, our server, was attentive and friendly, and helped make sure one of our party with a nut allergy was safe while eating. I'm so disappointed to be writing this. My sister and I took our mom on Mother's Day this year and LOVED it- I was so excited to find a new afternoon tea place and with an Asian flair but most of all with amazing service! Our waitress back then was the sweetest and most attentive I'd ever had (see my husband Alan's review as he wrote it on my behalf). My sister and I came again about a month ago and found the name had changed to Star Leaf so we weren't sure if ownership or management changed but the waitress wasn't there anymore and service wasn't quite the same but it was still an overall lovely experience. And by service I mean things like welcoming us to our table, asking us if we had done the tea experience before, inviting us to sample the teas out front, etc, coming by to ask if we'd selected our tea or if we wanted any other drinks (hello mimosa!). I bring all this up because I was so excited to treat a good friend and brought her today and we received none of that. We were seated at a small table in the front about 3 inches away from the next table (I was told the booths were all reserved, fine), and then I led my friend to sample the teas out front because I knew the process. Then we sat for probably 20 min with no one coming by except our waitress with the tea sandwich tray and as soon as she set it down she turned to leave so I said "I would like to order mimosas" she looked confused and said ok she would be right back. Then I said "can we also give you our tea selection ?" Again she looked confused and said she would be right back. Finally she came back and said the guava mimosa I wanted was out but there is only mango, I said fine. Then again I asked if we could give out tea orders, and she said yes so we gave them. But for my friend's first tea experience this is not what I wanted!!!!! The tea should come at the same time or first or at least ask us what tea we want? Were you just going to leave the tea sandwiches and never come back? Or where is the obligatory "have you dined with us before?" Or is it a new silent treatment where all we are left to do is just to read the menu on the table and identify the sandwiches ourselves. Maybe that is the new process but honestly without that over the top experience it was just so disappointing. That really was half of it. I wanted to introduce my friend here in hopes that she would he wowed and would want to bring all of her friends and family someday too. I can't say that was the feeling we left with. The tea sandwiches of course were tasty. But I am disappointed. Moreover, why is the tea coming from tea bags and not the loose leaf that is displayed out front? The thing is, if the service was like this the first time on Mother's Day and I still came back, I would know what to expect. But to have the service decline every time now after 3 times, come on. Tried this restaurant for the first time last night. We were pleasantly surprised! The food came out fast and fresh. Service was attentive and friendly. The vibe is modern and makes a great date night spot. We tried the scallion pancake, steak on crack (upgraded), fried fish, and long bean. My friends and I had the tea service here this past weekend and it was absolutely wonderful! Huge shoutout to our wonderful server, Julianna! Not only was she our server but she also was our hype woman and creative director! The experience and food were great! My favorite items were the egg sandos and the scones with the clotted cream. I chose the jade tea and it paired so well with the food! The restaurant itself is very aesthetically pleasing with lots of areas for cute photos. TERRIBLE. JUST TERRIBLE! Item 1 - Ordered the BBQ spare ribs based on the servers recommendation. Had to send it back as it was disgusting! Inedible pieces of meat if you can even call it that. I came here for afternoon tea with my friend, so I didn't get a chance to actually try the dinner options. We scheduled our tea time later in the afternoon, nearing the end of the session, so there were only 3 other groups. We had trouble flagging servers down at times because it seemed like they were busy getting ready for dinner time, but they were friendly. The interior was nicely decorated and the overall aesthetic of the place screamed 'fancy tea time with an Asian flair', so I'll give them props for that! The only issue with the place is that there was only one restroom and it was being cleaned, so I had to suffer after guzzling down a bunch of tea. Food/Tea breakdown: - Passionfruit Jasmine (8/10): passionfruit flavor wasn't strong, but tea went well with sugar and cream - Orchid oolong tea (10/10): floral and fresh, good by itself - Brown sugar scone (3/10): immensely dry, not flavorful. Sugar just flaked off. Decent with butter, but you gotta ask for a LOT of butter to compensate for that dryness. - Black sesame hazelnut choux (4/10): pretty strong sesame flavor. Not a fan of chocolate myself so this was eh. Pastry was airy though. - Yuzu meringue tart (4/10): I was really looking forward to this one because I'm a big fan of tart flavors and lemon!! We've been itching to try this place, located on Glassell, near the Filling Station. The food is really good, not mass produced and left to sit in a warmer. Everything is made fresh to order. There were 3 of us so we decided to mix it up a bit and order more sides vs a 3rd entree. We started with the crispy shrimp egg rolls. They were perfectly fried, not greasy and filled with shrimp. These were a hit! Then we had the waiter bring us the Duck Fried Rice, Orange Chicken, Walnut Shrimp, and Ting Ling Long beans, all while enjoying a nice bottle of 2022 Pinot / Calling. I LOVE the green beans, they were so light and tasty, the best I've had. The Duck fried rice was surprisingly good as well. the Orange Chicken was not overly sweet- which I prefer and the Walnut Shrimp wasn't my favorite but the others loved it. I love tea services and when I saw that this was a Chinese fusion tea set, I had to come try it to see what it was all about. Beware of parking because it took me quite a while to find a spot in this area. I'm glad that they didn't cancel on me because I was late. I made a reservation for two for the $45 afternoon tea set. It was reasonably priced but it does already include a 18% gratuity fee. The decor inside is very cute and the service is friendly and efficient. They give you one tea pot person and you get to choose the flavors you want whether it's black, oolong, green tea, or caffeine-free based. We chose the earl grey crème and the passion fruit hibiscus tea. We were kind of hoping for loose leaf tea but got tea bags instead. The teas were still very aromatic and refills were allowed. When we got our trays, they explained each small bite with savory items on top and sweets on the bottom. Out of all the savory bites, the curry chicken basket tasted the best. It was unique and flavorful for one little bite because it looks like guacamole in a waffle cone but obviously tasted different than what your eyes see. The quiche dumpling was a little disappointing though because it didn't come with any sauces and was practically all egg inside. I'd also prefer it with a meat filling mixed in. The egg salad sandwich was pretty dry and thin and the cucumber sandwich was refreshing for my palate. From the sweets standpoint, the raspberry lychee mousse was the best tasting albeit really sweet. The matcha vanilla panna cotta was second best as it was really light tasting and smooth. The scone was average tasting and the most filling. The black sesame choux is also light and creamy. The yuzu meringue tart was very strong and sour but I'm sure if you have an acquired taste for yuzu then you might like it. Overall they delivered in variety but some were a hit or miss for me. I would've liked to see a little bit more of Chinese flavors getting incorporated in the savory bites in the future. I wouldn't mind coming back again if they add different sets later on. read more

