    Catfish breakfast

After having gone to Frank's on the other side of town the previous week, I decided to stop in at Telwink, another classic diner on a Tuesday afternoon. Telwink is a lot larger with plenty of parking, but its menu is similar in its breadth and prices. You get a lot of food for what you pay for. I ordered the catfish breakfast which featured 3 thin strips of catfish, coated in corn meal rather than flour. I liked this iteration more than Frank's, mainly because the corn meal retained less oil. Otherwise, the rest of the breakfast taste the same. The grits were underseasoned, but there were plenty of hot sauce options along with salt and pepper to dress them. My waitress told me that biscuits usually sell out by noon so I had toast instead.

Arrived at 11:00 am to meet my friends who recommended this restaurant. Being first and greeted by Ms. Lora who very politely brought menu I indicated my friend and daughter & granddaughter would be arriving shortly she assured me she would return. The atmosphere was very festive lots of laughter and conversation happened. I ordered huevos ranchos, beans, scattered hash browns, bacon, grilled muffin, & bite size of my friend's pancake. Oh dear a breakfast I will not forget truly a family restaurant. Note happy employees & great food, give a try! Sincerely Mary Landa

I haven't been here in YEARS. Finally decided to go back. And it just didn't hit like it used to. I had the famous chicken fried chicken because that has always been my favorite. Mmm. Something changed. The cook? The seasonings? The coating on the chicken was also not the same. It was also super crunchy that it would fall apart but at the same times some pieces was raw. Like you could see how some of that breading did not get cooked well. It had no flavor whatsoever. The gravy which I was hoping would save the day also was bland. No flavor at all. Which is very surprising. They need to put them spices back in!! Also the grits was a let down. Overall this experience was not great. Don't think I would be coming back here. (The chicken portion was pretty big but what's the point on that if it has no flavor ?)

If you're a Houstonian and don't know about Telwink Grill, I don't know what to tell you. It's only one of the oldest restaurants in the city and has been here since the 1940's. I grew up in the Southeast part of Houston so I guess that helps. The area isn't what it is used to be, but don't let that keep you from coming in and experiencing what I think is a true diner. The parking lot adds to the charm. The layout may change on every visit because there's no real lines. Once that first person parks, people just start making up spots. Potholes are definitely present so drive carefully. Walking in, it almost feels like you are transported back in time. It has that old school diner feel, with nothing new or modern about it. They have a large dining room, but also have counter seating as well. Another thing you will notice is the seasoned staff. There's a couple of youngsters thrown in, but mostly it's the older generation that I'm sure has been there for awhile. They have great customer service and do it with a smile. Not often you get called darling and sweetie. Miriam was my last server and I swear, every time I took a few sips of my coffee, she was happily refilling it. Telwink is open from 6am-3pm so you have a breakfast and lunch menu. That being said, there's quite a few options. They have three pages of food consisting of all the breakfast items you would expect as well as burgers, sandwiches, salads, plate lunches, sides, and desserts. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day so I went that route. Everything looked good as it left the kitchen but the omelets were really calling out to me. I usually go with a meaty omelet but Miriam talked me into the Polish omelet which had polish sausage and you can add veggies to it. I got it with the works and it came with a side of toast and hash browns. This thing was massive and very filling. They didn't skimp on the toppings either. It was very good. The hash browns were cooked just the way I like them, but needed to be doctored up with a little seasoning and sauces. My breakfast date got chicken fried chicken and it too was a large portion. Luckily she got the gravy on the side because she took quite a bit home and this kept it from being soggy later. We also shared a waffle which was delicious. Overall, all my visits here have always been great. Some may say it's in a sketch part of town, or it's just old and outdated, but to me, that just adds to the charm. The steady crowds on any day of the week shows why it's been around forever and probably will outlast most places in the future. I'll be back!

Okay, I took the women of my church to Telwink for a fellowship breakfast. We were a group of 16, and the servers were very accommodating in seating us and taking care of us. We had a big variety of breakfast items including biscuits, french toast, waffles, etc. checkout my pics. we had a beautiful fellowship and thank Tel-Wink for the great food and service.

Went back to have the Chicken Fried Steak, they no longer pull it from a bag, it's better but not as good as their Chicken Fried Chicken. The coleslaw is on point! The new owners have only made this place better!