Steak good, came out a bit under cooked but left on the sizzling griddle to cook to your liking, steak sauce is like a Laos/thai spicy sauce, yummy sauce. String beans are not as garlicky as I like it and it has the numbing pepper but pretty good too. I was very excited to try this restaurant. Quick glance on yelp, good ratings and excited to try their tea service with an Asian twist. The whole experience fell completely short and here is why: We came for their Sunday tea service. It's $45 per person, we were a party of 3. Hostess was very nice. Server greeted us and brought out the teas. Then she brought out the small tower of savory and sweet bites. She never brought any jam or spread. The table next to us had it. I asked if we were able to get more of certain items; she made a stank face and said she'd ask the chef. Gotcha. She came back later and I asked if possible, can we get 2 more pieces of the sandwiches and a small curry chicken savory bite. She came back with it and said it'd be $5. Okay, whatever! And then that was the last time we saw her until we requested the check. Nothing was clear off the table. It was literally drop and go service. Got the check, can't find the server so my guest heads up to the host stand to pay. This is the part where I'm most irritated about: For the 2 small sandos and curry chicken bite thing, we were charged not $5 but $5 each for a total of $15. We don't mind paying for it but please be very clear about it. And they added 18 percent automatic service charge for a party of 3, totally fine if they want to do that but at least provide some sort of decent service. Service was just so spotty. It was just not great. At the very least, provide a 18 percent service if you're going to add it automatically. So for the three of us, we ended up spending $190 for tea and small bites. And the most embarrassing part, the server asked us to leave her a good yelp review. Overall: basic teas, great tasting savory and sweet bites, bad service and a bit on the price gouging side. Some of the cucumbers were very salty? The scone was one of the worst I've tried. Many of the sweets are incredibly sweet, which is interesting since many Asian sweets are usually light on sweetness. I enjoy sweet things, so that didn't bother me, but irregardless, I didn't enjoy most of the sweet treats (or most of the food in general). Tea: they ran out of Earl Grey on my visit unfortunately. The other teas we ordered are quite good though! They didn't offer any sugar or milk/cream. Service: Never really came to check on us. No refills on tea. Fantastic, my new favorite Chinese food in OC. We got the long beans, beef fried rice and sweet and sour snapper. Food was all delicious and very flavorful, I'm tempted to reorder the same stuff but I also want to try their other options. So we planned to have leftovers... but our plates were clean by the end of the meal. It was SO good. We tried the jumbo shrimp, steak, orange chicken and veggie eggrolls. Everything was so perfectly seasoned and cooked. We're still talking about how perfectly tender the chicken and steak were! The servers were so attentive and helpful and constantly refilling our water and even my tea cup! It really adds to the dining experience. We'll definitely be back to try the rest of the menu soon. read more

We already can't wait to come back! Today was our first visit, so we were really grateful to get a seat. Everything is made to count for reservations, so they do not accept walk ins. You must have a reservation so make sure you have one, luckily they could spare a few plates and our party of 2 was graciously accepted in. You get a preset menu, it was 45.00 per person. Each person gets one item of all the selections for the day as well as one tea of choice per person. Everything was so delicate, detailed and delicious!!!! My absolute favorite of today was the raspberry lychee mousse! The combination of crunch and cream with a fruit in the center was outstanding! Everything was delicious though, this is a wonderful spot. Parking is hard to come by so get there early to find a spot, and it cost us 8.00 to park for 2 hours. The vibe is quiet and calm, definitely not a spot for rowdy parties. Hope this helps anyone deciding to go or not. We were fans! Absolutely will be back, (with reservations lol) read more

I was more than impressed with dinner here. My husband and I came for a date night and they did not disappoint. They recently opened so they don't have an offical sign up it's in the cute little downtown area of orange. It was nice they have an open kitchen and we were able to watch them making the food. The servers were nice, helpful and attentive. We were enjoying them making the food and didn't even realize the time, but they gave us a free appetizers as they said that they were sorry for the delay of our food, which we didn't even notice. The appetizers was amazing the chicken egg rolls were so flavorful and did not even need the sauce given with it. All the food was good. My only suggestion would be please give nicer quality chop sticks. I was so excited for the good food but having the wooden sticks it's so disappointing. Bring out those nice bamboo ones to accompany that great food. Will definitely be back, great food and looking forward to see how this place grows read more

What an interesting and fun experience. Cheaper than the tea house but a similar vibe with an Asian twist. Love: That you can try all the teas before making a choice. The cucumber sandwich and mushroom dumpling were both amazing. The sesame and hazelnut dessert was the best thing they had hands down. Hojicha bar looked good but is an acquired flavor for sure. Overall had a great experience. read more