I can eat breakfast any time of the day, and Telwink Grill hits that craving just right. I actually found this place by accident, my original breakfast spot was closed, and Telwink just happened to be on the way to my next stop. They've got free parking, but fair warning... it's a little chaotic. Folks just seem to stop wherever and hop out. The whole vibe gives old school truck stop; nothing fancy, no Instagrammable green walls just straight up, seat yourself diner energy. Within minutes of sitting down, you'll have a menu, a glass of water, and food on the way shortly after. You get a lot of food for not a lot of money, which I love. And funny enough, I've never actually paid my own tab here, complete strangers have always insisted on covering it. Of course, I still make sure to tip the waitress well every time. All I ever really want is a hearty breakfast that won't break the bank, and this place delivers. Just know they only serve until 3 PM, and I've only ever had breakfast, so I can't speak on the lunch options. The grits could use more seasoning, but they've got every condiment you could need right on the table. My only gripe? That butter that's not butter situation... pretty sure it's margarine.

Not real sure how I feel about this place. My coworker wanted to go here for lunch and hyped this place up, so my expectations were high. It didn't deliver what I thought it was going to. My first mind told me to order the pancakes, but I changed my mind at the last minute and chose the chicken fried chicken meal. When it came to the table, my coworker said it looked like it was a frozen chicken fried chicken that they just warmed up. I'd hope that wasn't the case, but from the taste of it, I could believe it. The French fries and broccoli were good, but the cornbread was for sure overcooked and quite crunchy. I immediately regretted not just getting the pancakes. I'm not going to count this place out just yet. If we decide to visit in the future, I'll go for the pancakes and see if my opinion of this place changes. As of now, I'll say it's on me because I didn't order the right meal. Until we meet again Telwink Grill!!!

If you want to eat well, come here. All guy cooks here and they are amazing!!! Breakfast is so good, you will want to come everyday! My mom and dad love this place, and me too! The liver and onions are amazing, and the chicken fried steak is unbelievably delicious! Come once and you will come here forever! The servers treat you better than mom herself! Don't believe me? Try it once. Best reason to come to Houston.

Very classic diner that is huge with a huge parking lot. The food is what's to be expected and solid. It has a huge menu with a lot of classic and Tex-Mex breakfast options. There were a lot of nonbreakfast options, but we came for the breakfast. It was packed when we got there but no wait around 9 in the morning, later in the morning there seemed to be a wait. There were quirky signs all around and definitely the diner feel. They were very attentive to refilling our coffee. The prices were good as well for the amounts of food they give. All in all a great diner experience.

    Turkey and Bacon three decker
    April K.

I went in on a Tuesday for lunch. It was fairly busy but I was seated right away and the waitress greeted me shortly after. I ordered the Bacon and Turkey triple decker sandwich with fries. It was good overall, the bacon was crisped perfectly but the turkey was dry. The fries needed quite a bit of salt and pepper to taste. The staff was very friendly over all and it's a good spot to stop if you need a quick lunch time grab.

In the past they would bring out a bread basket, as a free appetizer like how some mexican restaurants bring out chips and salsa, however, they dont seem to do that here anymore. Service at the table was mediocre, our waitress took our drink order and on the way over, the waitress was spilling the drinks over the floor on the way to our table. After our waitress took our order, my gf did not get the mayo on the side as she had asked, and after we received our food, our waitress never came around to check on us, didn't refill our drinks or anything. The place was very loud, louder than visiting waffle house. I was trying to have a conversation with my gf sitting just across the table from one another, and we were having to literally yell at one another just to hear what each other were saying. My gf did state that the sandwich she ordered was a big sandwich, and was more than she could finish. Once we were ready to go, our waitress still hadn't been around to check on us. So I had to flag down someone else, to get us some to go boxes, and our check. Low and behold, when I was ready to checkout, the waitress appears out of nowhere, after all this time, I'm guessing because she thought she was going to get a good tip. I'm sorry, waitstaff only get a great tip from me, once and if they perform a great job duty, and this was not the case in this matter. Maybe, better luck next time, maybe Papas needs to hire better waitstaff worth hiring and keeping.

Service: not great, we had a manager start off as our server but she was awkward in a "not socially aware" way (ex. she kept saying our server had to use the bathroom, even when our server came to the the table and looked so embarrassed; she also told me my non-alcoholic drink order would not taste good without knowing it's what I drink at home), rushed us (every time she said she would give us a moment she'd come RIGHT back to the table within seconds) Our actual server started off rocky as well, perhaps wasn't having a good day and she was visibly annoyed with the manager. She was short and blank with us until she realized we're very nice lol and by the end, her tone and energy had completely shifted for the better. The foreign object: about 2/3 of the way through the meal, I bit into a small piece of blue plastic. Did not know if it was in the fish or the mac and cheese, but I was devastated because I was almost finished eating but couldn't due to paranoia. Our server handled it swiftly and the manager came and let us know it was take off the bill and offered free dessert. Overall, not bad and the food was good enough to where I would go back and give them another try in the future.
